Hi and welcome to my channel, my name is Martin, please join me in my white water progress mostly at Lee Valley, UK. Whilst I'm not new to paddling I am new to anything white water, so, if you can handle the many, many profanity bleeps and my poor attempt at humour, then do watch as I blindly swim towards a gold medal in wet exits.
A dismal session at Lee Valley 2/11/24
This session at Lee Valley WWC on the Legacy run was pants, I didn't do too good at all and the flow was pants too.

Another session at Lee Valley WWC on the Legacy run, including some surf, ferrying, 1 swim and 2 failed rolls at the end. I am liking the higher ferries across the smaller drops, I am building up to the bigger drops :) Boat - Pyrahna Burn 2 Paddle - Werner Surge bent (cranked) shaft Camera - DJI Action 4 1080/60 upscaled to 4k

👏
A shame that the second time it happens it flips me but it was a stronger hold, see my latest short video (2nd half of it) :)
Hi, I was on the same session as you - Bib No.47 in the red/ orange Jed: I have to say I agree with your comments that it was a dismal session and the flow was pants for most of the time. Many of the features just weren't "working" as normal - a real shame. Annoyingly this was also the case for the 12.30 session which I was also on.
Ah, nice to see you, I had to go through the video again to see who you are :) It was very disappointing to say the least, thanks for confirming. :( It also means that I can no longer do the 1st session of which is/was my 1st choice, although, I do try to pick the least busiest. If they do not have the Olympic on for most of the session then they should have 3 pumps running, heck, even 2.5 pumps would make a difference but I'm not sure if they can vary the speed of individual pumps, either that or lower the cost, it shouldn't be the same as the faster flow sessions. Thats a shame about the 12:30 session, I cannot remember if the Olympic was running at that time but it is this weekend.
I’m no expert but I thought your first run down was pretty good. 👍
Yeah, it wasn't too bad, I think flipping it going across the drop set the tone for the rest of the session, it was a shame about the flow being slow for about 95% of the 90 minutes, I was just starting to gain confidence with the faster flow. Sadly for the 1st session of the day there's no Olympic running now as they've changed the schedule so I will have to go later or just live with the same flow as the Little Ouse lol
I haven’t been for a while so that lower flow might suit me at the moment. I think I’ll book the 9th. 👍
@@latetowhitewater There is that, it would certainly suit some for sure, enjoy your paddle. I think the Thursday evening sessions have a slower flow too, thats when I did the two courses, the Intro and Developing WW. I am gutted because I much preferred the 2x 1hr sessions in the morning due to being about 80 minutes away, I could get there with minimal traffic. Doing the 9:30 gave you about 30 minutes or so warm up before they turn on the Olympic then the flow speeds up. It looks like I will have to do the 11am from now on, unless its too busy in that case I will choose the least busy session, if then ends up being the 9:30 then I will see ya there, shout me if ya notice me :)
@@SubParPaddler Yes I'm two hours away myself so it's always going to be the early sessions for me otherwise it's the whole day gone. You'd think they'd put all three pumps on when the Olympic isn't running, even if it's only for the last 30 minutes. All down to cost I suppose. I'll give you a shout if I spot you.👍
It may seem counter intuitive, but it you get pinned like that lift the upstream edge, so that the water goes under you rather than over!
Thank you, I had to watch it again as it was earlier on the year, I couldn't remember it. I was quite inexperienced back then and the flip happened so fast, I didn't have time to lean into the block but with what I know now I can normally anticipate it and start the lean before I hit the blocks, not always mind lol
Like the videos but wish you’d change up the music!
Thanks, the problem is finding decent free music, not only that, it takes ages going through all the music, I will try for next time :)
Good to see the new Helectron on the water. My son is eyeing this up to replace his Jed
Looks a cool kayak :)
Did you roll?
Not this time, I went to set up but the flow was quite strong and because I was wearing gloves thoughts of fumbling with the puller was at the front of my mind, in other words I chickened out quick smart 😂
See told you was easier and more fun on the first wave 🌊
Yeah, thanks, slowly getting the hang of it :)
Looked really washed out in places. Was. The Olympic on or off do you know, somethings changed
I think the Olympic was on, it was quite a slow flow as usual for about the 1st half hour but then it returned to about normal after then
Haha that was me that recognised you at the end! Hope your back gets better soon!
Ha, nice to meet you even though it was fleeting lol and thank you, I hope so too else I wont be able to paddle :'(
Is it getting colder
Yeah, without a doubt, the water was quite chilly now, deffo dry suit time, for me anyway :)
How do you upscale?
Hi, sorry for the long rely... I go from 1080 to 4k, not the 3840 but the 4096 but I have to lower the bitrate from 50mbps down to 20mbps else the file size ends up far too big ( this video was 27gb, I got it down to 11gb at 20mbps) and the encoding time for this old lappy takes far too long. This 70min video took about 7.5hrs to encode, I reckon it would have been at least double that had I not lowered the bitrate. Imagine what it would be like if I filmed it in the max 100mbps but then I think that it saves it as h.265 as opposed h.264 and that would then mean having to 1st encode lower res proxy files just so this machine can handle it, then do the editing and then encode again when finished editing, I bet that would take this old i7 lappy about 2 days in just encoding alone, no joke lol. Had I film in 4K, same issue, it would mean having to encode proxy files 1st, again this would add many, many extra hours in encoding and thats before I can even start editing it. If I just save in 1080 and upload to YT, YT's compression makes a mess of it as you can see from the 1st 10 videos (noticeable in the sky) I uploaded, these were recorded in 1080 and uploaded as 1080 (1st 10 videos i did). Therefore, upscaling to 4k actually improves YT's 1080 quality, compare this 1080 video ( ua-cam.com/video/egrR9gLNHiI/v-deo.html& ) with this video (in only 1080) and you will see the difference. Hope I didn't bore or confuse you lol
Oh wow thanks
Nice boof at around 53 mins
Yeah thanks, that was certainly the best boof attempt of the day :)
Almost sounded like I knew what was talking about 😂😂😂😂
certainly a lot more than I do lol
You paddled well 👍
It was a great session thanks to you, you helped me to feel more confident, thanks again, Stuart
It’s getting Colder🤘!!
Aint it just, it was nuggets in there, so glad I didn't swim lol I think my surfing is getting better too, not so scared getting up on the green but i did keep forgetting your advice to paddle as opposed to rudder :/
Instead of ruddering when your surfing try paddling for correction strokes you will stay in the hole longer instead of getting washed out
Thank you, I am down there Saturday morning so I will try that :)
I was there 22nd. Must have been in different sessions. One day will be in same lol Edit, just spotted myself. No idea how I didn’t recognise you on the day.
Its hard to miss me, i am the one that looks more comfortable on dry land lol
first lol
as ya do lol
Be rude not to lol
DOD YOU FORGET ABOUT US??!!
Life got in the way, sorry. I hurt me back and a one of my dogs past :(
top tip is to keep looking at ur paddle as u roll! it keeps ur head down for u
Thanks, i will try to remember that :)
Next video??
HI, yesterday was the 1st time down there in a couple of weeks, although i do still have a video to complete from 2 weeks ago, hopefully that will be on tomorrow and then yesterdays later in the week
I paddle the Olympic at LV fairly regularly and i *hate* that eddy with a passion. There's very few redeeming features to it other than it's one of the eddys you can get when trying to make all the eddys in a single run. It looks like your know what you did wrong, keep up the paddling! You're doing great 👍🏻
Hi and thanks for the comment, one of my main faults its not being aggressive enough especially when im unsure and this was a prime example, I think t was the 1st or second time in that eddy too but at least I know what to expect in future, btw, I've not been in it since lol. Thanks again and safe paddling :)
I recommend taking a rolling class to make your roll bomb-proof. Knowing that you can roll up from (nearly) any situation will give you enough confidence to paddle into big waves and stoppers. I did a class last month in Augsburg. The class costs some money but it's all worth it because it makes paddling so much more enjoyable. Greetings from Germany!
Hi, nice to speak to you and thank you, yes, this is what really need, I did some pool sessions over the last winter in the hopes that i would get some help but it was few and far between. I will have to see if there is anyone local to LV that can help on the days that i go down there, i dont mind losing 30 minutes or so just rolling.
What type of paddle do you have? Im interested in getting a bent shaft paddle just not sure what to get nothing too fancy but practical!
Hi, its the Werner Surge, I wanted the Stikine but no where had it in stock at that time :( If you can try some paddles out that would be better, I think Matt at the Shop at LV may do this, or you local club or shop?
I think your doing really well but your seeming a bit hesitant you need to quit being scared and man up😂 you know you have a chance you can roll up I’ve seen you in other videos, what I’m saying is you have to start pushing yourself getting into the bigger water trying scary things like surfing bigger waves catching stronger eddy’s
Hi, and yeah, you're spot on, I really want to get stuck in a hole or carve across the green (actual drop), I just don't have the bottle, I really need a buddy to encourage etc. As for surfing a bigger wave, have you seen my surfing? Lol 😂 as soon as I hit the smooth the bow gets thrown out, I need to do that more so I can get used to the power :)
Keep practicing we all start somewhere looks like your lifting your head too fast. I found reverse screw was better for me as i used less power and more technique dame with rolling in weak side
Thanks,I think my head is the main issue most of the time, that and at times i forget to hip flick and stamp the opposite foot, too much to remember lol
@@SubParPaddlerHead but also try keep paddle on surface, push blade up and watch it mover over the surface, follow it with eyes can still get up even if head comes up, it shouldn’t but if is possible if blade stays towards surface
Good stuff mate, if you’ve got the time and the lung capacity, I’d recommend pushing your paddle to the surface before you try any sweep, this helped me get a better grasp of the angle of the paddle and improved my roll significantly! Keep going mate love your videos and hope to see you on the Olympic in no time!
nice I go kayaking in the legacy
sorry if this is mean bujt the music is too loud and annoying
Sorry, its hard to judge how loud it should be, I will back it off some on future videos.
Do you think the edges on the burn catch you out?
Hi, yes, 100% they are great for carving and quick turns but I'm not quite there yet, if you're not on the ball they trip you up quite easily.
Watched a few of your videos to get a feel for the course before doing my assessment and that was me going down the feature and trying to roll multiple times 😂
Ha cool, I was hoping you'd see it, I can't believe how many times you tried and still rolled up, I am pooped at 2 tries max lol, well done :)
what grips have you got on your paddle?
Hi, I use amalgamating tape as its thicker and softer feel than eleccy tape and then i sand it back a little not much though.
Looking good mate your are improving more and more. Great video 👍
Thank you, that session felt good for the most part :)
Just missed me on my assessment in this video, will defo keep an eye out for you on the legacy course
I take it you passed, congrats :) You can't miss me, I will be the one that looks like he doesn't have a clue ;)
I envy you - you paddle quite often. You should try the Olympic course soon. I think you are ready for it 👍
Hi, I go once a week, if I could afford the fuel I would go more often. As for the Olympic, thanks for the vote of confidence but Ive not even gotten fully into a hole yet (nerves lol) and from what I can tell, that's a must for the Olympic, not only that, I can't roll consistently and that would be beneficial on there. I may very well take the advanced course (Olympic) next year, in the meantime I'm hoping to practice in the holes on the Legacy :)
What’s the black tape lookin thing on the left side of your boat?
Hi, I put that there becuase I keep catching my thumb knuckle on it.
It's what the PFD is for. Just bobbing about. Smile, it's a learning moment.
I'm grateful for the videos (I'm in one and also spotted several of my MCC paddling pals too). I'll say hello when I see you. I feel like we are on the same journey, albeit I'm a few weeks of practice behind you. Thanks for posting these, very useful.
You're very welcome, they've helped me no end watching them back, especially when I was on the Developing WW course, shows me where I've gone wrong and I can see how to fix it next time, doesn't always work mind :/ see you on the course, I am there this Saturday morning :)
You were taught right that person was not doing what they should be I think they just didn’t care to get out of the way
Thanks, I thought that was the case.
Your rolls are looking good mate. Epic video as always. 🤙🏻
Thank you, i just wish they were consistent :/
How do you mess that up😂😂😂
I think it was only yhr 2nd time in that eddy, might even been the 1st time and being new to white water i didnt realise that i needed a fair bit of power ro paddle out into the flow, a mistake only a rookie could make :)
Are you going to make a long video? Or not this weekend?
Yep, they just take longer to edit as i cant do them in a full sitting, this one will be a bit shorter too as I wasnt there as long as i normally am.
Congratulations 🎉
Thank you :)
Thats an anxiety jnducing incident. Glad to see you found your way out of it. Cheers, ignore the haters.
Cheers chap :)
This is man made white water course? I'm going to inflate my inner tube now.
