Growing fruit, vegetables and flowers PLUS wildflower walks, chickens and more!
Hi there! My name is Richard and my partner, Brandon, and I garden in our little slice of heaven located in the Mid-Cornwall Moors ☀️
We have cottage garden flower beds inspired by the great gardens around Cornwall, a Charles Dowding inspired no-dig allotment garden, a large wildflower meadow area and a rustic lean-to greenhouse that I fill with tomatoes in summer.
Join our channel to follow the changes throughout the year and watch it develop and grow into an established garden 🌹
Brandon was born and raised here with family in the surrounding villages, Richard moved to Cornwall in 2010 and fell in love with the place, and of course the people! 🏄♂️

Cyprus - Wildflowers, Birdlife and More
Garden on the moors are back on tour! This time, we have returned to Cyprus for some autumnal sunshine. We explored several hiking trails and found some brilliant wildflowers, especially autumn flowering bulbs, as well as a couple of incredible birds that have come down from the mountains of Europe to spend the summer months in the relative calm weather of Cyprus.

2022 Garden Review | Flowers, Vegetables, Chickens and More!
Can the quails hatch there own eggs , I'm very surprised but I've noticed the eggs are being laid in a pile , didn't expect the quail to get broody , I have one male two females , and new to any sort of foul, had someone stay who came with the male she left and couldn't take him we decided he needed female so got two and now I'm not sure wat to do
That’s interesting to hear, yes with the right conditions it is possible for them to hatch their own, but more often than not they don’t. With ours we find they lay in piles but aren’t really interested in hatching them 🙉
Wow, that was really fascinating. Miracle of life. Why are chicks so adorable!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! glad you enjoyed the video ☺️
Aww thought of you yesterday because I looked at my leek hoping it was alive, but no. All I planted last winter did nothing in growth. Lol. But proud you inspired me to try. Lol. Take care, thanks.
Oh sorry they didn't work out, but absolutely well worth giving them a go and trying again next year with fingers crossed 🤞
We have butcher birds around Melbourne ,they are great hunters of insects ,birds and reptiles .
Definitely worth a try,the potatoes you harvested looked lovely and they’re freebies 😀. I once planted out some Charlotte potatoes that I’d found sprouting at the back of the cupboard and harvested enough for a few meals, they tasted all the better for being freebies!😂 . Great idea using the bulb planter, will give that a go. 🙂
Absolutely! The best kind of potato is a free one 😂 Thanks! I find it really works for me, and is a nice balance between getting the seed potato in and reducing the soil impact around it
Brilliant video and quail aviary! It was nice chatting on Instagram BTW.
You too! Thanks for watching the video, glad you enjoyed it 😊
I read that Giant Mussleburgh will become perennial after 3 years and divide at the bottom, like a bunching onion. That they can withstand the cold very well. Have you ever thought to try that?
Ooh that's interesting, and I can see that they would as they often have little baby leeks growing from their roots. We tend to just eat them when they're ready, they often develop rust in our damp climate as they age so wouldn't last that long.
@@gardenonthemoors Let a couple go to seed and save the seed for replanting then? In this economy one must save money anyway one can.
Maaan i love gountains n the one i have i dont even turn it on unless ima be somewhere else cuz just hearing that? Make me wanna go pee ..i be running right to the bathroom. Not even trying to wother ..so fountains beautiful and everything its just ..i bounce. Hey man..yall got beautiful gardens straight up id love to visit so i can experience it not just watch thees videos..to me thats the best to pick up game for my garden not to copy but to be inspired to create my own life in gsrdens.
I don't know if i missed it - Was the February sowing done in a cold greenhouse? Great video by the way!
Thank you! Yes, unheated 🙂
I’m on the 16th day for my quails! I’m so excited for them to hatch
Best of luck! Will be sharing excitement with you as we have some on day 18 today which are now pipping! 😁
Thank you, lucky!!!
Garden is looking great! Been so cold and miserable here with me that I haven’t made any videos in ages…
Thank you very much! Not everything has gone to plan in the garden but I'm pleased with the plants that have done so well 😄
@@gardenonthemoors Especially the tomatoes - don't think I've seen so many!
nice video, your are doing well. Im watching from Nigeria and im right now in my quail farm . My quails say ”hi” .Sending love
Thank you! Yes doing well hope you are too. Our quails say “hi” back. ☺️
The lemons !! And also looks like you’re gonna need to extent the roof height in the conservatory !❤
Haha I'll see if Brandon is up to the task!
What a lovely catch up video, you’ve been very busy, your garden is looking beautiful. I tried your method of sowing my broccoli earlier this year and got them planted out and cropped them before the cabbage whites appeared and beat me to them! It was very successful,I’ve never had such a good crop 😃,thanks very much for that tip. Enjoy your garden 🫶🏻.
Thanks so much, that's brilliant news! I always say the mantra, prevention is better than cure. Glad they have done well for you, delicious with some fresh butter 😋
You gave me the courage last winter to try leeks, but I have yet to master it. Lol. Proud I tried though. Thank you. Hope the quail are well
Thank you very much! Be sure to water then and I'm certain they'll be great 😁 The quails are doing brilliantly thank you, regular fresh sand baths and they are in seventh heaven
Muy buen vlog 🎉❤
Thank you so much!
Great vlog very productive garden and green house , here in Melbourne we’re just going into spring great time of year ❤
Thank you! I'm really pleased with the greenhouse. Hope you have a productive year in store too 😀
We’ve just had an overnight temperature of 6*, feels like autumn here in my part of South Wales.
😮 oh thankfully we didn't get that here in Cornwall, what a funny year it's turned out to be!
Wow. I'm planning on getting quail. I've got chickens in a nice walk in run. Seeing your beautiful set up I'll do similar and not cages using a raised bed. I'll have so much fun and hopefully so will the occupants.
That sounds fantastic, best of luck and have fun with your quail!
Looking fantastic Richard. Yep, mulching is our secret weapon as well.
Even with all the birds we keep, compost we make, we always need more of the stuff 😂
Those chickens are so cute! Impressed you've got a lemon - all you need now is the G&T! Lovely garden tour - is there another planned for mid summer?
Thank you! The chickens are lovely to have around with us in the garden, yes hoping to get a summer garden video out soon! ☺️
@@gardenonthemoors Super! I've just subscribed so I don't miss it!
Quails lay eggs ☺︎
The cutest little eggs! 😍
Nice!! Love the effort
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video ☺️
Just realised where i recognised you from you live opersit us 🤣 small world
Haha! Well howdy neighbour!
So samazing! It's inspired me! Love from Morocco!
Glad you enjoyed the video! ☺️
Oh they’re lovely !! Actually they’re much bigger than I thought they’d be. Do you get a lot of eggs ? X
Now that it’s summer and more light during the day they are laying nearly once a day each which is great. Whenever I add more shrubbery they tend to stop for a bit until they are settled and they also slow down / stop in winter ☺️
I love it, Alex is one of my favorite UA-cam doggos 🐕
That's pretty
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 😄
Nice leeks, nice video, well put together and presented. Jim.
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed the video
What a top selection a plants! 😊
Thank you very much 😊
Intéressant ; mais par pitié demandez conseil pour les vidéos, ça va dans tous les sens; et cela bouge trop! J’ai mal aux yeux😅j’abandonne avant la fin
Thank you!
Gosh i though that if you had hens, you would not have slugs or snails !!! i would fire those little fluffy hens😂 Thank you for vlog
Haha I think I need to have a team pep talk with the girls 😂
@@gardenonthemoors 😂
Lovely vlog love your garden , lots of good wishes from Melbourne ❤
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video. I visited Melbourne a few years ago, great place and very similar to here in Cornwall, especially St Kilda. Like a home from home 🙂
Lovely tour and it’s all looking beautiful 😻. Have an amazing week ahead, Ali 🌞🌞🇨🇦
Thank you Ali, it's so nice to see the garden greening up again 😁
Great stuff. I just planted calabrese broccoli for the first time this year. I went ahead and did direct sowing in April and just poured half of the packet in a row. When they came up, I eventually thinned them and will be eating all the lovely broccoli sprouts that got thinned out.
Oh fantastic! You'll have lots of tasty broccoli before long then 😋
A great clip. The vegetation looks like the kind of place I imagine quail wanting to hang out. As a kid, I only ever saw quail running along the furrows in my Grandfather's farm. Now I'm planning a similar natural aviary for my own quail.
Thank you! Yes the quail love to hang out around the vegetation. Have fun making your aviary! ☺️
Very nice update. Do you have a way of protecting snow peas? i remember seeing how you protected your raspberries & I have 1 berry cage but only one; it holds all the blueberries. My seeds are under a wicker cloche but growing out of it & i don't know how to protect them. Thank you.
Are those JUMBOS?
Hi, I have weighed the eggs of the quails and they don’t quite fit into what is expected of jumbos but they are on the bigger side ☺️
Wasted a lot of seeds my friend not sure why don’t remove them and plant the one you pull they do fine transplanting
You're quite right, although I only have a small amount of space for them, max 15 plants, which I want a succession of across the season and so need different sowing dates. Each seed is inexpensive and this method means that the few I do grow are the strongest and most robust I can get. I do transplant the outcasts if a trio in a separate pot hasn't germinated, has failed due to slugs or are weak in growth, so they are also my insurance policy 😊 Hope that helps!
Thank you! What a lovely way to spend a few minutes! xoxo
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Lovely video, I have just planted some leaks from seed in a small planter and was worried that the shoots were too close together, but I see now that they’ll be fine thank you so much for your tips and for making such a sweet video. I cannot wait to eat my crops coming winter should all go well.
I'm sure they'll be great! Nothing better than eating your own veg, enjoy 😀
Do your quail go broody? I want to make an aviary like urs in hopes they’ll raise their own babies.
That sounds like a great project making your own aviary! We haven’t experienced broody quails ourselves, we used an incubator to hatch their babies out. 🐣
A great video thanks for sharing
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Cheers for sharing , had a mare last year though where doing so well then the rain killed them off , apparently the roots got saturated! They were in a container though not in open ground
😮 woah that must have been a lot of rain!!! Hopefully you have better luck this year 🤞
Good stuff! This year I will be growing 'Gros longue d'ete 2' and 'Bleu de Solaise' although normally I grow Musselburgh Giants.
That sounds brilliant! I hope they both do well for you 😊
I’m trying to find cheap but good fertile Japanese quail eggs to hatch because a little baby quail would be so cute
Yes they’re so cute, they grow up very fast!
Lovely to see the sunshine brief as it is at the moment. Your peppers are looking great,I was late sowing mine so hopefully they’ll catch up soon🤞. My lasagne pots are coming along nicely, the tulips will soon be in flower. I love this time of year with all the new growth appearing, thanks for the tour. Please can we see the magnolia stellata when it’s fully showing off! 😊
Thank you! Yes I'm really pleased with the peppers so far this year 😁 I will certainly make sure I get some nice footage of the magnolia 🤍
Always love when you post a new video. ~Mary
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😁
very calming and varied content. Thank you for your time and effort!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed the video 😀
lovely! we've been thinking about quail for a while now. possibly in the greenhouse as the weather here is shocking. What do you think about keeping quail in greenhouses?
Good luck with getting your own quails! We wouldn’t probably be able to do that in our hotter English weather but winter maybe ok for us ☺️
