Classic Mini with a Broken Clutch - Limit 55 E17
My first car. 1956
I had an Austin America(😂😂 i know) but the same thing sort of happened to me! I hit the flywheel side of the motor on a rock which broke a motor mount but unknown to me it slightly bent the flywheel and that wore away the main seal until it leaked so bad ( a quart a day) and went through 3 starters 😢
When you were talking about how you didn't get the flywheel machined even though you had highlighter the instruction, it made me think of a gaff I had several years ago. I have seen you working late at night and when it has been roasting hot. I goofed when I was replacing the exhaust/intake manifold gasket. I have a brake booster on my 1977 MGB and when I added the HS-4 carbs I had to purchase K&N filters that were conical in shape. My mistake was placing the mounting disc on the rear carb and I couldn't get the filter to fit. I just stood there glaring at it wondering why it fit before but not now.I had put the disc on upside down. It was 90 plus degrees outside and over a hundred in the garage. Brain fog had struck. Unfortunately your problem turned out to be far more involved than mine.
@@robertdavidson3090 we make the best decisions we can in the moment :-) for better or worse. Thanks for the note!

I owned two British 50s cars. They soon got to the point where I was pushing them more that they were pushing me. Nature always sides with the undesired result. What you wish to seal will drain. What you wish to drain will seal.
I feel your pain! 6 remove and install cycles on my Triumph TR7 twin carburetors before they were right. All part of the experience I guess😂

I noticed that the head gasket went over the back water jacket instead of around it. Could that be the cause of your leak? Maybe a little trimming of the head gasket there?
@@TannyOHaley hey Tanny anything is possible I suppose, I’ll have to take note of this when fitting the new one. Concerned about making adjustments to the gasket when they should sit so flush though! Hope you are keeping well
@ Got out of the hospital a week ago where I almost died. I'm doing a lot better. Thank you.
Has the ship sailed on reverting back to the original scroll 'seal' ? Its not ideal but original.
@@markm781 the thing is the grooves in my crank are worn. I’m debating about doing this however. It is an option. Just feel I’ve gone through so much to make this work, may as well try with the correct seal.
I see. I hope it gets sorted, it seems the upgraded seal either works ok or they really leak, and such a pain to re-address. Hang in there!
@@limit55 May be time to grit teeth and, if the crank is in otherwise good shape, get it flame welded and re machined. ua-cam.com/video/FLYdhfgF6Pg/v-deo.htmlsi=1aVZ5i6ikpXKBnCE "Been there, done that, got the tee shirt." Ran VWs in the late '70's to early '80s in SOCAL. The school of hard knocks is rarely cheap. Hang in there. Fatigue is a compounding factor most don't take into account. Almost inevitable when working, having a house own you, valuable relationships to maintain, yada, yada. Sometimes just need to say, as the Jewish sage put it, "Sufficient unto the day is the evil there of." and just go to bed. I love watching you work on this. One of my favorite young adult books was "The Red Car" still on the shelf. But at 67 decided it's time to let some dreams go. Also, if you do have to repeat the head gasket fix, consider using Loctite 545 Pneumatic/Hydraulic Pipe Thread Sealant. Technically for fine threads, it may still work better than the silicone. Best of luck.
Love your videos! I have inherited my dad's '49 MGTC that hasn't run in 20 years and I will likely be going through similar challenges when I have the time (hopefully not too long from now)... These videos are so great and will provide much help when that time comes. Thanks.

I have had high idle issues on several old su:s, its really annoying and drives you mad. Usually new butterflys and springs solve the problems. A airflow meter is a sheap and wery useful tool when you hopefully soon reach that stage. 😃

Have you backed out the idle screw on both SU carbs ? Does the throttle cable fully release at idle ? When you push the pin up on the bottom of each SU carb, does the idle rise & stay high (it's set too rich) ? Turn the nut on the bottom in to lean out the fuel & try the pin again. The idle should rise momentarily, then go back to normal idle, if set correctly.
@@brucefrohn9834 don’t believe my HS2’s have the tickle pins, my MGA HS4’s do have them though. Good call though, may be too Rich. Once I get the oil pressure reading under control, I’ll be able to better assess

Fun to drive, required quite a bit of maintenance. A friend of mine, years ago, modified an A, stuck in a buick V6, it took some doing but in our day we did a lot of mods on our cars, the modified A was a mini beast, a real little beast, while it lasted. Fun times...
"säkerhet snabbt" (Safety Fast--- in Swedish). Just a thought regarding high idle on the TC--- check the throttle butterflys are in place correctly. They are champhered to fit in one way only .There should be very small edges gap around the butterflys when the motor isnt running. (all at rest position.) or ---- check the fast idle screw for the choke isnt pushing up the "fast idle/ throttle" lever too far ---- that will increase the engine speed. There must be a small clearance when the choke is at normal "off" position. i use 25 thou of an inch gap as a initial adjustment then pull on the choke and see if the mechanism lifts the fast idle/throttle lever sufficiently to start the car and run ok with choke . Also check there is a small free movement before the choke knob starts to move the mechanisms. Best wishes and carry on the good work! I am really pleased you are progressing with the TC craig MGB E Type MG TD
