After last year's visit, we were looking forward to another great event, and, it delivered. Around 150 stalls with quality gear at excellent prices. I came away with some great stuff and met up with like minded geeks.
See the end of this video to have a peek at this year's haul!

An interesting video, thanks. I need to go to an event like that as I have a load of stuff that's taking up too much room. However, I'm an ex-pat Brit living in southern France and would have to beg, steal or borrow a van to bring it over there. Of course, I'd make no profit, but I'd rather someone take it for a reasonable sum than dump it. The French don't seem all that interested in that kind of equipment. Cheers!

Glad you enjoyed my video! Yes, there is more interest in retro electronics here in the UK and also in the US for some reason. I also watch a French UA-camr called msylvain59 who does teardowns; he has some quite interesting stuff. It might be better to sell your items as a job lot. You never know, if you do some searching, you might come across someone who would collect your gear while on holiday.

It appears that you were there rather earlier in the day than I was, like another commenting on this video, my presence at the event spurred on by your pair of videos from last year, as I'd not heard of it previously. If you drop by the 'Retro-spective' channel and their 'Later on in the day' video you'll see me (from the back!) plus a comment on what I picked up. The two ladies in the thumbnail for this video were the ones in charge of the stall where I got the ITT Weekend Automatic radio I mention at 'Retro-spective' and it's visible here at the 5:55 point. I was amazed to see in your haul from this year's Retro Tech UK an Ekco portable television set like one we had at our house for a while in childhood and it fascinated me as a seriously vintage item even back then, some half-a-century ago. Sadly, in subsequent decades, it became relegated to the garage at the top of the garden, like an awful lot of stuff did and only re-surfaced, minus its casing, in 2018, when we were clearing up both house and garden at my old place in preparation for a house-move, so it just ended up in the skip. I have a Flickr presence called 'The Curves Man', linked from my UA-cam profile and there is an album there entitled "Found in old garage at 'Frith Knoll', Chevin Road, Belper (Spring/Summer 2018)". Unfortunately, that Ekco set isn't there but there's a whole load of other incredible stuff we turned up, including an advertisement from an 'Exchange & Mart' magazine from 1969 that helped me identify a vintage Taymar Trident 593 camping stove we also turned up in the orchard, which I used for a few days before it was scrapped, a pair of newspapers from 1969 and 1970, both with articles about Czechoslovakia, in the latter case on the subject of the Bratislavská Lýra festival of that year, where Marcela Laiferová - whom I have met after a concert by her in Petržalka, Bratislava - won the Gold Lyre, my blogging about the music from that period and part of the world at 'Girls Of The Golden East' and 'Hotlips On The Horse Tram', plus a feature in my local newspaper on a Czech Glass Fortnight in 1966 in my home city of Derby and, as an aficionado of something like retro electronics, I'm sure you'd love the pile of old 'New Scientist' magazines, my late father being a General Science teacher. That Taymar Trident 593 can be seen in action at my channel, if you're interested in a bit of cooking and coffee percolation with a vintage stove.

Thanks for the comment! It’s cool that my videos got you to go to Retro Tech UK. I’ll take a look at the 'Retro-spective' channel to see your finds. That’s a great story about the Ekco TV-sad it didn’t survive. Your Flickr album sounds interesting, especially the vintage Taymar Trident 593 camping stove. I’ll check it out!

I can assure you that there were quite a few young collectors of all ages at the event. Although collecting vintage radios is usually an older gentleman's sport, I hope there will be even more interest from emerging future custodians of retro electronics.

I am myself a collector from gramophones and phonografs and old radio's from before 1935 buth overher in Netherland the young generation is not interessted and the prices are ridiculous low ! I have a channel on youtube with many thousands of uploads from old records from the period of 1900 till 1960. There's also verry little interest for that ! Excuse me for my poor English ! greetings from Henk !!!!

    • @electronicarchaeology
      @electronicarchaeology Місяць тому

Your English is far better than my Dutch. Yes, I have noticed the prices of some retro gear have dropped quite a lot. Last year, I purchased a Bush DAC90 Bakelite radio in superb condition for only £20. Thirty years ago, it would have been at least £60. I also noticed that some gramophones were very low in price, which surprised me. I am interested in almost everything in the world of retro electronics. The younger generation seems to be more interested in retro computing. The prices of early computers, such as Commodore, are through the roof. People's interests change, and I am sure that interest in very early technology and media will return.

Cheers from the UK to Sri Lanka! Mrs. H and I visited Sri Lanka in 2019; we had an incredible three-week tour. I have several videos on my other channel of our time there. If you are interested in our tour, there's a link in my channel description.

@@electronicarchaeology Yes, i enjoyed watching that glimpse into the Vintage Electronic Fair in Coventry, England! Thanks! Ah, your coverage reached well all the way to Sri Lanka also. I understood that your interests are mainly with vintage radios and TV's and that's okay. I look forward to watch your 2024 Retro Tech UK event video as i already subscribed your channel. I appreciate very much your kind attention towards my humble request. My interests are with audio equipments like tape recorders/ decks, record players/turntables etc. I am very delighted to know that you were here in Sri Lanka with Mrs. H in 2019!! I noted that you had an incredible three week tour here. I am again very happy to hear it and thank you for visiting Sri Lanka!! I like to say that its very good that you visited here at that time, because after the covid19 outbreak Sri Lanka is suffering from a financial crisis due to govt. mismanagement and corruption. But now we are overcoming it slowly and we hope everything will be back to normal in near future. Of course, i am anxious to see those of your videos! I will definitely watch them when i am free and will send you responses soon. Thank you very much for your kind reply!! Greetings & Best Wishes from Sri Lanka!!

I have been to almost every Audiojumble event for at least the last 12 years but never this event. This has convinced me to make the trip this year. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed my video! This was my first visit in thirty years. I used to attend when it was called the National Vintage Communications Fair, back when it first started in 1992. It was refreshing for me to see like-minded people again.

Brilliant! Seeing the Ferrograph reel-to-reel (series 2 Or greater? I can't remember) instantly took me back to being 13 or 14 years old & plugging an extra playback head in for sound-on-sound / echo! My dad used to do swaps with lots of electronic items in the 1970's (he previously had his own tv & radio repair shop at age 20 !). He really got me interested at an early age - including fault-finding & doing the 'convergence' on many valve / transistor tvs (with a mirror placed in front of tv so I could check each r/g/b convergence lines) - I was only 11 or 12 years old at the time! (I read quite a few of those purple-backed Newnes books as well). He also taught me tube reactivation but I was too scared to do this on my own (the smell of ozone just came flooding back to me, writing that!). It was taking the red HT 'suction cup' off the tube's back & putting a screwdriver in to discharge the high voltage, that really scared me! Thanks for this (& part one!). It really brought back some lovely memories now that most of my family have long-since passed away. I wish they made decent (affordable) hifi today - you can't beat the sound of an analog amplifier in my opinion!

Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for sharing your experience. What a trip down memory lane! Your reminiscence of tinkering with the Ferrograph reel-to-reel and learning electronics with your dad is truly heartwarming. It's amazing how those experiences stick with us. Thanks for sharing your story! I agree, earlier audio gear has a special charm. No need to buy new when there's plenty to choose on eBay, and those retro audio shops are definitely worth exploring!

Great pair of videos. Spotted my wife a few times and myself eventually 😅. Bought the wooden radio horn you can just about see under the table at 6:58. I already had a driver unit, so I have done a couple of videos getting it up and running. Thanks 👍 😀

Nice one! Yes, I have seen it. Great to hear you have found some retro goodness. It makes capturing all that video footage worthwhile. I'll subscribe to your channel and check out your videos. Really looking forward to this year's show. My only concern is what I'll end up bringing home. If you see an old bald guy with a GoPro, give me a nod.

amazing how far we have come in computers. from large systems that filled an entire room, to devices that fit in the palm of your hand! server farms not withstanding though. . ..

Yes, it's incredible. Being involved in electronics most of my life, I find it breathtaking - almost like alien technology. Imagine a micro SD card holding hundreds of gigabytes, all on something the size of a fingernail.
