I am so so so intrigued by this book. I am admittedly a sucker for city settings, so this books seems perfect for me. And Tchaikovksy hasn't let me down yet, so there's that! Great review!!
Exactly! It really helped having others in the discord reading it at the same time. So many things I would have missed if it wasn’t for everyone else’s comments.
I think a better treatment of a familiar but still unfamiliar and exceptionally complex city is Last Letters from Hav by Jan Morris. A masterpiece of fantastic realism. It’s extremely well written and easy to follow from a prose perspective,. Yet the city Hav remains enigmatic and ultimately unknowable despite you feeling that you do understand what happened and why. It starts out as a simple travelogue. But an underlying tension gradually builds throughout until a triggering point is reached at the surprising but still logical climax. Highly recommended.
What an excellent review and I appreciate your honesty about your experience. I have the audio and may try and immersion read it to try and follow it better.
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews shouldn’t be too long-I’m trying to stay on top of Tchaikovsky new releases as best I can so I don’t fall too far behind while I’m trying to climb way out of of his backlist 😅
The great and frustrating thing about Tchaikovsky is nothing he writes is like anything else. So it's practically impossible to know if your experience with one of his books will translate to any of his other books. I guess that was just a long winded way of saying this is as good of a book of his to start with as any other. lol
@@PatrickRyanBookReviews Oh that’s good to know. Sounds like if this one doesn’t work for me it doesn’t mean I should give up on him. What’s your favorite Tchaikovsky book?
@@alexsedai My favorite so far has been Empire in Black and Gold. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like the rest of the 10 book series reached the same heights as the first book.
@@alexsedai Yeah, definitely not ideal. There were some other good books in the series (especially books 8-9) but overall it left me disappointed since it never reached the expectations that were set after book 1.

I can't wait to hear what your thoughts are! I can't say enough just how different this book is from anything else I've ever experienced.
Definitely agree on this book. It was brilliant but had my eyes crossing at some points. I mostly loved it and partly had no clue what I was reading.

I've never heard of that book. I'll go check it out! Thanks!

Thanks you! An immersion read is absolutely the way to go.
Thanks for the thorough review!! It sounds like it was truly either “madness”’or “genius” or a bit of both! 🫣
A bit of both is probably the truest answer! Thanks for buying me the book so I can give it a reread at some point to fully understand!
I’m so intrigued to try this one! Loved the review
It's so unique! I'm really interested in hearing your thoughts whenever you get to it!

It sounds really interesting. I’ve never read any Tchaikovsky before, maybe I’ll start with this one.

You should really read the book "A beautiful Mind". Also, there's a background static in your audio you might want to look into.
I have a copy of it, just need to get around to it. And the static should have only lasted about 1 minute. The mic was dying on me.
