    Hey Nick! Why did you decide to do 3-6? This starts out with their best, and no way (IMHO) were they going to be able to match 'Crime', and they didn't come close. That's more of a compliment to 'Crime' than it is an indictment on 'Crisis.' "Fool's Overture" is the best song they did that did not appear on 'Crime.' It is rare that I give 'BIA' a spin, as it was so overplayed, it is an album I never need to hear again. Loved this!

      thanks Steve - glad you enjoyed. 3-6 came to me as they are often forgotten albums after the debut and tricky second album. Many bands don't make it to 3, but If they do they tend to be into their stride so to speak. I agree on Crime - it's a simply fantastic record. I enjoyed all 4 though it has to be said. Also Peter Skov had been doing the first 10 by a band and I didn't want to blatantly copy him!!

    Very sorry I missed this! I found I wasn't getting notifications from your music channel, Nick. As always, your a pleasure to listen to. Do you write out everything or does the eloquence just naturally flow from your tongue? As you know, Uriah Heep reside in the pantheon of my favourite bands. Look at Yourself is my favourite, but all albums have some excellent tracks. I love the good wizard / bad wizard duel between guitar and drums in The Magician's Birthday, and The Spell for it's powerful slower mid-section has been a favourite since I first heard the cassette back in the mid-eighties. I hope you'll get a few more of these up in the 2025!

    • @carefulwiththataxeeugene-fz2ek
      @carefulwiththataxeeugene-fz2ek 8 днів тому

      thanks Peter 🙂 it's a mystery on the notifications. I loved Heep back in the late 70s - they were one of the first bands I got into. I just loved that Hammond sound, and Gypsy just blew me away! I then forgot about them for many years until I got tickets to see them in 2020 (although the concert didn't happen until 2022) and truly fell in love with them. Yes, there will be a few more in 2025 - but just who will I choose? It was your first 10 albums by a band that gave me the Genesis of the idea. Plenty of time so no Rush to get them done... ;-)

  • @AisForAliceBisForBob

    Hey Nick! Love the mighty Heep, top 10 band for me. 'LAY' to "SF' is one of the best 4 album stretches in rock history. Gary Thain was such an underrated bassist. Ken Hensley is my 2nd fav right behind Jon Lord. I missed the 'Conquest' tour, but have seen them 6 times. First was in 1973, which was a strange bill with Earth, Wind & Fire, and the last was the same tour you saw. Cheers!

    I never followed them much after purchasing Demons and Wizards. Being honest, I never followed many other bands either, after their big debut albums. The formative years of my rock soul were impeded by my stint in the US Navy's Submarine Surface and afterwards, Life's other trials and tribulations such as divorce, remarry, divorce, remarry, career loss, raise children, blah blah blah. And so I missed the bus on being able to exploit my dream of rock stardom, or at best, a career playing acoustic guitar in local taverns.

    I have owned a copy of the original, although not a first pressing, since about 1981, and still play it regularly. The new version does sound crisper in places, probably due to updated recording techniques, BUT, for me, the drums on the new version of Liar sound horrendous.

    • @aukebakker887
      @aukebakker887 Місяць тому

    • @carefulwiththataxeeugene-fz2ek
      @carefulwiththataxeeugene-fz2ek Місяць тому

      @@paulphipps3995 I think the issue is that they’ve “modernised” the drums through quantising, re-recording or whatever and they now don’t fit in with the overall mix. I said in the video that they have more attack, where the original sound is far more laid back. Still heavy but not so in your face. I stand by my comment that the original is the better overall listen.

    • @paulphipps3995
      @paulphipps3995 Місяць тому

      @@carefulwiththataxeeugene-fz2ek I totally agree. The original is better by far. There was a depth of feeling put into those recording sessions that can never be replicated. For me, the original instrumentation along with Freddie's voice will always be perfect.

  • @musicisajourney
    @musicisajourney Місяць тому

    Thinking now of your video reviewing the sound quality and your comments about the album title being called Queen I, I was reminded (just now) that ZZ Top named their debut Their First Album because they hoped there would be a second. I do appreciate a beautiful package for an album. High quality pulp and paper material, bonus recordings, and any other additional memorabilia makes it a treasure to own. I don’t have anything quite like that but my wife has a couple.

  • @musicisajourney
    @musicisajourney Місяць тому

    I was listening to all your comments of praise for the sound quality and I was thinking, “Yes, I hear you, but…” And then you mentioned the re-recording of some parts and, er, yes, but… And then the words about Freddy’s voice, and ah, see? And then finally you said it: You prefer the original, and you prefer it for all the reasons I could have thought of given enough time to consider. There are many albums from the early seventies and even later that contain fantastic music, but the recording quality is lacking. I often think, “If only the recording quality or mixing was better.” However, I also feel remixing and even re-recording parts so many decades later is like doctoring an old photo to say, “This is how I really wanted to look when I was 15.” I’m all for a good remastering. Steven Wilson does fantastic work. But remixing, re-recording, and adding things they originally wanted to have but couldn’t (Yes, Dave Mustaine, I’m thinking of your Megadeth remixes), to me that’s just not honest treatment of a historical artifact. I loved hearing your review, Nick. Coming from a veteran Queen fan whose opinions I know and trust, I can rest assured I’ve heard the best review out there.

    You really have such a way to express an album, Nick. Wonderful work! And thank you for mentioning my channel! As you probably have heard me say, Sin After Sin is one of my favourite Priest albums. It was the second one I bought, and I think part of the fascination was that it was not eighties heavy metal, so no one around me was listening to this (similar to Scorpions’ Virgin Killer). Shockingly perhaps, I didn’t actually own copies of Stained Class or Killing Machine until the end of 2011! They both have some great songs, but neither album resonates with me as strongly as Sin After Sin or even British Steel. Nevertheless, both albums are extremely important in the development of things to come. I wanted to type a comment several times during your video, but now I’ve forgotten what I wanted to say. I have a bid on The Cult’s Electric and so far no one else is bidding, so I’ll finally get a proper taste of that band. How’s Songs from the Wood? That’s the one JT album I’m still thinking to get and possibly Heavy Horses. For that matter, Trespass is the one Genesis album I want that I still haven’t bought. I just bought UFO’s Obsession last year, I think. It was never available on Amazon, so I bought it from Yahoo Japan Auction. Nice choice with 2112. Not the best one but a landmark album for the band for sure. Some good rockers on side two. I’d never heard of Nick Drake before, but someone mentioned him recently in one of these Beer & Vinyl contest entries and now you have. That often happens. Sin After Sin is one of my favourite JP albums with Sinner, Raw Deal and Dissident Aggressor being fantastic in my opinion. I’m looking forward to your Judas Priest 3-6 video!

      thanks as always Peter. I'm glad that these videos might encourage watchers to seek out new music, or spark memories of music they themselves enjoy. Nick Drake is an artist for quiet reflection, one that I certainly enjoy when I need to unwind or relax / destress. His voice is very comforting 🙂 I hope you enjoy Electric. It's probably their most raw record - guitar, bass, drums, vocals - that's it!! I'm looking forward to listening to those 4 JP albums again - that's kind of the point of the whole series I guess - to re-connect with past music loves 🙂

      @@musicisajourney sorry missed out on Songs from the Wood. Think Fairport Convention mixed with early Genesis and Ian Anderson’s folky vocals. The drumming is superb on it too. Worth it for that alone in my opinion Peter :-)

      a few years back, either Brighton or Fulham had a striker playing for them called Bobby Zamora. Opposing fans would sing: "when you're sat in Row Z and the ball hits your head that's Zamora" 🙂

    I recognize that second track because a guy in my drama class in grade 11 liked to play that song everyday on a portable cassette player. Everyday! For many days on end!

    Excellent opening line! You could go on like that in a Faulty Towers fashion. I actually watched this last night but didn't have time to comment. I love how those early eighties compilations get heavy metal... er, confused? Billy Squire, was it? Northern Vinyl Guy talked about a mid-eighties comp that included something from Rush's Power Windows - one of their least heavy albums! - as well as a few other contestable choices. But it was an exciting time and I think it's very cool that there are some excellent tracks included by bands who never got a record cut. That's like those compilation albums of sixties garage and psychedelic rock that have that one track that screams HEAVY METAL IS COMING! I've been on my toes waiting for another music-based video from you, Nick. Later, I will check out your The Cult live video. And I think Electric has moved up the list to become my next purchase. I found a used copy in great condition in the Amazon Market Place and another in an online flea market. One is a 2005 remaster, so I'm a bit worried about the loudness war effect. The other is a 1997 remaster, same year as the Rush remasters I bought. I wonder if the album is on the Dynamic Range index web site. Then I can see which copy has the better sound quality.

      It was a fantastic night out :-) From Jonathan Hulten and Mike Peters through to the main event. I saw them way back in 1987 and Ian’s voice is certainly still right up there :-) They played here with Alice Copper in 2022 but I couldn’t go at the time sadly.
