US 90: Gulf Coastyness

- US 90 is an X0 US Highway that was never coast to coast due to being too far south - US 80 plied the Van Horn to San Diego route. After leaving West Texas, it hugs the Gulf Coast all the way to Florida before moving on to Jacksonville. It's a cool road!

I appreciate this video a lot as I traveled on US 90 a lot during my hiking trip in the Florida panhandle rather than Interstate 10. I took similar photos of those major intersections too (US 90 with US 19, US 27, US 221, US 129, US 41 and US 441.
One interesting fact about Olustee on US 90 is a Civil War battle took place there and in Greenville, Ray Charle's Childhood home is located there with a statue off of US 90 too.
Thank you for all the great work!
US 287 should be signed for Limon.
🤬
ALL HAIL LIMON! 🫡
If taking US 287 all the way, that's 948 miles according to Google Maps; shorter if going through Dallas and Oklahoma City but with tolls.
troll alert
Limon? LIMON! :D
US 90 also has an offramp / intersects where Causeway Blvd (the world's longest water bridge) begins.
It is kind of amazing how I drive on Hwy 90 everyday, and if I just took it straight all the way one day I would be on a beach somewhere in less than 2 hours.
And also, Who Dat!
I never understood why TXDOT does not have any signs for US90 on Houston's Katy freeway. There was alot of them back in the late eighties and early 90's, with the over head button copies. They went away when they switched to the new style signs. There is only one on the east side of downtown when 90 joins back up with I-10 heading west. Thanks for pointing out that they are stingy. LOL
What an interesting journey on US 90! Also ty for my request!
Very good point at the 12:00 minute mark. Accidentally went left instead of veering to the right and ended up in Metairie, trying to scramble to get back to I-10. Literally just two weeks ago.
You missed the Prada “store” between Van Horn and Marfa 😂 it’s a artsy-fartsy joke by the artisans who reside out in far-west Texas!!
Here it is for those unfamiliar: maps.app.goo.gl/351KxZeebnAZYcRx5
Another great video Todd. Loved it. I can imagine, before the interstate, musicians and ball teams likely traveled US. 90 as a major regional cross country highway.
For this list, as per usual for U.S. Routes that have been (largely) supplanted by Interstates, I will treat the concurrent segments as if they were the only highway present.

Planning my 2025 summer road trip, I think I will be following 90 westbound for a good chunk. Thus, I’ll get to experience the local route through much of the Gulf Coast.
Should be a cool trip!
Can you do 295 in Jacksonville? Thanks.
Very appropriate for Todd to be wearing a shirt that looks like a refs uniform considering he’s a fan of the chiefs and all…😅
US-90 in Florida, signing small towns N&S makes sense, cause going East, you know Jax and West Tallahassee or Pensacola… And since parallels I-10, if you’re going long distance, or to Atlanta or Tampa, I-75. A1A in Jax Beach is Jimmy Buffet Hwy! Florida would like to build a limited access highway parallel g US-19 to meet the Turnpike in Inverness, through Big Bend and “caddy corner” I-10&I-75; lots of opposition from the locals though… Thx!
Its fun that both US 69/96 and I-69/I-96 are palindromes and both have overlapping sections
US 90 had a brief extension north from Van Horn to US 62/180 in 1939 with the hopes of extending it all of the way to California but was changed back to ending at US 80 due to AASHTO rejecting the Cali extension in 1940.
I’ve finished US 98 and US 98 is singed perfectly in Mississippi it’s it’s golden route
Stayed in Marathon TX right alongside of US 90 last year when we visited Big Bend National Park. So those couple of pictures in the Marathon area looked very familiar! Absolutely amazing dark skies out there!
I've been on several different portions of US 90. It's a pretty interesting road.
I remember when I-10 had construction late 70s - early 80s, and had detours to US 90. I remember driving through towns like Chatahoochee and Sneads, FL. State road 10 in Florida is mostly unsigned US 90 (there are 13 miles where SR 10 is US alt 90 and SR 10A is US 90). Edit: US 17 goes south on Main street and turns right at State street (where US 23 begins), and it is 2 blocks north of Beaver Street. I think that's an FDOT mistake showing US 1-17-90 South on Main at Beaver, where it should only be US 1-90
In Beaumont, the current routing of US 90, becoming concurrent with IH 10 (Texas style) and US 69/96/287, has been since 2020 during the pandemic. The former routing continued straight into downtown Beaumont along surface streets and turned left along parallel one-way streets one block east of the Beaumont Bridge Studio where I work today. After that, it goes on a viaduct over a railroad that is in the center line of a street (mixed-use street) and joins IH 10 at exit 855A, east of the split with US 69/96/287.
504 Road Trips has a video detailing the trip westbound on the former routing: ua-cam.com/video/oQezGjedhVo/v-deo.html
27:30 I disagree. Jacksonville's most famous bridge is a different one.
To quote Fred Durst "John Otto, take em to the Mathews Bridge!"
I was in Jacksonville a couple years ago! And the First time I saw A1A, I thought of Vanilla Ice! lol
I have cycled nearly all of US 90 from Baldwin, FL to New Orleans. I was surprised how hilly US 90 was around Tallahassee and some points west in Florida.. 23:24 - a great example of how hilly Tallahassee can be. When I went to the state house on my bike trip, it was a climb.
That sounds awesome!
I just so happened to get wifi back just in time for this video
FYI, the US 90 bridge crossing the Pearl River from Louisiana to Mississippi has been closed for a good while now. Was driving on US 190 east of Slidell, LA to cross that bridge and found out the road was closed going to it, had to turn around and go back to I-10.
@@stevengolden9009 Closed since 2022.
Did you stop at the First Self-Righteous Church in Pascagoula, home of the great Mississippi Squirrel revival? :D (Bonus points to those who get the reference)
Lol. Never got off I-10 the one time I was in the area.
For your 280 video, if it's not too late, I'd like to request the Flintstone house. In case you haven't gotten a million requests for it already, you can find it just north of the CA-35 / CA-92 junction at the end of a long viaduct.
Thanks so much! I had time to add it
Man I should’ve told you to mention the Sanderson rail station. I happen to know it is the least used in Amtrak’s system, so that’s neat :(
Can you try doing New Jersey Turnpike sometime
Probably, but I’ve already done most of it on the 95 videos

I worked along US 90 in Tillman's Corner back in the summer of 2021....quite a few motels n eateries are here
In louisiana, the pearl river bridge is closed. Has been for a good while. To get to mississippi from 90 you have to go on I-10

US 90 is Like US 301 because it always stays next to a interstate
On the Mobile Bay Bridge, the reason why U.S. 90 and 98 are called the Battleship Pkwy is because off of the road is the battleship, the U.S.S Alabama as well as an additional submarine/helicopter nearby where I went to the one time I traveled to Alabama.
There’s a B-52 bomber in camo paint scheme parked there too!!
Does anyone know why in the South, many highways cross each other such as U.S. Route 11 meets 90 west of 45, and Interstate 85 ends west of Interstate 75.
I would like to see you do a A1A video

There's a Dryden and Marathon on Highway 17 in Ontario, Canada too. I think they are a tiny bit further apart. :D

The bridge in Jax is the Main Street bridge and 17 actually goes south and goes back towards 10.

Seguin is pronounced Se-geen. It's Spanish.
Okay...so you hit one of my pet peeves in Houston. I talk about this a lot on my videos. For some reason, US-90 was removed from the overhead signs. When I came to Houston back in 1980, US-90 was on all the overhead signs through downtown. TxDOT, in whatever plant they were smoking, decided that Houston drivers would be too dumb to figure out the difference between US-90 and Alternate US-90 (which comes into Houston over in Rosenberg. It makes it look like there's a gap with US-90 through Houston, as you have one end in Katy and the other end at the intersection of I-10 and I-610 on the east side of Houston. Apparently, US-90 isn't the only road TxDOT did this to: US-77 through Dallas (it multiplexes on I-35E) and US-67 when it enters Dallas, first on I-35E (muliplexed with US-77), then on I-30 East.
As for US-290: Technically US-290 ends at I-610. It doesn't officially connect back to I-10/US-90. However, when they rebuilt US-290 and I-610 a few years ago, someone in planning decided it would be nice to tie US-290 into the direct connect ramps that connect I-610 and I-10, so US-290 now has dedicated exits for I-10/US-90. As far as I'm concerned, that connects US-290 and US-90. It's just not official (although you will see a sign heading west on I-10/US-90 that connects to US-290 Express lanes).
Fun fact: On the east side of Houston, at the exits with North Wayside and McCarty, Alternate US-90 joins I-10/US-90 from North Wayside, goes under the railroad track bridge, and exits (although unsigned) onto McCarty. You can then take McCarty to I-610 where Alternate US-90 will end at the intersection with I-610 and Business US-90 (former alignment of US-90 before the Crosby Freeway was built.) That short distance is where an alternate route and a primary route overlap, although it isn't signed.
Another fun fact: That interchange you complained about with US-90 and the Sam Houston Tollway...yea, it's a bit oversized. The reason it is oversized is that there are plans to put flyover ramps from Sam Houston Tollway to US-90 in both directions. Not sure when that will happen, as sections of the Crosby Freeway aren't even built yet.
But that wasn't the fun fact I was getting to. The overpass that goes over Sam Houston Tollway and Uvalde (U-val-dee) road was built with the eastern part of the highway, opening in 1992. This overpass was built, but was blocked from traffic from 1992 to the construction and opening of the western section of the highway...in 2011, a total of 19 years.
Cool video, my mom and I are thinking about maybe going to the beach in the Gulfport-Biloxi area sometime this month, any recommendations for beaches to go to and places to eat at?
Oh yeah, the spots I mentioned in the vid for sure. I actually looked up the Air B&B I stayed at in 2018 when I made this vid but they aren't renting anymore. I was only there for a night, driving from Tampa to Austin.

Millions of beaches, beaches for me. Millions of beaches, beaches for free!
Good thing you're wearing a black and white striped shirt like a football referee, but the Chiefs have a 4-game winning streak this season without a first loss of the season. I hope they beat the Saints in The Big Easy for a 5th straight win.

What are your thoughts on the revival of the old Royals-Yankees rivalry from the 70s and early 80s? You think this ALDS will be a grueling 5 game war like it was back then?
Also I hope we can get a rematch of the 1984 ALCS between the Tigers and Royals but I’m not getting my hopes up. As a Tigers fan, I was wondering if you were still salty about 1984 or not really lol.
Either way, hope the Royals can defeat the Yankees again.
