This channel is a little bit of everything that occupies my time but mostly it's about my travels to Colorado and the Smoky Mountains. My travels to Colorado often include volunteering with the Colorado Trail Foundation to build and maintain trail, trailer camping, backpacking and fly fishing. The Smokies have become a particular favorite of mine in the Spring to get in some time outdoors hiking, camping and fly fishing. When I'm not traveling I spend time at home doing some flying and running a small sawmill on our place. Also be sure to check out my new channel, Roaming the Rockies that is dedicated to my future adventures in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, with maybe a few side trips along the way.

Celebrating the 4th of July | 2023

After hamburgers on the grill with friends, we headed to the back 40 for a 4th of July fireworks show. The whole event lasted about 45 minutes, with most of that time setting up the different shots. While I lit the fuses, Linda was busy taking the video. Growing up as a kid, all I had around Christmas time was a few cherry bombs, a few Black Cat fire crackers and a few sparklers. In a good year...
Cataloochee Spring 2023

After my Citico stay, I headed to the Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for another week enjoying the North Carolina mountains and streams from the valley's campground. I've always enjoyed visiting the Catalooch and it's continues to be fun to drive the road leading into the valley.
Springtime Along Citico Creek | April 2023

The first stop on my Spring trip to the smokies in 2023 was along Citico Creek in the Cherokee National Forest. Base camp for the week was at the Jake Best Campground. Arriving on a Wednesday with the expectation of getting a choice site (which I did), I also knew that Citico Creek would be closed to trout fishing on Thursdays and Fridays since the Tennessee wildlife folks stock the stream week...

After a few days of fly fishing in the Cataloochee Valley, I drove over to Big Creek via I-40 to explore an area I had only visited briefly in a past trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, GSMNP, for short. The day hike at Big Creek started out clear and chilly but soon turned overcast but fortunately no rain. The hike destination was Midnight Hole and Mouse Creek Falls, about two mil...
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park | Alabama

On a recent Spring morning I did about a 4 mile loop hike in the historic Horseshoe Bend National Military Park in my home state of Alabama. This military park, operated by the National Park Service, is the site of the last battle of the Creek Wars of 1813-1814. Basically, this was the last stand of the Red Stick Creeks. In preparation for the attack they knew was coming, the Red Sticks constru...

Who's walking who? Haha
That remains an open question 😉. Stay tuned for a few more videos from this trip. Gotta catch up on your outings too.
Nice!
Thanks Double T! Stay tuned for a few longer YT videos in a couple of weeks.
@ I look forward to it! I had my first visit with my orthopedic specialist today about my knee injury. I posted about it on the community section of my channel if interested.
Wow, John! you got some great shots in this.
Thanks Double T! That first volunteer vaca with the CTF in 2006 really spoiled me with all the scenery.
Wow, great work and thank you! Hiking over that bridge I did notice what a nice structure it is. I didn’t know it was built without motorized equipment. What a fine accomplishment!
Thanks for the thanks and checking out the video. It was a lot of fun working on the bridge project with a great group of volunteers and some enthusiastic, motivated US Forest Service people.
Enjoyed watching! It’s been years since I visited the old Hancock townsite. I traveled there in a jeep in the 80’s while exploring to Denver South Park & Pacific grade. Hiking down the old railroad grades was one of my favorite memories on the CT. I’m such a Colorado railroad history geek. lol.
Thanks for checking out a bit of my memories! I've done the Durango-Silverton train trip 2x (2005 & 2016) and really want to do the Antonito-Chama & return ride too. Your exploring this area is way ahead of me, but I've been trying to make up for all my lost time since 1968 when I first saw the Rockies and Durango on a car/pop up camper trailer trip with the family that year. My mom had long lost family in Durango and that made the '68 trip all the more memorable for me at the impressionable age of 15. P.S., a word in memory of the USFS crew fella at about 9:59...the following Fall/Winter after this trip, he lost his life in a backcountry skiing accident, leaving behind a wife and several young children. His passion for the work he did made an impression on me the day I met him. 🙏🙏
Very nice video! Thanks for sharing it. I enjoyed watching. Did you know there are a couple waterfalls above the Donley Cabin? No trail leading right to them, but there is one for part the way.
Thanks for watching and the information. Was not aware of the water falls above the cabin. Had plans to visit that area again in mid-late October but not sure about that now until the CNF puts out more information about the status of North River Road and the campgrounds.
@@DrJohn493 ua-cam.com/video/K-duSspAOHg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Update from my recent trip. The bridge across the North River has been pulled out due to unsafe conditions but the stream can be easily forded on foot.
This was amazing to watch! I sent it to Moose Pop. Thanks John!
Thanks for checking it out and leaving your comment. That project was a lot of fun and I actually did some of the work when I wasn't holding the GoPro😉 The Camp Hale area was actually my northernmost segment of the CT I've done volunteer work on. As your videos get farther south, I'm going to be really interested to see how the trail sections are holding up. I've got a few more vids of my work if you care to check them out too. Thanks again for watching.
@@DrJohn493 Yes. I’ll check out the others.

John was a mentor to so many State Aviation Directors throughout his career and I am grateful for the time, advice and guidance he provides me. While the great state of Alabama paid the bill, he served more than just Alabama aviation interest. We were all better because of John’s contributions and investments in all of us! Blue skies and tailwinds my friend.
Thanks Travis! Looking forward to the chance to catch up soon in your great state of Colorado!
Looks like y’all had a blast, thanks for sharing.
Really enjoying these videos. Very calming and relaxing but also exciting.
Thanks Tim, glad you enjoy the scenery and my strictly amateur videos!

Pretty! I haven't spent much time in Georgia!!
Great time of day!
Pretty!
Peaceful!!
Hi Cooper!!
Beautiful
Absolutely gorgeous
That's gorgeous 😍
So adorable ❤
Well, I really didn't get the best view of him...walking in front of me 😉
Great job Cooper ❤ I hope you have been doing well. I finally turned my comments back on.
Thanks Nicole! Adopted him about 2 months ago and getting him trained up a bit to start hiking, camping and hopefully backpacking with me by the Spring. Always enjoy y'all's adventures!
Do you run across bears?
Thanks for watching and leaving your question. In all the trips I've made to the Smokies and the Cherokee National Forest, I've only seen one bear and he was making it up the side of the mountain fast as he could.
I very much enjoy all of your videos. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for following my video posts and letting me know you like 'em.
Knowing Ken Rowe as one of the true leaders of NASAO and mentor of so many of us "young bucks" during our early days in a state aviation organization, makes me so proud that NASAO recognized Dr. John Eagerton for this highest and most esteemed award!! I have cherished my friendship and fellowship with John both as a fellow NASAO State Director as well as Regional Administrator for FAA's Southern Region. Never once did I reach out or talk to John that he didn't have words of encouragement or a passion for anything aviation. As Vic stated in his speech, I will forever feel that Dr. John Eagerton is the one person I'd always want to be beside me - making anything and everything POSSIBLE!! Best Always to My Dear Friend - Dr. John Eagerton. Dennis
Thanks Dennis for those kind words. I've always appreciated your collegiality, friendship and being one of my mentors when I became a member of NASAO way back in 1994. I'm again humbled by your remarks.
Wow đẹp
Beautiful ❤ that looked like a great fourth of July John
Thanks Nicole, it was a blast (pun intended)! 😎
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Nice celebration John!
Thanks Bryan, I went all out on this one!
Great show, John! Well-captured on the camera. 👍🏼
Thanks Carl, Linda will appreciate the attagirl!
Hard to beat a glass of Maker’s 46 with that scenery! I just added Citico Creek to my places to visit!
Sorry for the late reply. You'll truly enjoy the scenery, solitude and peacefulness.
Отличное путешествие дорогой Джон! Вы показали очень красивые места! Я была рада прогуляться вместе с вами! Классное видео! Желаю вам всего доброго!
Рада, что вам понравились пейзажи
That eas so absolutely beautiful ❤ i love the beautiful water crossings and the views wefe stunning. Miss it already
Spring...or Fall in the Smokies cannot be beat...except maybe Colorado in the Fall. Thanks for watching and commenting. Safe travels!
Really nice video John, one of your best.
Can you fly fish for Trout there...?
Yes, it's a popular trout stream. Be aware though that March through October each year it is closed to fishing on Thursdays and Fridays due to the stocking schedule. And a daily permit is required in addition to the fishing license to fish both Citico Creek and the nearby Tellico River. But both areas have plenty of tribs that can be fished 7 days a week. Thanks for watching.
Looks like you had a great time at Jake Best Campground. If you had continued along #105 for just a little bit more it would have dropped down to the creek. In fact when you walked across the low bridge to the creek #105 is just on the other side. Also you didn't climb up the mountain high enough to find me.
Oh well, gives me a good reason to visit that area again. I was afraid I didn't go far enough upstream on 105. Also met a local after I got back to my vehicle that gave me some good information on the two creeks. Looks like I missed you by about 20 minutes or so. Unsure of the trail you would exit to your vehicle on. Thanks for watching!
Now showing us how you tied that fly would be a worthwhile 20minute video!! Nice job. That should surely catch some fish!!
I may try doing a video one day while sitting at my fly tying bench. As it turns out, I caught a few trout in the Catalooch using that pattern I tied. Thanks for checking it out!
It's a beautiful area. I was pretty bummed to see the sign on campsite 14 across the bridge saying camping prohibited. I believe that is from the trash and destruction. It is a place I have camped twice and really enjoyed it. If you can reduce the level of your music, it will be better background music. Good tunes though. And I used to own a nice Orvis Rod like that.... Maybe I should again...lol
Thanks for checking it out. Talking to a USFS person, they were concerned about e. coli getting into the creek due to all the people that didn't know how to poop in the woods. I saw evidence of that last year. Jake Best worked out really well for me. I'll work on bringing down the music track. Thanks for the heads up. Got that particular Orvis rod for Christmas. Safe travels!
Glad to see you getting to use your drone.
I play with it every now and then when the feds ain't looking 😉😉
Looks like it was a great trip.
It was Frank, can't tell you how much it was another memorable outing to the Smokies. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
Very much enjoy all of your posts. Thank you!
Thanks Steve...appreciate your following along!
Very beautiful nature
Very well done, John. Maybe Ivan’s trail name is ‘Scoots.’ 😊 And good bourbon choice, by the way. Also, you flew that drone like you had pilot experience. 😉 Enjoyed the video very much. Thanks for posting.
Thanks Carl!! I may have to rename Ivan if his new velcro britches don't work...and Scoots would be a good name to use. Can't visit Tennessee without a sip of MM#46k to make the evenings relaxing. I need to work on my drone PIC though.
That creek scenery was great. Were you able to do any fishing?
Thanks Taylor for checking out the video. I got a lot of fly fishing in along Citico Creek in the Cherokee National Forest and the Cataloochee Valley. More videos from the trip to come. Stay tuned!
Nice video, John. Sure is nice to see all of that green in the woods again. Was Ivan with you? Didn’t see him.
Thanks for checking it out Carl. The greenery was lush at the lower elevations but higher up the trees were just starting to bud out. Ivan slept in that morning but he will definitely make a few appearances in upcoming videos from this trip.
Very beautiful forest
I'm glad you enjoyed the scenery and thanks for watching and commenting.
So awesome ❤ I'm glad you enjoyed this as much as we did. It's such a beautiful place. Did you see that mouse Creek falls is when you get up to the hitching post, you can't see it from the trail unless you step behind the hitching post. It comes down the side of the cliff and runs into the main stream.
Hmmm, I looked around some from higher up the trail but did not see that.
@@DrJohn493 It's a little longer than what it says on the sign to get up to it. Pretty tall waterfall.
@@NicoleHikesalotWell, that'll just make me have to go back again and see what I missed the first time. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@DrJohn493 absolutely true. I noticed on the hike down that it took us a little over an hour, so it's got to be closer to three miles up. I think after midnight hole, it was approx. 25 minutes more and it will be when you see the hitching post on the left side, go right behind it and you will see the waterfall. It will be straight across from you at that point tumbling down from the mountain. So beautiful.
@@NicoleHikesalot Won't be hard to retrace my steps and go a bit farther. I'd love to see the contrast in the Fall, even though the water will probably be a bit lower and slower. Good excuse to go back!
Love the hardwood forests! Beautiful day for a hike, thanks!
Thanks for checking the video out!
