Ride from the mouth of the Solco di Equi Terme up to the private quarry, past deep ravines and tunnels carved right through the rock. The unpaved road are sketchy as they gravelly rubble is very slippery. The water crossing on my way back out of the canyon was cool but, even as I was approaching it, I already know it was a bad idea, as the wet marble was sure to be insanely slippery; and so it ...

Route diary from Croce di Brancoli to the Parco delle Pizzorne in Lucca, Tuscany. Unabridged except for stops and camera pauses. It's 99% off road. In places, it's rocky and steep, but of course the camera flattens the elevation changes and UA-cam compression algorithm ruins the original 4K quality to the point that you can't perceive how large some of the rocks actually are. 😄 Doing great, thanks for asking! Just installed the latest accessory, Garmin Zumo XT2: I was tired of using the iPhone as navigation + pictures only to have it either overheat and/or run out of batteries. Very happy with the install, looks like a second monitor, same size as the dashboard screen below. Plus navigation options are at another level, full customization, info and control. Now I can use the phone to take quick pictures of the bike and scenery, with plenty of batteries. My Michelin Anakee Wild tires perform great on dirt, but they might run down pretty quickly on asphalt, I think I'll be replacing at around 7K Km. Not great, not bad either... I can live with that. I'm dying to try the Motoz Tractionator Ralz, but they're not exactly easy to find, or legal, here in Italy. So I might just keep replacing my rear Anakee when needed. I'll definitely never go back to the Pirelli Scorpion STR; spectacular on pavement, but rubbish on dirt. What about you? I've noticed that you haven't posted as much 901 content as you used to... having too much fun on the enduro bike? 😆

      Money well spent, if you're oriented on mostly road and some easy dirt with small rocks; anything harder and you'll want to have a larger front tire, ideally 21 inches or at least 19. I do not regret buying it, I had a great time with the mighty X-ADV. I'm happy to have changed it for a Norden, because I like to spend most of my time off road, otherwise there's no other bike as versatile as this!

      Thank you for your comment. I'm with you, and everyone else suggesting the same thing! There's nothing I enjoy more than pure engine sound, and nothing I hate more than music covering the entire video (especially when in POV). You all make it sound so easy to record clean, clear engine sound. And I'm sure you all have got the perfect setup on your bikes: quick and easy to put together and take down, one button operation, no wires in the way, and no synchronizing video with audio, clip by clip, in post. To me, it took me years and a lot of money in trial and failures, before I got to where I am now, and even so, I still hate how complex and cumbersome the whole process of recoding audio is. Cleanest sound: stand alone microphone and sync the audio in post. In the real world, unless you go for one long take, if you like me record several little clips during the ride, turning both the mike and the camera on and off 30 times is a pain in the butt. Not to mention how long it takes to sync all up properly when editing. And God forbid you forget to turn on the mike one time, good luck with finding which clip goes with which track. Easiest option: just record through the camera's microphones; one button, all synched up for you. Result: sometimes the wind noise completely ruins the audio, to the point that it's near impossible to even hear the engine. Hence, my covering it up with music in order to save the video. Middle ground is an external mike. But here also it's not that simple. If you go wired, than you need a long-ass wire to get the microphone into a shielded location on you or the bike. Best case scenario: decent sound but you have to deal with the wire any time you wanna get on/off the bike or in/out of your gear. And I'm not about to have you all listen to my wheezing, out of breath, by placing the mike into the helmet. If you go wireless, you are where I am right now: best of both worlds. Expensive as hell, but kind of practical during both filming and editing. Finding a good spot without wind AND without vibrations is still very tricky, but manageable. Now for example I record with and Insta360 ONE RS in 360 mode. You have no idea how tricky it has been to hide the external wireless microphone receiver on the camera, so that it wouldn't show on the footage. I've only managed that in my last trip (which I haven't posted yet). I'm sure you're all much cleverer than me but, for my life, the pain in the ass of recording audio easily and with good quality has me, to this day, constantly on the verge of stopping bothering with recording motorcycle videos altogether! Like you I hate music in motorcycle videos but recording good audio is often more trouble than it's worth. As you read my response, I may already have posted my last video because of this...

      Ik had, en heb in sommige opzichten nog steeds moeite met audio-opname. Soms, zoals in deze video, nam ik rechtstreeks op met de cameramicrofoon die, blootgesteld aan de wind, alleen bij lage snelheden het juiste motorgeluid registreert; complete rotzooi op kruissnelheid. Geloof me, ik vind de muziek in de meeste gevallen ook irritant, maar als de audiotrack gecompromitteerd is, heb je geen keus. Ik heb geprobeerd de audio afzonderlijk te hercoderen, maar het is veel werk later in de postproductie om alles opnieuw uit te lijnen. Uiteindelijk niet de moeite waard. Tegenwoordig gebruik ik een draadloze microfoon, met wisselend succes, waarmee ik muziek volledig uit mijn video's kan verwijderen. Desalniettemin waardeer ik uw opmerkingen en steun. Proost!

    Did you try it on muddy wet roads?

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      As mentioned, I tried the X-ADV on all sort of terrains: paved dry, paved wet, dry and wet gravel, dry and wet dirt, dry and wet rocks. The X-ADV is heavy, but very well balanced, that helps; it's Achilles heels are the wheels size. 17 and 15 it's just too little for off-roading, for two reasons: 1) obviously, larger diameters would make it easier to roll over obstacles 2) there isn't much choice when it comes to tire thread and compounds. Not much you can do about the wheels diameter, not without a serious suspension and geometry reconfiguration. You can opt for a more dirt oriented tire, but as far as I know you can only go as far as the Pirelli Scorpion STR. This tire loses none of the performance on pavement, it's just great. However it's better than the stock tires when used off road, no question. Nevertheless it's still an 80/20 on road biased tire, so it will deal with everything except wet mud, especially if clay, especially if deep, especially if you're trying to ride the heavy X-ADV up an incline. It behaves exactly the same on my Norden 901. I'm happy with it for three quarters of the year, but I switch to Michelin Anakee Wild for the rainy, wet winters here in Italy, so that if I get a little too adventurous and encounter deep mud, I have better chances to dig an heavy adventure bike out of trouble on it's own power.

  • @MS-ji6oj
    @MS-ji6oj Рік тому

    What type of tires would you recommend for such offroading which could also be OK for paved roads

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      The most off road oriented tires you can mount on an X-ADV are the Pirelli Scorpion STR. This is an 80/20 on/off tire. Off road Don't let the 20% off road designation fool you, it works great on dry off road, both gravel, dirt and rocks. It will pull you out from a thin mud layer, although it loses sideways stability, but not from deep mud. On road One word: amazing. They will grip forever on pavement, probably better then the more road oriented tires the bike comes with. They last long, wear evenly and look great! Conclusions If I had used them when I filmed this video, I wouldn't have gotten stuck, they would have saved the day. This is the event that convinced me to switch over to the Scorpion (although I feared they'd be too off road oriented). My fears were unfounded: they were much better off road without losing any performance whatsoever on road. Norden 901 I've got them mounted on my Norden 901, and they behave exactly the same way. I use them all year around, dry or wet, with absolute confidence. I will take them off only once a year, in deep winter, where I'm going to encounter deep mud (I got stuck way to easily on deep mud once, and don't want to repeat the experience); I'll put on some Michelin Anakee Wild when chasing dirt roads in the middle of the Italian's wet winter (but these are not an option for the X-ADV).

      @@alistairbox Thank you! Very useful information. I've always thought of Pirelli as being too gentle and not lasting long enough. Seems I was wrong..

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      @@MS-ji6oj I changed my stock tires after 10K KM exactly, but they were worn past the safe limits, and I probably should have changed them at around 8.5-9K Km. I used the Scoprions for over 6K Km, and the tires still had at least 2K Km more on them, for sure, when I sold the bike. So 8K Km is a good approximation of their life span. Everyone says that they'll last you less than the stock tires, and in general I think this is a correct statement. Maybe 1-1.5K Km less. However I've noticed that they wear more evenly and tend to conserve their shape better, without flattening, as they wear out. The thread is also deeper (for off-roading) meaning that you have more rubber to use before they get bold. And finally, they achieve the amazing feat of being better off road, and equal (or better) than stock on road, by using a softer rubber compound. So yes, it makes sense that they'd get consumed faster, but overall I was very happy to trade a few kilometers for a tire that it's better than stock in every way.

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      @@MS-ji6oj Mt first proper bike was a Kawasaki Z750, because I wanted an exciting and aggressive sports bike, but I wouldn't go as far as a super bike. I enjoyed the thrill when I was younger and single, but as soon as I got married I wanted something more comfortable to travel in. Enter the X-ADV. On paper it ticked all my boxes, as I wanted both comfort (of which the X has plenty) and the ability to adventure and explore. In reality, I quickly realized that I like dirt WAY more than I like pavement, so I soon exceeded the dirt capabilities of the X-ADV. Very happy with the bike, I still speak very well of it and I don't regret the choice of buying it, but my goals have changed and so I needed something different. Enter the Norden. I wanted to go for an Husqvarna 701 enduro bike, but that would have meant no more touring with the wife during the summer. I wanted a KTM 890 Adventure, but the regular was too street oriented and low to the ground, and the R, which I really liked, was to tall and aggressive on the suspension for my eight, and also not very comfortable on the saddle. I think KTM realized that when the made the Norden, as it sits right in between the two: same engine, same chassis, same electronics, same everything except it has the comfort of the street KTM 890 Adventure on one hand, and on the other it only loses a few centimeters of suspension travel and ground clearance from the Adventure R, making it the perfect compromise between touring comfort and off road agility. Despite being massively more capable off road than the X-ADV, I reach the ground with more ease on the Norden that I did on the X. And I swear both me and my wife are just as comfortable on the saddle. There's even a comfort option that I bought with the bike, but I returned it unused because the standard saddle is plenty comfortable enough. It feels lighter because it is, and because it carries its fuel down low on the side pods close to the ground. Also I reasoned that if I ever wanted to turn the Norden into an 890 Adventure R, all I would have to do is to swap suspensions, from the Apex to the Explorer model. So yes, super happy with my choice as I evolve as a rider.

      La luz amarilla que ves es el control de tracción. Siendo en ese momento un piloto todoterreno muy inexperto, lo dejé activo en el nivel 2. Entonces, cuando la rueda trasera experimentó una pérdida de tracción, intervino el control de tracción; el tablero me avisó de esta intervención a través de la luz amarilla del control de tracción. En la esquina superior derecha del tablero, puede ver que el nivel de control de tracción tiene tres configuraciones: 2 barras que significan alto, 1 barra que significa bajo o ninguna barra que significa apagado. Ese día se puso en el nivel 2. Además, tenga en cuenta que el control de tracción de la X-ADV no es un control de tracción todoterreno, lo que significa que solo puede reaccionar ante una pérdida de tracción simplemente cortando electrónicamente el acelerador hasta que se restablece la tracción. Un control de tracción todoterreno completo como el que tengo en mi Norden ahora, tiene grados de intervención en los que no corta la potencia, sino que la modula.

      La piastra è della Nice CNC, presa su Amazon. E' la copia fatta in Cina dell'originale USA. Avevo originalmente preso quella OEM Husqvarna/KTM ma l'ho cambiata per quest per le seguenti ragioni: 1 - la OEM era troppo lunga per le mie esigenze. Usando il caricatore wireless della Quad Lock, si aggiunge un spessore che fa sporgere il cell troppo rispetto al monitor del cruscotto sotto, e di lato era anti estetico. Il caricatore di un GPS come il Garmin Zumo XT è più piatto, e si combina meglio con il supporto navigatore originale, i due monitors rimangono più in linea. Alla stessa maniera, se prendi l'attacco base della Quad Lock, molto sottile, allora torna tutto ed i monitors rimango bene in linea. 2 - Ho cambiato per questa base perché il supporto originale non prevede alla sua base un accesso ai contatti elettrici dentro il cruscotto per il caricamento. Il connettore OEM prevede invece che tu usi la preso 12v li vicino. Quella che ho io invece ha una sede fatta a posta per far passare il cavo dal cell a dentro al cruscotto, dove si trovano già predisposti cavi sotto chiave per il caricamento di accessori. Io mi trovo benissimo: esteticamente i monitors sono perfettamente allineati, senza sovrapporsi, ma di profilo quasi come fosse un unico monitor. La sede per il cavo mi permette di avere un supporto che carica, senza filo e quindi a prova d'acqua, sempre connesso senza bisogno di attaccare e staccare fili ad ogni sosta prolungata. La base e tagliata da un unico blocco di alluminio, solidissima, niente vibrazioni, a prova di bomba. Ovviamente l'allineamento dei monitor di cui parlo è basato sulla combinazione 'bases Nice CNC + accessori Quad Lock', se sulla base Nice CNC monti invece altri supporti/attacchi cell, allora cambiano tutte le misure/vibrazioni/distanze/performance in maniera che non ti saprei aiutare a prevedere. Nel video 'NORDEN 901 - Off Road | 4K | RAW Sound - Pontito to Collodi' , al minuto 20:15, vedi la moto di profilo con il supporto OEM (esempio dell'eccessiva distanza alla quale mi riferisco sopra) e durante il video potrai notare le vibrazioni da canna da pesca trasmesse al cell. Nel video 'NORDEN 901 - Touring | Snow at DOGANACCIA' , a partire dal minuto 8:10, vedi invece come il nuovo setup elimina qualsivoglia vibrazione e lascia il mio iPhone 13 Pro perfettamente allineato allo schermo, sia lateralmente che verticalmente, senza nessuna sovrapposizione degli schermi a limitare la visibilità del cruscotto ma neanche spazi vuoti di separazione che, per il mio gusto, sarebbero anti estetici.

      Grazie Mirco, per il commento e per l'invito che accetto con piacere. In realtà passo spesso e volentieri il confine tra le nostre due regioni, proprio per cercare le strade ed i passi più belli. La Norden è una moto speciale, come del resto lo è la sorella KTM 890 Adventure R; sospensioni leggermente meno rigide ma comodità (e oso dire eleganza e stile?) leggermente più curati. Sono contento della mia scelta. Come vedi giro tutto l'anno, ma con range/durata limitati dalle ore di luce a disposizione. Adesso che arriva la bella stagione, da solo o con moglie e amici, ci spingeremo sicuramente e nuovamente verso di te (e mio cugino di Modena, anche lui motociclista) e sarà mio piacere lasciarti un commento per vedere di combinare un incontro. Una delle mete discusse appunto con mio cugino che una custom, è la Pietra di Bismantova, come percorso stradale/passeggiata. In solitaria invece, nonostante la natura di quest'ultimo video, io preferisco evitare l'asfalto. Spesso trascino i miei amici, con moto e inclinazioni personali meno avventurose quando si tratta del fuori strada, a provare a seguirmi su per passi non asfaltati. E' vero però che ci vuole passione e la moto adatta; voglia di cercare l'avventura consapevoli che si può incappare nella perdita di equilibrio e qualche graffio sulla moto. A mio avviso la nostra moto è fatta per questo. Ma per avventurarsi serve la compagnia giusta, un'accoppiata moto/pilota che condivida la voglia di esplorare: così ci si diverte di più, consapevoli che se qualcosa non va come previsto, ci sono due braccia in più per alzare/girare la moto e provare un altro sentiero.

Unfortunately, at the time of this video, I had a GoPro Hero 5 but I didn't have the mike adapter and couldn't use an external mike for windless sound recording. I know use an Insta360 One RS, with an external mike plugged in, so to go back to full engine noise. Sometimes I forget to plug it in, so I cover that section of the video with music but, by far and large, I try to record and edit with as much engine sound as possible.

      Benissimo. Stesso grip, se non meglio (una volta scaldate) delle OEM. Molto meglio off road, ovviamente, sopratutto dietro. Si consumano più in fretta, e vero, ma hanno anche molto più tacchettò da dare prima di essere lisce. Le OEM, sopratutto davanti, dopo un anno e mezzo e 10K Km, erano da buttare, proprio pericolose. Le Scirpion invece le ho usate per 5K Km, le ho viste consumarsi, ma quando ho venduto l’X-ADV erano ancora in ottimo stato. Nota: ho cambiato l’X-ADV per una Norden 901, che di fabbrica monta le stesse Scorpion Rally STR, ed il mio feedback è lo stesso. In strada vanno che una bellezza, sia in accelerazione che in piega. In fuoristrada le sento un po’ più limitate, ma con la Norden tendo a chiedere molto di più alle gomme, che adesso sono il limite è le cambierò per qualcosa più 50/50 che 80 strada e 20 fuoristrada come le Scorpion STR (anche 30% fuoristrada sull’ asciutto secondo me in realtà).

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      Hi, I'm very happy with the Norden, I wholeheartedly recommend it! The new bike is allowing me to push the boundaries of my exploration of local dirt tracks way further. To answer your question, my method is to search for dirt roads on the map (I use the awesome app Mapy.cz) and try them out. When private or restricted, they're clearly marked as such, and you just turn around. Of course this is annoying but easy to do, because I leave here and I can just try something else if plan A didn't work. I assume instead you meant to ask if I knew of a way to know before end, if the routes planned would actually be all traversable once on location; if that's the case I'm afraid I can't help you. However I will say that, to my experience, if target single-tracks, more often than not they're restricted to hiking to preserve nature and the peaceful experience, but if it's a double truck, I've found they're usually meant either as service roads and/or for local farmers and hunters on 4X4, and are free to use, as long as your bike is up to the task. If plan to visit Tuscany or you find yourself in the area, please feel free to reach out, I'd be happy to help, if I can, with GPX files of routes that I've tested myself, and even join you if you needed company. Cheers!

      @@alistairbox Hi, thank's for your answer. Do i understand it right, if there is no driving ban marked and the track is wide enough for cars, it is legal to ride these tracks? • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox Рік тому

      @@michaelk.8520 That's right, unless the access to a road it' clearly marked as either private or altogether restricted , than it's fair game. Mostly you wanna pay attention to private property signs, because those can take all shapes and forms, and some times they're not easy to spot while riding (should you mistakenly go up someone driveway however, fear not, apart from the occasional over-zealous dog, you'll be met with a smile and directions out of the property and towards your destination). The Norden is amazing. Incredibly comfortable: I ordered the additional comfort seat but I quickly returned it in favor of other accessories because the stock seat is so comfortable already, both on and off road, both for me and my wife, even during all-day rides (each butt is different but these are my two cents). Riding position is great, even better now that I had the bar risers installed (I added them for better control when standing, but they also make the sitting riding position more comfortable, for my 1.78 m of height at least). One minor negative comment on overall ergonomics: you're very well shielded from engine heat, except on your feet, especially the right one, where you definitely feel it. A blessing in winter, might annoy someone in summer. It doesn't bother me, but I though I'd mention it. Plenty powerful enough, on and off road; so much fun. The electronics are just great; in pure KTM/Husqvarna stile, they're literally ready to race, effective, but clearly designed to increase your performance by allowing you to put down as much as the condition and your skills allow and not, like other manufacturers, to simply rein in the available power. Also very intuitive and easy to use (even clearer on the Norden than on the 890 adventure). If you plan to go off road, do get the Explorer package: where in other brands is just a gimmicky way to tweak everything to the most minute detail, like if you really knew what you were doing, here it allows to have easy access to the few things that really matter! I'd be happy to join you for a section of your journey and show you around my little corner of Tuscany. There's one route for example, 210 Km of mostly unpaved roads mixed with fun twisties on tarmac called 'L'Eroica' (I have a video here on the channel of my first time there, bit boring perhaps but it gives a pretty clear picture of the loop) and it's a beautiful ride through the Tuscany hills and medieval villages such as Siena and Montalcino. If you sleep on location, then it can easily be tackled the next day with an early rise. Food for thoughts.

    Did your Helmet fit in the space under the seat?

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox 2 роки тому

      What a great and appropriate question. I seldom talk about my gear, but I should. No, it does not fit, not even if you remove the peak. Not so much because it has a peak (others MX and ADV helmets do fit under the seat) but because the new shell design was engineered to be better compatible with racing neck braces, so it's quite wide, and doesn't allow the helmet to sink down all the way to the bottom of the 'well'. Since you're asking though, I'm assuming you either have a 2020 X-ADV or you're interested in this particular helmet model so I think some more details are required: 1 - As mentioned, my X-ADV is a 2020, I've heard that the 2021 has more capacity under the seat, or at least that that capacity is distributed differently from my model, so it might fit in the newest X-ADVs, I don't know. 2 - At first glance, you might mistake my new helmet (which I absolutely adore btw) for a NEXX X.WED 2. It is not, mine is the brand new X.WRL, which has a completely different shell shape, more of an MX style (nexx-helmets.com/en/helmets/x-wrl/atika/grey-neon)

    What about the bike? Is it any good?

    • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox 2 роки тому

      Hi drmsimpson, thanks for your comment. The bike exceeds expectations, but has its limits. Having the comfort of a scooter and the engine, suspension and frame of a motorcycle, the X is by definition a hybrid, and so is its behavior on and off road. On pavement, I'd say the result brings only positives: it's arguably one of the most comfortable motorcycles you're going to find, certainly in its price range. With it's very low center of gravity, the bike feels agile, reactive and lighter than it is; the engine is mounted horizontally and low to the ground and, with the gas tank also under the seat and down low, I would argue that the X's center of gravity is even lower that the BMW GS (which benefits greatly from its low mounter boxer engine, but has a large and high up fuel tank). With good breaks and Showa suspensions, the bike is planted, precise and confidence inspiring. The sitting riding position is spot on, at least to my 1.75 m, although the comfortable but wide seat, makes reaching the ground with both feet a tiptoeing affair. Like the professionals, I fix this but mastering the one-good-feet-down-is-better-than-two-precarious-dangling-lags technique, and it works great for me. Off road is where you find its limitations. Reminding ourselves that big heavy bikes, no matter the specs, do not belong off road, one needs to define off-road in real life terms. The X-ADV will go where a GS will comfortably go. The X-ADV will struggle a lot where the GS struggles significantly. The GS will go somewhere where only technical and experienced riders are capable and confident enough to take it, and the X-ADV my call it quits at the point. In my experience, it will do gravel service roads brilliantly (with that said, most bikes on mixed tires would). Mud requires dedicated tires, and the small wheels of the X-ADV make it so that you have a limited and inadeguate range of options. I moved to the Pirelli Rally Scorpion STR, because the stock tires are like 80% road, but 0% mud. The Scorpion are much better, but are still plenty road oriented and will never allow you to tackle deep mud or seriously rough terrain. In connection to this, the wheels size is the real Achilles heel of this bike. 17 inches is not big enough to roll over obstacles, and both 17 and 15 inches offer you no choice in rubber. Great on the road, a liability off road. Standing up on the optional pegs is a little awkward because they are to wide apart, too small, and too close to the fixed foot rest in front of your toes, so that you can't place the middle of your foot on them, but the tip instead. The handlebar is probably wide enough, but not high enough for standing in good control. In practical terms, you will go over rocks, but very slowly because the wheels are small, having to do that, the slow speed exacerbates the instability of the small wheels making balancing the bike even harder. Basically you'll go slow because you won't feel in control going much faster (personal skills are of course a major factor here, and I'm just your average rider). With that said, you can go check my earlier off road videos (still on stock tires unfortunately) where I push the bike a little more than I do now. You'll se that it does proper off road, even in the hands of a first timer, I'm just saying that you won't be too comfortable doing that, and it won't put a big smile on your face, not like it does on pavement. Here ua-cam.com/video/IvnuGWm3EmI/v-deo.html and here ua-cam.com/video/DO0JjKQkEkc/v-deo.html Personally, I'm planning to buy a Honda 300L Rally to go off road with, and leave the X, for the trips with my wife, or light 'offroading' when it happens naturally.

Many of the videos I watch are filmed in the UK and, for what I can see, much like Italy your country seems to be designed to provide endless winding roads and beautiful vistas. Like any other Honda, the X-ADV is crazy reliable. I've done just about anything with it, on it and, to be fair, to it and it hasn't blinked. After 15,000 Km, never a failure, of any kind. With that said, regardless of the drive, I should warn you that the X is far heavier and, crucially, taller than its scooter-ish looks would have you believe. I'm 1.75 m and I'm on tiptoes. Good ground clearance and suspension travel, but it gets quite physical on uneven terrain, as you have to choose which leg you need to firmly plant on the ground; both are not an option.

The side cases I've chosen are the Alaska model, 36 liters each. My top case is the standard Honda at 35 liters. I also use, on occasion, the 9 liters Central Bag from Honda, that sits between my knees in the front. I travel regularly with my wife, and both the X-ADV and the cases have been perfect! I've chosen the Alaska model because of the large capacity and top loading. I've tried, and disliked, the clam shell style side cases like the GIVI Trekker 33 liters, and prefer to load my gear from the top. My X came with the top case but, if it hadn't, I would have bought a larger, two helmets (about 46 liters) top case from Givi, so that I would have had more space and one single key for all three cases (top and sides). I hope I've managed to answer your question, otherwise please feel free to ask!

      @@mrakmal6978 Yeah.. I completely agree with you!!! As you can see from many of my other videos, I prefer to record the engine rather than add music in post. The thing is that it's a bit more laborious, as I record the engine separately with a Sony Digital Sound Recorder, and not through the camera. That implies syncing all the video files with the corresponding audio files in post! Sometimes I don't feel like going through the trouble and so I take the easy way out... music. At the moment I film with an Insta360 Go 2, and record with a Sony ICD-UX570 digital recorder. If you, or anyone reading, know of a more streamlined and efficient workflow, I'd be happy to adopt it and have pure engine sound in all my videos!

      Absolutely crawling, you’re right. Partly because it was my second ever time off road, on this bike, AND in total 😅 Partly because, at least to me, going faster than that makes the bike rattle and shake in a way that doesn’t seem right to me… it feels like I’m shaking it to pieces… Maybe it’s just my impression, or maybe the bike is meant to tackle these routes but very gently… I don’t know. But I’ve chosen to take it easy, just to be safe and, if you look at my latest videos, I still tackle off road slowly and carefully. But, personally, I like it that way with this big heavy bike. It feels appropriate. I’m on the other end THIS CLOSE to buy a Honda CRF 300 Rally, exactly so that I can hit rocks and bumps freely, knowing that the bike is designed to take it. And not worried if I drop it 😉

      Thank you Juan, I'm glad you enjoy my content, be sure to subscribe! The system I chose is Quad Lock. My iPhone 13 Pro is wrapped in a Quad Lock case, necessary to use the system. Here you can find one that fits your phone: www.quadlockcase.eu/collections/cases On my motorcycle's accessory bar, I've used the Mirror Mount as a base. There are other mounts depending on the diameter of your mounting point: handlebar, mirror, accessory bar, etc. (www.quadlockcase.eu/collections/shop-motorcycle/products/mirror-mount-motorcycle-scooter?variant=40794346320) I've then removed the standard attachment that comes with it, a simple connector from mount to phone case, and I've replaced it with the Weatherproof Wireless Charging Head; as the name implies, this connector also wirelessly charges the phone, and it is waterproof, so I don't have to worry about it if it rains or when I wash the bike.(www.quadlockcase.eu/collections/shop-motorcycle/products/weatherproof-wireless-charging-head?variant=33109734752338) I used to have the X-Grip RAM mount. It worked but, where it was functional and flexible, it certainly wasn't practical or pretty to look at... not to my eyes at least. In my video 'Honda X-ADV - RAW Sound - Touring Mt. Matanna - Day 2' , you can see how the X-Grip looked like; decent when the phone was in it, very ugly without the phone. The only advantage I see is that RAM's X-Grip doesn't require a dedicated phone case for it to work, and you can literally mount any phone or even a small tabled as a navigation system. (ua-cam.com/video/jdqJ7WpmiHI/v-deo.html). I moved to Quad Lock and never looked back. Very secure, easy to use, streamlined and elegant. Unlike the X-Grip, it allows for one hand operation, both connecting and disconnecting the phone in literally one second. There's no ugly rubber security net necessary as additional safety retainer. Once it clicks in, it will never come off. As you can see, I'm a big fan of the system, and would 100% recommend it.

      My dear Doctor, I think that if you visited the south of Italy you would find yourself right at home; they didn't call it Megale Hellas for no reason, right? ;-D Here in Tuscany we're lucky to enjoy high mountains, rolling hills, and a beautiful coast, all in the span of a few kilometers in any direction. Perfect spot for wandering around on an adventure bike! Have you ever visited? • @alistairbox
      @alistairbox 2 роки тому

      The NC750X is a motorcycle I considered carefully before choosing the X-ADV. You don’t get the same quality suspensions as the X, but you get larger wheels, which will offer you far greater tire options, plus you still get a large storage compartment upfront. Just be careful about comfort: I hear the seat is hard and oddly shaped, making it uncomfortable very quickly, this is one of the things that put my off the NC. I suggest you try it first, and that you enquire on the cost and availability of a custom saddle, just in case.

      @@alistairbox I would prefer the XADV, unfortunately it is not offered in Canada. I also prefer the automatic option and it is offered with the NC750X. I like the larger tire size with the 750. As far as comfort with the XADV i totally agree with you and that is a significant factor of why I would choose it, if it was available here.

      @@lawrencelawrence3920 If you want the DCT you have two other options, the Forza 750 (if available in Canada and if you don't care at all about riding off the pavement) or the Africa Twin with DCT, more expensive, for sure, but the 3K's difference in price is more than made up by the engine, suspensions and electronics upgrade you get with it. Don't let the imposing look of it fool you into thinking that it'd be harder to reach the ground: yes it's taller but it's also much narrower than both the X and the Forza. I actually reach the ground better on the AT than I do on the X, I'm 1.75 m tall and where I tip toe on the the x, I can place half my foot down on the AT. With all this said, I myself dream of buying a second Honda as soon as possible, and it's none of the above. As I've been properly bitten by the dirt bug, I look fore some thing tall and light to do some proper offroading with, without relinquishing Honda's famed reliability (in other words, no KTMs for me). I'll be buying, probably next winter, an Honda CRF300 Rally. As you're aspiring to buy an X, you're surely looking for comfort, elegance, power, speed and electronics. As none of those apply to the CRF 300 Rally, I don't think you'd be interested, but if you are thinking about dirt, don't make my same mistake thinking that an over 200 Kg bike will ever be easy or fun to ride off road; not even if it's an AT or a KTM 890 R. At 150 Kg, the Rally is easy to ride, easy to pick up, and you don't really care if you drop it, as you inevitably will when riding off road, because there isn't much to break, nor is there anything too expensive to replace. Food for thought.
