      Man I really appreciate this! I love hearing when people can appreciate the hard work I put into things. It took me probably two years of practice to get decent at it, but I would say I still have lots of room for improvement! Thank you for commenting, and good luck with your knives!

    very nice the thing I could add is that you might want to set up some sort of clamping system for the drill press, just to save on the cost of band aids.

    What happens with the blade if you're quenching your knife with water?

    • @NolansKnives
      @NolansKnives  6 місяців тому

      A few things could happen when quenching in water, the main reason people don’t like to quench is it actually cools down the material too fast. Say if you’re quenching a knife you don’t want to quench it in water because it will cool down the knife just slightly faster than oil, this causes a much greater chance of severe warping and possibly cracking. It is possible for water quenching to work but it is much less likely than using something like oil. Now water quenching when successful can provide a slightly higher hrc than something like oil, this is why hammers and other large pieces of steel are quenched in water, because hammers can’t warp and have a less of a chance to crack due to a much larger mass. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

      Thank you. It really helps! I want to forge weapons and tools too, and your advice is usefull. I live near a railroad and an old construction site, so there are a lot of thic rusty steel screws and old rebar. I collected tons of metal bolts so I think it's a good start. I'm only 12 but it cannot be that hard, all I need is some patience. I forged a small knife (it snaped in half when I was tring to adjust it's shape, so it's really short), a flat blade and a hook. My great-grandpa was a blacksmith too, but all his tools were sold, so now I have to buy tools and other essential stuff, but untill then I'd really apreciate if you'll give me some advice sometimes. I used water for quenching but if the piece of metal it's not that big and the temperature is a bit lower I think the risk it's not that high. Thank you again for the advice. I'm actually romanian so this stupid text was more difficult to write than making a handle, and I know you didn't asked but I don't give a sh#t. Have a nice day.

      @@Hayden.s_right_hand That’s awesome man! I started blacksmithing when I was 11 so you totally got this💪 Sounds like you have some pretty good knowledge already and I am super happy to help whenever you have questions! Also be careful with the rebar and bolts, they are great practice and super fun to work with but they tend to be a low carbon steel. This makes them not the most reliable knives, so if you are able to I would use an angle grinder to spark test them to see if it’s high carbon steel or not. The easy way to tell is if the sparks are long and a dark orange color they are low carbon steel and won’t be able to be hardened, and if the sparks are bright yellow and kind of explode like fire little tiny fire works they are high carbon. Sounds like you have a great start and I wish you the best of luck!! I hope this helps a little and feel free to ask any questions!

      I used a round automatic stone grinder when I was sharpening a flat piece of rebar and the sparks were yellow. However the metal is pretty soft. I'll watch some videos.
