Steal These Rules From Mausritter!!!

- In this series I talk about indie TTRPG's and rules you might borrow, dare I say steal from them? [and also secretly try to get you to just buy and play that game instead]
In this one, I discuss the Mausritter! Sword And Whiskers Role-Playing!
(there might even be a jingle at the end)
Check out my other videos for more universal and indie / folk TTRPG goodness and tips.
Thanks for watching.

I agree--so many good ideas in this game, you might as well just play the whole game.
I did steal the death roll: hit 0 hp, take damage to con, and make a con roll. I put this in Shadowdark, but instead of the roll under mechanic, I did a DC12 CON check. This really helped in a first level dungeon crawl for players used to 5e. It was a very good decision, because otherwise their characters would have sat out most of the first combat. Plus, it gives a characters a "i'm just barely holding on" roll that feels very dramatic.
Nice, that's a great way to do it!
Mausritter has SUCH a good faction system and it's really influenced how i run things in my sandboxes
🐀💚
Great Mausritter song at the end! Thanks. 😀
Thanks! I had a blast making it.
I really like Mausritter but it's such a different game from other fantasy RPGs there's not much you can adapt from it. I think what I would take is the "Indiana Jones" adventure design: de-emphasizing combat and emphasizing exploring new locations, avoiding traps, solving puzzles, quirky social encounters and hexmap travel.
Those are excellent takeaways.
Other games in this rules family: Into the Odd, Electric Bastionland, Mythic Bastionland, Lilliputian, Eco Mofos, and one of my favorites Cairn. Really great games worth looking into if you like Mausritter!
I love Cairn! Just finally got my hands on a copy of into the odd, and I believe my mom kick-started Mythic Bastionland on my behalf. All great games!
I prefer side based initiative; it allows player to plan. and schem and support one another. I sometimes have folks reroll if something momentous happens or the dynamics of the combat shift.
I need to try slot based stuff where the slots get damaged and players lose abilities. I kinda recoil from it as it seems so “unrealistic “ . So are HP, but there you are. I like sots and ideas to simplify encumbrance, but to keep it part of the game.
I really want to implement the “recovery stat damage when you rest at full HP.” Perfect for 5 Torches Deep.
There are still things to rip off! Good advice.
Just now discovering your channel, and it's awesome. Thank you for all the work you put into it! New sub here!
Thanks and welcome
Mausritter looks so cute and fun!! And wow, you really stepped up the game with that jingle 😳😂👏
Thanks!! Maybe Juno will play it one day 😄
Awesome!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
And I think that I see Mexican Gothic on your self...an awesome and fun read. I think I would enjoy watching a vid should want to talk about some of your favorite and inspiring books.
That's actually my wife's book, but I've heard good things lol. My section of the self is much smaller and just out of frame. Mostly fantasy.
Also, if you want to check out my wife's channel @librariesandlattes she talks all about books and you'll recognize a familiar bookshelf 😆
Take how Mausritter does spells and use only martials for players
So much about this reminds me of Knave. I need to pick up that box set!
Absolutely! I think in the acknowledgments they even mentioned into the odd and knave!
@@ElderGoblinGames yah, there’s some shared DNA. I really need to pick this up.
We are quickly approaching a point, where I will obstinately start demanding a songs supercut video, preferably with multiple stanzas of each song.
As much fun as that would be, I would need a recording studio at that point haha. I barely got through this jingle with my upstairs neighbor banging on the floor...
@@ElderGoblinGames As long as it's in rythm, I don't see the problem.
Mausritter is such a cute game, I hope I can get it to the table one day
I hope I can get the box set one day too
Do it! It's a great one to have.
@@ElderGoblinGames will do but already have a lot xD
@@juauke tell me about it... more games than I'll probably ever get to run.. but that won't stop me from trying!
very cool game. our game has some similar game rules. Our [PC] initiative system is relatively easy, 1D6 = 1-3 = attack, 4-6= defend. weeeeee
This game looks amazing!
Well, you started with my first thought - just play Mausritter! Get over the mouse thing and play Mausritter!
It's awesome...really.
Don't be a mouse hater, embrace the rodent role and enjoy the game system. Boom, there, we are having fun before we know it and imagining that our cat is eyeing us in a new way.
Cheers!
If you watch the video to the end you'll hear the mouse jingle I wrote lol. Definitely a fan.
I need to get a copy of Mice and Mystics to play Mausritter with
What's that?!?
GURPS initiative is easy, everyone has a flat speed score, you go in that order highest to lowest, DX breaks ties once you know everyone's speed all combats are the same order so you can just have it written down permanently
Yeah, I figured there were some systems out there that do that. That's why I tagged on the sentence about set initiatives based on a number. Though I still like rolling dice in the end.
@@ElderGoblinGames Yeah, to each their own, I never liked random turn order myself
I tried to make Armor work as Damage Reduction for 5E trust me, it is not balanceable you are better off picking a system like Mausritter, Basic RPG or GURPS that already does it that way.
Totally. I think I say as much in the video, but this is aimed more at old school style games. I'm not really a 5e player these days, and while I hope people can glean some insights from my videos who do play that game, it's not generally my demographic.
@@ElderGoblinGames Yeah, you did, although I figured a bit of perspective from someone who had this exact idea after reading Mausritter and ad a LOT of frustration for several weeks trying to hack an unhackable thing
No that's a good insight. It's honestly more of a highlight of Mausritter than it is a system that's going to fit a lot of different games.
When you start chopping and hacking on that core of a concept, it's going to have a cascading effect throughout your game. It will probably work in other similar games, but not really complex ones.
@ElderGoblinGames I hope more people learn and experiment with systems more, I think more people would benifet from learning a lot of games and even mix and matching to make their own systems
I find it odd when people only wanna learn one TTRPG, like you don't just play one game, or read one book do you?
