Landing on the Loneliest Road - Middlegate Station, NV
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
A visit to Middlegate Station in Nevada. Located along US 50, the "Loneliest Road in America", the station serves as a resource for food, gas, and lodging for travelers. Pilots have frequented this destination for a number of years, using the old alignment of US 50 as their runway. Middlegate traces its history back to the Pony Express era where it served as a horse change-over location for the...

Lost in the Nevada Triangle - Stearman Adventure
Переглядів 3,8 тис.5 років тому
The Nevada Triangle Fly-In was different: the location of the fly-in was secret. Instead, pilots were given a special treasure map and a set of clues to use that map to guide them to the fly-in. About a dozen pilots managed to make it out to take on the challenge. Weather became a challenge though and quickly sent us scampering to better cover.

    Great video! Thank you. I understand you have the O-200. Im considering buying a nice one with the O-235. Do you have any thoughts on this combo? The empty weight is 950.

    • @FlyingFiddler
      @FlyingFiddler 2 роки тому

      I would be very shocked if one with an O-235 is truly 950 empty. They’re usually more like 1050. But if it truly is that light, should be quite a screamer with the 100+ HP. They are heavy on the nose, so can more easily be nosed over with braking. O-235 parts are much more expensive (check price of an O-235 jug kit v. an O-200). Clearance within the engine cowling is almost nil, making simple tasks like swapping a magneto a pain by comparison. O-235 is regarded as an engine that can go a long time…but do most owners fly frequently enough to to realize that?…YMMV.

  • @Andykev

    Wow memory lane. Thank you for this video. I last visited Middlegate Station in 1988 via BMW motorcycle on a ride on US 50 to Austin, NV for an overnight m/c gathering. At that time, long stretches of US 50 in that area were gravel, so I am guessing the highway was improved and realigned, and the landing strip section was what was then the main road. Might be fun to head back, this time by Cessna. My C150K might not enjoy that rough strip however. My most memorable impression at Middlegate was a "mule skinner" with no shirt, long beard, and full beard, out of the pages of an old movie... with three pack mules .. with mining and camp equipment. Ah. America!

      The laws for landing on roads are enforced by the individual states and local governments. Thankfully the FAA only cares that we do not operate recklessly. Good to know there’s still 140’s flying all over the world!

    Is there any such thing as holding it in ground effect too long? I mean no rising terrain or fixed obstruction, so why not hold it there until speed stabilizes?

    • @FlyingFiddler
      @FlyingFiddler 2 роки тому

      Depends on the conditions and the terrain. At a certain point you aren’t going to get any more RPM (which is the main reason I hold it down…More RPM->More HP), and at that point should pitch to an airspeed that maintains that RPM as best as possible (leaning and monitoring to make sure you’re maximizing engine capability for the conditions). With practice that becomes second nature in a simple little engine like this. The high DA at Leadville certainly tried that theory to the limit…little motor just didn’t have much to give up there.
