I have 4 methods of fire-starting. I've always carried a lighter but haven't used it over 4 years. A ferro rod is my first choice always and usually have my campfire lit withing 3 strikes. @@vvs3796 Hi there thanks for watching and comments. If I've read your question correctly, you're asking why I stopped my attempt? The answer is simply that there was a combination of events which resulted in my becoming completely burnt out and it was ill advisable to continue, this then instigated an evacuation plan so as to get to a place of safety and assistance. The main problems I faced, were:- The Weather; for the most part it was torrential rain, there was hail and very strong winds. The Terrain; was very, very wet, boggy, muddy and slippery making life extremely uncomfortable and at points dangerous. My health, bearing in mind my age and medical conditions normally, deteriorated rapidly resulting in a metabolic meltdown and increased blood toxicity, I also unknowingly contracted Covid 19 which didn't help Nutrition; I found it increasingly difficult, to eat anything. Travel; from where I live to get to Euston is a nightmare. I took the Caledonian Express. The food was terrible to say the least and the sleeping accommodation (bunk bed) was noisy, cramped and uncomfortable. I got no rest, then ran for the ferry and straight into the walk. Hope that helps. 👍

I 'failed' too.. september 2023, rain all the time.. at day seven in Kinlochewe I had a large painful blister, my shoes (barefoot) were falling apart and my Google Pixel 6a screen turned blue because of the weather.. I have had wet feet for the entire journey but I loved every step of it.. so beautiful, so many nice encounters, the amazing scenery.. Next time I will not wear barefoot shoes anymore because I really did not like walking on sharp stones with these shoes. I will use trail runner shoes. I will also not use my mobile phone with OS Maps for orientation but use my Garmin GPS because that is much more resilient to Scottish weather. I took a Garmin Inreach with me and now I will use the new GPS67 with builtin inreach.. this has a great battery life. Loved to hear your story.. so many things come back.. in March I am hoping to do the 7 day Isle of Skye trail and in April I will do another attempt and do the entire trail again. Take it from me, you did fantastically well to get so far along the Cape Wrath Trail. You should be very proud of your achievement- I only wish I could get so far along this trail. You might be interested in the Cape Wrath Trail guidebook published by Cicerone.

Amazing what you need to plan for a walk like this. I believe you can still send parcels to post offices for them to hold for you. If this is still so, you could send your food and maps to them and save wait.
