I'm just a normal man, just an innocent man, trying to grow tropical plants and cacti in a grim northern English hellscape.

What should I do with my gunnera now that it has been banned in the UK? (giant rhubarb)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
Although gunnera tinctoria has been banned for a number of years due to its invasive nature in certain parts of the UK, most nurseries circumvented this by simply listing all gunnera as the hitherto perfectly legal gunnera manicata. However, since scientists discovered that gunnera manicata is actually a hybrid of both manicata and tinctoria (known as gunnera cryptica), it has left both species...

I found these giant agaves growing by the beach!
Hi
😎👍 how was your holiday?
Have look at foras if you want something different to view
Nice to see what can be achieved up in God’s own country. Couldn’t help noticing your bag of Desert Substrate. I’ve experimented with this product this year. I’m still unsure, I’ve created some “habitat” pots that have done ok with it & others where I’ve had to remove it. What are your thoughts? I think it’s been better where I’ve mixed it with very chunky stone chippings. Ta
Agree with u on the washingtonia robusta, not had a great deal of luck with them do fine during summer here on the west coast of Scotland, but not so good if u get a really harsh winter! Dont get me wrong if they do get fried with the cold, if they've still got a bit of green in the growing point they will push out new growth rapidly once temps warm up! 🚀 just went and bought approximately a 5ft one from B&M was originally £50 but priced down to a tenner as a few dead fronds on it, plenty of green in centre & really just needed repotted! So result 😁🤞
I agree the damage to the Opuntia is from slugs or snails. They love soft new pads. As far as your Y rostrata, it looks in very poor shape. The central growing point should be producing all blue new leaves. These are very adaptable and do not need a pure gravel growing medium. I hope that its roots are able to reach the native soil underneath. These, as well as the agaves come from areas that experience summer monsoons. So they do best with water in summer and it helps their growth. I would leave it alone and make sure it gets some water. Good luck.
Great looking tour. Superb job 👏👏
Re Yucca Rostrata. Mine used to do the same with the foliage when they were potted. When I planted it into a deep raised bed with gritty soil this all resolved. I assumed it was due to the suboptimal drainage in the pot. I don't cover the two yucca rostratas in winter yet despite this remains decent with little damage. I suspect the plant is recovering from the poor conditions it was in previously prior to you planting it in the well drained bed. Hopefully this will resolve in time🤞
Thanks mate 🙂👍
Hello - Really love your garden. Is there any reason why your cascade is not running? Would love to see the jungle stream and water fall in action one day 🙂
Thank you 🙏 the jungle stream does work but I don't turn it on for videos as it makes too much background noise and I only use my phone mic for audio 😄 I'll include it working in the next update vid.
Slug damage
They're relentless, despite the beer traps!
@@greatnorthernexotic I know same here I use scissors ✂️
Nice 👍
Thank you ji 🙏
Looking better and better every video
Thank you 😄
I've just measured mine and they are 13 feet plus. It's a group of six, one flowering. I'm by the sea in south wales and don't protect them at all. I find that the big stems can survive really low temperature, so once they get to a certain size they are bomb-roof.
Hi there, I love this and would love to try and recreate it myself. Is this one piece of rock or multiple stuck together? If so, how did you stick them together 😊
🇧🇷🌵🌴☀️
😎
I got rid of the greenhouse and just use a couple of coldframes. I close them down and throw an old duvet over in the evening
Actually only northern varieties can self fertilize. All the southern and northern varieties very close to the southern varieties can’t self pollinate.
They've been growing at Caerhays Estate for a hundred years and haven't spread at all. It's all bullshit.
It's not illegal if you already have them planted in the ground.
Do you have drainage holes in the container for the seedlings?
No
Add some miracle grow.
Great information. I’ll see how I can incorporate in my Zone 9B Houston garden. Happy gardening.
Love the vid and your garden but PLEASE remove the plinky plonky music it's annoying and makes it hard to hear you thanks
❤❤❤beautiful gadern
Love the mind your own business on the rocks! Looking absolutely stunning, well done.
Beautiful looking garden, its the bees knees.
Looking amazing bro, it will all get some good growth going now the temps picking up
Finally some heat to go with the rain. 👌👌
Great Garden and a lovely selection of plants. Is your garden in full sun
Great video! Looks an amazing place. Will be visiting next weekend. Do they give you a box when you enter? Just wondering as I'll be getting there by bus and working out how I can carry stuff back home.
Yeah they have plenty of cardboard boxes and newspaper to pack your purchases - these seems to be standard practice at cactus nurseries and sales. By the way, they are in the middle of a retirement sale with everything discounted so you should pick up some bargains - let me know what you get!
@@greatnorthernexotic Thanks for the reply and will do!
@@greatnorthernexotic I got these plants. Talk about kid in a sweet shop! Mammillaria guelzowiana v. robustior. Gymnocalycium achirasense v. orientale. Lobivia hybrid 'carnival'. Denmoza rhodacantha. Thelocactus conothelos v. aurantiacus. Submatucana aureiflora. Rebutia krainziano and Astrophytum capricorne v. aurea. Could have got a lot more but would have needed a greenhouse extension! Do you think the nursery is going to close down now? Such a shame if they do. The old chap looked a bit frail, but full of knowledge.
@@melian2003 nice haul! The original plan was to close the business in September but there are rumours they might have a buyer. They were on Gardeners World this week!
Amazon and ebay still for sale
I imagine that'll gradually die down over the next year or so.
Nothing but money hungry sellers in the states. Unfortunately I just love to give them my money. The way I see it, I can go out and find money everyday, but it’s much harder to find nice copiapoa.
😂 it's a great way of looking at it. Unfortunately I really love the same slow-growing, expensive genera as everyone else!
Beautiful cacti and succulents. I just went to the local show & sale as well. Which camera and lens were you using?
The Fresno CSS show looks great - I'm jealous of the vast array of ceramics available over there - we don't have anything like that here in the UK. I shoot and edit everything on my phone, currently a Pixel 8.
The actual fig fruit is an inverted flower, so it flowers on the inside of the fig if that makes sense?
WOW so many BEAUTIFUL Cacti and Succulents at the Bradford Show and many old rare beauties, those Aztekiums are WOWSERS, and your 20 headed big Copiapoa is absolutely GORGEOUS and congratulations on your getting 2nd and 3rd place on your beautiful plants, thanks so much for sharing the fantastic Bradford Cactus & Succulent Show with us and sending lots of plant power from Ireland XXXX <3
Thanks Lyn - that big old aztekium ritterii that won Best Cactus was David Quail's - it was a beauty! Really pleased with my 2nd and 3rd places though - plus I won the public vote for a plant in an unusual container! 😄
What does staging mean?
Staging is when you consider the combination of plant, pot and top dressing to create something that looks pleasing on the eye.
@@greatnorthernexotic thanks
I live in south texas where hard freezes are rare ! We had the feb 2021 polar vortex and it got down to 11 degrees farenheit 2 nights and not above freezing fo 4 days ! I lost palms that were 50 ft high and shrubs that were supposed to be able to withstand those temperatures, and my musa basjoo and musa blue bananas froze to the ground! 3 years later , its like it never happened. I think if you have them in light shade thinking they are protected , you dont allow the sun to warm up the soil and thats what causes rot. The fact that they were in full son is , in my opinion, what saved them . Before that they with stood 29 to 32 no problem
Superb job. Garden looking very exotic now and filling up nicely. Definitely male trachy👍
Interesting. Can I constructively suggest that you pan around far more slowly? The overall effect of otherwise makes the viewer nauseous which I'm very sure is not your intention.
Noted! 😃
I did this method with my lophophora williamsii on 7/26/2023 which are running near to a year in their incubator container! This method worked so amazing. I got 25 to 30 good sized heads that’s popped up so I’m so content! Going to be replanting them this weekend !
Great news - congrats! 👏
@@greatnorthernexotic thank you! I saw the video pop up again and I just had to give an update because this is the video that helped me!
Please film slower, a lot slower!
Noted! 😄 I'm conscious of going to slow and boring people will slow it down in the next one.
Do your cacti stay in the greenhouse during winter too?
Yeah they're in all year round, with heat in winter to keep them frost free.
Love what you've created, wow, well done, Thanks for sharing. Great transformation, feeling inspired. How big is your area? Welcome your thoughts on narrow small garden circa 6m across, 8 m wide., plus a small side return 1.25 m wide x 4m . Zero privacy on all sides, that's Victorian terraced gardens for you.😀 Sun most of day, shady bottom due to 6 foot boundary wall.
My garden is 14m long by 10m wide. I'd pick a sunny evening spot for your seating area, then sit and look in which directions are you overlooked in that spot, then plant forntall dappled shade in those spots.
Thank-you for this
Looking lush. With regards to tropical gardens being good for wildlife I couldn’t agree more. My garden is full of and I feel that just adds to it. I even get a couple of bats every evening constantly flying around clearing up all the bugs. Trachy flowers. Yellow and drooping down are male. Lime- yellow and upright are female.
Beautiful garden. Thanks for the tour. Regarding figs, what we recognise as the fruit, is actually a flower. More specifically, a set of inverted flowers.
Looking great bro 😁 everything looking happy and healthy 👍🏻
Thanks mate 😁
Looks great. What roof have you got over your seating area.
Thanks! Temporarily it's the £10 clear tarpaulin that I had over my arid bed in winter, but it'll be replaced with corrugated plastic roofing shortly.
Looks great! Lots of growth!
Cheers - best time of year for dramatic changes! 😄
Looking great. Enjoying as we speak
Ps. The fig fruit is actually it's flower I'm told.
Thanks Mark!
Illegal huh? How utterly ridiculous
Isn't it! These are fantastic plants which are only invasive in small pockets of western Scotland. For us gardeners, this is just a wonderful specimen plant.
Quality video and very informative. As another commenter said it is inspiring to see videos like this.
Thank you. I love seeing how other channels are growing and earning.
How many minutes do you advise the videos should atleast be. So if I have like hundreds of videos each with minimum of 1 minute and maximum of 3 minutes, will my revenue be less? And do u get more if u have more subscribers or not
UA-cam pays per ad view. Videos under 8 minutes long will only show an ad or ads before it. If you make it over 8 minutes, have the option to add another ad in the middle that's why you'll see a lot of videos just over 8 minutes long. Number of subs makes no difference to revenue, only view count. And shorts pay almost nothing.
It seems crazy to ban them, my manicata has been in the ground near my pond for at least 15 years and hasn't been invasive at all
Agreed!
