Forging an integral bolster knife

In today’s video I take an old unfinished project, and I try to forge it into an integral bolster knife. This was my first time forging something like it so there are many things I could have done differently. But let me know what you think down in the comments! #forging #forged #knife #nolan’s knives #bladesmith #diy #forgedknives #knifemaking #sharp #sharpening #13yearoldblacksmith #blacksmit...

Crocs are completely insane as a blacksmith. Awesome work for your age though. Definitely keep it up!
@@rebel4466 😂 Thank you! Now that i’m a little further along in my craft i’m starting to realize that I should be taking my safety a lot more seriously 😬😅
awesome parang Nolan
@@vladimirkovacevic1656 Thanks!
How did you remove the epoxy that came out of the front of the handle? It’s impossible to sand without ruining the finish of the knife, i had this problem withmy first knife but i see you sonehow did it…
@@druidobianco9734 Good question! This was something I struggled with for awhile also. The trick I figured out is before you epoxy the scales on, Hand sand the very front area that is closest to the knife to its final polish. Then once you have it all epoxied and clamped up, before the epoxy hardens use a qtip or paper towel with some acetone. It should wipe the epoxy right off the blade. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and i’ll try my best and help! Thanks for watching!
@@NolansKnives thanks for the answer! That’s the same thing i did, but the resoult was not perfect, so the method is right but i probably need some more practice. I’ll keep following you 😁
Turned out great. One suggestion though and that is work at a higher heat. Sure you can muscle through it but the possibility of developing cracks or putting significantly more wear and tear on your body isn't worth it in my opinion. Waiting that extra bit to get your steel good and hot will reduce the amount of time you need to hammer and throw it back in the fire once it's starting to cool. If you throw it in the forge with a bit of heat left in it it'll heat up faster as well.
@@cae2487 Great tips! Thank you so much for sharing, I will definitely start putting those to use!
Now give it me so I can beat it in ways that would never happen and we will call you the forged in fire champ

Very nice and inspiring ❤ love the things that can be achieved with just a piece of rebar. ❤👏👏👏
@@HanselJimenezRivasThank you!
Now this is pretty cool! Where do you get your scrap steel, and how do you know if it's high carbon? I've been smithing for a while, but I mostly just use spring steel.
Thank you! In this specific piece I made here I didn’t use high carbon steel due to it just being a simple little decoration. However when I do use high carbon steel for my knives I have been very blessed and some friends have given me leaf spring steel or ball bearing steel. Or sometimes I will just find random pieces of metal here and there. Now to test If the steel is high carbon I will do two different kinds of tests. The first one is a spark test where I will use a cutoff wheel on my angle grinder and cut a line in the steel. If the sparks are a super bright yellow or almost white, with little explosions that look like mini fireworks this will be an indication of high carbon steel. The second test I like to do is cut off a small piece off of whatever steel I want to use, then I will forge this down into a thin rectangular piece. Then I will heat it up to critical temperature and quench it to see if it will harden. Some ways to tell if it’s truly hard is to cut a small notch in the side and clamp half of it in a vise and hit the top with a hammer. If it’s hard it should snap right off. Another way to tell if it’s hard is to grind off the de-carb and create a sharp corner on one side and try and use it to scratch glass. If it diggs in and leave marks in the glass it is hard. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Hermoso, gran trabajo 🎉😊
Give me an acre of dead wood and this blade and watch a kid being born all over. This chunk of steel would put a smile on this old dog's face a mile wide. Outstanding job Sir
