  • Colossus at the National Museum of Computing
Colossus was a set of computers developed by British codebreakers in the years 1943-1945 to help in the cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher. The cipher text was input via paper tape and the 2500 valves of Colossus would find the Lorenz machine chi-wheel settings.
First a peek at the Tunny Gallery, then a walk around Colossus, a rebuild of the world's first electronic computer.
There was one disappointment with the museum. When we tried to enter the PC Gallery it was closed due to a shortage staff, so check before you go.

amazing how far we have come in computers. from large systems
that filled an entire room, to devices that fit in the palm of your hand!
server farms not withstanding though. . ..

Yes, it's incredible. Being involved in electronics most of my life, I find it breathtaking - almost like alien technology. Imagine a micro SD card holding hundreds of gigabytes, all on something the size of a fingernail.

It was awesome seeing colossus, I was a bit disappointed because part of The National Museum of Computing which displays many other early computers was closed.
