January and feb were very wet and cold, so running has only started in march, a new siding has been added, the baby deltic has a new lead acid battery, and some ballast has been put down. I have also built some more mk1 coaches. I now have 3 TSO, 2 BSO 1 suburban second, 1 suburban brake and a BG.

Summery of the Progress on the Gauge 3 Garden Railway in 2021. We now have a complete up and down line and 1 siding. There is roof for future expansion of an addition 2 loops. The station now has its GWR type 7 box in place, it just happens to fit nicely on a standard sized concrete block. The Bachmann Brass Small Prarie is now up and running altho its perfomance is pitiful compared with the Mo...

We look at the kippo railway at the end before it was dismantled, to looking at the new railway we have been building at our new house. Most models built by myself, track was recycled from the old railway and the 8 foot radius curves were redone to a 12 foot radius which is far more suited to mainline engines and faster running. There will be a second running line added in 2021 hopefully by spr...

How to assemble one of the Kippo models resin coach kits. Part 1 consists of building a jig, fitting the metal bars and partitions. Then assembling the side panels. Please note that there are some updates to this kit. Due to some improved molding techniques, the partitions no longer need sanding to required height! The problem with some side panels not quite matching has also been solved, so th...

The railway is starting to mature now with moss growing up through the tracks and the rails and sleepers starting to weather, work has been slow on the goods/storage yard as i have spent most of last year working on designing resin mk1 coach kits, this BSO is the 2nd from the molds and has many revisions. Im currently working on some TSOs too. The 4 cream and crimson mk1s that i made a few year...
Building a garden railway, gauge 3 hall visits another railway

The hall went for a visit to another garden railway this weekend, i took some wagons and the baby deltic too. The hall is starting to look complete, cab details, nameplates and lamp irons next. The drive system is working well now that i have re geared it for more torque and less top speed, it pulled 8 kingscale coaches no problem , which are very heavy at 8kg each, even though i had forgotten ...

The modified hall is looking more complete now it has its coupling rods. The next job is to adjust the suspension as it sits slightly low at the rear, tender also. Then im going to adjust the gearing as a scale 90 mph is a bit hairy on 8 foot radius curves.

The modified hall so far. The loco is tender driven, powered by 2x 365 motors running 18 volts, it is geared to do 90mph and has a useable tractive effort of 2kg, i would need to add a lot of weight to get any more pulling power or power both loco and tender. It is controlled by a peter spoerer ESC and an " rc trains " controller that can handle 12 trains at once. All the axles are sprung and t...

Garden railway in gauge 3. Running in the modified hall. The tender drive has duel 365 motors running at 18 volts, about 80 watts of power at the wheels, the gear train is about 75% efficient. The tender has 5kg of tractive effort, but requires alot of weight added , about 20kg so i have reduced its pulling power to 2kg so that the springs are not bottomed out. It has a scale speed of 90 mph bu...

The austerity tank has a temporary battery pack today. I decided to try running the motor on 18 volts instead of 12. It has much more power and didnt get hot, i suspect the motor is 18-24 volts, not 12. The 06 shunter has had an extra belt added, so it has 2 pulleys on the motor, this has stopped the belt slipping and it has much more torque now, even under stall, it wont slip. The baby deltic ...

I really like the wider shots lke at 9:39 - the close up ones don't do it justice!
@williamsworkshopuk thanks! I compiled shots from various people's cameras and phones, I didn't have a chance to take much footage.. it was a busy day!
Has to be one of the best g3 videos out there
@Gauge3 thanks! And thank you for coming! The 8F is a stunning loco, and a great performer,
Charming 👍💜😊
Señor Perez, Good Morning. Whe running the locos on my own track I *do* use a lifting cradle to move yhe locos to and from the house. The locos jad been sent on ahead wrapped in towels and in blue IKEA bags. The chait was there for me as I cannot stand for long periods due to a motorcyle accident in my 20's. But the locos are easy to use and a boy can safely use them.
this is great, i love it. how many of those are live steam? the Mallard appears to be at least.
The 4MT, the 14xx, and Mallard were all live steam. There was an electric 14xx and his class 47, GWR Manor plus another one whose ID escapes me but we were all surprised at how much it pulled
@@ralphbrades4378 yeah honestly, those are some heavy loads. pretty impressive!
Thanks! We were lucky with the weather, no rain all day!
Very nice indeed ✌️💜😊
brilliant
These are awesome, if only I had the room✌️👍😊
They do take up a lot of space! Both in the house on shelves and out on the track, they also take a lot of time to bring out and put out on the track, bringing out 8 takes me a careful 20 minutes! That's not bashing the walls or coaches coming down the stairs one at a time... Then trying to couple them up involves either alot of patience or usually a lot of swearing!
@@eddywilliams6212 I bet. I chose O in the end - that's bad enough in a small end terrace suburban! My dad models SM32 so it was tempting to have some standard gauge G3 (although not a perfect scale match it would have been a nice juxtaposition in the garden). I'm wondering if I should have stuck with 4mm or 3mm.....but the weight and size of larger scales in the garden is a wonder to behold 😊😄👍✌️
109.5 mm for a hand built model toy lets call it 110 mm i dont think most builders can get to machine tolerance
Eddy can I ask what are you using for power to trains? RC or electric through track?
Hi, All locos are battery powered, with packs ranging from 12- 18 volts, the transmitter is a deltang RCT- Tx22 selecta, which i can control 12 trains at once, with cruise control and inertia, the speed controllers in the locos are from fosworks, the recievers are rx102
@@eddywilliams6212 thanks same as my own. I have 2 LGB stainz converted to Deltang as well. Your collection is fabulous. Looking forward to seeing more. Regards
@@kendaly1312 great! I do like the selecta function, it's very handy when shunting and you want to leave a loco running on the mainline, altho i had to replace the board in my handset due to a near death experience.. I was walking through the car park after a model show, carrying the controller and lightning struck the fence about 20 feet away! And it fried the main board! The guys at rc trains.co.uk were very helpful and repaired it for me 😀
Thanks Eddie 👍
No problem!
Always love your videos. Still love that class 06 of yours :-)
Thanks! And yes the 06 is a firm favourite of mine! Had a lot of interest, i might be turning it into a kit soon.. It would be suitable for tight radius, i think 4 foot would work, esp since it has oval buffers
Ren here from Pomona Calif. I've been doing some repairs on some old tracks. I was thinking of using 1 x 6 to lay the track on, like what you did, but with wood. Cool video gave some good ideals, take care.
Hi, yes that would make a solid base, it would need support every few feet, as it might sag after a while, what i have done on my latest railway is build an upside down U profile using 3/4 inch x 6 inch pieces, which makes a rigid based without the need for too many posts in the ground, cheers, eddy from scotland
Great !
WOW 🔥🔥🔥🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼. Easy video ranking = P r o m o s m!!!
Quite different to your 2018 railway but good to see you back on the wagon.
Yes! 12 foot radius curves instead of 8, but funnily enough, the up and down lines are each only 2 yard track panels longer than the old railway, i reused all of the old track and moved the sleepers to make the new curves.
Brilliant Eddy - superb what you have achieved with the relocated line. Keep going with the lovely G3 buildings you make - Im delighted with my signal box. Paul
Cracking video - the snowplough, just like the real thing, had to take a couple of run ups, superb! 👍👍💜 Could we know a bit more about your stock please, Eg methods of construction etc, I'm particularly interested in Radio Control, battery types, RC equipment. I watched your video on MK1 coaches - very nice👍😊 My dad models SM32 dead rail and I'm thinking of the same in O gauge using Deltang. 🤔🤔🤞👍😊
I use the deltang system for the radio, the controller is the one where you can control 12 trains at once, its quite good, the receiver and esc combo is such a neat little unit, you could probs fit it into a 00 gauge coach or wagon, and it handles 18 volts max and 3 amps max, for the bigger locos, they have fosworks esc, which works OK with the deltang, and construction of locos - I should really altho i havnt constructed a loco in a while, i would like to make another couple of hall locos, so when I do-I will make some construction videos!
Great video Eddy; good to here of layout progress. Particularly enjoyed seeing your snowplow in action; something which I think about every year, but forget once the snow has melted!
Yes i quite agree! There is snow forecast in the next week or so here, so i should really print out a decent plough with its own wheels and weighted I think
just a half loco for proving the bogies - check out apple tree railway gauge 3
Could I get away with using them for g scale or are they too wide, ideally I wouldn't like them to be more than 11cm wide? 😃 Or is there a way I could just buy the outer skins of the coach because thats all I need really.
They are about 12 cm wide, for G scale, bearing in mind, they are about 3 foot long, so you would need to shorten the length, probs get 2 or 3 coaches out of one kit, i could sell the sides separately, but i have updated the way I make the side panels, so now the inner black skins have been replaced by a one piece curved clear plastic panel, this doubles as the glazing, making Assembly much quicker, but it also makes the side panels the most expensive part of the kit..
Legend has it that the neighbours are still washing the concrete dust off their windows. Seriously though, good job.
I made sure I did it on a windy day! But yes there was a lot of dust!
It looks great so far! I love the station building.
Thanks, it is based on the one at lady bank in fife , altho a little shorter in Length
Ingenious! Good eye for upcycling items too!👍😉😊
Cheers, i do like to reuse things, the bridge was made from posts that I pull up from the woods, where young trees had been supported with a post and plastic tube, but had now grown and burst through the tubes so we're no longer needed, for my next railway in my videos, you might notice the raised sections, these were made using over a 1000 of these posts, which came in very handy!

Wonderful stuff. Wish I had the space for G3 (let alone the skills). Well done.
I have seen your videos and your stuff is plenty good enough for Gauge 3! Just need to widen your track! Gauge 3 short wheel based wagons and 0-4-0 locos can cope with 4 foot radius easily, and larger locos-7-8 foot radius, i personally would like to add an extra rail for running some lgb stuff, just need to figure out how to make the junctions on such large radius points as the blades are about a foot long..
@@eddywilliams6212 That’s very generous, thank you. Insanely jealous of your coaches!
Thanks for making this video, I enjoyed watching it. I've only recently come across Kippo models (on Ebay) and really like them as I've been on the lookout for a more British style to use on my g-scale layout which I am planning. What glue do you use for fixing the guttering, downpipes, etc?
Hi, thanks for watching, i use ordinary superglue, but lots.. It sticks very well to polyurethane resin,
Interesting method of track bed. Not a sleeper in sight. House and outbuildings have a curriously ex WD (war department) air about them.
Hi, Yes no sleepers when I built this line, and the house, is an row of old cottages, which had bathrooms added on the back in the 1920s, and yes a very similer style of construction to war buildings, with whinstone powder added to the Harling for that tough grey finish
Superb!
Hello great video, out of interest how many feet or yards long is your oval track?
Hi, ONE lap of the track is about 45 meters give or take a bit depending on which track your on
The film of the 06 on the short freight starting at about 1:19 is really evocative. Great work :-)
Thanks 😄
Looking good. Love the little class 06 shunter.
Cheers, it was a scratch build, mostly plasticard, acrylic and the odd bit of brass,
Is the dmu a kit?
The dmu is a kit that I'm developing, as a kit of parts, i have done the body, bogies, but still needs an interior and all the stuff under the frames done like engines, battery boxes ect, i will be doing that this year
I always wanted a garden railway. Maybe one day. I have just subbed so that I can keep an interested eye on your progress. Cheers from Australia
Cheers, hopefully I will gettnner track built in the spring, it involves quite a bit of pointwork..
nice work Eddie you been bust then
Yeah, been very busy! I'm sad we had to move from Kippo Farm, with its fabulous scenery backdrops, but the new railway is more accessible for us and wider curves
Heya, is there any chance of a part 2?
This kit has had a few improvments since this video was made, the partitions no longer need sanded to adjust height, and the problem with mismatched sides has now been sorted in the moding process, this was happening when the long stretchy molds were being moved , so now i dont move the molds while they are setting, part 2 will be coming shortly, showing roof assembly, which is now easy due to the new one piece roof section, which was completed a few weeks ago, and has had several moldings done and tested in the sun for warping- which they have passed the test!
Nice line, but nothing about how it was built
Hi Tom, This is the last bit of footage from the 1/24 scale line.. As it says in the description, and the title-building a garden railway, you may have noticed that this is one of a series of videos showing progress as i build a garden railway, but you are right, there are no cement mixers or spades in this video..
Hi. I am really impressed and inspired by your 1/24 miniature railway. I am interested in your choice of 1/24 scale or rather why it is not more widely adopted. It seems to me to be an obvious choice for modelling railways that were built in feet and inches. Instead, the common scales are non-intuitive or mix up metric and imperial units (eg 10mm / foot scale etc). I am intending to build a garden railway based on Tasmanian 3'6" (1067mm). By happy chance at 1/24 scale the gauge is near enough to gauge 1 track 44.46mm vs 45mm that I don't mind the error. However, there is virtually no British outline (Tasmania got a lot of its railway from Britain including vacuum brakes) in 1/24 scale so everything other than the track must be scratch built.
Hi, i started in 1/24 scale as its a nice scale to work in, not too big or small, it all started when I was a kid and used to have lots of playmobil which is 1/24 scale, i have moved up to the more common 1/22.5 now, and yes everything is still scratch built, altho i buy wheels
Where is part 2?
Part 2 is to do the roof, however--I am completely changing the way the roof is molded and constructed, so once I have done that, there will be a video on that, im very close to finishing it, the prototype roof has been done, i just need to make a few adjustments to the mold
Great atmosphere here Eddy, it was only the Corona bottle that reminded me it wasn’t real!
Where's part 2?
Hi, i am in the middle of moving house and re setting up the work shop, will get it done soon!
Look forward to the next installment. Excellent
Ok i give up, whats the story with the half peak loco?
I think its a test bed for future ideas and bogie layouts, it is named Hillock, im not sure if its ever going to be built into a full length loco, perhaps Tim could enlighten us on that one!
The new coach is a big improvement over the last lot you had so looking forward to more of those running, keep up the good work! gardenrails.org
Looking more and more realistic every video mate brilliantly done. If it was mine I'd buy a bit of weight in those coaches stop them rocking and a neat sound over joints love it tho pal
The coaches have a foam damper to stop the springs from bouncing, on this coach, i havnt fitted them or tightened down the springs yet, trial runs! The new coaches weigh about 4kg, so plenty heavy, the ones by kingscale in my last video weigh in at 8kg which is pretty hefty!
Great job.
That's mint I wonder if that scale would go well with my scaleart trucks
Thanks, been alot of work so far What scale are the the trucks?
eddie williams they are 1:16th
@@marknewell7355 ok thats quite a bit bigger! I think 3.5 inch gauge would be closer than 2.5,
eddie williams do you know a gauge that would be close to that scale if such a thing exists
@@marknewell7355 yes if you scale 3.5 inch gauge track, it works out about 1/16, as far as i know, not many people model in that scale, its more towards model engineering where people build their own and take them to tracks where they are powerful enough to pull people behind, if you look on ebay, there are quite a few 3.5 inch live steam locos
