Adventure Essentials. Module Vs Book!

- When it comes to running D&D or any TTRPG, there are many ways to boil a frog. The question is, what way works best for you?
In this video I contrast 2 of the options: the Module Vs the Adventure Book.
Some prefer to have detailed lists of every possible scenario while others what a more minimalist design approach. And other yet prefer to do everything form scratch.
Let's look together at two examples of TTRPG Adventure Design.

Thanks for watching everyone!
Love the Pedro the Lion shirt too.
@@BLynnthanks, just saw them live at a local venue!
Glad you're covering this topic, I wish more content creators talked about this. I've run several of the 5e adventure books, and they're so hard to reference at the table it feels like I have to do homework just reading the section I'm gonna run every time and even then they plant something 3 chapters before or after that's relevant for that particular room/place.
Onto running pamphlet adventures pretty exclusively. Lord knows the OSR is chock full of em.
That being said, I just finished a run of Star Wars Edge of the Empire's adventure book Jewel of Yavin, which I thought was a masterclass of adventure book writing. It begins with a description and summary of Cloud City, then goes to a Cloud Car Grand Prix, then goes to an auction / heist for the Jewel of Yavin. Loved the progression and layout of that adventure book, that and the Star Wars Age of Rebellion adventure book With Friends Like These are my favorite adventure books I've ever run.
@@clericcabingames totally agree. Maybe there's someone out there those books are written for whose brain works very different than mine.
That is high praise! I love edge of the empire. I think it is the best use of the Genesys system. I've not run any adventures in it, just played in a starter box game. That's good to know though if I want to pick up an adventure for it.
Great video as usual! It didn’t come off as overly snarky to me, just the right amount 😉 And thanks for getting that jingle stuck in my head again!
Of course you would say that 😉 thanks!!!
@@ElderGoblinGames I do appreciate some snark 😂 no problem!!
Oh man, this is so true! I hate reading straight from the book. I try to use the texts as... very, very loose guidelines lol
insert Capt Jack Sparrow Gif here:
that jingle tho 😬
I have a lot of fun making them!
I absolutly agree. My freinds and I have been playing Mausritter, The Thirty Moons System and a lot of zines recently. I love games that encourage everyone to improvise.
@@collinalix212 I love me some Mausritter (if you can't tell by the mic). I need to make a list of zines that I really like to make a video about. Maybe I'll have to check those out!
@@ElderGoblinGames I am looking forward. I love hearing new perspectives on games (books, movies, etc) I enjoy. I can always use reccomendations for new games to play or just admire for their creativity.

Kelsey is an engineer, so she typically uses words to communicate only what she needs to. (No, not all engineers are this way, but the majority are,.) The individuals at Wizards have many disciplines under their belts & do not have the same practice as most engineers, meaning they will be more descriptive & use many more adjectives. This also, means because the more descriptive person will sometimes realize they have included ideas that may not be intended they will attempt to go back over explain things to avoid the issues they created. Where many engineers will go back & remove data until only the idea they meant to communicate is left. (I am a technician who has worked with many engineers over the last 32 years. Certainly your mileage may vary, but I have seen this a lot in my years.)
That totally makes sense. That must be what my mind doesn't click with their style of communicating info
@@ElderGoblinGames many times I will rewrite class features or spells to my character sheet I simplify it down to the information I need, removing the assumptions I make automatically from the text & typically these written forms are less than half the size of the original text. Sometimes a whole paragraph is replaced by a single sentence.
This is the way. Probably the same reason I like rules lite games so much. It's the default for many of them.
Good writers do that. They pair down irrelevant detail until something is clear and yet pleasant to read.
The Whose Line Is It Anyway? Homage is well-done.
Haha, thanks! According to my demographic, there's probably not too many people who get that little nod.
„The 2024 DMG is so long and thick and meaty…“ 🤦♂️
🤣🍖
When I saw saylor I knew exactly whete it was heading. I think saylor is a legendary tier module.
Saylor?
Goblin Gang assemble!!!
the horn of helm hammerhand will sound once more form the deep!
*huff huff huff... I'm there, I'm not late

HAIL BROTHER!
Hail house Morrow, may the hair on your toes never fall out!
I run OSE and Shadowdark and I use the old TSR modules
Nice. Both are on my shelf and I definitely want to run some old school adventures with OSE one day. Any recommendations?
@@ElderGoblinGames I started with Keep on the Borderlands and that's my groups home base, I've run them through Ghost Tower of Inverness and The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh. They are currently in The Lost City
OnePageDungeons are peak adventure design
💯 agreed!

Thank you for your work.
Great video.🙂👍
I now play mainly solo.
I need a light module to let my imagination run wild.
I need a Big Book with Lore.
I need a Big Bestiary full of beasts and other abominations.
And I need Random Tables, lots of random tables.
And a Halfling because I'm playing a lot of DCC , CUaBM at the moment. 🤓🦾
Or a Plantients on MCC. 🤓🌾🤖
That sounds fun. Other than my quick foray into Dragonbane I've not touched much solo gaming. Do you have a default system you use for solo?
Also, if you haven't checked out Knave 2, it has some excellent d100 tables and I highly recommend it!
@@ElderGoblinGames
Please excuse my English, it is not my native language.
I use Mythic 2ed for The Oracle in Campaign.
And the DCC Solo is good and gives interesting advice on the adventure modules of DCC RPG, especially on the management of pre-Save before each piece in a hostile environment (int Check, sav ref, sav fort, sav will) before entering each room.
In loot and encounter tables, in Fantasy it's easy to find. (DCC RPG, Old-School Essentials, Dungeon Design OLDSKULL, etc....)
For the post apocalyptic, I use game help made by Gamma World players, and CUaBM helps me a lot in this area of random tables.
To generate Dungeon, I use Dungeon Design OLDSKULL and especially the fourth opus.
And yes Knave 2e interests me a lot, and I feel like I'm going to fall for it soon. 🤓👍
