CORRECTION: Slobber knocker mode is also in SmackDown vs RAW 2006. I screwed up when I said this was the last appearance of the mode. Sorry everyone. Also, there's 6 women on the roster, not 5. I forgot Stacy Kiebler even though there's footage of her in the video! Counting is hard.
I'm happy you enjoyed the video! I might be a little bit more critical of this game than I was when I played it as a kid, but I'll always cherish having gotten to enjoy it as a kid.
This game is awful. They focused too much 'pervy' sex appeal. Season mode and even the selection screen was a clear example of what I'm talking about. I sold this game and bought back HCTP.
SvR was basically a HCTP but with less features. The season mode was a huge downgrade, the roster sucked (which it really did at the time post WM XX which we can't really fault the game for) and we lost the ability to go backstage during a match at anytime. At least the visuals were a massive improvement and it had a killer OST.
When I was a kid, I thought it was great, but looking back at it now I think Here Comes The Pain was better in every way other than the soundtrack and graphics. I enjoy the game, but in my book it's an underwhelming follow-up to a masterpiece and an incomplete rough draft of the new style of SVR.
It’s weird just how SVR was sandwiched in-between some of the greatest wrestling games of all time. It’s the awkward middle child during the golden age of wrestling games. Still good but not legendary like the others.
This is a strange game because after the success of HCTP it seemed a no brainer this would be just as great, but they clearly wanted to transition to a more realistic game while using the same engine which meant it's just a slower HCTP with worse AI, removed winning animations for some reason and half finished commentary. I still enjoy it for nostalgia but it reminds me of JBI as a transitional hybrid rather than full fledged sequel.
Surprised all these comments are disagreeing. I put this in my que a week ago and finally got around to watching it. I think your opinion sums about a lot of peoples opinions on this game back in 2004. The lack of roster and the season mode coming off of HCTP was everyones biggest gripe
It seems like it's either people taking my silly review like I destroyed their childhood (even though I said it's also my childhood, LOL) or people having such poor media literacy that they're mad about me saying stuff I didn't say. For some reason a lot of people think I'm bashing the series as a whole when I established in less than 35 seconds that I'm just discussing the very first SVR.
Yeah it's so odd that they cut winning animations outside of specific modes like the Elimination Chamber. SmackDown 1 had victory animations all the way back in 2000! Why doesn't this game have that?
Agreed. SVR is sandwiched between two of the best wrestling games ever made - HCTP and SVR 06. It does nothing that those games don't do better, the CAW mode is frankly embarrassing and the Season is horrendous with it's cringe diva storylines. The only good thing the game does is Challenge mode, and 06 and 07 do that better. Plus the roster is miniscule with tons of omissions for no reason (where the hell is Lita, the Bashams, Greg Valentine, Lance Storm, Val Venis, Gail Kim, Hurricane, Regal, Test, Al Snow, Dawn Marie, Jazz, Nidia, Jamie Noble, Billy Kidman, Jacqueline, Mark Henry, Shannon Moore, Stevie Richards, Eugene, Funaki, Akio, Ivory, Kenzo Suzuki, Maven, Miss Jackie, Paul London, Orlando Jordan, the FBI, La Resistance, Rodney Mack, 3 Minute Warning, Simon Dean, Spike Dudley and Tyson Tomko?) There are almost as many people not in the game than there is on the roster itself. Heck, I bet JBL was a literal last minute addition.
Yeah that roster is awkward. Speaking of JBL, Day of Reckoning 1 on the GameCube is even worse about it. Even though JBL had risen to the top and become WWE Champion by the time the game released, the game doesn't include him. Not even APA Bradshaw. That's a crazy omission.
anyone who played hctp season mode or sym will know just how much of a downgrade it is here, caws were also horrible and cartoony here and would be much better in 06.
It was such a disappointment coming off of Here Comes the Pain; that I skipped the next title (06) came back to the series for '07 at-least; but didn't realize how much of a classic I was missing out on w/'06 for years! (Nowadays '06 is all I have time for [no mercy, shut your mouth, hctp, 06, & wm19 been the favorites in my top5 rotation of late. (going back to the vintage timeless classics)]
I was such a mark for the OG Smackdown games in the series. I was so disappointed in the first SvR that I skipped SvR06 and bought Day of Reckoning 2 in November of 2005 as I'd just gotten a GameCube earlier in the year. Thankfully my brother bought SvR06 a few months later anyway and I ended up really enjoying it.
@@Bubba__Sawyer bro that 06 roster is 🤯 (Bret Hart/HBK/Andre Giant/Hogan/Rock/Stone Cold/RVD/Kurt Angle/Big Show/Y2J/Cena/Eddie/Mysterio/Benoit/Masked Kane/Shelton/Batista/Orton etc.³ + being able to edit the moves to the accuracy of your liking (tons of options), custom entrances if the player choses; GM Mode w/the above mentioned roster [🤯] (U could change the wwe title in GM mode from the spinner title to undisputed title design {& back nd forth if the player choses mid GM mode on the same save} (the exhibition mode's 'title mode, how it saves the title holders & records; ppv mode (when titles on the line it updates your title mode title holders as-well) Just 1 of the ultimate experiences playing a wrestling game. Perfect blend of realism & fun. I didnt like the first svr. However come 2006 and i ended up enjoying it Better, truthfully the first svr felt like A Step Backwards. eliminateing what made the previous Games better was kind of a mistake
@Bubba__Sawyer SVR was the first game I played since JBI. I really like the brand warfare idea of this game and the added realism to the gameplay that they improved upon in the next couple of entries on top of things like the ECW brand in future games.
i remember having horrible experiences with online. So many sore losers quitting as soon as they were about to lose. And then going "Oh, sorry, i had to go to the toilet" when asked
Very true. I admit that following how great the SmackDown series was meant that this game was fighting an uphill battle from the start. I mostly just wish that this game hadn't regressed as much as it did from HCTP. This ended up being a downgrade IMO
Smackdown VS Raw is a rushed, buggy game, not wholly terrible but weaker in every way compared to HCTP. I was particularly shocked at how ugly CAWs looked and how restrictive were each grapple categories. SvR 2006 however, is in many ways a better wrestling sim. I don't see it talked about much but, roster aside, it may be the best version of the gameplay standard set by HCTP (also, the closest alternative to No Mercy). After that they started being "experimental" with gameplay, with mixed results...
Fr wwe in 2004 had a stacked roster they should have included close to least 100 guys in the game cause I was kinda hoping they would include Stone Cold,Lita,Lesnar,Goldberg,Steiner,Hurricane,Test,Funaki,Noble,Billy Gunn,Nidia,Shannon Moore
No the hell it was not. That title is straight blasphemous sir! I don't care what everyone else saying, SVR was a great game. I replayed season mode countless times, spent countless hours in exhibition. SVR and SVR 07 were the best in the series without question! I also enjoyed 2008 but I can admit it was lacking. Everyone's all like SYM did this, HCTP did that, and I'm like and? 😂😂
You probably weren't around back then when it came out. It was almost universally thought of as a vastly inferior follow-up to HCTP. Saying it was a disappointment doesn't mean he's saying it's a bad game.
Dawn Marie, Jazz, Gail Kim, Jackie Gayda and Nidia could have been added to this game. SYM and HCTP had 8 women so I don't see why Smackdown vs Raw only had 6. Sable was released 3 months before the game came out and she made the cut. Jazz Gail and Nidia were released around the time the game came out. Dawn and Jackie Gayda were there until 2005. Regardless I still like playing this game.
It's especially odd that Jackie is missing because Charlie Haas and Rico are in as a tag team and Jackie is shown in Rico's entrance video. She's mentioned by name but isn't in the game. So odd.
It really was a big step back. I don't claim to know what people thought at the time- I was a kid at the time and I loved it, but I didn't have the experience or knowledge to examine it critically and I didn't have internet to read other opinions on it - but looking back it doesn't hold up that well because it's a step backwards.
I don't watch TV these days but I heard Bound for Glory was a massive success and I'm sure their relationship with WWE has helped them grow a lot. I'm so happy that TNA is doing well. I remember dark periods like the Hogan era and the weird GFW era where they co-opted that failed brand (although that's where I first saw Eli Drake, who is now LA Knight! YEAH!). So I'm glad they're doing well.
I remember playing this game religiously as a kid, but I think the main issue was that it felt incomplete in a way. Like they could've added a lot more to it.
Disappointment wasn't big enough to describe this after here comes the pain and before 2006 to two best games in the series. The only ones defending this are Gen Z kids growing up with Cena and Edge as main eventers and never saw a wrestling as anything other than a show on after teen titans go, sorry kids your childhood wasn't as great as you thought.
your right about it failing in some areas like the season mode and crappy mini games. but with the introduction of online or having someone to play against this was pretty underrated. the technical wrestlers all have the highest stats. kurt angle, bret hart, beniot, eddie Guerrero in some areas. with that plus the enhanced reversal mechanics and the variety of moveset options. i went from 50/50 with matches to being practically unbeatable when i unlocked legend taker being 12 at the time my 30 year old uncle could not take the fact he was getting beat every single time because i had mastered the technical aspect the game pushes it was the the transition from hctp that was arcadey being able to cheese bots to svr06 where you were getting you ass handed on legend mode with them being able to reverse everything
@@HereComesTheGame Those pervy Diva storylines were pure cringe. Made me embarrassed to even play the game. I can't imagine this was cool to anyone over 12 years old.
Yeah when I go back to 2000s WWE most of the stuff with the divas makes me want to cringe. I don't have a problem with attractive ladies wrestling, but can't we have attractive ladies who kick ass and just happen to also be attractive? But then again they were still TV-14 at the time and wanted to attract the young man 18-24 demo, so I understand why they thought this was the best approach. It also makes me appreciate how revolutionary the TNA Knockouts division was (thanks, Dutch Mantell!)
Tbh i agree with this...(even though i like it) I remember when i got this when it first came out and was soo let down by the fact you couldnt go backstage in hardcore matches (apart from that one area) The games started to become less fun after that
I'm glad you enjoyed it (I did make a mistake about the Slobberknocker mode though - it was still in SVR 2006 too). I'm not sure if I'll do more. I want to see how well it does. I do have a review of Here Comes The Pain up (the audio's a bit iffy, but I think that the discussion about the game in the video is still good) and on October 31 I'm releasing a review of a Japanese exclusive wrestling game called King of Colosseum, so you might like those. Thanks so much for watching.
Glad you enjoyed it. I have a Japanese wrestling game review (King of Colosseum) later this month. I hope to squeeze in more wrestling stuff going forward.
SVR definitely was disappointing. I think the season mode definitely is a big reason why. Too restricting. You were forced into storylines and feuds where you had to be more of a babyface and they removed too many good features
Yet that's somehow not even as pitiful as what The Day of Reckoning games on GameCube got. DoR1 had 4 female wrestlers: Trish, Stacy, Victoria, and Molly Holly. DoR2 also only had 4 female wrestlers: Trish, Stacy, Torrie and Christy Hemme. The ironic thing is the GC was the more powerful console compared to the PS2, yet the rosters on those games were actually smaller than their PS2 counterparts
To be fair I'd imagine that the roster ended up smaller in the GameCube games because the discs themselves couldn't store as much as regular DVDs. For example one of the Legends of Wrestling games had interviews with a bunch of legends but they had to cut those for space on the GameCube
oh the comment section is going to cook you for this take. but still a great review that explains all of the mechanics of the game etc. please do the future SVR games like 06, 07 or 08!!
Glad you liked the video! I've been surprised to see how people have responded. A lot of agreement and a lot of disagreement. I'm planning on making more SVR reviews in the future. I have a review coming on October 31 of a Japanese wrestling game called King of Colosseum, then I hope to do more wrestling reviews next year.
I love this game and put some many hours into it back in the day. Still occasionally play it with a friend every now and then and relive old memories. But everything you said is 100% valid and I agree with every point you made. A poor man's HCTP is the best way to describe it. HCTP is the GOAT to me and SVR just had so much less than what came before it.
It's the voice acting that probably ruined Season Mode. Since voice acting limits the branching paths that you could take. No one would like to record thousands of lines for hundreds of branching paths. And due to that, that locked out Season Mode to other potential storylines. Heck, in Shut Your Mouth, your idea of just floating around and not winning any belts can happen. Granted, they won't actually show you much cutscenes and story and will just let you play matches after matches without anything happening story-wise.
My main gripe with Smackdown vs Raw is how weak the roster was. So many names that were left off the game. Other than the obvious Goldberg and Brock Lesnar, there was also no Lita, Scott Steiner, Rikishi, Gail Kim, Hurricane, Eugene, Billy Gunn, etc
For the svr games I always hated thq and wwe especially for not trying to included close to 100 guys in the game cause I stg wwe had a stacked roster from 2002-2008 and I never seen guys like Jamie Noble,Shannon Moore,Test,Funaki,Nunzio to never appeared in any game
Test was in Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes The Pain I think, but you're right that a lot of those other guys were neglected. I especially wish Nunzio was in there somewhere. In ECW when he was Little Guido I think he helped carry that company in its dying days with the FBI tag team, so it sucks that he was an afterthought in WWE.
This game promised a lot at the time, if they weren't going to include Brock Lesnar or Goldberg they should have at least included the following: Divas: - Lita - Dawn Marie - Nidia - Jacqueline - Jackie Gayda - Jazz - Gail Kim Wrestlers: - Test - William Regal - Goldust - Val Venis - Mark Henry - Matt Morgan - Rikishi - Orlando Jordan - Lance Storm - Billy Gunn Tag Team/Factions: - La Rèsistance (Rob Conway & Sylvain Grenier) - The Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny) - FBI (Nunzio & Stamboli) - Kyo Dai (Akio & Sakoda) - S.H.I.T (The Hurricane & Rosey) Cruiserweight Division: - Billy Kidman - Jamie Noble - Shannon Moore - Ultimo Dragon - Paul London - Brian Kendrick - Funaki Done, they had a good list of wrestlers there that would have made the game much better but they didn't take advantage of it, and it's a shame because the roster from 2003 and early 2004 is one of my favorites.
When you had classics like WWE shut your mouth and here comes the pain. The SVR games lacked the gameplay and roster. I was definitely disappointed when i bought it.
I thought it was just me. Not a bad game but VERY weak game overall. But 2006? They improved on everything in every way. Honestly one of the best wwe games ever.
The original SmackDown vs. Raw was a lot of fun. But yeah, going from Shut Your Mouth and Here Comes The Pain to this feels like a downgrade. I always played as the Legends, and it was great to see Kane in his old 1997-2000 attire. The menus with the show themes and the Divas dancing was awesome - I always picked Raw since it had Trish. And the soundtrack rocks! SvR 2006 and 2007 were much better sequels, though they did change up the controls a bit in 2007.
I'd like to eventually get to it. Lots of interesting inclusions like the debut of CM Punk, Marcus Cor Von (TNA's Monty Brown), Sabu, Sandman, Terry Funk...
I didn't realize that error until after I posted this video but I did post a comment with corrections and I pinned that comment so everyone can see that.
The OG SmackDown vs Raw game was really good, the problem was it was coming after HCTP. And the roster wasn’t as good as HCTP, so you didn’t have Lesnar, Goldberg, Ultimo Dragon, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, and Steve Austin (who surprisingly wasn’t in the game). That’s why it might feel a little disappointing because it was coming after HCTP, which is considered one of, if not the best WWE game ever made.
If you watched wrestling back then, and didn't own or never played this game between 2004 and 2005, *you missed out big time* . I was 5 when the game came out. Before PS3 and PS4, besides FIFA and GTA San Andreas, SvR was a MUST HAVE video game. I remember so many people borrowing the game off their friends or neighbours. Some people even copied the game disc onto a new cd, rather thsn actually buying the (new) game at the store. The last time I played it was in 2019. The roster was underwhelming for sure, but it was not a disappointment. No way
I remember playing this game with my cousin and as a kid I always thought it was alright I'm not sure if it's due to the nostalgia of us making creating superstars or doing crazy omg moments, but from looking at it now, the roster was abit disappointing and you don't get a win cutscene after a match, the story what you'd expect from wwe around that time but I still find that playing as the undertaker and winning the bra tlc match was wild 😂
And Kane's debut, and the Montreal Screwjob...I felt Austin/McMahon was the most important thing to mention (along with WCW's nWo in 1996) as what was focused on to rebuild the wrestling business after the 1990s slump. But I very much generalized, and there's tons of fascinating stuff going on in wrestling in 1997.
Okay I totally hear what you are saying SDVR could have been much better. I wish this and HCTP had of still hasd the backstage exploring like SYM had too. And I also hated the roster's size. Especially the women's division as I do love women's wrestling, tbh the women were the reason I got interested in wrestling in the first place around 2002. Why the enitre hell was Lita not in SDVR is really beyond me! And Gail Kim, Jazz, Ivory, Jacqueline, Nidia, Dawn Marie, Jackie Gayda & Shaniqua?? And then for legends Alundra Blaze, Bull Nakano, Luna Vachon, Sherri Martel and Chyna. SMH... Also the CAWs I never did love on this game. I also love creating some of fav Indy wrestlers too so that was also a let down 🙁☹
I do agree with you, when I played it when I was little early 2005 I was dissapointed and wanted a new wwe game right away. svr2006 was not that great but looked more appealing.
If my nostalgia is at all accurate, saying SVR 2006 wasn't that great is fightin' words! I look forward to revisiting it in the future to see if I just love it because of my nostalgia. It's been about 20 years since I seriously played 2006, so I don't know what I'll end up thinking.
I vaguely recall liking 2009, although even as a kid I really didn't like 2008 so maybe even then it was just "well, at least it's not 2008 again..." After about SVR 2007 they all kinda blend together in my head.
For me it is one of my favorite, i love the realism of this game, and love to play a prick with the dirty meter. I am currently doing a season mode with Randy Orton on it, i have just finished one with Christian Cage.
This easily has the worst roster too many omission like paul London Eugene La Resistance Hurricane Lita Orlando Jordan & Basham Brothers Svr 2008 is 2nd place to that Title
I'd have to throw Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 on N64 and Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on PS2 into that conversation. Man, wrestling games used to be so diverse and so great.
Smackdown Here Comes The Pain is better than WM 2000. And is as good, if not better than No Mercy. A lot of people have HCTP and No Mercy as their 1 and 1A. Or their 1 and 2. Can't go wrong with either. Won't argue the love of No Mercy bc I love it too. I just have HCTP as my #1.
A lot of commenters here have said that they thought it was a disappointment even at the time. A lot of us loved the game (I was a kid at the time, so I loved most games I played), but it looks like it divided players' opinions even at release.
I will say this game has a soft spot for me personally. SVR is still better than anything 2K has ever released. I will say the biggest negative is by far the roster. This game from a presentation standpoint is probably one of the best between the soundtrack, commentary, and the feel that Raw and Smackdown are enemies. The gameplay is basically the same as HCTP and it’s solid and not filled with bugs. The season mode is short but has memorable moments. The unlockables provide replay ability. I never played it but I believe this was the first ever WWE game to have online servers. Coming off of HCTP I can see this game as disappointing but I will say this is 7/10 game especially compared to how the 2k games are. If the roster had a few others during this era it would be a 8/10.
I agree. Loved it when I was a kid but I think out of all the PS2 smackdown games, the only one I would play this one over is JBI and maybe 09. It's a massive downgrade from HCTP and it's this weird in between from that and 06.
I would definitely struggle to find a reason to want to play this game over most of the ps2 games. And once you add in Japanese titles, the first SVR just has nothing going for it that most other wrestling games of the era don't do better.
To be honest i think single or normal tag matches are so dissapointing in the games past Smackdown just bring it. They're so easy that you just have to knock them outside until a 10 count. Atleast in smackdown 2 you can easily get back in the ring for a less easy win. I played svr06 on psp and it's cool but i played a 6 man tag which should've been a spectacle in season mode. My opponent was outside and my team kept him down for the 10 count for a win in less then 2 mins.
I have nostalgia for it as well as the soundtrack but it was pretty terrible. The expiring contracts and firings are a big reason for the poor roster. Lesnar and I believe Mick Foley were in the beta but got removed. Goldberg, Steiner and Test would have likely been planned (the latter influencing the Diva storylines) as well and Goldberg being a huge part of HCTP so his absence was definitely felt. Steve Austin not being in is still baffling to this day. I don't know why they didn't include The Rock's modern/WM20 look as an alternative but perhaps his schedule didn't allow for it. This game had one of the worst create a wrestler modes. Everything you made just looked like a cartoon no matter how much you tweaked it and it dampened any hope of filling in the roster gaps. Season mode having voiceover was spoiled by the fact that they had awful voice direction. Nobody talked like they did on television and they all sounded like they were reading a script. The dialogue and story choices were cut down as a result. The create a belt and heel/face systems were welcome additions but poorly executed. The belts weren't worth grinding for and felt like a rehash of the Gamecube's WMx8 feature which was equally as poor. I did miss this game's lighting and menus though. SVR06 was a return to form in some ways (better roster, season and GM mode) but had a less appealing presentation than this game.
@HereComesTheGame Glad I could help 💯 My comment was more light-hearted than it sounded. Perhaps I should have put in a "lol". SvR was a huge part of my childhood, at least for a time. I probably view it with rose-tinted glasses.
Don't worry, I'm just kidding around too . SVR was a big part of my childhood too. It's fun to come back to these games as an adult and see how it goes. I'm especially looking forward to SVR 2006 (I loved that one) and SVR 2008 (even as a kid I hated that one) It is true though, I figure as long as people cared enough about what I said that they want to argue with me, then I did something right. If nobody cares at all, I'm really doing badly at that point.
@@HereComesTheGame SvR 2006 probably means more to me. From the soundtrack to the gameplay and game modes. Again, maybe a bit of rose-tinted glasses. A lot of nostalgia with these games. I will have to check out more of your content 👍🏻
Yeah it's pretty bad. In hindsight I hate how WWE treated women's wrestling back then. Just fanservice for the most part. Nothing wrong with that, but can't we have attractive women who also kick ass?
It's not my favorite wrestling game not in my top 3 or 5 but it was still a good game and prefer it over anything after smackdown vs raw 2011 that's when wwe wrestling games fell off for me.
For me it really fell off after WWE 2K14. I remember 2K15 looking insanely great graphically but the heart and soul (and most of the creation modes LOL) were all gone and it never was the same again. I never even got any of them after 2K18 and after following the whole series year by year since 2004 that shocked me. 2K makes pretty games but window dressing is no substitute for substance.

@@Bubba__Sawyer bro that 06 roster is 🤯 (Bret Hart/HBK/Andre Giant/Hogan/Rock/Stone Cold/RVD/Kurt Angle/Big Show/Y2J/Cena/Eddie/Mysterio/Benoit/Masked Kane/Shelton/Batista/Orton etc.³ + being able to edit the moves to the accuracy of your liking (tons of options), custom entrances if the player choses; GM Mode w/the above mentioned roster [🤯] (U could change the wwe title in GM mode from the spinner title to undisputed title design {& back nd forth if the player choses mid GM mode on the same save} (the exhibition mode's 'title mode, how it saves the title holders & records; ppv mode (when titles on the line it updates your title mode title holders as-well)
Just 1 of the ultimate experiences playing a wrestling game. Perfect blend of realism & fun. Could simulate a match fairly accurately for it's time &/or play different playstyles ofc
Still mind-blowing how many yrs later it-took to experience the masterpiece the was 06.. (all because SvR was so 🍑 coming off of HCTP)😅
@@Bubba__Sawyer those day of reckoning games for GameCube I enjoyed as-well btw, played more pt. 1 (the game(s) & console since damaged in storage accident.) But Def. would like to go back to those 1s as well when time allows😅
I didnt like the first svr. However come 2006 and i ended up enjoying it Better, truthfully the first svr felt like A Step Backwards. eliminateing what made the previous Games better was kind of a mistake
I really believe the OG Smackdown vs Raw is a slept on underrated classic that isn't appreciated enough.
How so?
@Bubba__Sawyer SVR was the first game I played since JBI. I really like the brand warfare idea of this game and the added realism to the gameplay that they improved upon in the next couple of entries on top of things like the ECW brand in future games.
i remember having horrible experiences with online. So many sore losers quitting as soon as they were about to lose. And then going "Oh, sorry, i had to go to the toilet" when asked
How tf is a game going to live up to here comes the pain? You could barely build on that game because it was peak perfection.
Very true. I admit that following how great the SmackDown series was meant that this game was fighting an uphill battle from the start. I mostly just wish that this game hadn't regressed as much as it did from HCTP. This ended up being a downgrade IMO
I've always said SDvsRAW was downgraded compared to here comes the pain with features and modes.
HCTP was funner.
I stole this game from my job at EB Games. Turned around and traded it right back to them LOL
I remember the roster being weak for this game. They couldve done better.
@ They left the company. the previous game Here Comes The Pain had most of them.
If it wasn't sandwiched around some of the best entries in the series, maybe I could see your point.
There's no Stone Cold in this game, now THAT'S blasphemous.
So odd.
Yes it was
The first time I would stop playing the new release and play the previous installment because so many features were removed
It really was a big step back. I don't claim to know what people thought at the time- I was a kid at the time and I loved it, but I didn't have the experience or knowledge to examine it critically and I didn't have internet to read other opinions on it - but looking back it doesn't hold up that well because it's a step backwards.
The first Smackdown Vs Raw, was a downgraded Hctp.
And it was still great
It was the worst game in the series
I bought it the day it came out. I was so disappointed. A major downgrade in quality and rosters
Watching 07 tna makes me so happy man. To open a video with it is an instant sub
You got a 141 and 2/3% chance of enjoying my channel! Glad you enjoyed the TNA reference lol. I loved TNA back in the day
@@HereComesTheGame im still a watcher man, it's on tonight 😭
I don't watch TV these days but I heard Bound for Glory was a massive success and I'm sure their relationship with WWE has helped them grow a lot. I'm so happy that TNA is doing well. I remember dark periods like the Hogan era and the weird GFW era where they co-opted that failed brand (although that's where I first saw Eli Drake, who is now LA Knight! YEAH!). So I'm glad they're doing well.
Strongly agree
I remember playing this game religiously as a kid, but I think the main issue was that it felt incomplete in a way. Like they could've added a lot more to it.
Disappointment wasn't big enough to describe this after here comes the pain and before 2006 to two best games in the series. The only ones defending this are Gen Z kids growing up with Cena and Edge as main eventers and never saw a wrestling as anything other than a show on after teen titans go, sorry kids your childhood wasn't as great as you thought.
your right about it failing in some areas like the season mode and crappy mini games.
but with the introduction of online or having someone to play against this was pretty underrated.
the technical wrestlers all have the highest stats. kurt angle, bret hart, beniot, eddie Guerrero in some areas.
with that plus the enhanced reversal mechanics and the variety of moveset options. i went from 50/50 with matches to being practically unbeatable when i unlocked legend taker
being 12 at the time my 30 year old uncle could not take the fact he was getting beat every single time because i had mastered the technical aspect the game pushes
it was the the transition from hctp that was arcadey being able to cheese bots to svr06 where you were getting you ass handed on legend mode with them being able to reverse everything
That Chris Benoit holding That bra is cursed as fuck😂
Yeah that's one of those moments where you're just wondering "everybody was totally fine with this?" It's crazy
Tbh i agree with this...(even though i like it)
I remember when i got this when it first came out and was soo let down by the fact you couldnt go backstage in hardcore matches (apart from that one area)
The games started to become less fun after that
Most excellent video sir, great info and kept me viewing start to finish. Think you'll cover all wrestling games?
I'm glad you enjoyed it (I did make a mistake about the Slobberknocker mode though - it was still in SVR 2006 too). I'm not sure if I'll do more. I want to see how well it does.
I do have a review of Here Comes The Pain up (the audio's a bit iffy, but I think that the discussion about the game in the video is still good) and on October 31 I'm releasing a review of a Japanese exclusive wrestling game called King of Colosseum, so you might like those.
Thanks so much for watching.
Keep going bro! More wrasslin@HereComesTheGame
The biggest thing was this was the first THQ WWE game with online play. That was big when I was in highschool
6 women, you missed Stacy Keibler. Still a horrible amount of women for the roster tho.
Yeah counting is hard, I'm an idiot lol. It's especially bad because I showed Stacy Kiebler in the video too!
@ yep I remember WM19 on GameCube having 7 Divas which was the standard at the time. So for them to go from 7 to only 4 was crazy!
To be fair I'd imagine that the roster ended up smaller in the GameCube games because the discs themselves couldn't store as much as regular DVDs. For example one of the Legends of Wrestling games had interviews with a bunch of legends but they had to cut those for space on the GameCube
Wouldn't exactly say it was disappointing..it's just the game before and after it were just that much better
No, it was good but not as good as hctp due to the leniar season mode and no victory scenes and championship matches. Now svr 2008 was a lump of shit.
oh the comment section is going to cook you for this take. but still a great review that explains all of the mechanics of the game etc. please do the future SVR games like 06, 07 or 08!!
Granted, they won't actually show you much cutscenes and story and will just let you play matches after matches without anything happening story-wise.
yep this is where the fall off began, but which season mode is worst? this or jbi.
I agree completely, the voice acting did ruin a lot of the game too, really unnecessary 😒
ngl i can never turn my back on svr 2007 on up... i just cant too many good memories
I'm looking forward to revisiting 2007. I'm just criticizing the very first one here but I remember loving 2006 and 2007.
7:45
Reference to Eddie R.I.P vs Cena on Smackdown.
The intro alone is goated on svr
One of my favorite intros in any wrestling game ever. It's great
For the svr games I always hated thq and wwe especially for not trying to included close to 100 guys in the game cause I stg wwe had a stacked roster from 2002-2008 and I never seen guys like Jamie Noble,Shannon Moore,Test,Funaki,Nunzio to never appeared in any game
Compared to previous and future games isee what youre saying but overall its still a fun game to play to me
This game promised a lot at the time, if they weren't going to include Brock Lesnar or Goldberg they should have at least included the following:
Divas:
- Lita
- Dawn Marie
- Nidia
- Jacqueline
- Jackie Gayda
- Jazz
- Gail Kim
Wrestlers:
- Test
- William Regal
- Goldust
- Val Venis
- Mark Henry
- Matt Morgan
- Rikishi
- Orlando Jordan
- Lance Storm
- Billy Gunn
Tag Team/Factions:
- La Rèsistance (Rob Conway & Sylvain Grenier)
- The Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny)
- FBI (Nunzio & Stamboli)
- Kyo Dai (Akio & Sakoda)
- S.H.I.T (The Hurricane & Rosey)
Cruiserweight Division:
- Billy Kidman
- Jamie Noble
- Shannon Moore
- Ultimo Dragon
- Paul London
- Brian Kendrick
- Funaki
Done, they had a good list of wrestlers there that would have made the game much better but they didn't take advantage of it, and it's a shame because the roster from 2003 and early 2004 is one of my favorites.
When you had classics like WWE shut your mouth and here comes the pain. The SVR games lacked the gameplay and roster. I was definitely disappointed when i bought it.
I played it for years when I got it for my 14th Christmas.
I liked this game better than SvR 06 because Molly Holly and Matt Hardy are in it
@@Highrollinhunter Victoria for me
It was a disappointment, however it’s still a good game.
Are you going to cover svr 2008 mostly due to the roster
I'd like to eventually get to it. Lots of interesting inclusions like the debut of CM Punk, Marcus Cor Von (TNA's Monty Brown), Sabu, Sandman, Terry Funk...
Actually, there are 6 women’s not 5 you forgot Stacy Keibler
1997 was The formation of DX in the WWE
And Kane's debut, and the Montreal Screwjob...I felt Austin/McMahon was the most important thing to mention (along with WCW's nWo in 1996) as what was focused on to rebuild the wrestling business after the 1990s slump. But I very much generalized, and there's tons of fascinating stuff going on in wrestling in 1997.
Smackdown Here comes the pain is the greatest Wrestling Game ever.
Slobberknocker mode is in svr 2006
Damn. You're right. I didn't even remember that being in there, but you're right.
SVR 2006 wasn’t that great??? You must think that 2009 is a masterpiece 🤦🏻♂️.
@@joesant1943 I went back to svr 2006 and your right, it was a good game. svr2008 & 9 was bad. I got it mixed up.
I vaguely recall liking 2009, although even as a kid I really didn't like 2008 so maybe even then it was just "well, at least it's not 2008 again..." After about SVR 2007 they all kinda blend together in my head.
1st thing I hated was the camera angle change.
For me it is one of my favorite, i love the realism of this game, and love to play a prick with the dirty meter. I am currently doing a season mode with Randy Orton on it, i have just finished one with Christian Cage.
Correct. It was a step down from HCTP
This easily has the worst roster too many omission like paul London Eugene La Resistance Hurricane Lita Orlando Jordan & Basham Brothers Svr 2008 is 2nd place to that Title
Svr was so good. One of the best wrestling games ever. It was like a more polished version of hctp
Polished with stool
Has there been a better wrestling game than N64's WWF No Mercy & WWF Wrestlemania 2000 yet?
I'd have to throw Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 on N64 and Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on PS2 into that conversation. Man, wrestling games used to be so diverse and so great.
Hctp svr 06
Smackdown Here Comes The Pain is better than WM 2000. And is as good, if not better than No Mercy.
A lot of people have HCTP and No Mercy as their 1 and 1A. Or their 1 and 2. Can't go wrong with either.
Won't argue the love of No Mercy bc I love it too. I just have HCTP as my #1.
It can’t really be a disappointment when everyone back then like these games even if your opinion on it changed now
A lot of commenters here have said that they thought it was a disappointment even at the time. A lot of us loved the game (I was a kid at the time, so I loved most games I played), but it looks like it divided players' opinions even at release.
Forget how long ago it was before Kane unmasked
This was one of the best one
We just wanted HCTP with an updated roster.
Gonna completely disagree with you. SmackDown from 04 - 06 was PEAK SmackDown and must see TV!
Svr 2011 was literally the only reason i bought an old ps2
...It was on PS3...
@@dropout818 and on PS2
Not as good as HCTP but I still loved it
The first smackdown vs raw was a great game
Big part of my childhood
To me this game only lacked in roster depth. Other than that, it was great
Yeah you're right its bad we have guys like scott jay modding svr but it doesn't mean anything if you cant fight the modded guys in season
This game was my childhood idc what ur thoughts are !
No it was not because of its graphics till now graphics are particularly the 2004 one till now graphics developers encourage and accept it 😢
Not to me. I loved the crap out of that game and still own a copy.
I genuinely liked this game a lot
Still better than the 2k games. I just tried out 2k24 recently and the gameplay is way too weird
This game was BAD. Bad meaning bad not bad meaning good to quote Run DMC.
Don't listen to some of these comments. You're certainly entitled to be as wrong as you are currently.
As long as I get engagement, I'm winning the UA-cam game...
I'm especially looking forward to SVR 2006 (I loved that one) and SVR 2008 (even as a kid I hated that one)
It is true though, I figure as long as people cared enough about what I said that they want to argue with me, then I did something right.
Thanks, I hope you like my stuff. I appreciate your time
to me it wasn't that bad. still enjoyable to play
9:59 you're looking for a decent women's roster won't be getting that until...2k16? 17?
Yeah it's pretty bad. In hindsight I hate how WWE treated women's wrestling back then. Just fanservice for the most part. Nothing wrong with that, but can't we have attractive women who also kick ass?
First 06 and 07 were so much better
SvR was great, depending on the year ofc. You do you, but man... Some of them are still great.
I think a lot of them are still good, but the first one is pretty weak IMO. 2008 is also a weak one IMO
This game was just HCTP, but much less freedom.
Disrespectful as hell lol
This game was fire
No, it actually wasn't for me. But I respect your point of perspective.
