  • Garden railway in gauge 3. Running in the modified hall. The tender drive has duel 365 motors running at 18 volts, about 80 watts of power at the wheels, the gear train is about 75% efficient. The tender has 5kg of tractive effort, but requires alot of weight added , about 20kg so i have reduced its pulling power to 2kg so that the springs are not bottomed out. It has a scale speed of 90 mph but im going to change the meccano pulleys to the bigger ones to reduce its speed, as my corners are too tight for such fast running. I could power up the loco also but 2kg of effort is enough to pull at least 30kg up a 1/40 gradient and the gradient on my line is only 1/200. The loco will be tightly attached to the tender so that the rear driving wheels dont quite touch the outside rail in the corners for good reverse running, as you can see, there is almost buffer lock in the corners and so i might put wider buffers on the coaches. Im very happy with how the drive system works, with all 3 axles sprung and working well, im using a peter spourer speed controller and rc trains controller and reciever. I belive lights can be added and sound which i might have a go at later.

Well Ed, I've now caught up on all your videos. It's fascinating and inspiring to see how the railway and your techniques have developed over the years. That Hall is getting to look great. Here's looking forward to the future of the line.

Noel Adams thanks, the hall is my first, mostly metal mainline loco, and i have learnt alot from building it so far, there is no soldering so far, all welded! Only because i can weld better than i can solder.. and steel is cheap as chips, ie old dvd player cases, i started it in january and have spent 11 weekends on it so far, not sure what livery to give the hall yet, i have never done lining so it might go in a gwr livery lightly weathered :-)
