Kramer Pacer Classic 2022 Whammy Bar Test
Kramer Whammy Bar Test with 4 month old Slinky’s.
In the video I refer to the metal pieces that hold the string at the bridge as “metal rods”, that is not what they are called. They’re called “saddles” just like on a strat. The only difference is these saddles lock the string in place and don’t allow it to move. The “metal rods” are black screws that fine tune intonation.

A couple things I forgot to mention. 1. The fret ends are not “sharp”. They are slightly rough in places if you go looking for it running your hand purposefully up and down the fret ends. I don’t notice it playing and definitely wouldn’t take it to a luthier to address it. 2. The high e string kept popping out upon first initial tune up out of the box with heavy whammy use and bends. I was terr...

    I can see you enjoy that guitar! I bought one around '87 when I was on leave from the military. At first I hated it. I wouldn't stay in tune, etc. I called it the Mule, because it was so stubborn. It wasn't the guitars fault, it was mine. So after years of learning and researching, and learning how to set intonation etc. I modified it. Locking tuners, replaced string tree-meaning I removed it, put an LSR roller nut, replaced pick ups, had it re-fretted with 6100 frets, then had to modify those! I would try to pull up on the whammy bar, and it would fret out, so I sort of made my own compound radius neck, roughly 12 to 16 at the 12th fret. Love the neck and hate the string pull through the nut. Drives me nuts! So the G string is still always a problem because of the angle that the string goes through the nut. I digress. My guitar sounded exactly like yours before the mods. So thank you for sharing it! I did this little number on my modified one :studio.ua-cam.com/users/video4sTDAWQa7Z4/edit Not the best audio quality or recording..but the same guitar modified. Love the neck on that thing!

      I agree with what you’re saying about the string through the nut. It makes the whammy very unreliable. It’s built like a tank though. I like you’re song. That’s cool you’ve got the ability to play with a drummer like that

    Nice looking guitar man! I love Kramers and Floyds. I have a Baretta Vintage, Jersey Star, NightSwan - yours here sounds great! I am a bit miffed at the rear springs being screwed in 100% - that's not really ideal. As you know, you have to balance the *spring tension* with the *string tension*. Tune the strings alternating: E, e, b, a, d, g ... something like that. It makes the process go much faster - was the new strings stretched properly? If you are a "tweaker", like me, and you have another set of strings, I'd move those springs back to a more normal position - maybe an inch from the body, and then stretch a new set and see if it will be stable with the springs like that. Also, the Fine Tuners ... run one all the way down, another all the way up, and another between those extremes. Then set all of the Fine Tuners to the middle position you found. I'd do all this sometime when you want to set it up again ... I think it sounds great, and obviously you play it well and feel comfortable. That;'s the main thing! I just can't imagine what would cause the springs to need to be that far in. The rear of the bridge would be either raised, or lowered, from the store since the strings would not be properly tuned - and as I mentioned, they may not have even been properly stretched. All these minor things can cause many people to get frustrated with Floyd equipped guitars. I love them - but I never do "raises" using the trem bar - occasionally a slight Eddie Van Halen type dive ... I really could live with the bridge flush with the body and be fine. Hope you don't think I'm being a jerk or anything - I love your guitar and it sounds fantastic! Its just the tweaker in me that wants to get that bridge and springs just right :). And, you have to leave the nut unlocked for a few days and bend & tune until it settles, then lock it down. ROCK ON man!

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold Рік тому

      Thanks for taking the time to respond thoughtfully! I have it set that way because I despise bending a string while playing a normal fretted string right behind it and the Floyd raising up throwing the guitar out of pitch while doing so. The Floyd sits parallel to the body and dives just fine. It’s probably more stiff because the screws are all the way in and there are 10’s on but it’s how I prefer it. If I get another Floyd I may set it up differently as you have mentioned. Thanks for the kind words. Keep Rockin’ Hard!!

I recently read, or saw a video, of someone else talking about the bridge moving while doing a simple string bend/vibrato. Cool guitar, I’m planning to make this my next purchase…. Would you recommend upgrading to Floyd Rose Original, with some Grover Locks?

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold Рік тому

      Thanks! I don’t see it being a necessity to upgrade but the FR Original would be a superior metal if you have the extra cash. The main thing I’ve seen with the special is scarring from the cheaper metal that’s used. I’ve never played a FR Original but I would assume the scarring isn’t as bad because of the harder metal it’s made out of. The special has stayed in tune just fine for me so I don’t see it being a tuning stability issue but more of a longevity issue. As far as the locking tuners go, unless you’re planning on not locking down the nut I don’t see why you would need locking tuners. The string should be just fine locked at the nut. Having said all that, I am no FR expert by any means. I have put some time in on standard strat trems and set the Floyd up using the same principles and works exactly the same. Good luck! You’re going to love the guitar!!

    It doesn't seem like it does but, does the floyd goes up or just dive?

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold 2 роки тому

      It depends on how you set it up. If you raise the pole pieces higher than the body then you will have room to pull up. If you lower the pole pieces so the Floyd rests against the body then you will only be able to dive down and not pull up. This Floyd has little pieces underneath that hold the tuning rods in place so unless you take them off (this would be like what Eddie Van Halen did) it won’t sit flush on top of the body. So it seems as though it’s intended to sit a little bit off the body so you would be able to do dives and pull up with little issue. Check out my whammy test video on this guitar for more whammy exploration.

      Yea I can do that to provide a litter more depth as to what I did and why. I may make that video soon. In reference to your other question about fret work. I don’t see any reason to do fret work on it. The ends are slightly rough in some areas but I would be hesitant to use the word sharp. For how I play I don’t notice it, only if I run my hand along the sides. The low E string has some buzzing after the setup. I’ve raised it probably higher than I want to raise it and it still buzzes slightly so that would be the only issue I’ve noticed after setup.

      I admit it’s unorthodox, I’ve played that way for 18 years and have tried to open my hand up in the past here and there but it feels so unnatural, it completely changes the way I play, and I don’t have as much control so I think at this point I would have to completely start over if I opened my hand up and I don’t know if it would be worth it to me after playing this way for so long. If I for sure knew the benefits outweighed the time commitment to relearning I might would do it and I’m sure at some point I’ll try it again.

I just got some new strings and am going to string it up and see how it does. My bridge poles are also high so the action after the 12th fret is high so I’ll lower those when I change the strings and we’ll see if that helps as well.

    So what is your opinion of the pickups? Mine is that they're pretty bad. I'm putting in Duncan SSL-1's in the neck and middle, and a Duncan JB at the bridge.

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold 3 роки тому

      I have debated putting a JB in the bridge as well. The bridge pickup reminds me of a coil tapped humbucker. It’s lacking some overall power. The neck pickup and middle pickup are your basic alnico sounding pickups. They are stratty. I already have a sss strat with 65 pickups in it and the lower output of the bridge of the 70s CV is making me want to put a hotter pickup in it. If vintage is your thing I think these sound fine. The bridge is a tad hotter than a normal strat bridge. If you’re wanting a hotter sound I would replace them. Hope that helped.

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold 3 роки тому

      Also the humbucker naturally sounds fuller. Gives off a Boston vibe or an early AC/DC sound compared to the normal brittleness of a single coil bridge.

    • @MrArnoldarnold
      @MrArnoldarnold 3 роки тому

      ...so I have spent over a month debating whether or not to replace the humbucker mainly with a JB, Tone Zone, or Pearly Gates. After hours of listening I’m going to keep the stock pups in. I think they are great overall for what I do. If I want to play harder metal songs I’ll either use this, my Les paul or just buy a guitar more geared towards that (charvel, Kramer, etc) that has a Floyd.
