King of Colosseum is a wrestling HIDDEN GEM.
Переглядів 11 тис.3 місяці тому
The early 2000s. Worldwide, wrestling is in a crazy place. Japanese wrestling (puroresu) is imploding. Companies have to team up. And the major promotions have scared off enough major main eventers to create competing promotions. Amidst a backdrop of chaos, King of Colosseum (released as two discs - a Red disc in 2002 and a Green disc in 2003) is Spike's attempt at a wrestling game for the new ...
SmackDown vs RAW was a DISAPPOINTMENT.

In 2003, one of the greatest periods in WWE was taking place, and one of the greatest wrestling games ever was released late that year - WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. But nothing lasts forever, and 2004 saw WWE in a really bad place. With that going on, Yuke's shifted the SmackDown series, rebranding it as SmackDown vs RAW and beginning to move towards a more realistic simulation of wrest...

In the 1980s, Nintendo had a lot of success with a new series called THE LEGEND OF ZELDA. With two drastically different titles on the NES, they had a new cash cow, and with the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, it was time for a new Zelda to use the new hardware. The result: one of the most highly acclaimed and beloved games ever. But as an outsider to the series, I w...

In 1994, Squaresoft released a beloved cult classic JRPG called Live a Live. While it never officially left Japan, it unofficially found its way here and developed a reputation through fan translations. I love both of them so much but that was a real highlight of SYM. As great as HCTP is, it has a lot of variety and replay value but the season is only ever one year at a time. It's cool that SYM kept it going for 2 years with cool storylines and stuff. I gotta replay SYM sometime, what a great game.

      @HereComesTheGame 9 днів тому

      I could see that if you want a SVR that's like HCTP, but I just couldn't look past it basically being a strictly worse HCTP. Other than the graphics looking really great, making the Legends fit in better with the current roster with better entrances and theme music, and having a great licensed soundtrack, it's a disappointment. Being a poor man's HCTP killed it for me. I guess if you don't like the direction the later games went in, I can see the appeal though. I'm looking forward to revisiting the rest of the series for reviews eventually. Gonna be fun since I haven't played these since I played them as a kid.

    Yes, you just had to be there. I played GTA3 on PC but I ended up buying a PS2 just for Vice City because I was so hungry for more and the PS2 version came out first. The hype was real and organic. GTA3 felt so fresh when it came out, like the ultimate playground, and I wanted another hit. The inclusion of helicopters and motorcycles was amazing, with some of the best handling helicopters I'd played until then. The Sanchez motorcycle was my go-to and make transversing the map much less painful than a car. Saying that, the mechanics seemed clunky even then. It wasn't the best control scheme, and the lock-on always felt cheap to me, especially after playing GTA3 with a mouse/keyboard. Many of the mission fails were down to controls and camera. I've actually just finished playing the Definitive Versions of III and VC on PC with controller and the added modern touches have improved gameplay somewhat, with most of the original vibes being retained. Of course, purists would disagree. The story line is ok. It ties together well the different fun activities. To me, it's hard to reconcile likeable or relatable characters with the barbaric acts occurring on screen, so I can never take these plots seriously. San Andreas is probably the upgrade from GTA3 you'd expect. The first time I climbed up and over a wall, I was stunned. Maxing out your cycling stats and cruising around the city on a BMX was, and still is, amazing, and the OP bunnyhops makes it the preferred method in many situations.

    At the time it was amazing. I used to steal a car, drive around and then park up and watch the sun come up while listening to one of the amazing radio stations. Even now when I hear Summer Madness or Wow I'm transported back to Vice City. Couple that with the fact that my teenage years were in the 80s so there was a huge nostalgia trip for me too, and there really was nothing else like it, or anything to touch it. Of course then came San Andreas, for me the pinnacle of the GTA series. But VC will always have a place in my heart.

    You know growing up in the PS2 original Xbox GameCube. Kind of mad that a lot of these companies from Japan could’ve made a lot more money if they made all their games region, free ridiculous that they have these hidden gems that it could’ve made gangbuster money in the United States. this game is a perfect example.

    • @HereComesTheGame
      @HereComesTheGame 2 місяці тому

      I'm not sure they would have made much money from that honestly. Maybe from importers buying the games directly from them in Japan to export to Western buyers, but I'd imagine importing was a lot tougher in the PS2 era. I remember reading an article from 2005 reviewing King of Colosseum 2 and they said it cost around $80 to buy from import sites at the time. Plus I wonder if Americans would line up in droves for those games. Most Americans in 2005 probably didn't know about Initial D, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or Mitsuharu Misawa. Importing was even more niche at the time. Although at that point I almost wonder why they'd region lock the games since almost nobody actually could import them back then...

    I grew up with Zelda 2 as one of my favorite games, and while it's not my favorite in the franchise, I still love it way more than a lot of the newer ones. People like to act like it's such a detraction from the series without understanding that there was no "Zelda formula" at that point. It wasn't until LttP that most of the things that "make a Zelda game" really started being made a concrete part of the design. Many of those same people would probably also ignore the fact that BofW and TotK break that formula far more than Zelda 2 does. All of that said, it still has one of the best Zelda soundtracks, with songs that are far more memorable than the pieces from a lot of the other games. A lot of the abilities from this game also became staples for Link, especially in regards to how he handles in the SSB series.

    This game promised a lot at the time, if they weren't going to include Brock Lesnar or Goldberg they should have at least included the following: Divas: - Lita - Dawn Marie - Nidia - Jacqueline - Jackie Gayda - Jazz - Gail Kim Wrestlers: - Test - William Regal - Goldust - Val Venis - Mark Henry - Matt Morgan - Rikishi - Orlando Jordan - Lance Storm - Billy Gunn Tag Team/Factions: - La Rèsistance (Rob Conway & Sylvain Grenier) - The Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny) - FBI (Nunzio & Stamboli) - Kyo Dai (Akio & Sakoda) - S.H.I.T (The Hurricane & Rosey) Cruiserweight Division: - Billy Kidman - Jamie Noble - Shannon Moore - Ultimo Dragon - Paul London - Brian Kendrick - Funaki Done, they had a good list of wrestlers there that would have made the game much better but they didn't take advantage of it, and it's a shame because the roster from 2003 and early 2004 is one of my favorites.

    I liked KoC2 a lot better, but yeah. Its my favorite wrestling game by far.. i spent so many hours unlocking everything in this game You could unlock wrestler templates, like inoki, giant baba etc.. which you then had to go into CAW mode, and "create" them.. thats how they could get away with licensing, but it was made pretty easy so you just had to "load" the template. save as new wrestler (usually took the opportunity to change the name and his signature and special move to english). A lot of people find the gameplay weird, but once you get used to it its so much fun. It has a really addictive % rating, and different crowds, arenas etc.. I used to love trying to get 100% (five star) matches

    The OG SmackDown vs Raw game was really good, the problem was it was coming after HCTP. And the roster wasn’t as good as HCTP, so you didn’t have Lesnar, Goldberg, Ultimo Dragon, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, and Steve Austin (who surprisingly wasn’t in the game). That’s why it might feel a little disappointing because it was coming after HCTP, which is considered one of, if not the best WWE game ever made.

But I very much generalized, and there's tons of fascinating stuff going on in wrestling in 1997.
