Moviedrome - Dazed and Confused (Mark Cousins)
Genuinely staggering just hiw much worse Cousins is in every way compared to Alex Cox. Cox might be one of the greatest presenters of all time - his 3-4 minute intros were minature works of art. Cousins intros are all grating, whiny and ruin my enjoyment of the film. Literally the oppositie of Cox.
Tx: 20 July 1997.
A Motorhome movie😂
The director would go on to appear in First blood as one of the deputies who antagonises Sylvester Stallone..
I missed the war but I was in the U.S. airborne infantry less than 10 years after it was over and before this excellent film was made. I don't make a habit of watching Vietnam War films but I came across this one in a video rental place (yes, that long ago) and brought it home to watch. In my opinion it's the best VN film I've seen, and that was partly because it was only a handful of no-name actors without any "Hollywood"-style drama and music and the works. Only a small behind-the-lines mission by LRRPs (Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol members), men handpicked for their skill and courage to infiltrate the territory of "Charlie" and look around, and maybe do some damage -- just that, and survive to get back out again. Of course the short-shoestring budget was why this production was made in some scrub forest in Southern California and not across the Pacific Ocean like "Apoocalypse Now" or what have you. However I found it not bothersome. From the opening credits one sees that the writer/director was a paratrooper in the Vietnam War era. He name-checks his old units: the 2d Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, in the States: then obviously after being levied for war service from there, assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion, 503rd P.I.R., in the famed 173rd Airborne Brigade which was a "fire department" force that fought all over South Vietnam at one time or another; then to the Brigade's Jungle School where he learned to be a LRRP, and finally the I Field Force Vietnam, a corps-level (multi-division) command, for training as a forward observer -- i.e., as a soldier whose job was to get close enough to the enemy to plot its location (grid square) on his military map, and then call in an artillery barrage from maybe 10 miles away or more. Exactly as one of the soldiers does in this film -- this was their mission and in dramatic terms the end of the film's "rising action," followed by their desperate attempts to stay ahead of the infuriated enemy in pursuit of them, long enough to reach a rendezvous point with a pickup helicopter and get out of the zone. Perhaps never was there another VN movie that was written with so much insider knowledge and dedication. Personally I could recognize so many jungle type situations that I was trained to handle as a soldier at the beginning of the 1980s, because as the saying goes, armies are always fighting the last war, and virtually every senior NCO and officer from major on up to general in the 82nd Airborne was a Vietnam veteran then, many in the old 173rd "Third Herd" (which had been disbanded after we left Vietnam by 1973) and they taught us what they knew! We were even still wearing the same uniform items, such as the iconic "steel pot" helmets that were then being phased out in favor of the new (and current) design with bulletproof Kevlar material. Same Huey helicopters, the iconic choppers of that war, also phased out long ago. And then....our next big wars were in all in deserts! A case of LO-effing-L. What I liked best was the range of characters. I felt like I KNEW every one of the half-dozen LRRPs, because they were exactly like various men I'd met in my own 82nd Airborne years, I mean, exactly. They weren't a crew of freaks like in Apoc. Now's military or patrol-boat scenes, or hero/villain guys like in Platoon. In any army men of different backgrounds and temperaments, ranging from (in Vietnam) draftees waiting for their day to get back to civilian life, to "lifers" like the black NCO and a white southern man, to ambitious but inexperienced lieutenants, are all thrown together randomly and have to work together on anything up to and including a dangerous mission like the one in this film, despite their contrasting backgrounds and personalities. This film because of its extremely small scale was able to give each character some "time" to be developed, displayed.
👁️👁️ 🐽 👅
I think it's still an intense,disturbing film.
All time classic made even better with Alex's review
I miss moviedrome. I miss the days when the BBC was worth watching
Have it on DVD. First saw it on Moviedrome and still love it.
Tom speaks like he’s about 30 years old, not 18. He sounds like he’s come out of Eton or something. Maybe his wealthy mother sent him there for his education and he became one of the Eton Rifles (public and private schools can produce some delinquents, look at If and Unman, Wittering and Zigo. Even the louts of that era were a bit refined. George Sanders and Beryl Reid appear more infrequently because that’s what the film was about action. But it’s aimed at younger audiences (people under 40).
1:25 It's simple really: Wear a PLO/Hamas keffiyeh scarf and I won't subscribe to your channel ever or care about your movie reviews or watch any future movies you make.
1:25 Alex, why are you wearing an Islamic terrorist keffiyeh scarf that dates all the way back to Yasser Arafat and the PLO terrorist group? Why would anyone associate himself with Hamas or other Palestinian terrorist organizations? Pathetic.
I used to watch Movie Drome religiously back when Alex Cox introduced it. Watched many classic movies for the 1st time . Assault on Precinct 13. Fiend without a face/Night of the Comet/ Wickerman/Dead of Night/The Terminator/ The Serpent and the Rainbow /An American Werewolf in London/A bullet for the general. Far to many to list as a kid. I remember going on a school trip to Flamingo Land and the night before i watched Alliigator & Q The winged Serpent. I also watched it when Mark Cousins took over. but i preferred Alex Cox. Huge fan of his Repo Man. However i have to strongly disagree with him on They Live. That was an awesome movie. and so was the Andromeda strain he's introducing here. Back in the day when this was still on in 93 era i think i was also watching The Little picture show with Mariella Frostrup. Classic T.V. :)
You know you’re normal when you love Kiss Me Deadly and can also have a laugh…💋
Spectacular musical score (disregard the insipid hippie ballad "Riding Free") draws endless inventive textures from a relatively small ensemble When this video gets around to screening the opening sequence, check out the theremin-like timbre from lead guitar, soprano vocal, and flute stacked in unison, or the fat creepy bottom end with bass guitar and bowed upright bass layered together. And did somebody order some wah-wah guitar ...? 😛
George Saunders aka Chadwell the butler killed himself right after the movie wrapped. His suicide note is quite famous.
John Cameron, cool composer at large! His music on the KPM library and for "Half Forgotten Daydreams" alone <3
@@Octavionjarqaviousriddles Ok, I'll bite -- what *did* Mr Saunders say about this musical score in his letter?
Love this film, so many qualities it shares with Schrader`s masterpiece "Mishima A Life In Four Chapters"
George Saunders the actor committed suicide after the film wrapped
Thank you SO MUCH for uploading this! For so many years I thought this was Mark Kermode introducing the movie, but now I watch this I know this was it. THIS was the movie that introduced me to Leon, one of my favourite movies of all time. The movie that inspired me to make movies (I never did but it was a dream I tried). Thank you. This is a piece of history right here.
Same here, this was in 98 & remembered these clips but forgot about Mark Cousins.
Alex Cox is a good host. He directed Repo Man(1984).
Salvador is the best movie of the eighties
Stone cold classic
loved these on a sunday night<, 1st watched Manhunter via Moviedrome :)
Nobody other than Cousins has ever spoken about a film as beautifully or as sensitive as this. Where is Cousins please?
Alex Cox could have been one of Simon Day's inspirations behind his Fast Show actor and film, stage and TV historian Tommy Cockles.
My favourite film ever - Just is
Now it's bring me the Head of Boris Killer Johnson whose nothing but the SCUM of the Earth and a Disgrace to what was once called a Humane Race. :-(
Alex Cox was UA-cam movie critics long before UA-cam ever became an idea in anyone's head. Love his reviews on this one and manhunter.
Moviedrome films were great for a teenager starting their film education and seeing these films for the first time. Loved the Alex Cox intros too.
Great little movie. I don’t agree at all with this d-bag regarding the “look” of the actors. They look plenty stressed to me.
This "d-bag"...fucking hell - look up who Alex is...
I saw this and I've been Bardot fan.
Where did he get the idea this film had a huge budget?? Kurosawa would have had a much bigger one. And filming in Ireland was perfect as the story of Arthur never really strays beyond the shores of ancient Britain. One of my all time favourite films much overdue a 4K restoration.
Loved _Moviedrome_ and Alex Cox. Such a shame the BBC stopped showing these as they were very unique and extremely informative.
Thanks for uploading this, I remember it being advertised with Mark Cousins back in the 90's just before the series started. I thought it was the BBC's slow reaction to the Brit-flick sugar rush we had in the mid-90's, but didn't know at the time that Alex Cox started it in the 80's. Shows like this were so so unbelivably rare for a teenager into films back then. The most we ever had on TV at one point, was Barry Norman, this, and 'Moviewatch' with Johnny Vaughn.
One guy I was in Sixth-form college went on Moviewatch
British motorcycle 🏍/ 🎥 film industry fading away....❤️
Alex is stood outside a Hungarian hairdressers here. Anyone know why/where??
He showed me "Girl on a 🏍 motorcycle." I loved it. ❤️ 😍 Good 👍 eyes 👀.
Much as I respect Alex Cox, I have to disagree with him here - Psychomania is a much better film than Girl on a Motorcycle.
Did I miss something? Was he best friends with Alfredo? I didn't think they even knew each other other than in passing? He was the lover of his girlfriend but apart from that...
No, You didn't miss anything. Apparently Cox didn't rewatch the film before he did this. Lol.
@@KClouisville thought so lol...still, love the charm of those old curated movies on bbc2
To each their own. The iMDb reviews tend to compare this from a surrealist perspective with David Lynch works or Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Personally, such a comparison belittles the surrealist quality of David Lynch and Terry Gilliam. It's an incoherent mess of a film.
Cox’s legendary movie 🎥 Repo Man 🤘💙❤️💙❤️
One of my favourites but can’t find it anywhere 😅
I wont
Alex Cox is upset that Platoon makes the point "If the US had just had better leaders we would have won that war." Well guess what..... if we did have better leaders we WOULD have won that war!
I found this film particularly tedious. I like Godard's early work but by the late 60's he loses me.
Don't worry there are plenty of Hopkins type that exist today. All they need is the right type environment to flourish.
Lawrence Of Arabia, "that long, tedious film". I bet he's changed his view over time.
I mean, isn't Lawrence of Arabia supposed to feel long and tedious? I always thought that was Lean's intent. Lawrence spends most of that movie frustrated with his inability to get things done in the desert, whether it's gaining the loyalty of various tribes or dealing with the British bureaucrats. It's a long and tedious process, init.
Dude in this video came out as a homosexual a few year ago.
What the hell are you on about Alex?
Alex gets it dead right. This is truly a great film!
