- I'm not sure if this was a radio broadcast or a soundboard recording, but it is a pretty clean 46 minutes of the classic Wynton Quintet with Branford, Kenny and Tain, with Phil Bowler on bass. I think this band hit its peak in early 1985 before Branford and Kenny moved on to other gigs, but there is some good playing here in 1983.
Wynton Marsalis - trumpet
Branford Marsalis - tenor saxophone
Kenny Kirkland - piano
Phil Bowler - bass
Jeff "Tain" Watts - drums
00:00 My Ideal (Whiting/Robin/Chase)
12:15 Twilight (W Marsalis)
33:40 Paraphernalia (W Shorter) (incomplete)
Uploaded solely for educational purposes and historical interest. Enjoy.
1st tune is "My Ideal". Love this band fresh from Wynton's "Think of One" album. Beautiful thanks you!
Thank you!
This is very close to the first time I heard this band, in Ann Arbor. They played Paraphernalia then too. A lot of circular breathing on those long held notes on the theme, which freaked us kids out but was... secondary to everything else that goes on in that tune
Thank you very much for sharing this, Stephen! The opening selection is the standard, "My Ideal", and the closing selection is Wayne Shorter's "Paraphernalia".
Thanks so much for the IDs!
Kenny sounds like Herbie!!!!
Nah...kenny sounds like kenny RIP.
Great playing. Recording is a half step low.
Thanks. I'll see if I can do something about it.
This man has been criticized as a "purist" and a sell out for ages. One thing is for certain, though. He is and has always been an exceptional musician who has produced many great, not just good recordings. As far as being a purist goes....hell, he's recorded collaborations with both Willie Nelson and Eric Clapton. LOL
I know early on Miles and Stanley Crouch got all over him for being too much of a purist, but I don't think that criticism aged well given the breadth of Wynton's many projects since the early 80s.
@@StephenBuckingham I think Miles may have been pissed that Columbia was promoting Wynton as the next big thing as Miles was making his comeback. I know that these days, Crouch seems to be firmly in the Marsalis camp as he's written many a liner note for Wynton.
@@steverickenbacher7110 That sounds right. I think I got mixed up on Crouch. He was all over Miles for the electric stuff.
@@StephenBuckingham Yup, he downright trashed Bitches Brew. LOL
