Following CN L588 along the Eldorado Subdivision
Hey there! glad to be uploading again.
I've been intending on doing this chase and creating this video for quite some time now, for this is the last train that runs through Saline County, Illinois and my hometown of Galatia. This is a once a week operation typically running on Mondays for delivery/pickup from Tri-County Chemical in Eldorado, Illinois. This track cuts through some classic Southern Illinois scenery and makes for some really great shots. I had previously spent two other occasions on waiting for this train to show in recent weeks and had no luck but thankfully on my third attempt i got it!
All the photographs I shot from this day are up on my website

    Back in the mid 70s myself and two buddies walked through the tunnel. It is approx. 1 mile long. We waited until a northbound train went through and then proceeded to hike through the tunnel. After we reached the north end and about the time we climbed to the trail above it, a southbound train started through. One time was enough for me.

    Your comparison is incorrect, it very much depends on the quality of the phone's camera, you should have indicated which phone you used. If you use an iPhone or Samsung S 20 series or higher then you will get much better quality photos. If you use a cheap cell phone then obviously you will get lower quality images compared to a professional scanner. What's more, the scanners work very slowly, you need a lot of patience to work with them. Besides, your idea of making a comparison between a scanner and an app is very good.

    I own the same Yashica FX-D quartz, switched to black and white film from colour just a month ago and the results are impressive. The downside of the camera is that the battery compartment is plastic and very fragile should have been metal just like the rest of the camera body, mine has started wearing out, the camera doesn't work without two LR44 battery which is a shame. Its got red LED light meter inside. Other than that its an excellent camera.

    I strongly suspect your digital kit has better & more expensive glass than your film, based on the sharpness discrepancy. My two cents: If there’s *any* use case that justifies the expensive & trouble of film, it would be portraiture, which you don’t show. That said, there are obviously editing pre-sets that are designed to make digital shots look like film, and so I’m not convinced that even with the best film glass, that film’s extra costs can justified.

    Nice video. Sth to consider when buying a fisheye is the size of the sensor of the camera. I started doing skateboarding photography back in 2009, and by this time I had been skating for 10+ years. The camera I started shooting with was a Canon Rebel 2000, it's a camera that uses 35mm film. Obviously, I had to buy a fisheye lens for it. I found one in a local camera store and it was on sale, so I bought, a brand new Canon 15mm f2.8 fisheye lens. I was really hyped with this lens! Eventually, I moved to digital due to the cost of using film. The camera I could buy was a Canon 40D, a nice midrange camera with an APS-C sensor, but back in the day, I didn't know anything about sensor sizes and no one told me anything about it either, so when I mounted the 15 mm fisheye on the digital camera, I immediately noticed the field of view was not the same I got from my 35 mm camera, and didn't know why. Then, I found out that to have the same field of view I had on my 35mm camera, I should have bought a different camera, one with a full-frame sensor, which was out of my league. Therefore, I ended up selling the 15 mm so I could buy a Rokinon 8mm f3.5 fisheye. Eventually, that 40D broke down, bought a 7D mark II. The 7D mark II broke down recently. Now, I have a 5D mark II, and I'm now selling the Rokinon 8mm fisheye to buy, the now classic, Canon 15mm fisheye again LOL. You can check what I do in photography here instagram.com/collado.photo/?next=%2F

    Great video, I was curious if you could provide some details on what it was like to get to the camping spot? I noticed you had coolers which made me think that maybe it's not too difficult to find a camp spot like yours? How far from the car was your spot? Would I be good to pull along a big wheeled wagon with extra supplies?

    • @chrisdunn3241

      This spot is fantastic but I won’t lie it’s not much of a breeze packing a bunch of stuff up. It’s not too crazy of hike but it is if you’re carrying heavy items up it.

    If you imagine yourself to be a serious photographer you'll probably feel the need to master the use of film and also digital photography. If you come realize that you really just enjoy photography and don't care about labels you may come realize that digital is just a heck of lot easier to shoot and get acceptable results. Artistic talent is not limited to older technology.

    Yo! Couple things I'm observing from starting to watch this video. Perhaps you figured them out later, but for others reading if nothing else. First is the lens wobble you're talking about. I'm quite sure that's because you have the Steadyshot turned on. It's trying to correct the camera shake but it's designed for the whole image to be in frame, not the small lens circle of the fisheye, which is why you see it moving around so much. Turn off the Steadyshot to fix it. The second is that I don't think you're getting the most quality out of the footage, it seems like a poor deinterlacing method is being used that's only keeping one field rather than interpolating. That's why everything has very jaggy edges. That isn't actually normal. I recommend using a more sophisticated deinterlacing method in your editing software, or process the footage before editing.

  • @gerhardbotha7336
    @gerhardbotha7336 5 місяців тому

    You can process digital to look exactly like film if you want to. There is nothing magic about film. Film has a dynamic range of about 9 stops but the response to light is not linear. On most things we are able to view it on, we can only observe about 5 to 7 stops. Film has a natural nice way to compress this. That is the film look. Use filmic in Darktable or Rawtherapee etc to process digital the same way. Most sensors easily do 9 to 14 stops of dynamic range now. The fact that you can look at a so called film image on a monitor and tell it is film should already be proof that a film look can be represented in a digital file.

    • @Brando90198

    I think one needs to add as far as the Kodak. Scanner goes, it's not the scanner. Your camera is actually just taking a picture of the negative. So one would assume the picture of the negative is going to be dictated on how good of camera in your phone is.

    I think you used the same diafragma, while the 35mm is much bigger then the sensor what makes the depth field different. For true comparison you need to compensate the diafragma so it has the same depth field.
