Top 10 Ongoing SFF Series
Many people don't like starting a series until it's completed. But there's an excitement that comes with reading an ongoing series and anticipating the next book to be published. Here are 10 series I feel are worth picking up now and reading while they are still ongoing.

Midyear Series Check-In: How am I doing on my goal of reading 20 series in 2023?
Love how you go so hard on your fav authors! After loving Dresden so much I should’ve continued on with Butcher’s other series but have been dragging my feet. I’m trying to hit everything Tchaikovsky has ever written but I’ll need to prioritize his backlist more since just keeping up with the new releases is a lot!
Tchaikovsky is so hard to catch up on! It’s like he publishes 2 books for every 1 I read!
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews absolutely. Even if my ratio is more like I read 3 books for every 4 he publishes I can’t catch up
See, I am the type of reader who says they like to binge series, but then I rarely ever do that anyway because I keep getting distracted by the next new shiny release lol. I am definitely with you on Will of the Many, Bound and the Broken and all the MJS stuff!! And Stormlight of course, though I think I am going to count that as finished in my head for now when book 5 is out...?
One of these days, I'm convinced you will finally get to the point where you have read all the books and will be caught up on every series! I think that's the only way to slow you down! I'm also gonna consider SA completed once book 5 is out. I tend to go by sub series status whenever I talk about in progress or completed series. That's why Mistborn isn't on this list, there are no ongoing Mistborn sub series.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews I appreciate your faith in me, but I am less confident hahahah
Great list!! Some of my own ongoing favs in Stormlight, Dresden, and DCC! Considering how much we usually overlap I can’t wait to try all these others!
I think you would especially love The Will of the Many if you haven't already read it!
I didn’t realize you were such a big DCC fan. I thought the narrator did an amazing job on the audiobooks, or at least the first one…I haven’t listened to the rest. I thought it was a whole cast of people doing the voices and when I learned it was just one dude I was shocked.
I was instantly hooked! I binged all 6 books in July and when I was done... I started over again and read all 6 before moving on to anything else. I agree about Jeff Hays! He jumped straight to the top of my list of favorite narrators. I'm gonna have to find something else he has narrated.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews You’ll have to let me know how it goes if you end up listening to any other audiobooks he narrates!
Ayyyy DCC!
Is that where you thought it was going to land on this list?
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews not as high as you listed it!
Very insightful and entertaining. Big fan of the series. Have found others out here in Honolulu as well. As a writer myself, I was geeking out over Ryan's character analysis and process explanations. Insightful comments on storytelling as a process and the why/how of differentiating characters and why they do what they do.
I'm glad you enjoyed the interview! Ryan is such a cool guy. It was a blast being able to talk to him about his books.
Skip Silverthorn & Sethanon and just go straight to Daughter of the Empire only! The greatest book!!
I wish I heard this advice before I read Silverthorn and Sethanon. I wasn't a fan of either of those books.
I too have read a lot of Drew Hayes and Ken Follet, actually Hayes is probably my number 1 read, as most of my best read authors are at about 10 books, versus you're 20 to 30 books. 😊
10 books from a single author is impressive! There aren't even that many authors out there that have written 20-30 books. I tend to become a bit obsessive when I find an author I like, so I can't help myself but to binge their whole backlog.
Wow, I don't think I have read 20+ books from any author, those are insane numbers!! I definitely need to get into some more Tchaikovsky and Drew Hayes myself. Curious to see how your list is going to change over the years haha
I may have more books from a single author, but you've probably read books by 500 more authors than I have... and that's just in the last 2 years! If you became a series binger like me, you'd be at 20 books in no time and you're probably pretty close with MJS. It's really fun seeing an author that comes out of no where to become one of your most read. When I did the list in 2022, I had at most read 1 Drew Hayes book. So you never know when an author is going to become an instant favorite.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews hahaha I definitely need to make an effort to get back to series bingeing!! and true, I am close with MJS
Great video!! I might have to make a video like this at some point. I haven't read much by some of these authors. Jim Butcher is probably my top one as well, or...at least it would be up there near the top. ;p
The Dresden Files makes it really easy for Butcher to become a top author. Not many authors would have the audacity (not to mention the publisher's support) to write a single continuous series that's supposed to be over 20 books long! Thanks for watching!
To my Gif Champion, I just subbed! Although King & Grisham are my most read authors in the past now with rediscovering fantasy, Abercrombie, Jordan, Gwynn, Sapowski, Tolkien, Hobb, GRRM, & Buehlman are my most read.
Thanks for subbing! I haven’t read Grisham, but I’ve read at least one book from the rest of them! Seems like you’re a fan of darker fantasy.
Yayyyy! Glad to see you back posting! 🎉
Thanks for giving me the time to film/edit the video!
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews 100 days is all it took 😂👌🏻
According to Storygraph it looks like we have three overlapping authors in our top tens, any guesses on who they are?
Sanderson, Jordan, and Hobb?
They are all in my top ten but I wasn’t counting Hobb since she’s just in your honorable mentions. It’s actually Jim Butcher, I read quite a few Dresden books before I DNF’ed.
@@alexsedai lol, can’t believe I forgot my own top 10.
@@alexsedai I think you would like the Alex Verus series a lot more than Dresden. The character of Verus almost seems like he was written by someone that liked the idea of the Dresden files, but hated Harry Dresden.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews 😆
Adrian Tchaikovsky is one that just keeps coming back as his books leave a huge imprint after I finish reading it
Many books fade as time goes by, but his books tend to get better as you have more time to think about them.
yeah, the first one is pretty good but they get better as you go along
The first one has actually been my favorite so far, but I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying the series!
i subed to the channel great video
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Loved this review! Just got into fantasy and haven’t read since highschool.
That’s awesome you’re getting into reading again! What fantasy books or series have you read so far?
I don't think that you can kill a thing like Gaki, he was a product of the f'ed up world. But the novel needed to be concluded, for now. Loved this book.
I absolutely agree!
I’ve only read the first Dresden Files book by him and yeah it doesn’t make me want to continue. I do NOT like how he thinks of/writes the female characters but I have heard it gets better so I probably will keep trying it
That’s very understandable. I would say that element of the series doesn’t drastically improve. It may get better, but not by leaps and bounds. It’s part of Dresden’s personality. As he matures, that part of him matures as well, but it’s a slow process and at the end of the day, he’s still Dresden. I would recommend giving the Alex Verus series by Benedict Jacka a try instead of continuing Dresden.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews ooh okay thank you! I’ll check that out
What a horror, overcoming disability in a fantasy??
You say that like there are countless examples of dragon rider fantasy where the dragon has a disability.
John Gwynne & Philip Quantrell are current superstars in epic, old-fashioned fantasy.
I’ve read ‘Faithful and the Fallen’ and the overuse of fading to black really turned me off to the series. I’ve tried Gwynne’s other series as well and just couldn’t get into them. I also struggled with Rise of the Ranger by Quaintrell. But that might just be because it’s narrated by my least favorite narrator.
Idk why this was so compelling considering that I have read zero Jim Butcher yet, but I loved seeing your ranking! I think I would actually start Codex Alera before Dresden, but who knows what will happen lol
I’m glad you still enjoyed it! I’ve heard Codex Alera be called “wheel of time lite.” Which I can sort of see that. Of the three, the series that I think has the highest potential for you to enjoy is The Cinder Spires. But that also has the most unknowns since it’s only 2 books in and I wasn’t a fan of book 2.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews eeeh idk how I feel about that WoT lite comparison lol, it makes me nervous Thanks for the personalised rec, I will check out Cinder Spires for sure!!
25 books are you a fan or something?
Yeah, he has one or two books that are alright.
Epic tier list! I still need to read all the Alera and Cinder Spires books. My Dresden S-tier would look very similar but probably also include Battle Ground
Completely fair. Battle Ground was one of the hardest for me to figure out where to place it. I wonder if I’ll end up moving it after I complete my reread.
I just listened to the great coats book one and I didn’t really like it! I didn’t even realize there were more series!
That's too bad! It is a very distinctive story telling approach and there is also a scene in Traitor's Blade that really bothers some people. So I'm absolutely understanding of anyone who decides the series isn't for them. The Court of Shadows series, starting with Play of Shadows is a new series with the first book being published a month or so ago. However, if you don't like the Greatcoats, I wouldn't recommend this series either. Spellslingers is a completed series that takes place in the same world, but on a different country or continent than the Greatcoats. It reads much more YA and there's no direct connection between the two series. In the future, some characters might run into each other, but you could read all of Spellslingers without ever picking up another Greatcoats book.
Finished this series a few months ago. Enjoyed the world building ,race and the apt concept. Not a fan on the story of tisamon after his death but atleast my girl cheerwell had a good end after her constant moaning about achaeos death which almost made me stop reading. But she definitely improved the most as a key character. Adrian Tchaikovsky space opera series like children of time and shard of earth are more well known than his other series like shadow of the apt and echoes of the fall up because of how unique and different they are from any other pieces of sci fc currently available .
I agree, I didn't like what happened with Tisamon after book 4, and Che definitely had a lot of growth throughout the series. She wasn't my favorite to begin with, but really took over during the second story arc. I still need to read Children of Time and Shards of Earth. I tend to lean more fantasy so I started with Shadows of the Apt and Echoes of the Fall.
Well said. I enjoyed this a lot, it feels like he's really got a solid grip on his style now and was able to use it more efficiently to put you through the wringer. I agree about Crucible of Chaos having almost no ties to this book, I'm assuming some stuff may come up later on but at this point it kind of feels like calling it a prelude was just a marketing gimmick.
I really hope the two storylines merge at some point in the series. I'd be really disappointed if calling Crucible of Chaos "a prelude" ended up being nothing more than a marketing gimmick.
Thank you for another great review! Sounds like a complex and interesting read. Love all the little movie clips inserted!! 🎉
Thanks! Hopefully I didn't overdue it with the move clips!
I love the movie clips. Great review. It reminds me a bit of the premise of Midsummer Nights Dream where the actors and the play merge and you’re not even sure which one you’re watching anymore. 7 clips? I want to go back and cheat but I won’t! Great job connecting to the other pieces of the series. I’d love to read them all and see how they intersect
I could see that being similar and would not be surprised at all if the closest thing to this story is something by Shakespeare. That would be quite fitting. Lol, you are free to go back and watch again! I would consider that doing research, and not cheating. I think you'd really like this series and The Greatcoats. The banter in the Greatcoats is up there with Riyria as far as my favorite banter in fantasy. The narrator is also fantastic and most of the books are short as far as fantasy goes. But I will say Sebastien's books are definitely not kid friendly.
I love that De Castell is such a reliable author for you! And his imagination sounds sooo cool! Definitely want to go back to Greatcoats still, if only because I desperately want to read this book now lol. Great review!
Yes!! I could see this book/series working better for you than The Greatcoats have so far. Although I’m still hoping you have a better experience with the Greatcoats wherever you give it another try.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews I have had some great luck with second chance rereads in the past, so I have high hopes for Greatcoats!
@@esmayrosalyne Yay! It's amazing how much your mood and expectations going into a series can influence how you feel about a series. But that's also why I like rereading - The books stay the same, but you are always changing.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews 10000 percent!! Here's to the rereads!
I love twelve random book recommendations from twelve "bookish friends". Thanks for always being my Go To for where to jump in next into my TBR.
I have enough recommendations to keep you busy for about a decade!
This is on my list to read so I’m glad to hear good things about it
I hope you like it! Are you going with the original version "Magician" or the split version Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master?
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews if I can find three authors preferred edition one where it’s just “the magician” I think I’d like to do that!
Great review! I've always had this on my plate for classic fantasy but never gotten around to it yet. Just waiting for the right moment
I would definitely suggest this for the top of your classic fantasy TBR. It reads much more modern than most and the books aren’t too long if you go the split version route.
Okay but you were definitely not alone in having completely wrong expectations of this book, I am really surprised by some of the things you mentioned here lol. Glad to hear that you had such a great time though! And super interesting what you shared about the expectations/promises, I am going to take that with me on my reading journey 🥰
Lol, that's fair! I was really surprised by some of the things I thought about this book too! I never expected to actually like it. I was lucky that the autoplay functionality on youtube played that Sanderson video. I'm pretty sure I was listening to music before that and was too distracted to change it. But then I stopped whatever I was doing and started listening to the lesson he was giving. It was really eye opening. It's like this Sanderson guy knows a thing or two about being a good story teller.
Great review, super helpful! It sounds like your experience reading it was similar in some ways to how I’ve felt reading The Cycle of Fire. I really didn’t know anything about it other than it was classic fantasy and there was a wizard on the cover of book one. With that little information I had built certain expectations and when those expectations weren’t totally fulfilled I guess I felt the author didn’t deliver on their promises but I readjusted my mindset on book two and enjoyed it more….still didn’t love it but it was worth my time since they’re not overly long books.
That sounds like a very similar experience! Any suggestion on what mindset I should have going into The Cycle of Fire since it's on my TBR for later this year?
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews I guess just don’t pick it up when you’re in the mood for a typical old school fantasy story because it does have some sci fi elements. I don’t mind stuff like that but I definitely have to be in the mood for it and wish I had known going in because that just wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. That’s why I was really glad you mentioned in your review the story spans multiple planets because that’s not what I would have expected and probably would have found it jarring if I hadn’t known about it beforehand.
@@alexsedai Good to know! As for the multiple planets, I meant to explain that more in my review. Something happens that opens up a "rift" between two worlds and when people from one world use the rift to cross into the other world, that was when the "rift wars" began. Not sure if that makes a difference that crossing from one planet to the other is a feat of magic and not based on science.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews Ohh okay, yeah that helps some…definitely less jarring than someone just hopping on a spaceship or something. And to be clear The Cycle of Fire is still fantasy and has magic but there are just some components that threw me off a little.
This is a really good series. What’s up with the 2 different ratings? 5 stars and 86/100….which maths out as 4.3 stars out of 5.
Short answer is I post ratings on two different sites. Goodreads uses a star rating system, and Storylace uses a scoring system out of 100. Here's the longer in depth answer. Star rating from me are more generic and based on personal experience. They generally equate to: 1 = The books seems like it's a cash grab and I feel disrespected or insulted by the author. 2 = I wish I didn't waste my time reading this book. It absolutely was the wrong book for me. 3 = I had a good enough time reading this and I'm not mad that I read it, but I'll probably never read this book again. 4 = I had a good time reading the book. There's a chance I do a reread at some point. 5 = I loved the book, I couldn't put it down or immediately wanted to do a reread. The score out of 100 is a more critical look at the following categories: enjoyment, plot, characters, world building, pacing, writing style, cover art, audio quality, readability, and how memorable it is. Different categories have different weights (example: cover and audio quality are worth up to 2 points each and plot is worth up to 20 points). Once all the individual categories are scored, the total is the rating out of 100 The two ratings do not come out to a perfect ratio, but generally anything that scores 83 or higher ends up being a 5 star read. This method also helps me differentiate between a book I loved (Priest of Bones = 86) and an all time favorite of mine (Words of Radiance = 99).
I love the part about the writer making promises to the reader! So true. Glad that you ended up liking this book series so far once you gave the second book a promise re-vamp. Sounds very promising! 😉
lol, very promising indeed! Hearing that lecture about promises between writer and reader was very eye opening to me.
I always forget how long this series is…I doubt it’s one I’ll ever read, not a huge fan of insects plus it sounds like there are some not so great books to slog through.
That’s fair. This is a hard series for me to recommend because there’s a lot to like, but plenty to not like as well. And often what one person hates, another person loves.
Great review. I just finished it, and I agree with you on most of your points. I was surprised by the ending too-not just the events but the emotional impact, like you. I don’t have a personal reason to have been impacted by it. I just think the author saved all of his emotional reveals for the end of the trilogy, and it paid off.
Loved this vid for a fantastic series! My tier list would look quite different with bk 1 in the middle somewhere and Sea Watch in the middle, and ones like Scarab Path, Dragonfly Falling, War Master’s Gate, the Air War, and Salute the Dark all in the top tier right next to each other! There were so many standouts for me, and my lowest two would be Heirs of the Blade and Blood of the Mantis, a prototypical side quest book - though I still liked both those reads!
That does not surprise me at all. There is so much in this series that different parts of it are bound to work better for some readers than others. I'm actually a bit surprised Jordan and I were in agreement as often as we were.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews yeah you two were Apt twins!
Oh I loved this dual review style, great to hear two different views on the story in one video this way!! I had zero clue what this was about, but now I am extremely excited to check it out. Consider me sold!
Awesome! We were both a bit nervous about how the dual reviews would be received, so good to hear that you enjoyed it! I had no idea of what to expect when I started Cage of Souls because I've never heard anyone talk about it. But I enjoyed it and I do think you would enjoy it as well!
Probably not for me, Sci-Fi and standalones usually don’t work for me. Anytime I read a stand-alone I almost always complain that it would have been better as a series. lol
I'm not usually a fan of Sci-Fi either, but enjoyed this one so much that I'm going to check out Tchaikovsky's other sci-fi works. Maybe it's just where my mental state is at, but standalones have been working for me! But I totally understand the feeling that a standalone leaves things either underdeveloped or unresolved.
I discovered your channel through this video (via Reddit, btw.) Happy Reading! 😎📚👍
Thanks for stopping by! I was wondering if anyone ever finds my channel from my posts in Reddit. I hope you enjoyed the review and happy reading!
Thanks for the great reviews! Sounds like he has some really great world building but probably should have included this in a larger novel or series to really give the world he was envisioning justice.
Absolutely, but still a really good book!

Absolutely! I don’t know if either of us are smart enough to understand his stories on our own.
