Flattening the Oud bowl edges (plus Scraping inside)
Luthiers do this process in lots of different ways.
Lately, I've tried this method. It takes a bit of energy, but it's precise and does not need any special tools.
But as I mentioned in the video, scrape before flattening the Oud bowl on the sandpaper surface.
The bowl dimension:
50 cm long
36 cm width
18 cm depth
3.5 mm ribs thickness
17 ribs
4 cm neck block thickness
1 cm end block thickness
.
The outcome is wonderful to see and touch.
Thanks for watching and supporting me.
Please leave comments and tell me your thoughts about this part of the journey. 🙏❤️

I love this tool. Scrapers do lots of jobs in my workshop: flattening a surface, making shapes on different wooden objects, fining edges, and a lot more. I use a 1mm Carbide steel drill bit with a 4mm body diameter to make good, sharp, and fine hooks on the edge. implanted in a soft metal as a handle. Making an End Block for the Oud

The end block holds the tail part or end tips of the ribs in place. also, it protects the bowl from any accidental drops or pressures at the bottom of the instrument. In floating bridges Ouds, we use this part to place string holes and at the bottom of the instrument. Here I used Spruce wood to make it, some makers use some other softwoods like semi-dens maple or others. Remember that we always...

Hi i love what you do I have question do you put the sealer inside oud Also the same glue Évry where on oud or you put difrent glue thanks brother
Hi, brother 👋 Thanks for your kindness. I don't use any sealer for the inside except those paper strips that covers the rib joints. About the glue: I do use Tidebond glue for the most parts. But I have also used hide glue but for the neck join I don't use it. For neck join I use PVA glues like Tidebond 🙏♥️
Please i need the measurements of these pieces
Hello brother. I hope you have a great time 🙏 I can share the dimensions with. That's fine But if you wanted to have the template that I have designed, I'm going to make it ready for print and CNC with measurements and details included to actually sell it. I've decided to ask 30 US$ for this package. It is all you need to design an oud bowl (plus Neckblock and Tailblock details) I've already share everything you need for your work on my UA-cam channel videos. But this is what I really spent time and energy on designing it with computer. If you're ok with this, I will be happy to send you these files which will be ready in the next week. 🙏❤️

Right now I'm going to prepare all needs of making a bowl, like the ribs template, mould template, neck and tail block also. This files are all printable and able to CNC cut. It's all I already shared on my videos but for those who want it ready to use I wanted to sell this bowl template package for thirty us dollar. Because this part and designing on computer takes lots of time for me and I will be appropriated if someone pay this price and I will send all the details in one single email. Mansour : I swear that "No body ,no any Oud creator can do the same accuracy between two Ouds as twins . Very well done.
That's such a very kind words 🙏 but sometimes building an instrument is like reverse engineering to masters of old time! In order not to reach them just technically! But we need that sound we are looking for! That sound in our common sense, all of us as human. But I love being as precise as I can because I'm getting excited when I dive into details. Matching woods is something that I've seen lots of lovely examples and I just first need to understand the path, find my own way 🙏
@@mansouroud That's what I thought about you Bro. so stunning .
A very valueble playlist!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏❤️
Great video as always. Question: how would it affect the sound if the ribs are not perfectly the same shape so that there are misalignments before scraping, or different thicknesses after scraping? Also, would it affect the sound if during the heating process some parts of the wood is burnt black? Thank you!
You know! What we need is to use as little glue as possible in our joints for long, long-lasting life and sound also (sound is affected, especially when our glue has some kind of elastic characteristic like PVA glues). Burning the wood is not that problematic as long as it does not get fragile. I've seen some traditional makers using a direct flame to bend wood. They burn it, but I don't prefer it personally. Also, burning some parts and leaving other parts normal can make your Oud sound unpredictable, I think.🙏❤️
@@mansouroud About the elastic glue: does this mean that the bowl should be as rigid as possible? In that case, would the thickness of the wood strips affect sound? Regarding the burning, I guess that severe blackening would destroy the wood structures and cause it to loose elasticity, which doesn't matter much for the bowl but matters for the soundboard. Of course in oud making you never heat the soundboard, but for other instruments like Uyghur duttar they often heat mulberry soundboard to cook out the oil and dome it. They take extra care not to blacken it.
@abdumushuk2219 about elasticity of glue, I'm talking about how chrisp it is in comparison to pva family of glues. Also reacting to climate, natural and living character that Hide glue has, makes it a better candidate for a wooden musical instrument. In my opinion. But effects on sound would be that chrisp quality has on making the vibration uniform. It is more close to wood itself. Also glue does not handling pressure, so we need a good matching. Thickness can gives us more reliable joint but makes the instrument heavier but it's the maker choice. I've seen a very lovely vibration in some ouds with thick woods but there is some kind of tuning about harmonizing the thickness all around the soundbox body. I haven't tried it that precisely yet!
@@mansouroud that's interesting... I'd imagine a crisp glue would help vibration because it won't dampen vibrations. This afternoon I just sanded some mahogany pieces to 3.3mm. I plan to use them to make a duttar bowl next month. Good luck to me!
@abdumushuk2219 I wish you best on your way to make another beautiful creation like Duttar. Here in iran we have duttar and I have many friends who make duttars. Lovely ancient instrument. I think normally Oud ribs are thinner than Duttar. I've seen my friends make their duttars with 3.5mm to 4mm or even more. For Oud some luthiers use less than 3mm which I don't prefer. Happy new project 🙏♥️
Great talented Oud maker , You are always doing your job very accurately Dear Mansour.
Thank you so much for your kind words. 🙏❤️
👍👍👍👍👍
🙏❤️
why not use hide glue for the ribs? How many mins do you wait for titebond to dry and ready for another rib?
I've been working with Hide glue on some of my Ouds but right now I don't access a good hide glue. After 20 minutes to half an hour its ready for the next rib.
@ I wish you success 💐 thanks for the answer

hello boss, i got a bit confused with the dimensions. so the max width is 36cm right? what's the max height?
If I remember it correctly, the length of this design is around 52 cm. Now I reduced the bowl length to 50 cm. But keep the width to 36cm. The bowl depth is 18cm. The best strings length is 60 cm on this new plan. So the bridge will be exactly at 10 cm to the bottom of the bowl. 🙏♥️
Amazing work. Please advise for the rib"s dimensions ?
The ribs dimensions vary depending on the size and shape of the oud you are building. The thickness is 3.5 mm in this case. But about the dimensions: for this bowl I want to build that have 17 ribs, 35 cm width, widest part of the ribs will be 33mm and 67cm long. I'm going to share my oud bowl plan soon. There you can have the exact shape and sizes, print or cnc them to work with 🙏♥️

Salam brother, I came across your channel and have been watching your videos. You have truly inspired me. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail is impeccable. Thank you for taking time to make these beautiful videos and sharing with the world. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, expertise and experience with aspiring amateur Oud makers such as myself. I am in the process of making my first Out and currently designing a jig (not a form) allowing me to bend the ribs. This video that you posted is indeed very timely. I have a few questions and I’m hoping you would be kind enough to shed some additional insight on your process. My design for the bending jig is very simple. I’m planning on using a 10 cm diameter aluminum pipe (sealed at one end). Aluminum is not too thick 2 to 4 mm. I plan to mount the pipe on a wood block and secure it with my shop vise. This design is like what is used for guitar rib bending iron that is commercially available. For heat source I was initially planning on using fire in the hole approach through a propane blow torch but moved to planning on using either a halogen or incandescent light bulb with a rheostat in the circuit to control the current / heat. Either halogen or incandescent light bulb use a tungsten filament and can generate high heat on the bulb surface, which then would be radiated to the pipe external surface. The hope is that the pipe surface gets hot enough to allow the ribs to bend. I must make the jig to verify my design and that is the next step. What I’m curious to know is what heat source are you using in your design and what is the surface temperature of the form that you use to bend the ribs (so where the wood meets the form metal top surface). The surface of your form looks like Aluminum, but I cannot be certain. I do understand that required temperature depends on the wood, but do you have any general guidelines for the surface temperature. In my design, a 200-to-500-watt bulb at full load in theory can reach between 120 to 250 degrees Celsius on the bulb’s surface and in that small pipe heat would be radiated. I’m hoping that it would sufficiently bring the surface temperature of the pipe high enough to allow bending. Does the form restrict you so you can only bend one sized rib versus a jig such as I mentioned which would allow one to bend different sized ribs. Any thoughts on pros and cons of either would be highly appreciated. Finally, after you bend the ribs on this form, is that your final step in the bending process or do you have to final adjust the rib dry using heat on a rib profile template before you install on the bowl? I do apologize for the long comment brother with all the questions. I have not found Oud makers that openly share so again I appreciate you for the knowledge you’re sharing. Allah bless you brother and grant you success!
Hello, my dear brother Irfan. Thanks for your kind words, and I'm glad that you liked my videos and found them helpful. I'm into making a full video on how I bend my Oud bowl ribs at the moment, which I think could answer lots of your questions. But for now, I would say that: 1. If you spend on any method, you will be masters at that soon. So it does not really matter, in my opinion. Of course, every method has its own pros and cons. So the hot pipe (which is more common in guitar and violin making) is also very nice. The advantage of this method is that you will be free to form any king of shape on wood. I have tried it first, but its like its not my cup of tea. 2. Yes, this heater that I designed restricts you to bend in a specific kind of shape. but not that much. because there are two steps on bending: the first is heater, and the second is micro adjustments. In the second step (of course in my method), you can change it. Heater just gives you an overall bending to know where the main curve is (main curve: at the bottom of the bowl) 3. The temperature we need is something that does not burn the wood! thats it. As long as you could bend without burning too much, that's fine! Even with some traditional methods, some luthiers work with direct flame and even burn the wood a bit, but personally, I prefer not to burn the wood because wood carbon leads it to be more fragile! 4. The surface material on my heater is galvanized iron, which is just iron that covers with zinc. so it became stainless. with 2 mm thickness. I hope I could cover some of your questions, and I hope you could find some other answers in my next video on the bending process. Respect 🙏❤️
@@mansouroudDear brother Mansour, thank you so much for your response and details you provided. Your explanation is much appreciated and extremely valuable. I look forward to your video and I will await it. InshaAllah. Stay blessed my friend. Connect soon. ❤️🙏
is it normal paper? also masking tape be used?
Yes, it's normal straw paper. Some use different papers that contain a bit of plastic in them. but tape is not good because of its adhesive. We need more strong glue. like wood glue, which is last longer
your videos are so helpful❤❤ i can watch them all day and never get bored😅 btw which type of wood did you used for the neck and end blocks?
I'm very happy that my videos have been interesting to you. This is the Spruce wood I've used for those blocks 🙏❤️

After bracing, I guess the soundboard is flat? I wonder what would doming the soundboard do to the sound.
I didn't clearly understand what you mean about doming the soundboard. Can you explain more please 🙏
@ Sorry lol I mean using properly curved braces to make the soundboard domed instead of flat, as guitar soundboards and back boards are.
@@mansouroud I believe some guitar soundboards are completely flat, and both flat and domed soundboards can produce "good" sounds. But I do believe doming would make differences, whether or not they are desired differences is another question lol
@abdumushuk2219 braces are unbelievable. Every little changes on them have big effects on the sound
@ A related question: why are oud braces all transverse? Is it because the soundboard's width is quite large relative to its length? Are there alternative bracing patterns?
I wonder what's the rationale/consideration behind the thickness distribution of the soundboard? i.e. why thicker towards the tail, and why 1.8, 2, 2, 1.8 ("diagonal") in the middle sections, which is very interesting. Thank you!
This one (instrument) that I was working on was a collaboration with another luthier from Egypt. He was talking about some reasons in order to balance the sound color all over the soundboard. Honestly I didn't like the results but as far as I could understand, in the most string instruments (specially middle eastern), luthiers always play with soundboard thickness. But me also haven't clearly understand the effects yet 🙏 I will share anything I could find
@@mansouroud that's very interesting indeed... I've never imagined asymmetric thickness patterns, but now it seems to make sense, or at least worth experimenting. Thank you!
@abdumushuk2219 we need first to learn document our process.
