Planting Grape Vines On The Allotment

As we move more and more to perennial plantings, I've decided to add grapes to our plot. To go alongside the raspberries, current bushes, rhubarb and many more. When you have a large area to plant, having perennials to come back each year with very little maintenance is a win win in my eyes. You can also donate directly to my Kofi page even small donations help towards future videos. Thanks for...

Creating A Wildlife Pond On Our Allotment To Battle Slugs.
Переглядів 609Місяць тому
A wildlife pond really can bring a vast amount of extra wildlife into your growing space. from frogs, toads, newts and dragonfly's. Many love a juicy slug. With the wetter weather slugs and snails are decimating crops. Time to take the gloves off, I'm battling slugs with nature.
Planting Out LOTS Of Squash Vegetable Plants On Our Allotment.

Time to plant the squashes. I've held off because of all the rain, slugs and snails. But it needs doing. Creating several beds just for squashes, will give some good cover against weeds as they grow. Plus they taste great too.

Dealing With Weeds On Our UK Allotment

Weeds are a part of growing. They arrive on mass, spread everywhere, and become a pain to remove. No dig offers an easier weeding experience. But there's still lots of weeding to do. Invasive weeds can do a lot of damage to our crops. It's best to deal with them as soon as they pop up.

Your melons are not Amir.
Well done. A great video and a great harvest. 👍
Great cabbage 😍
They have been so tasty
What variety of spring greens were they? Thinking I may go the same root as you
It was verve F1. Seems to have done well 👌
Silver lining brassicas love the cool and damp weather 👍. Love the sprout tops and savoy too 🥬, yes I really enjoy leaf cabbage too like lettuces you can lick as many leaves as needed. Last year my carrots were eaten by caterpillars not slugs 😢 so I mostly do them in raised covered boxes. Some amazing harvests Helen good job, have a super week, Ali 🌞🥵36c 🇨🇦
Thanks Ali ❤️
Them demon chilies i grew last year that got pollinated with them reapers, I got 4 baby reaper demons growing, Them at work said they will never eat one of them again, Lmao they said they could eat any of them hot chilies 😁😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@oddsocksgrowing I will admit as soon as you bite one you will be in pain for 30 mins, When i grew them i did not know they had been pollinated by the reapers They are nasty things.
See if I grew them that hot. I wouldn't eat them. Always loved the flavour, but not excess heat... it kills the pallet. 😆.
@@oddsocksgrowing Im growing them for the chilli challenge but most of them have dropped out the chickens :)
@@oddsocksgrowing Chili challenge at work.
I want see you eat some of them chilies Ill send you some of mine they are hot hot hot, They burn twice 🌶🥵🌶
😂. I had one of the Caribbean mixes.... I bit the end it was so sweet like a red pepper... gave it to my husband who took a big bite ..... it was so much hotter further up the chilli 😂😂. Burnt his tongue and mouth 🤣🤣. I didn't believe him so took a bit on my tongue.... lots and lots of milk 🤣🤣🤣. To be honest, we're growing for taste, not heat. But these were hot. It's not as hot as alot but it took me by suprise 😂.
@@oddsocksgrowing Lmao
Thank you for another great vlog. You are one of my favourite vloggers, down to earth gardening, warts and all.
Thank you. 🥲. I'm privileged to have some great followers ❤️. Plenty of warts on my plot 😂
Caigua (kai-wa) is great. Climbing vine with small fruits that taste like cucumber capsicum. Can eat cooked or raw. Pollinators love it, no pests, quick growing. From South America.
Thanks for the suggestion. Can that be grown outdoors in the uk? Or better in a polytunnel or greenhouse?
@@oddsocksgrowingNot sure. I grow from seed in Wellington, New Zealand, in a temperate climate. Winter coldest about 0 C, summer hottest 35 C, average across year 7-20 C. Good luck!
Honestly my chillis have hardly grown this year.. Ughh Manchester is so wet and gloomy this year.
There has been a serious lack of sunlight this year.. if you can over winter you chillies, then I would. It will give you a head start for next year. But there is still time for some good growth 👍
Give it a few years in there and it will be good with all of that new organic matter. Chilli's and pepper don't tend to like too much water but i guess with the heat as well, it might have stressed them into flowering early. Got some great harvests there though! Can't wait to see what happens with the taro! Take care,
They were flowering before they even went into the polytunnel 😆. They germinated super quick. 3 days from sowing this year. They then grew very quickly and flowered way before I got them out. Never had a year with the chillies growing so quick. Caught me off guard. Even had some chillies on them before I planted then out 😂.
@@oddsocksgrowing I up potted one of our Thai dragon chilli's for indoor growing and it just wilted and died. It was one of our best ones too. Well gutted. I did a Jan sow and they germinated in 7 days but then got so high and all but 1 died. Only one red hot chilli pepper survived but is small after re-sowing them all. Have 3 golden wonder peppers growing outside and one spare. I gave a lot of the Thai chilli's away and had one spare that was going to be given away but it didn't happen. I have dumped the dead plant in the council food waste bin and going to bake the soil and clean the new pot out properly and up pot the spare. These were saved seeds from 3 year old chilli plants. I would take the win and buy a lottery ticket! lol Lots of super wins and loses this year. Have a great week!
wow my chillies just started flowering... very late
To be honest, it's probably about right. Mine were just very early.. too early, really.
😢 shame Helen but we know you’ll sort it 👍. Yikes 🥵🥵 that’s crazy, great in the winter for growing not so good in heat of summer. Have a super week Helen keep chill, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
Thanks Ali ❤️.
Helen Tree cabbage is a perennial but slugs and snails and white butterfly love them as iv found out this year, Its a nightmare trying get all the caterpillars of them.
I actually did sow some this year. I had a few seeds I was given. Slugs ate them all 🤣. But I shall try again
@@oddsocksgrowing Once you got them growing put them in the greenhouse or polytunnel till the autumn and keep them off the ground
Experiment with some cover crops
Good idea 💡
Oh lord your skies look like our up til today now it back to 28c 🥵. WOW Helen your sweet peas 🫛 look amazing 😻. 😂😂 I don’t have a lot of raspberry bushes so most never make it inside. I agree it’s a balance of what is fun to grow and what works. I need to make a list of what I’m not doing again. Poor plants don’t what day it is so everything is bolting. A fab update Helen, have a wonderful weekend, Ali ☔️🌞🇨🇦
Yea ill make a list myself.. then loose said list, then rewrite a new list, miss items off of the list, then loose that list, only to find the old list, to loose that list again 😭😂🤣🤣. It has been pants for certain plants this year. But the seeds shall hit the ground, and what will be will be. 😆
What about artisjokes?
I have jerusalem artichoke already in the ground. Globe artichoke I'm not a massive fan of.
I'd sow more carrots
I’m sowing some this week 👍👍
I've got two sowings in. I'll also do another 2. 👍
OMG !!!! All your sweet peas look absolutely stunning 😍 ❤ You could try Celtuse/ Asparagus lettuce which is grown for the stem that will be prepared like Asparagus. You also can harvest the leaves for salads. It is not very well known in the UK but grown a lot on the continent.
The sweetpeas really are great this year 😍. Really pleased with them. Never heard of celtuse 🤔. I'll have a look at that. Thanks for then input 👍
You have taken it so well,I would have been in tears 😢
It's just one of those things. Sometimes we have no control. 😳
I spent such a lot of time pulling those damn mares tails😮
It's the never ending job 😭😂
😂😂 I knew you were comedic but this even though tragic was you keeping your sense of humour. Because if we didn’t we’d cry 😢. Trials and tribulation this year for everyone. My beans are small my tomatoes are eaten but hey no I got a fab few news spuds. Keep smiling Helen it’s part of what makes you who you are ❤, Ali 🌞🇨🇦
That's it isn't it. Keep our heads up and a sense of humour 😂. It's not all perfect greens ☺️
The trials and tribulations of being a horticulturalist in Britain are so real. When is it not too wet, too dry, too warm or too cold. I put off sowing most things this year due to the late spring/summer. We had 5 mins of hale stones that dashed my lettuce to pieces last week, My toms are doing well as are my tree raspberries and cherry trees. At least your sweet peas look healthy! I love the scent they give off. Hope the rest of the season goes better for you!
Me too love sweet peas. Yup uk weather can be so temperamental 😩. But its good that certain fruits and veg are doing great 👍 so that's always a bonus
I know the pain of losing hours and hours of gardening work. ☹ I hope you can work things out.
Fingers crossed, we will get some crops. To be honest, it is frustrating. But it happens. Sometimes, we win. Sometimes, we lose
I can see you are trying to be philosophical about the damage done by slugs and snails but I can also see how it has upset you as it has done to all growers. I just hope we have some drier weather to save all our crops and your lovely plot starts bursting with food to repay all your hard work.
I'm sure it will get better. I think we just have to keep our chins up and keep going. Some years are better then others.
Its been a very strange year and all this slug damage is since they banned slug pellets and combined with the mild winter there population has exploded ! I feel for you 😔
No, its because of the chemtrails...
The wet weather certainly hasn't helped with the slug population this year. That's for certain
Hi there I'm Bonita from Cape Town South Africa for snails and slugs you need to put a bowl with beer in your garden they will drown in it
Yup. I use beer traps on my plot too. Just alot of slugs and snails this year
Really sorry to see they have done that much damage. I can understand how much it is both frustrating and heartbreaking for you. I have seen a lot of people talk about squash and cucurbits either not germinating or being eaten. I have also re-sown many a times to get what we have in the beds. Once out, one of the cucumbers died in the cold snap and one courgette had been eaten in the garden. I just up potted a Thai dragon that i keep indoors and now it is all droopy and at deaths door! I am just a bit worried as the chilli plants these are from and i over wintered for 3 yrs have died. Only one of our red hot chilli peppers have survived. I have put it on the morning sun side for now and not going to water it for a bit. Our overwinter ginger plants have been eaten since planting out so i need to dig it up to either save or use. Given up on lemon grass this season. Our hard neck garlic is looking like spring onions but i pulled up the soft neck we sowed from saved cloves and it is mostly ok but small. The sprout have aphids but i haven't seen any cabbage moths this year nor wasps. No butterflies. We had a few ladybirds and bees but that was before the cold snap in June. It's like we are a month late on things this year. We don't grow broad beans but are you not meant to remove the tops in May or something before the blackfly gets in? Do they taste better home grown? I have never been a fan, like with butter beans. Jane's Growing Garden learnt that if the beans are pointing down that they are ready to harvest. Does airing them out of foliage and beans at the bottom help out with the slugs? Our strawberries and raspberries are doing well this year. Since we saw a half eaten strawberry, we have been more vigilant about picking the fruit. We have some blue tits make a nest in our old cold frame pipe hole and can hear the babies. I think we had rats or maybe a squrrel, which is rare make hole tunnels around the sprouts but i think we have scared them off now. Something is still digging in the hanging baskets. Can birds do this like a dust bath? I don't like to get apolitical but the middle east have admitted to cloud seeding now and i feel somewhat annoyed that there isn't a class action going on as surely that is technically classed as bio warfare. It would have conveyed better if you put your segment from the end in the middle before going on to the good stuff going on in the garden as it could be construed as everything has failed imo. Not a nag but would have flowed better and lifted the mood of the negatives. Anyway, take care and love to see an update on the things you are sowing and a weeding update. You got this!
You've obviously been busy. As for the broad beans we no longer take the tops off in general. It never really worked in all the years of me doing it. So this year I'm not. Kind of using it to boost the ladybird population 👍
@@oddsocksgrowing Ah ok fair enough. Yes we need more ladybirds.
Barking mad isn it? Some things that we've tried to grow over the last 3-4 seasons that just havent taken that this year have gone BANG and gone racing away - petit pois, carrots, garlic, onion sets, spuds - and yet others that we've assiduously learned about and look after.... squashes, cucumbers, fennel, some of the brassicas - either stunted, or the seeds didnt take or the bloody slugs had them. And with the tomatoes, boatloads of greenery but not that much fruit. Its mystifying. I wouldnt mind so much if I could put it down to "well, i screwed that up because I did/didnt do x/y/z", but thats not always the case. Drives me mad it does, but just makes me more determined to push on and go for it.
That's the attitude to have. Just keep going. For the warmer loving crops, we have not had a great start. If we get a longer summer, then hopefully, it will all turn out well. But as for the slugs 😭.
I feel you. I gathered around 2 thousand slugs over the last 2 months.Next Year I will test out nematodes: I only won the battle, because its my garden and not an alotment and I was out every time when it rained and also in the evenings doing rounds like in one of those old arcarde computer games farming enemy invader spots. When I was closing my eyes I saw those brown naked slugs.
😂 I feel you. It really does get like that. I removed quiet a few each night. When I went down to check the chickens. But fair play to you on removing so many yourself. Hats off to you 👏
GRAPES!!!!🍇
I have one in my garden also. The little red grapes are sweet. Great to sit under in hot weather. Well!! Here's hoping 😅.
I do miss sitting under the vine in the garden. I don't do hot weather well. 😂
Our neighbor has a grape vine in their hedge so they give us grapes each year but they are tiny. Assuming they don’t tend it much 🤷♀️. Hope your new one does well, hope it also warm up for you, Ali 🌧️🌞🇨🇦
Thanks, Ali. Same as the one in my garden that I use for shade. Fingers crossed, I can get some half decent size. 👌
Thank you but bending over and digging in trainers ouch look after your self happy gardening Richardx
If I was digging bigger holes I would be wearing my tough old boots. ☺️. They serve me well.
@@oddsocksgrowing hi ive worked for the NHS for many years now seen some gardening related accident that could have been avoided with the correct lifting and ppe not having a go im just concerned about health and safety I don't want to see you in a and e as always happy gardening Richardx
Many thanks for sharing your pond construction. I love it ❤
I think im going get a sunbed just for me so i can get a tan 🙂😁😃
😆😂
The weather has been very bad and Thursday morning at about 02:30 am i was putting fleece over all my chillies and toms in my greenhouse.
It's not the greatest is it. 😒 between slugs and snails and the weather its a tough year
Glad you’re feeling better, missed your videos. Ive had melons, cucs, chillies and luffas completely wiped out by slugs in my poly tunnel; Outside isn’t doing much better either! 😅 My Jerusalem artichokes are doing really well though 😊
Thank you. Funnily enough, my jerusalem artichokes are doing well, too 😅. The slugs have had a real feast this year.
slugs have been driving us mad this year. Brassicas, Kale, Chard, even spud leaves, all have been attacked by the damn things.
Yup not been the greatest growing year so far. Eventually they will reduce. Hopefully 😵💫
Glad you’re feeling better Helen. It is cold again here and raining on and off 🤦♀️ of course it is because we are going in a camping trip. 😮😮 2 degrees in June is insane here lowest was around 7c so peas it is 🤭. Have a great weekend and hope it warms up, Ali 🌦️🌞🇨🇦
Love camping. I'm sure it will be fantastic 👍. Yup weather really sucks. But we make do 😊
We all really need the sun and some higher temperatures 🤞🏼 Here, in Holland, it's awful cold and my pepper and tomato plants are less smaller than yours. Let's hope it's going to be warmer the next weeks.
Fingers crossed 🤞. You never know we may just get a longer summer 🤣
I purchased 6 different types of melon seed this year hoping to grow them. I held off sowing till I knew there was an extended period of warmth but unfortunately that warm spell still hasnt come so it looks as though melons are off the list for me this year. How are yours coming along? Good I hope!.
That's the thing with melons. They need warmth but also a longer growing season then other warm loving crops. Mine are growing ok bigger then when I planted them. Which is good considering the weather of late
@@oddsocksgrowing I cracked and sowed some Petit Gris De Rennes yesterday. Probably a bit too late in the season so will have to go under cover and fingers crossed we have a warm sept/october.
Hey there, was seeking reassurance was doing ok with my wildlife pond at allotment. Thanks. Yes, it has been a major point to have added this. The entire site. Is home to newts slowworms lizards, I even have glow in the dark centipedes,! And my lonely male frog finally has a mate in my pond. So I am sure there’s a battle between the newts and the frogs, toads but at least I have given them a fair battle field :-) may creative force of new life begin!
That sounds a wonderful area 😍. Your very lucky. Keep doing what you are doing ❤️
So many sparrows!!! Ask them to help Out…
They are already helping by eating the lettuces.... 😩
SLUGS!!!! 🐌

Great idea, looks like you did a good job.
It looks great & didn't cost too much xx
Nope. Didn't want to spend alot at all. Defeats the allotment spirt. ☺️
We have huge ponds next door and behind us but I am still going to use beer traps and cinnamon around plants 🤞🤞. Oh lord it took me 3 years to get rid of creeping Jenny. Have a great week Helen, Ali 🌧️🌧️🌧️🇨🇦
Yup creeping jenny is a giant 💩 🤣. But I'll see how I can cope with containing it. Beer traps are working for us. But the constant downpours just keep diluting it 🤣. I mean who enjoys light beer 😂. Have a good one Ali 👍
@@oddsocksgrowing I make covers with margarine containers just cut bits into the side and put a rock on top
What a fabulous pond!
Thanks. Hopefully it will grow in well.
Will introduce insects, but slugs may creep into your greenhouse underground as they only come out at night.
They get in there easily enough already 😂. It's just a bad year for them
