Control City Freak
United States
Приєднався 22 кві 2021
This channel covers every 2 digit Interstate Highway in America, and more! I've been a roadgeek and a Control City Freak my whole life, and I've driven in every state in the Lower 48. In this channel, I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!
US 6 Eastern Eastbound
US 6 is the second longest road in the US, and formerly the longest. Today we take a look at it's interesting eastern half between the Mississippi River and Cape Cod. It's a great ride!!

Hey Todd thanks for highlighting my requests! I had to add a really big blurb about Public Square (where Tower City is located) in Cleveland. It’s actually the start of many routes, both US and state routes: Leaving WB on Superior is the start of US 42 and OH-3. Leaving EB on Superior is the start of US 322 (concurrent with US 6) Leaving SB on Ontario is the start of US 422, OH 8, OH 14, OH 43 (not signed until Miles Ave), OH 87 and historically US 21. Leaving SE on Euclid Ave: US 20. Historically US 6 and US 20 continued to be concurrent until the intersection in East Cleveland and Euclid was ALT US 6 and ALT US 20 up to that point. There used to be some cool old school signs at the intersection that had most of the routes but they were removed when through traffic was removed through the center of Public Square. Fun fact: US 6 and US 20 are the only continuous routes through Public Square.
That's awesome, thanks for the info!
My way it should be: Couer d’Alene Boise Nampa Reno Fallon Las Vegas Phoenix Laughlin Los Angeles Flagstaff Blythe Phoenix Yuma San Luis
Ironic that NH greets travelers with "Live Free or...." and then immediately charges tolls.

I want to go to MILFord!!
The hotel that was suppose to be New Mexico, were they talking about the lost suitcase, that's in Pueblo, Co. The House Eddie lived in in the movie is 25 miles east of that hotel. It was recently sold and they do mention it was in the movie. The Subaru wagon, in that scene later was owned by my aunt, the red one.
Glad they mentioned it in the sale, that's awesome!
Watch it! What's wrong with the town of Greencastle,PA?
Wenzville is famous as where Chuck Berry brought his underage girlfriends to his crib!
You didn't mention Santa Ana at I-5 south.
The sign in Beaumont that includes U.S. 287 zhould say Limon.
There are NO freeways anywhere in Alaska. Having multiple lanes does NOT make a freeway. None of the multi-lane roadways in Alaska have merge lanes or off-lanes to allow for free flow of traffic.
Yes, there are some. I cover them in this video. They exist. Roads with limited access and ramps for grade separated intersections. They may not be long, but they unquestionably exist.
@@ControlCityFreak Freeways absolutely do NOT exist in Alaska. NONE of the highways here in Alaska have access points that allow traffic to enter or exit the flow of traffic without impeeding or obstructing the highway traffic. There are no acceleration lanes, merge lanes, or deceleration lanes. Just because there are multiple lanes or grassy medians does NOT make a highway a freeway, regardless of what anyone wants to call it.
You should do US Route 11.
Just took this off of 666 likes.
26:28 - K.C.Chiefs employ former Eagles head coaches.
28:54 - The sign of Bear Mountain Bridge makes it appear that the bridge is part of a New York parkway. I have walked across this bridge from Ft.Montgomery, NY. Bear Mountain Bridge is the lowest elevation along the A.T. (sea level)
The traffic circle at the entrance to the Bear Mountain Bridge is at the end of the Palisades Interstate Parkway which starts at the George Washington Bridge.
28:08 US-6 joins with NY-17 / I-86 Southern Teir Expressway.
The Southern Tier Expwy is only west of Binghamton. East of there it is called the Quickway. East of Windsor NY is Future I-86, it is still just NY 17.
@RonD937 I thought Pennsylvania built the Keystone Quickway [ I-80 ] in about 1970. ...or .. ..-... hmmm.. Was I-80 Keystone Shortway?
27:12 - Thanks for showing this 3-state monument. I want to go there. I have been to the Mason-Dixon arc-corner monument (Delaware/Pennsylvania) near Newark, Delaware.
I 99 north should be Rochester NY.
0:42 - I'll confuse US-6 and 6th Ave.
1:33 - I-80 does not go to Chicago. I-90, I-94 do go to Chicago.
I-80 serves Chicago. It doesn't go to Des Moines, Toledo, Cleveland, Youngstown, or New York either. Should they sign Omaha at I-95?
1:35 Joliet is not a suburb of Chicago. It is a satellite city with a history as long as Chicago's as well as the third largest city in the state. 3:29 It's pronounced "mar-sales" in Illinois. Yes, I know, they bastardize the French. 3:43 Pronounced "shana-hon". 4:39 However, IL-171 is Collins Street in Joliet (State Street in Lockport to the north). 5:16 Orland Park is east of the county line here. You're on Wolf Road, west of the county line (Will-Cook) in Homer Glen.
Love it. Tid-e-yoot. Tie-on-esta. Both towns are marked for various reasons. Tionesta is the de facto seat of Forest Co. Tidioute is marked as last major town of Warren Co. Both towns in 1900 had populations in the thousands for logging for Pittsburgh. Tidioute had a population of 3500 at the time. Tidioute's nail in the coffin was a fire in the 70s wiping half the center of town out.
Thanks!
Enjoyed this as a PA native that's traveled most of 6 in PA. Tidioute > Tid-ee-youte Tionesta > Ty-o-nesta or Ty-nesta (I've heard and used both) - Tionesta is the county seat of Forest County, a county without a full fledged traffic light
The freeway that US 6 is on in NY State just west of the Thruway is the eastern end of the NY 17 (Future I-86) Quickway. Also, it’s pronounced MAYO-pack. In Bristol, there is a turnoff for CT 229 that will take you to ESPN and Lake Compounce, the oldest continuously operating amusement park. Continue past ESPN, and you hit my hometown of Southington.
@21:52 Coudersport as in louder sport
Idk if my comment made it, or it got deleted. But i have one more request, well more like a building request. To the left of Exit 67 For PA-121. There's a gold windowed building. It looks very cool, but you can imagine driving past in in very sunny weather 🌞🌞
Thanks, you got it! That'll be the last one I add to 376
There should be a sign for Limon at U.S. 287.
This route, like most spurs, is relatively easy to sign. From south to north, I have Tijuana-Chula Vista-Los Angeles. Not much else to say regarding this route except for the appalling amount of controls. I had a feeling that at least one San Diego video would make references to Top Gun. The music (especially the Anthem) and aerial sequences are amazing, but other aspects of the film aren’t as awesome. Following one of the most tragic death scenes ever with a closeup of Tom Cruise’s butt in tighty-whiteys? Really? I admittedly have yet to see the sequel, though I really should, considering I live only an hour away from the program’s new home in Fallon. When it comes to Tom Cruise movies, I’ll stick with A Few Good Men; I don’t know, I just like characters that have a smartass response to anything and everything… Regarding musical acts from the area, it’s a pretty short area to search, as the metro area only consists of San Diego County (I think it’s the largest metro based on a sole county). I did find three that I’d argue are well known: blink-182, Stone Temple Pilots and Switchfoot.
The sequel was decent. I liked the original more, but it's not really fair since I've seen it 7,000 times and the sequel just the once. It gave you everything you want, and for people my age it was good to see Jennifer Connelly still looks fantastic
It's pronounced Mat uh poice it. And people are so rich there I think God lives in the neighborhood. It's not Folmouth, it's Fal mouth. And they're rich too. God has a summer cottage there.😮😅😊
Yeah I forgot to make a request (or three) for my son, who at 7 identified the location in the thumbnail. Anyways, during December there's a snowflake illuminated at night high over Bear Mountain looking over the bridge that carries its namesake, and it can be seen for a few miles up and down the Hudson.
Nice! Awesome he could recognize the spot!
Exit request for I-376 - exit 67 PA 121 westbound has my (and Bill Cower's) hometown - Crafton, PA but is shown on westbound only. I-376 used to be PA 60 from I-80 to Us 22/30, then US 22/30 until I-79, then I-279 from I-79 through Pittsburgh with I-376 starting from I-279 in downtown. Penndot changed it circa 2009 because they wanted the entire roadway to be signed as an interstate. As a result the interstates don't follow the three digit interstate rules.
Thanks, you got it!
17:17 All the mentions of OH2, but OH7 is also a very interesting route (along with it being the longest in the state). Very funky road with a lot of plans for buildup.
18:05 Linesville, which is right by Pymatuning Lake, is home of the local “legendary” Linesville Spillway, where “the ducks walk on the fish.” 18:12 And Conneaut Lake is home of the now defunct Conneaut Lake Park, one of the very few free admission amusement parks.
I live close to US 6 in PA, so I can help you out with the pronunciation of Wyalusing & Tunkhannock. Wyalusing(Y-ah-loo-sing), & Tunkhannock(Tunk-han-nock). I'm surprised you got Meshoppen right off the bat, unfortunately a lot of out of towners call it Me-shOp-pen.
Tallahassee representing!
Todd do you prefer gothic signage or clearview?
I’m pretty agnostic on it actually
@ okay because a friend asked me
Watkins Glen International a race track is accessible from I86.
This is an interesting gimmick, and I would like to see more of this in the future. I’ve got a couple of things to say. I am very well aware of your opinions on Joplin along 49 S and St. Joseph on 29 N, but don’t worry; if you’re tired of hearing my disagreements on those two, I do have other observations that (may) be new. Regarding St. Joseph, I think it’s good northbound out of Kansas City; yes, it’s very close, but I’m just not a fan of skipping mid-sized metros if the next one is more than 100 miles beyond. And Omaha (or Council Bluffs at least) is by my estimated roughly 120 miles past the last exit in St. Joseph. Southbound out of Council Bluffs, however, is where the close proximity between the two Missouri cities makes St. Joseph by itself a problem. And my biggest issue with Springfield on 49 S is that the fastest route is NOT all freeway (if MO 7-MO 13 were a spur route at 100% freeway standard, then I’d be fine with Springfield). As is, my solution would be guide signs approaching 49 S (largely near the 435 interchange) saying something along the lines of “Springfield use I 49 S”, and for the secondary mileage control to be Harrisonville. In fact, I just realized something else regarding 49 S leaving Kansas City: only about 75 miles past Joplin is the Northwest Arkansas metro area, which is actually 25% bigger than Springfield (610k vs 490k). As a result, if I were to list a second city on an overhead for 49 S, I’d argue Fayetteville is a stronger choice… Now for the newer observations. I think both K-10 and I 70 W should be signed for Lawrence. Topeka’s metro population isn’t quite high enough in relation to Lawrence’s (232k vs 120k) for my tastes. But the main point I want to bring up is how this is an example of two neighboring metro areas being served by two parallel freeways where there doesn’t seem to be one route faster than the other. In such cases, I’d actually advocate for directional references to where in the city the route goes: I 70 would be Lawrence North and K-10 would be Lawrence South. For I 70 E, I’d actually use Columbia. You also mentioned a ‘100 mile rule’, and Columbia does qualify, as its most extreme exits are both roughly 110 miles from those of Kansas City and St. Louis. Now, once east of Columbia, is where I say St. Louis is prioritized, no excuses. My only other observation is regarding the U.S. Highways, specifically 69 and 169. From what I can see, those exits you showed are for city streets. In this case, I think the city street names are okay; I just want them to get the appropriate shields, which in this case they seem to do.
I agree on city street names, I’m good with that. Overland Parkway is a freeway though, and it’s also 69’s final split with 35 after being intertwined since it’s start in Albert Lea.
Todd ranks his background music would you just kiddig
Here in Connecticut when I-84 and US 6 are concurrent, they ALWAYS mention I-84, and US 6 gets lost in the shuffle. The only time we see US 6 is when it "exits itself".
Great job, as usual. Exit requests for I-376: 65 (PA 50) - I used to live in Carnegie; 67 (PA 121) - Olive Garden where I ate regularly.
Thanks so much, you got it!
Tiddy-YOOT. Also, I grew up just over a mile north of 6N in Edinboro. The western terminus of 6N is at I-90 at the PA/OH line.
I've spent way too much time on this road. I've heard this saying about US 6, it's a long road that goes everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
Coudersport is pronounced Cow-dersport. I lived in Emporium which is in Cameron County the smallest county pop wise in Pa. Coudersport, Smethport and Port Allegheny are all around 20 to 25 miles away.
> 21:48 < I would say Cloudersport as if the word *cloud* is in the word.
