- In this video I cover several early Game Boy games, including the first ever Mario game on the system: Super Mario Land.
footage recorded from Game Boy cartridges played on the Retron 5.

One thing you forgot to mention about Gameboy that made it so good: the speaker and the sound quality! That made the experience amazing! Everytime I play Super Mario Land or other games or just watch gameplay I cannot stop think about that great audio!
Sub for the subtle use of the No Mercy soundtrack in the background. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words! You can't go wrong with N64 wrestling game music.
I got this game Christmas of 1989 with my Gameboy. I loved it, I'd read the manual to look at the artwork. I remember one winter Saturday evening being tethered to the wall with my Gameboy trying to beat this game. I got to the Asian level and got frustrated 😆 my dad was home watching boxing and my mom and brother were out.
Although I don't agree with your opinions on SMB2 and Tetris as they are both favorites of mine, I found this video to be fun. Loved the random wrestling game tunes sprinkled throughout. Thank you, nice work.
First like! GL with the channel.
Thanks! Should be a lot of fun!
Super Mario Land had the best video game music from that era
SML had some fantastic music but when I think of the 8bit era personally I think Final Fantasy, Zelda 1 and 2, the Castlevania trilogy and so on...8bit games had a ton of great music!
In regard to SMB2’s limited continues, if you want an 8-bit version with unlimited continues try Doki Doki Panic, the Famicom Disk System game that was converted into SMB2 on the NES. Not only does it have unlimited continues, it also saves your progress to the disk.
Maybe one day I'll try Doki Doki Panic. I've never played any of the FDS versions although I do like games that were on it like Castlevania II and Zelda II.
Fun fact about Breakout: made by the Apple co-founders Steve Jobs & Steve! And a few more guys.
Oh I see that I forgot to comment that it's Steve Wozniak! Aka "Woz"! :)
Steve Jobs famously negotiated the contracted and told Wozniak they were getting paid half as much as Atari had agreed to and pocketed the rest. They then used stolen parts from Atari in the construction of early Apple I computers to save money.
I wouldn't say that Gameboy Tetris was an especially good port, so I'd say "skip it." It's really only worthwhile to play the exclusives.
Baseball! I would say if you're in USA you probably know how to play and how to get points. But if you're in Europe you probably don't know, so that game might be hard to appreciate for (most) european gamers.
Definitely a game targeted at the U.S. and Japan.
Kid Icarus music? it's jarring
Buuuuut, ITS IN JAPANESE!
I wasn't a big fan of Tetris either and prefers Dr. Mario over it as well. Think it's overrated, a bit too simple and monotonous. You just drop down blocks and clear lines, not much varation really.
