King of Colosseum is a wrestling HIDDEN GEM.
The early 2000s. Worldwide, wrestling is in a crazy place. Japanese wrestling (puroresu) is imploding. Companies have to team up. And the major promotions have scared off enough major main eventers to create competing promotions.
Amidst a backdrop of chaos, King of Colosseum (released as two discs - a Red disc in 2002 and a Green disc in 2003) is Spike's attempt at a wrestling game for the new era.
With a varied roster featuring current stars and legends from ALL JAPAN PRO WRESTLING, NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING, PRO WRESTLING NOAH, PRO WRESTLING NOAH and even fighters from the MMA promotion of PANCRASE, does King of Colosseum deliver? Is it worthy to be called a King of the wrestling genre? Or is it just a royal embarrassment? FIND OUT NOW.

SmackDown vs RAW was a DISAPPOINTMENT.

In 2003, one of the greatest periods in WWE was taking place, and one of the greatest wrestling games ever was released late that year - WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain. But nothing lasts forever, and 2004 saw WWE in a really bad place. In the 1980s, Nintendo had a lot of success with a new series called THE LEGEND OF ZELDA. With two drastically different titles on the NES, they had a new cash cow, and with the release of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, it was time for a new Zelda to use the new hardware. You know growing up in the PS2 original Xbox GameCube. Kind of mad that a lot of these companies from Japan could’ve made a lot more money if they made all their games region, free ridiculous that they have these hidden gems that it could’ve made gangbuster money in the United States. this game is a perfect example.

    • @HereComesTheGame
      @HereComesTheGame 4 дні тому

I'm not sure they would have made much money from that honestly. Maybe from importers buying the games directly from them in Japan to export to Western buyers, but I'd imagine importing was a lot tougher in the PS2 era. I remember reading an article from 2005 reviewing King of Colosseum 2 and they said it cost around $80 to buy from import sites at the time. Plus I wonder if Americans would line up in droves for those games. Most Americans in 2005 probably didn't know about Initial D, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure or Mitsuharu Misawa. Importing was even more niche at the time. Although at that point I almost wonder why they'd region lock the games since almost nobody actually could import them back then...

I grew up with Zelda 2 as one of my favorite games, and while it's not my favorite in the franchise, I still love it way more than a lot of the newer ones. People like to act like it's such a detraction from the series without understanding that there was no "Zelda formula" at that point. It wasn't until LttP that most of the things that "make a Zelda game" really started being made a concrete part of the design. Many of those same people would probably also ignore the fact that BofW and TotK break that formula far more than Zelda 2 does. All of that said, it still has one of the best Zelda soundtracks, with songs that are far more memorable than the pieces from a lot of the other games. A lot of the abilities from this game also became staples for Link, especially in regards to how he handles in the SSB series.

This game promised a lot at the time, if they weren't going to include Brock Lesnar or Goldberg they should have at least included the following: Divas: - Lita - Dawn Marie - Nidia - Jacqueline - Jackie Gayda - Jazz - Gail Kim Wrestlers: - Test - William Regal - Goldust - Val Venis - Mark Henry - Matt Morgan - Rikishi - Orlando Jordan - Lance Storm - Billy Gunn Tag Team/Factions: - La Rèsistance (Rob Conway & Sylvain Grenier) - The Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny) - FBI (Nunzio & Stamboli) - Kyo Dai (Akio & Sakoda) - S.H.I.T (The Hurricane & Rosey) Cruiserweight Division: - Billy Kidman - Jamie Noble - Shannon Moore - Ultimo Dragon - Paul London - Brian Kendrick - Funaki Done, they had a good list of wrestlers there that would have made the game much better but they didn't take advantage of it, and it's a shame because the roster from 2003 and early 2004 is one of my favorites.

I liked KoC2 a lot better, but yeah. Its my favorite wrestling game by far.. i spent so many hours unlocking everything in this game You could unlock wrestler templates, like inoki, giant baba etc.. which you then had to go into CAW mode, and "create" them.. thats how they could get away with licensing, but it was made pretty easy so you just had to "load" the template. save as new wrestler (usually took the opportunity to change the name and his signature and special move to english). A lot of people find the gameplay weird, but once you get used to it its so much fun. It has a really addictive % rating, and different crowds, arenas etc.. I used to love trying to get 100% (five star) matches

The OG SmackDown vs Raw game was really good, the problem was it was coming after HCTP. And the roster wasn’t as good as HCTP, so you didn’t have Lesnar, Goldberg, Ultimo Dragon, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, and Steve Austin (who surprisingly wasn’t in the game). That’s why it might feel a little disappointing because it was coming after HCTP, which is considered one of, if not the best WWE game ever made.

I will admit I think Survival Road (KOC2 single player) isn't as neat as Trial Road (KOC1 - who doesn't love stern, disappointed Misawa staring into your soul like a disappointed dad when you lose?) and the load times are noticeably worse, but otherwise everything I'm missing from KOC 1 can be made in KOC 2. I got over not having my All Japan legends by creating them and then some. It might not be Stan Hansen, but "Star Bison" is good enough for me. Also, I love the goofy ripoffs of theme songs they don't have the rights to, like Galaxy Express (NWA title theme from All Japan), J or Inoki Bombaye (or whatever Inoki's song is called).

Played the original on a modded PS2, kind of got talked into buying Final Fantasy Online, and while I didn't play that game much, the Hard Drive that was included in the bundle was used to combine the two King of Colosseum discs. Definitely a fun time, but once I got KoC II, I spent a lot more time playing that game. More modes, more features, and you don't have to combine two discs. IMO KoC II is the best PS2 wrestling game, although others have said, if you can get around the amount of text, Wrestle Kingdom 2 is better, but I'm still more into KoC II.

I preferred KOC1 over KOC2. My one complaint about KOC2 is that the wrestlers seemed to get smaller and the ring got bigger. Idk why but that was just an eyesore for me. Wrestle Kingdom 1 had Brock Lesnar and Jamal (Umaga) R.I.P which I loved and the gameplay was great. Same goes for WK2 minus Brock and Jamal. Plus, WK2 excluded NOAH I believe, which sucked. Overall, I think WK2's roster was better, I loved the new wrestlers who came into the game and Legends like Hayabusa, Vader, Terry Funk and Terry Bam Bam Gordy (all R.I.P sadly). If you haven't played it yet, try All Star Pro-Wrestling 3.

I love this game and put some many hours into it back in the day. Still occasionally play it with a friend every now and then and relive old memories. But everything you said is 100% valid and I agree with every point you made. A poor man's HCTP is the best way to describe it. HCTP is the GOAT to me and SVR just had so much less than what came before it.

Great wrestling game but No Mercy is still better the gameplay was more realistic

I won't disagree with anyone who thinks this. I got HCTP as my #1 and No Mercy as a CLOSE #2.

@PontFlair yeah for me there both the best ones ever made No Mercy & Here Comes The Pain no other game comes close to these 2. These are the only 2 I replay constantly

@@Mike-t5r9q there are some honorable mentions, but these are the 2. They're the best. I'd say Revenge possibly. I'd even throw Def Jam Vendetta in there bc I believe that's an underrated Pro-Wrestling video game. Smackdown SYM maybe. I love certain Japanese Pro-Wres games although they lack in match types. Idk if it's noticeable, but I don't have my Pro-Wrestling video game Mount Rushmore together yet LOL

If you watched wrestling back then, and didn't own or never played this game between 2004 and 2005, *you missed out big time* . I was 5 when the game came out. Before PS3 and PS4, besides FIFA and GTA San Andreas, SvR was a MUST HAVE video game. I remember so many people borrowing the game off their friends or neighbours. Some people even copied the game disc onto a new cd, rather thsn actually buying the (new) game at the store. The last time I played it was in 2019. The roster was underwhelming for sure, but it was not a disappointment. No way

I have nostalgia for it as well as the soundtrack but it was pretty terrible. The expiring contracts and firings are a big reason for the poor roster. Lesnar and I believe Mick Foley were in the beta but got removed. Goldberg, Steiner and Test would have likely been planned (the latter influencing the Diva storylines) as well and Goldberg being a huge part of HCTP so his absence was definitely felt. Steve Austin not being in is still baffling to this day. I don't know why they didn't include The Rock's modern/WM20 look as an alternative but perhaps his schedule didn't allow for it. This game had one of the worst create a wrestler modes. Everything you made just looked like a cartoon no matter how much you tweaked it and it dampened any hope of filling in the roster gaps. Season mode having voiceover was spoiled by the fact that they had awful voice direction. Nobody talked like they did on television and they all sounded like they were reading a script. The dialogue and story choices were cut down as a result. The create a belt and heel/face systems were welcome additions but poorly executed. The belts weren't worth grinding for and felt like a rehash of the Gamecube's WMx8 feature which was equally as poor. I did miss this game's lighting and menus though. SVR06 was a return to form in some ways (better roster, season and GM mode) but had a less appealing presentation than this game.

The only people that trash this game are the same low skilled people that didn't have the grit to beat it back in that day. They whined then. They're still whining to this day.
