  • A visit to Middlegate Station in Nevada. Located along US 50, the "Loneliest Road in America", the station serves as a resource for food, gas, and lodging for travelers. Pilots have frequented this destination for a number of years, using the old alignment of US 50 as their runway.
Middlegate traces its history back to the Pony Express era where it served as a horse change-over location for the express riders. After the demise of the Pony Express to the telegraph, the station served as a stage coach and freight depot for the local mining districts. With the declaration of the Lincoln Highway (now US 50) in the early 20th century, it continued as a road-side resource. A period of dormancy following the building of I-80 was ended when new owners took over the property in recent decades and re-opened the station as a restaurant, gas, and lodging location. The food is excellent, the decor on-point, and the location surreal. Go check it out!

Wow memory lane. Thank you for this video. I last visited Middlegate Station in 1988 via BMW motorcycle on a ride on US 50 to Austin, NV for an overnight m/c gathering. At that time, long stretches of US 50 in that area were gravel, so I am guessing the highway was improved and realigned, and the landing strip section was what was then the main road. Might be fun to head back, this time by Cessna. My C150K might not enjoy that rough strip however. My most memorable impression at Middlegate was a "mule skinner" with no shirt, long beard, and full beard, out of the pages of an old movie... with three pack mules .. with mining and camp equipment. Ah. America!

Home of the Monster burger. If you look above the pool table there is a Canadian $5 bill with my name on it.

Very nice...Looks like a fun place to fly into. But that road looks awful....Would they cart you off to prison if you landed on the highway?

Probably signs sticking up on 50.. The paved road to Gabbs could work (less traffic), but might be signs there, too.
