Paul Motian Quartet - August 11, 1987 - Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York City
This concert occurred on a warm Tuesday night on the upper east side of Manhattan in the fence-enclosed outdoor gardens of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (now called Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum). The museum is in the former NYC residence of Andrew Carnegie, and the grounds. accordingly, were a very nice location to see some outdoor jazz. Between Motian's batterie, Frisell's arsenal of electric guitar pyrotechnics and Lovano's Coltranesque wailing, the band more than held its own against the police and fire sirens, car horns and other ambient sounds one hears on the streets of NYC. Frisell and Motian in particular were fiery that night. This lineup was not common. Essentially it was the intermediary between the classic Motian Trio and the quintet that had recorded a few albums before Motian, Frisell and Lovano realized that another sax and bass held them back from their full potential. Not to be mean to Drewes, who is a fine player, but he doesn't add much to the this lineup. Motian was an amazing composer, and most of the tunes here are his. I can't think of another drummer with a comparable level of composition output. Tony Williams wrote some nice things, but Motian wrote dozens of great tunes.
Paul Motian - drums
Bill Frisell - guitar
Joe Lovano - tenor saxophone
Billy Drewes - soprano and tenor saxophones
00:00 Gang of Five
11:37 Fiasco
19:01 Once Around the Park
27:58 Monk's Mood (T. Monk)
35:27 Misterioso (T. Monk)
44:33 Cathedral Song
50:43 Dance
59:50 Yallah
All compositions by Paul Motian except as indicated.
I recorded this on a Sony Pro Walkman D6C with Sony ECM-102 stereo microphone. Uploaded solely for educational purposes and historical interest. Enjoy

Mike Stern Trio with Harvie Swartz and Victor Lewis 1985 at 55 Christopher Street, New York City
Переглядів 855День тому
Mike Stern's long-running gig at the bar 55 Christopher Street in the West Village of NYC in the 1980s was legendary. Over the course of a few years, he played with about every configuration of leading jazz bassists and drummers, playing mostly standards. I obtained this recording in a trade within a year of this performance. I don't have any information on the date. This tape is not a full per...
John Zorn performs "Cobra" live with Bill Frisell and many others - Roulette, NYC July 18, 1985

Cobra has come to be regarded by many as the best of John Zorn's "game" pieces, and has continued to be performed over the years. It also from what I've read has the most complex rules and structures of his game pieces, which tended to pit musicians against each other in solos, duos, and more at any given time. The musicians were given cues by the Prompter (who Zorn explains is not the conducto...
Carla Bley and Steve Swallow Duets radio broadcast - August 28, 1988 - Lincoln Massachusetts

Carla Bley and Steve Swallow were such a close musical (and eventually romantic) pair, and each was/is such a great composer. I put Carla in the top ten, maybe five, jazz composers of all time. To me she is up there with Shorter, Monk, Mingus and Ellington as a composer of the most beautiful melodies and harmonies. It's so sad that she passed away last year. Swallow is such a unique talent on b...

As a follow-up to my last post, here is Set 2 of Paul Bley with John Abercrombie and Glen Moore (not to slight the great Barry Altschul, but he isn't what made this band remarkable, since he always played with Bley). This set contains three jazz standards, but don't be fooled into thinking this is a straight-ahead set. Abercrombie and Moore led the group into some extended out-there improv on A...

In 1985 I had seen and greatly enjoyed Paul Bley with John Scofield and Steve Swallow (both sets of which are available on my channel), so when a year later I saw a Sweet Basil ad in the Village Voice announcing a Bley gig with John Abercrombie and Glen Moore (and again Barry Altschul), I had to go. Tim Berne has been in New York for many decades now, and always creating interesting music. This show was around the time he caught a good break and signed a short-lived deal with Columbia Records that resulted in the wild Fulton Street Maul album with Bill Frisell. I was hoping this would be that band, as I used to see Frisell whenever I could. Although this wasn't that band, it is a crack bun...

I recently uploaded the first set of this stellar performance by Bass Desires. Here is set two, as promised in that first posting. Although the songs Samurai Hee-haw and Bass Desires were repeated in both sets, you get to hear different solos by Scofield and Frisell. Frisell's solo in Bass Desires devolves into him playing one of his classic 1980s loopy mad scientist experiments (starting at 57...

Bass Desires was a jazz supergroup led by Marc Johnson that was destined not to last very long (it's surprising it lasted about 4 years), since every member is so talented that there were too many other projects and bands to lead. This configuration of the Paul Bley Quartet recorded two albums for ECM, Fragments, in January 1986, and The Paul Bley Quartet, which was recorded a few weeks after this club performance. Mangelsdorf was a master and innovator of multiphonics on the trombone. He's probably best known for his 1976 concert in Berlin with Jaco Pastorious and Alphonse Mouzon. Thank you so much - have been looking for a recording from this tour for years. Still angry at myself for missing it as I marvel at the self-titled studio date from mid tour. I knew someone who caught this group in the UK and who remarked that Frisell spent half the gig without playing or even holding the guitar. In an interview from the period Bley referred to the group ending due to Frisell "graduating" - a euphemism for his pay-scale rising which necessitated him cutting his input to honour the contract?

Motian is unbelievably one of the under-recognized greats. He's still one of my very favorites. From Evans to Jarrett to his own (over 30) great albums. His musical evolution was oh so seamless and a wonder to behold. It must've been great to hear such a concert in that setting. I saw a few at the MoMa outdoor garden in the early to mid-noughts, but nothing as cool as this. Thanks, as always, for the upload!

I agree the Rolling Stone list is a joke, but Joni is not the example I would have chosen. She was pretty innovative harmonically and in experimenting with open tunings, so there is a case to be made she deserves her spot.. I mean, Johnny Ramone ahead of Frank Zappa?????.

I was wondering how Moore ended up in Bley's orbit, so I looked him up. Turns out he played on the two Bley synthesizer show early 70s albums (one with Annette Peacock). Then a year later, he played on Peacock's "I'm the One". He's done about a dozen sideman dates.

I agree with your comments on Glenn Moore. Oregon was a great bridge for me, 45 years ago, from trippy hippie music in jazz. I guess maybe he was more of a homebody, unlike Ralph Towner, and didn’t want to spend his time away from Oregon seeking out adventurous musical settings. Very cool recording. A lost chapter, a missing link, a road washed away…
