Louis Spohr: Symphony No.1 Op.20, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
Louis Spohr - Symphony No.1 Op. 20, in E Flat Major, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Howard Griffiths (conductor)
I. Adagio - Allegro - 00:00
II. Larghetto con moto - 11:52
III. Scherzo: Allegro - 16:33
IV. Finale: Allegretto - 24:05
Louis Spohr (5 April 1784 - 22 October 1859), baptized Ludewig Spohr (his family called him by the name of Luis), later often in the modern German form of the name Ludwig, was a German composer, violinist and conductor.
Spohr received his first violin from his father in 1789, and - with no instruction at first - he attempted to play the melodies he heard. Eventually, he began taking his first lessons with Johann Andreas Riemenschneider, the principal of the school in Seseen, and Spohr soon began to take part in evening musical activities with the Spohr.
When he came of age, Spohr went to Brunswick, where he took violin lessons with Kammermusicus Gottfried Kunisch (1764- 1808). He also studied music theory with the organist Karl Augustus Hartung (1733-1800) - the only formal theory training Spohr ever received.
In 1805, Spohr obtained a position as concertmaster at the court of Gotha, where he stayed until 1812. Spohr later worked as conductor at the Theater an der Wien (1813-1815), where he was on friendly terms with Beethoven; subsequently he was opera director at Frankfurt (1817-1819). Spohr's longest period of employment, from 1822 until his death in Kassel, was as the director of music at the recently succeeded William II, Elector of Hesse's court of Kassel, a position offered him on the suggestion of Carl Maria von Weber.
In 1857 he was pensioned off, much against his own wish, and in the winter of the same year he broke his arm, an accident which put an end to his violin playing.
“As a composer, Spohr produced more than 150 works with opus numbers, in addition to a number of nearly 140 works without such numbers. He wrote music in all genres. His nine symphonies (a tenth was completed, but withdrawn). Between 1803 and 1844 Spohr wrote more violin concertos than any other composer of the time, eighteen in all, including works left unpublished at his death. There are two double-violin concertos, four clarinet concertos, 36 string quartets, as well as four double quartets for two string quartets. He also wrote an assortment of other quartets, duos, trios, quintets and sextets, an octet and a nonet, works for solo violin and for solo harp, and works for violin and harp.
Between 1820 and 1835, Spohr’s works were viewed by many as perfect representations of modern art. Widely admired and famous during his lifetime, Spohr’s works were ranked among the masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, Weber, Haydn, and Beethoven. In most of his compositions, Spohr followed the traditional ‘rules,’ of harmony, although occasionally he would ‘break’ them in order to achieve musical expression. “Also characteristic of his music is its thorough craftsmanship” (Weyer 1980). His music contained the qualities of sensitivity and sorrow, as well as “an aversion to popular effects” (ibid.). His emotional compositions could bring the listener into a state of great ecstasy or stimulate tears (Ciliberti 2001).” (by Stephanie Lynnette Vogler San Marcos, Texas)
“Spohr attempted his first symphony in 1811 at the suggestion of Georg Friedrich Bischoff (Symphony No. 1 in E flat major, Op. 20), and as Clive Brown and others have noted (including the present liner-note writer, Bert Hagels) the composer used Mozart's Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K543, as something of a model. The general outlines of Spohr's movements, such as their time signatures and sentiments, can be traced to Mozart's 1788 work. Yet far from being a slavish imitator, Spohr in fact infuses Mozartean forms and themes with his own formidable contrapuntal and thematic designs, a procedure characterized by the late Charles Rosen as 'classicizing'; such works were 'based on the exterior models, the results of the classical impulse, and not upon the impulse itself'” (from an article published online by Cambridge University Press)

For several moments I thought that this was Beethoven. Completely enjoyable. And the pianist: Christopher Hinterhuber has made numerous recordings with Naxos and Kalrec, performing works by Haydn, Ferdinand Ries, Schubert, and Zemlinsky. His recording of works by Johann Nepomuk Hummel earned the Editor's Choice award from Gramophone magazine in 2008. Currently, he teaches piano at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and gives masterclasses in Japan, Europe, and South America.
Thank you, I totally agree with you! Christopher Hinterhuber is a great pianist, he has an extraordinary career as a performer and as a piano teacher. His wonderful recordings of Ries' music made me love this composer who became my favorite.
ROBERTRO FOI UM GRANDE AMIGO, ESTIVE NESSE CONCERTO NOS ANOS 70, E TAMBÉM OUVI AS 32 SONATAS DE BEETHOVEN COM ELE, SAUDADES !
Yes, I agree with you. He was a great pianist who had an international performing career. R.I.P.
Lupu's "rain drop" impromptu is so real that ypu can even feel the water in your hands!
I like your comment, thank you!
Radu Lupu was one of finest lied pianists. Now he is playing in the heaven! Peace to his soul❤
Magnifique musique
Thank you!
This is lovely playing by the soloist with excellent pace, technique and feeling, and the Luxemburg orchestra really brings out many fine details of Joachim's masterful orchestration. HOWEVER, the recording is also something of an abomination as several sections of the first movement are cut out, including almost the entire orchestral exposition, a chunk of the development, part of the bridge in the recap - thankfully they didn't edit the amazing cadenza - as well as a few sections of the finale. It's disrespectful and a damned shame... if not for the butchering of Joachim's symphonic conception of the concerto, it might be my favourite take of this opus magnum (at least for the first and second movements). For excellent complete recordings of it, you can listen to Rachel Barton Pine or Christian Tetzlaff.
Cómo se puede tener tanto sentimiento? Casi hace llorar. Lupu: magistral!
It reminds me of the great movie "The King Dances":) Thanks for this great recording.
Thank you too!
Thank you for still following my UA-cam channel!

Overwhelming
Thanks!
Love this and the other Scharwenka piano concertos. Thanks for posting! IMO, Ms.Tanyel is more careful with the pedal than in the other recording of this piece.
Thanks too! I'm glad you appreciate Scharwenka concertos and SetaTanyel's performance.
Thanks too! I'm glad you appreciate Scharwenka concertos and SetaTanyel's performance.
I agree with you, thanks for comment!
Grazie Sibarit!
Thank you for your comment and appreciation of Herold's music. You are right, he was a very talented composer, but his beautiful and moving piano concertos are unfortunately so little known today!
This is a Viola Audition standard. Wolfram had a fair amount to do with Australia. I remember he was working at a National Music Camp in Australia I think it was about 1987. He was a viola hero of mine when I was studying Viola at the Victorian College of the Arts. I went to hear his concerts with the MSO and later with a group of soloists from the Berlin Philharmonic playing at the Melbourne Concert Hall. He married an Australian woman I believe. I also studied Viola with one of his students Jane Hazelwood.
Thank you! I'm very happy when a music expert gives us such interesting information. Thanks again!
All of Ries' concertos (and also the symphonies and al the other works of him) are well worth listening to. It is a great pity that they are almost never heard in concert and that most pianists of our time ignore these marvellous concertos. They would be a huge enrichment to concerto programmes. Thank you so much for posting this.
Thank you too! Ries is my favorite composer and I always listen to any of his works with great pleasure. That's why I'm glad you appreciate his music.
Thanks for upload his piano concerto, i discovered Godard a few days ago, and i was shocked by his violin concerto no.2, one of the best violin concertos i ever heard in my life, and this piano concerto also its very beautiful. Greetings from an Argentinian living in Spain
I love how he bring back the first theme of the first movement in the end of his concerto, like moszkowski did in his concerto no.2 op.59. I love this resource in a concerto or a symphony, bring back a lovely theme and make it more triumphal in the end feels like heaven.
Thank you very much for this comment, I'm very glad you like Godard's concertos!
È la gioia di vivere in musica. Sublime.
Thank you for this nice comment!
Piękne utwory kompozytora o którym do dzisiaj nie słyszałem.

I appreciate your comment! Thank you too!
Nice comment, thank you!
Sterkl lacks the vicissitude of a Concerto say of the make of Boulogne. It is in the baroque tradition of course. Does not impress much.

Extraordinary. Excellently performed. Pleyel was able to write such a - brilliant symphony- at the age of 21 because he first learned the craft from Jana Křtitele Vaňhala. J.Hayd himself owes a lot to Vanhal (it keeps getting obscured). The influence of Christoph Willibald Gluck is also heard.
Thank you very much!
Superbe musique, merci
Thank you too!
Magnifique musique, merci
Thanks for listening!
I heard the third movement of this for the first time today, on WETA, my local classical music station. I was surprised by the high notes throughout the movement, especially the A7s.
Strange, why it's titled like 'C Minor'? Only introduction in C minor, rest of mov 1, mov 3, mov 4 in C major
I already wrote about this fact quoting Dr Allan Badley, the signer of the album notes (please see the description below the video)
Nice comment! Thank you too!
Thank you for listening and appreciating!
Thank you, I'm glad you like Ries' music, he's my favorite composer. And yes, you're right, the attitude of great instrumentalists towards the music of lesser-known or unjustly forgotten composers is unfair.
Thank you! I'm always glad when a classical music lover searches UA-cam to learn about unknown or unfairly forgotten composers and listens to their music.
Bravo thes concert is also beautiful.
Like Kraus one of the great unknown
Viola is always so sweet, but especially in this lovely concerto!❤
Thanks for listening and comment!
C'est le plus magnifique.

A famous work by the great composer Antonio Salieri is marginalized by the genius Mozart who took everything. Unfortunately that was it
