Welcome to my UA-cam channel!!! A couple of years ago I started setting up a Poor Man's GMRS Repeater and it has worked pretty well. Me and a handful of my friends are going full-bore and setting up a true GMRS repeater. We are in Medina County, TX just West of San Antonio and we would like to share with you some of the things we are doing along with things we have already done that worked well and some things that may not have worked as well as we would have liked. This UA-cam thing is new to all of us, so bear with us while our first few videos will probably SUCK but we promise to get better as we learn the ropes! Your suggestions on content and feedback will be greatly appreciated along the way. If you are in the Medina County or far West San Antonio area, feel free to look me up on MyGMRS.com. My callsign is WRJC281. Join our Facebook Group MedinaCountyTexasGMRS for other news as well. We look forward to seeing you on the air or UA-cam!!!

UPDATE Radioddity GMRS DB40G Review
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 місяці тому
Ok... So I stand corrected on a few things BUT Radioddity should have included a better user manual and it would have helped me, or anybody buying this radio, figure out a few things. As I mentioned in my last video and in videos past, I don't like to have to sit and figure things out on my own nor do a lot of us have the time to do so. Take a look and let me know whatcha think! radioddity.refr...

GMRS Simplex Repeater on 100% Solar Power
Thx for this! it also seem very solid in build! 73 Levi in Sweden - one question: what is used as datacabel?
I got the iPhone version and I had trouble to find it, as not much information online or the information book. No links or anything. That what lets it down. Otherwise I’m like the radio. Bluetooth software doesn’t show what to use. But when you find it i found it interesting. I love technology and communication, pmr 446 work well. And I have a few different radio for if day out with my family. It’s a learning curve but it adds understanding as mostly same as other radio with some interesting features on it. Thanks for the video i enjoyed watching it.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Glad you like it!
Yagi directional antenna from Amazon there for the frequencies specific for gmrs they have different sizes that have different dbi ratings The bigger the antenna the more the DBI so the more energy you're putting towards range or focusing in one direction directional antennas of course you get more power more range out of them I have been able to hit repeaters 37 mi on the other side of Tuscaloosa County in West Alabama and it's very wooded here and hilly I have a 30 ft antenna outside and just say it works great I can pick up all over the county very large County at that I paid like 40 bucks for it it was the 7 dbi 400 to 470 MHz UHF Yagi directional antenna
I will be looking into those. Thanks for the feedback!
Got mine yesterday. Easy to program my local repeater. Seems like it's just what I need.
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
Does this radio need a license?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is it depends on what frequency you are talking on.
How hard is the test to get a license? $35 for 10 years is very affordable.
👍🔥🙏⚔️🗡🛡✝️🇬🇪🏴⛪️
Can you turn that awful ‘welcome tone’ off? It reminds me of an Instant Pot pressure cooker. 🤦♂️
🤣🤣🤣 so I tried and it didn't turn off.
Of course you can using the Retevis-software... Cheers from Germany.
I also didnthee rt99 setnthe rt99 up ant.60 foot up on my tower . Paired to the rt29 i now have a nearly 40 miles in any direction repeater.
Wow! That's awesome!
Those are great little radios. You would also find thee rt29 uhf radio gmrs programmed are 10 watts hooked to a mobile antenna does as good. For similar short distance
I will look those up next! Thanks!
Great video just ordered one, they have a ton of features for the price, and the are doing custom firmware for it,and make it even more better..
Awesome! I think you will really like it!
Is it hard to program for the GRMS channels though and to use a repeater? This I think is a business radio. ?? They usually are 16 channels in the UHF frequencies and sometimes you need a license. I would like to be able to use it for GRMS and it would be great to do so and be encrypted if needed. I don't know if that's allowed though so I probably wouldn't use it. Was it easy enough to use the software to program the GRMS channels? Thanks . Good video. ❤
It can definitely be programmed for GMRS. I would agree that it's probably designed more for business use but still a great radio if it fits your needs. It would be a great radio for the REACT Team here but we don't need the digital side.
I have mine setup as a base unit. I love the straight forward no bells and whistles operation. Does everything I need it to.
I think that would be a great use for it. I gave mine to my son... he's still trying to alpha tag all the freqs I programmed in for him. 😩
Interesting radio. We have a DMR (Ham) repeater in the GMRS club repeaters group here.
I like it bcs of all the zones/channels, high power and compact size.
That's a Hytera style antenna. I don't like how the shroud is flat along the socket end. If you thread that antenna on a UV5R there will be a gap. If you try to thread a UV5R antenna onto that radio the rubber shroud might get in the way because the radio's antenna socket is deeper. There's nothing wrong with that antenna, and spares are easy enough to get on Amazon or Ebay. They're just a bit oddball. Hang on to it, one day the FCC will wake up and allow digital on GMRS just like PMR446.
@greyshadow9498 YES, odd ball is the right word and it seems like a really good antenna and radio.
Rt68 works with rt86 ?
So yes, the 68s are frs so if you program the 86s properly they will communicate with each other.
So is it a LMR radio? Or just a digital amateur radio.
As stated in the video, I know nothing and have no use for the digital side of the radio since it can't be used on GMRS freqs. Sorry, I can't help with your question.
@@MCTGMRS78009 okay, let me rephrase my question. Can it be used on UHF business band or is it locked to amateur frequencies only. I'm guessing if you used it on gmrs, then at least three business band channels can be used on it.
@@2326TX the radio and box say 400 to 480 mhz.
How long does it take you to charge it? Are there simply problems with charging this radio? Привет с России ))
From a totally dead battery it takes about 4 hours to charge on the cradle.
I have a set of 6 of the regular RB17 for passing out when I do audio gigs and they are fantastic! I might give the RB17P a try to put in the kit to have a couple dual monitor radios that are simple to use.
For the price, you can't beat them.
What coax are you using from radio thru the duplexer to help with loss there ? That be where you lost watts !
Originally we were using 7/8" Heliax. Very low line loss.
Keep up the good work boss
Thank you sir! 😊
You stated your case well. I live in Baytiwn and enjoy a wide variety of two way radio cmmmunications. Your group sounds like what should be the standard for such groups. I haven't heard much about a group like yours in the Baytown area, yet am looking.
I know there's a big group in the Houston area and you have to pay a yearly fee. I'm in the area often, if I hear of anything I'll let you know.
Interesting. Yeah, it's okay, but I would probably go all the way and get a new Midland .. Just me though. ❤ Thanks for sharing.
Totally with you on that! 👍
Just order one this morning, should be here,,tomorrow, I will compare it with my baofeng 5G plus I really needed this video wouldn't know how to operate it with out you,,,thanks bud !!!
Thank you sir! Let us know what you think about it.
Thanks!
Anytime! Thanks for watching!
Thank You for the review. I bought a DB-40 G about a month ago. I was fairly happy with it. It is pretty basic radio for the money. It output just under 45 watts, which was unexpected. Now the bad. I made a rookie mistake. I had run a coax to the other side of the house for a future antenna. It was not terminated, not shorted, just open. I hooked up that coax instead of my coax hooked to my GMRS antenna (I have been using the radio for a month with zero problems). I keyed down for less than 3 seconds. Smoke pored out of the radio. I opened the radio and the main chip was melted. Any quality radio will fold back the power to save the radio when the antenna port is open. Not this radio. Again, the coax was open, not shorted...I checked. Bottom line, if you have any problem with your coax or antenna, this radio will roach itself. Not an ideal thing as it cooked itself so quickly. Even with a SWR meter in line, if there was a problem, your radio would be toast before you could hardly realize there was a problem. Radioddity promptly sent me another radio, so kutos to them. Be very careful and be sure to check your coax/antenna on a regular basis. For the asking price, this radio should have high SWR protection. It does not. Buyer beware. Given what happened to my radio, I would not buy one if I knew how easily this radio will fry itself.
I'm glad they took care of you and got you a replacement!
It's about $93 on the Retevis web site now. You can program it via the mic port.
looks like my Radioditty DB 20
Yes... exactly. Lol
Just ordered one of these and can't wait to try it I am from the UK and have a ham licence and use radios and walkie talkies all the time, love this hobbie. I have too many radios lol 😅😊😂 great review. I chosen this because of the display and hopefully for the long range.
These are great radios... simple, easy and plenty of power. Hope you enjoy them!
My 1st H3 went out in flames while charging, replacement radio doesn't transmit at all. TID refusing to send the replacement, advising me to put the battery of replacement radio to 1st radio (one that burned out in flames). Tragi-Comedy...
Seriously!? That's very disappointing to hear!
@@MCTGMRS78009 Indeed ! I was able to use it for one day on first charge, and second charge, battery charging controller circuit was a culprit of fire. Started to feel burning plastic smell after 20 minutes charging, I didn't know what is it, came back from outside, was walking my dog, started looking in the kitchen, around the stove, finally, I literally saw the radio burning. If I wasn't working from home that day, my house would be gone now. Insane.
lol just hook up an amp for a 50watt sms location to ping nearby APRS SMS integrated radios for your location in an emergency. I really believe they should add something similar to these types of radios for holding down an emergency button so that anyone nearby can get a constant pinging GPS location like VHF marine radios mayday feature.
That would definitely be a helpful feature!
Can i use my bafeng bf 1904 it is a 12 watt will it work on my radio
Yes but you will need to use medium or low power. Putting more than 5 watts into the amplifier will fry it
Hi can you tell me did this repeater work good on the amplifite
100%... it was kicking right under 40 watts with the amplifier ⚡️
Now 1 year later I saw this video, thank you It worked like a dream and I have my compass. 😉👍👍👍
Boom 💥! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
Can I just simply plug this into the accessory outlet (cigarette symbol) socket in my car? I don’t want to start with any wiring or fuse boxes in the car…
You can but i would not turn it on HIGH power or you'll start popping fuses.
If it's crap, why did you buy it?
Just to try it and compare... thanks for asking.
@@MCTGMRS78009 if you want your camera to focus you need to get anything with writing on it out of the frame.. Your coffee mug is getting the preferential treatment for focus because it has words on it.
I won't be moving my coffee cup. THANKS for the suggestion tho!
Just ordered an H3 for GMRS, and an H8 for amateur bands. Your walk-thru on using the app to program, and basic functions was logical and succinct. Excellent video, very helpful. You’re a cool guy in a very hot place. Best wishes.
Thanks for all those kind words! Please come back and comment on how you like them!
@@MCTGMRS78009 I certainly will. BTW, do you have a favorite or two GMRS antennas? I’m in Southern California with nothing but city…
Go look for the Wouxun high gain GMRS antenna on Amazon or buytwowayradios. I honestly think it's the best out there!!!
best uhf radios ul ever get ,,,and they sound a lot clear than that ,, ive had 32 miles radio to radio , works brilliantly with the boafeng uv13 pro v2 which kicks out 7.5watss
Agreed! These are good HTs.
Will this radio receive railroad communications?
Depends on the freqs they are using. Do you know what they are?
Hello there, good video. Does this radio have any voice prompts at all? Being blind, I am looking for a radio with voice prompts. Thanks.
Yes, voice prompts can be turned on and off thru the radios menu.
@@MCTGMRS78009 would you mind doing me a favor? Could you please see if the voice prompts will read the menu as you navigate down the menu? If you find that it just beeps, would you mind pressing enter on one of the options within the menu, to see if it will say the menu option? If you could do that, and tell me what you find, I would really appreciate it.
This isvmy 1st radio just got it off the charger trying to hear some traffic but can't hear anything
What frequencies are programed in it?
Subscribed. Thanks for a great review
Much appreciated and thanks for watching!
@@MCTGMRS78009 after seeing your review, I realized that I wanted something a little different. Went with the radioddity DB20-G. Do you have a video on that one? 73, KK6DKQ
Hello there. Nice video. Does this radio have voice prompts? In other words, does it talk when you press buttons? Thanks very much.
Yes it does... I believe it's menu option 11. Thanks for watching!
@@MCTGMRS78009 is that something you’d be willing to do a video on? To demonstrate its voice prompts? I definitely want to be sure, before purchasing the radio, and finding out that it doesn’t do what I was hoping it would do. Thanks. I’d like to see how deep into the menus it goes. Thanks.
I was gonna buy this radio for my Jeep, till I saw this video. I downloaded that joke of a manual, and that was a red flag and not being able to program extra channels was another red flag. I have the RA86, and really like it.
This was probably one of the most difficult radios to program. And YES, the RA86 is great if you want something simple and basic. THANKs for watching!!!
I recently installed it in my minivan. Consistently transmitting 45W on high power. Consistent 5W on low. I have it paired with a Nagoya UT-72G magnetic base getting 1.35 SWR out of the box. Not too hard to program with the mic. There is software and a programming cable, but the features are limited enough that it can be done without. Works well, transmits clearly. Mic has a good feel and weight. Onboard speaker a bit tinny but tolerable.
The radio seems to operate great... I'm just having a hard time getting past a few of the quirks I mentioned. Not sure I would spend almost 200 bucks for it either. THANKs for taking the time to watch and comment!!!
I am looking at this radio along with a few others to set one up as a base radio with that said in your honest opinion what would be the best base radio to purchase
That's tough to answer since there are so many different needs folks have. My favorite mobile is the Btech 50X3. If you needing power and are limited on space it's a good one.
@@MCTGMRS78009 I’m a Btech man myself and will probably end up going that route I just like to get other peoples opinions on different radios before settling on one. If I could afford to and thought my wife wouldn’t kill me I would have one of everything hahahaha thanks for your reply
Thanks for the video. Do you know if this can be used with a Bluetooth headset? Many thanks
I was not able to get it to connect to the Bluetooth mic I had at the time.
Mine came with backlit buttons on the mic. Still not impressed though...
Yours must be brighter than the one I got. It's still in the box in the shack. 😫
Can u get the police on that raido?¿
Depends... most agencies are now P25 compliant, so nothing here local.
@@MCTGMRS78009 k thanks
Just like the rest, horrible front end, radios desense each other. Horrible quality, horrible product.
Sorry you feel that way. For folks on a budget, I think these radios are a GREAT option.
Which radio would you pick, The H3 or a Quensheng k5.
After using the H3 for the last 3 weeks or so, I would have to pick it.
My 1st H3 went out in flames while charging, replacement radio doesn't transmit at all. TID refusing to send the replacement, advising me to put the battery of replacement radio to 1st radio (one that burned out in flames LOL). Tragi-Comedy...
