Best Gaming Trackball Mouse
#1 Ploopy Adept ploopy.co/adept-trackball/
#2 Gameball www.gamingtrackball.com/. Keep eye out for Pro / 2.0
The rest are based on compromise you're willing to make:
* X-Keys L-Trac, if you're ok with just 2 buttons, or an extension Frankenstein.
* Ploopy Classic, if scroll-wheel isn't super important.
* Elecom Huge, if you're down to DIY replace the bearings.

      I have not tried it, no. I'm not much a DIY kinda guy, though I plan to be eventually (I'd love to build a split keyboard). I'm 99% sure there is a BTU mod, or maybe it's simply that Classic & Adept have the same ball-holding structure that the BTU mod for Classic is compatible with Adept. Just that I thought I saw a blog post about BTU for Adept, but I can't seem to find it now

    The only issue with the slimblade for me was actually the scrolling - working in audio and video editing, the placement of the pointer while scrolling makes a large difference for accuracy. The slimblade pointer would inadvertently move from where I needed it to be like 90% of the time. Any workaround for this that you know of? I’d much prefer the slimblade to the expert if it would be more consistent in that one area

    Personally I cant comprehend how anyone still says $100 a lot of money. Like, what do you own that costs less than a $100 these days? I mean a basic decent quality T shirt will cost like $30 these days unless you have Costco. AirPods Pro cost $200. an Iphone costs over a thousand dollars. A decent pair of running shoes that isn't an older model costs at least $150 if not more, and of course you need more than one pair. A decent set of bath towels costs close to $100. A month worth of paper towels cost like $20 with costco and double that or more without. A tank of gas in these giant cars most Americans drive costs nearly $100. A dinner for 2 at some over rated American restaurant serving trash food costs about $100. I just bought one package of insecticide for my home and it cost $45, and it's nothing special. Calling an exterminator out for one trip would cost a multiple of that. God forbid your air conditioner breaks and you need to call an AC company, I've seen them charge people $350 to change a $10 capacitor that takes 5 minutes. My point is. $100 is just normal for anything in the world today. in 1994 money this thing would cost about $45, call it $50. Thats the evolving value of money in terms of purchasing power. Maybe I'm just stressed and going off.

    Tried meditation for a while, but I found it akin to "drowning" my worries in mundane sensory observations. It did help with getting to sleep, but I found I had a bit more difficulty getting up in the morning. Switched to journaling which I found worked faster for clearing the "worries" out of my head than meditation, not quite as good for sleep but still effective. Then switched to doing a small To Do list for the next day, no more than 5 items. Just having things slightly thought out and lined up for the morning seemed to dispel >80% of my worries and takes only 1-2 minutes. While this worked quite well, it also has a negative in that I tended to focus on small concrete "task units" more in the morning which would put me more in that mode all day... it basically shoved metacognition into the shadows in the back of my mind & made me behave more like a task completion robot. This was great when I had a backlog of tasks to complete, but wasn't so great for figuring out what to do when I was done with everything that mattered... I sometimes found myself making up bs tasks to complete to fill out the remainder of my day rather than engaging with any deep work. To solve for this, I started taking a 25 minute rest in the middle of the day where I'd get as comfortable as possible, block out sound with headphones and put a dark cloth over my eyes to block out light, then just allow myself to ruminate on whatever came up. I find I fairly often get great insights during this & make big strides on solving complex problems. And I found I didn't "need" to do anything at night to make it easier to sleep anymore, although I still do give myself a short 3-5 item task list for the morning typically bc it gets me started right away rather than meandering aimlessly for a while. I like to order the list from shortest to longest task and ramp up into the workday, then use this rumination state to switch modes to deep work around halfway through the day. Working great for me for the last 4 months or so.

    I purchased both of these because I was looking to replace my Kinsington Expert trackball with a trackball with higher DPI for FPS games. I was disappointed in both of them. As far as ball movement, they are both great. They both fail in scrolling. In most FPS the scroll is used to switch weapons and tools. The SlimBlade will not scroll and move at the same time. The GameBall scroll is way up at the top of the trackball and almost out of reach. I ended up sending them both back. :( Still looking for a good gaming trackball, has anyone found something better?

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire 14 днів тому

      Ploopy Classic would fit your bill except that the scroll wheel's polling rate is 8hz, really bad for rapid scrolling. I'd wait for the next GameBall (Pro or 2.0)

  • @Daves3DProjects
    @Daves3DProjects 14 днів тому

    As a long time user of the Kensington Expert, I was looking for a trackball with higher DPI. This Slimblade is very disappointing for gaming. In most FPS, the scroll is used to switch weapons. However, with the Slimblade cannot move and scroll at the same time. This makes it useless in most FPS games.

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire 13 днів тому

      Scroll + mouse makes finding a gaming mouse difficult, and I recommend waiting for the GameBall 2.0 / Pro. The current options are Ploopy Adept (you can't scroll + mouse, so not a solution for you); GameBall 1.0 (lots of downsides IMO); and Ploopy Classic (the scrollwheel has 8hz polling rate, so this is only viable if you don't need to scroll fast). I use Ploopy Adept, since I don't need both scroll + move at the same time for my games. But GameBall 2.0 will solve a lot of these woes.

    Hey super awesome review! How is the Ploopy tilt compared to the Slimblade, like the Expert tilt and height is annoying and you definitely need the wrist rest to use it. Looking your video the tilt and height of the Ploopy looks more like the Expert than the Slimblade. I would love a picture of the sides of the three comparing the height and tilt of each.

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire 14 днів тому

      I'd say it's negligible tilt, similar to Slimblade. Both Adept and Slimblade have an oh-so-small tilt, but it's nothing really. The Expert was a freaking boat ramp, I have no clue how they thought that was ergonomic! They should have added the tilt on the other axis, for reduced pronation (though that would remove the ambidextrous aspect). Anyway, point is: I'd definitely use a wrist-rest for the Expert; and it's not needed for Adept or Slimblade

      @lefnire 19 днів тому

      Well - and I'll take that advice to heart, and go through adding some disclaimers - but the Xiser is still a rockstar device which I use every day. I just wouldn't use it for 8hrs a day. The thing is that its intensity level is so high, that you wouldn't be able to use it that long anyway, so what I typically do is Xiser for 2 hours, at which point I've reached my max heart rate long above-and-beyond CDC. Then I walk the rest. That was my "best of both worlds" of the two devices, which removed the knee pain. Of course, take this with a grain of salt since you actually have knee problems and I don't; so it's easy for me to just talk about pain. But I'd be curious if it works out for you.

    I'm curious about the Adept. Have you used it for first person games much? In a shooter you would need to be holding down a right click, scrolling the ball and left clicking repeatedly all at the same time very often. I'm just a bit curious what that looks like for you on the Adept. Also a little concerned about not being able to aim while scrolling. Probably not a dealbreaker for me either way since I mostly play strategy and third person action games.

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire Місяць тому

      I've been playing BG3 and Cyberpunk. To your scenario, left + right + ball is easy-peasy with the Adept. But I will caveat: I'm not a good gamer. I play both games on the easiest setting, so I can't speak to high reaction comfort on Adept vs the others; I can only speak to overall long-term comfort, and simplicity of accessing most buttons most of the time - to wit I think Adept is the best. For left + right + ball, I think the only contender would be Gameball, which in its current form (pre Pro / 2.0) isn't ergonomic enough for long-term use. Next-up contender is Ploopy Classic, whose scroll-wheel sucks. So even with my caveats, I feel very confident telling you: Adept is the way.

    Thank you so much for this interview. I was on the fence about getting the Egofit M2 or the Walkingpad C2 and you are the 2nd person to say to go for the Egofit. I also am going to go on the website for the Comfort model for the 3% incline as well.

    Thanks for the great video. The Adept actually has a mod that allows you to use ball bearings instead of the roller ones, although I've tried neither I imagine they're quieter, and allow more freedom.

    I hate the L-Trac, I would rather use an Elecom Huge or Slimblade any day. I find the dynamic bearings on the L-trac to be worse than the static bearings in any Elecom trackball. I also theorize that the 'stiction' with static bearings may be due to oils interacting with the plastic ball. My niece got into speed cubing, and they use silicone based lube on the cubes. I noticed that using a petroleum based lube will make a speed cube experience stiction. I washed off an old logitech ball (and static bearings) that was experiencing stiction using detergent and alcohol. Then I used a speed cube lubricant on the ball. No stiction. I find lubricating trackballs using the "forehead/nose" method will help stiction for a few days and then it comes back. Using a silicone lubricant seemed to fix it for a long time.

      Thanks for the tip! I bought an entry level trackball mouse recently because I have RSI (bicep tendonitis) on my mouse hand. That mouse is surprisingly good considering the 20e price but does suffer from stiction when I have to make really precise movements. Thanks to your comment, I ordered some silicone based speedcube lube to maybe mitigate that issue a bit.

    I had the old CST trackball with steel rollers, and I thought it was the least smooth trackball I ever used. A lot of people on old trackball/ergonomic forums would wax poetic on how good steel rollers felt, but I think they were wrong. Since then many people have talked about how bad the CST was. I absolutely hated the roughness of moving bearings, to the point that I'm cautious about spending so much on a ploopy, in case people are just mass hallucinating about the smoothness again.

      This is really good to know. Since posting a few of these videos, I've gotten a lot of complaints against L-Trac similar to yours. Having never tried it myself, I was going off all the reviews, debates on Reddit, rages against myself, etc and it the sentiment was unanimous, so I took it at face value. What I can say personally is that I switched from Slimblade to Adept exclusively, having used a ton of these mice, and I find the Adept smoother, even with the roller bearings. I started using it for gaming (for the smoothness, lack of stiction); then wondered why I was using Slimblade for productivity, and consolidated.

      @@lefnire I've got the Elecom thumball with the rollers. I find it better than the L-trac, but I have a similar gripe. The rolling resistance is much lower than any static bearing trackball I have. However, the resistance isn't the same in every direction, since there are 3 rollers facing different directions. This gives it a 'gritty' type of feeling that I dislike. It can also make the resistance feel unpredictable. I think I might prefer the higher rolling resistance that is much more consistent and predictable.

    I believe the L-Trac actually has three buttons, there is a smaller circular middle click between the trackball and scroll wheel. Personally I think if you want many buttons easily accessible, the MTE/gameball style is vastly superior to the ambidextrous style in almost all cases.

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire Місяць тому

      Trust me when I say, under desk pedals are the worst. The reason is how much conscious focus they require to engage. Treadmills are the best because they move you, are electric - you just have to keep up. So people often start with an under desk pedaler and get turned off; but it's the worst representation of fitness desks. Somewhere in the middle are standing steppers, like a Xiser Pro Trainer. But a treadmill, if you have the space for it, is the best by a long shot

    Did you try a Apple Trackpad? I think this is also a real good thing (even for Windows, with a github addon!) I also am amazed about not resting your arms at all... For me this it crazy. I can type without it but it just doesn't feel ergonomic. Love the video's! (Y)

    • @lefnire
      @lefnire Місяць тому

      Apple Trackpad is one that I haven't done justice to in my ergonomics exploration. I indeed HAVE tried it (and I agree, you should get Apple's even for Windows, as I've tried others); but I haven't really given it a fair shot after the RSI came on, so I can't speak to its ergonomics. But it comes up often, so I need to give it another go. Only reason I haven't is that I prefer trackballs mechanically; I just like using them better than I like using trackpads. For arm rests, I'm pretty staunch on my "no wrist rests" take; but what I would recommend are chair arms high enough as elbow rests to keep the arms raised at the proper level for 90deg mouse/keyboard.

    • @lefnire

      Yeah, Orbit didn't really do it for me. Can't pin-point what exactly, but it was my first finger-ball and I moved on in fairly short order. The buttons felt mushy, I experienced miss-clicks, lots of stiction, and the scroll ring (I have the Fusion) was jumpy. I know a lot of people love the Orbit; I've also heard that the Orbit (original) is better than the Orbit Fusion (the upgrade). Further, I may have just gotten a dud - like it sucked to an extent that had me surprised - I know it's a gamble, but I actually have a hunch this is what happened.
