How To Clean Snow & Ice Off Your Climbing Skins When Ski Touring
Learn 3 ways to solve the common ski touring problem of climbing skins no longer sticking. Rene-Martin shares his best 3 tips to get your skins sticking to your skis. To avoid having problems with your skin glue, you should always address each issue as it arises.
When snow gets wedged between your ski and climbing skin, that's when problems begin and you risk not having a good time if you don't correct the problem immediately. Make sure your climbing skin is properly installed on your ski before you drop it on the snow. Your clips should have the right tension. The skin must be properly aligned on the ski. Noce you're climbing, check your tail hook every now and then. Check you ski partner's hooks too. They'll thank you for it.
In this video, professional backcountry guide and ski-touring instructor Rene-Martin Trudel shares his secret recipe for all beginner, novice and expert backcountry skiers to do! The tutorial applies to split-board, telemark, and alpine touring equipment. You will definitely travel more efficiently on the snow and in the mountains and have lots more fun!
3 WAYS TO CLEAN SNOW OFF YOUR CLIMBING SKINS
OPTION 1
Rub the climbing skin on your pants in a sliding motion. If the glue wont stick and is iced up, rub the glue side down on your pants. If the skin is iced up, rub the fuzzy side down on your pants.
OPTION 2
Rub the climbing skin on your ski edge. ou can use your ski's edge as a light scraper by gliding the skin perpendicularly to the ski. This is really good for removing ice.
OPTION 3
Fold the climbing skins and put them inside your jacket, close to your core. Then, get active. Boot pack part of the way to increase your body heat. The heat you'll produce will soften the glue and make more tacky. Tacky enough to stick to ski again.

It’s a helpful video! Thanks, bro
Hi how about the skis without the grove to clip the other end of the skis. Have my BD impulse.ty
What’s I’m just using it for approach skis
thanks for the video !
All good, however, on steeper terrain and for those of us who are less strong and flexible - ok, let's just say older - there is the technique of driving the uphill, kicking ski tail beneath the middle (under the foot of) the downhill, platform ski, and continuing to rotate the uphill ski as far as possible across the fall line. The two feet are then closer together, making it easier to transfer weight onto the uphill ski and lift the downhill ski off the buried tail of the uphill ski and to bring it around. Sounds odd but works well and lots of people do it this way. On seriously steep terrain there is no replacement for the downhill-facing kick turn which permits a full 180 degree turn across that steep fall-line, but of course this is less efficient.
minion munching on dirt and rocks
Here's a tip. Pace yourself. That pace you're going in some shots is unlikely to be maintained for hours. Lol
Those tail clips are so mickey mouse. Since late 80s I and friends have used the webbing/fastex buckle system. Never does a skin come off by itself. Fastex buckle is attached a ways behind binding, tail of skin has 1" webbing sewn or riveted on, with male half of fastex buckle on a long enough piece of webbing to reach female part you've attached to the ski. Use short piece of webbing thru it, screwed to upper side of ski, maybe 6" behind binding.
Awesome video, thanks for making it!
What a legend!
6:47 , I'll try it. Sounds effective. Never too old to learn. And the rest: I see those mistakes regulary.
Great vid!
In that terrain with so many trees would snow shoes be better?
If you are skiing, the most efficient way to get around is using your skis with skins. Every step you take has a little glide... and for every step you take, you have a marginal gain over snowshoes.
Loved it. Good advice.
Shit vid
Why do you put your poles in the snow upside down?
To survey the snowpack depth and to see if there are any crusts underneath.
Do Skins Stick on Waxed Skis? Or do you have to go wax-less?
Yes they do. The glue is formulated for that. However, if you want to keep your wax pristine, then skins will not help. It is often a compromise of convenience, performance, and durability,
Holly Sh+t There is Sasquatch walking in woods behind you. 5:12 What part of Canada are you in?

Very good❤

What a wonderful set of videos you've created for a beginner like me! I'm an intermediate downhill skiier, but I was just outside in my flat suburban backyard trying out my first ever pair of backcountry skis. I sure was glad I hadn't gone to a local park/hill/trail because there were a LOT of steps that I couldn't do at first! With determination and practice I accomplished some of them, but I hoped that someone had UA-camd these very beginning skills so I could learn the others without feeling do lost! You did that and more; thank you so very much! Now I'm looking forward to another practice day in my back yard. Who would have thought backyard skiing could be so exciting. But with the confidence inspired by your demonstrations, I can envision years of pleasure backcountry skiing! All the best to you, 69 year old alpinewal
Had my Völkl Nanuq skins for 9 or 10 years now and they're still just as good. Never done anything with them apart from always using mesh when they're not on the skis.
You keep doing things while talking about something else, and then hop in and say "btw assemble this" or do that without showing it. Bad instructional video
Have a good winter!😊
Thanks bud. I'll be a first timer in the backcountry this year. I've flaked through some pretty knurled pow, and everything inbetween, but I've never owned skins or tracked on my skis. Is there a skin that doesn't rely on a sticky substance?
There have been some attempts. The challenge is surface contamination. Some manufacturers used a silicone-like surface to contact the ski. Glue is the most reliable, I've found.
Dude .........keeping the glue warm is the trick ..........I didn't know but now I do thanks that was my question.
Outstanding
I couldnt help to notice that you are using telemark skii bots with tech bindings. LOL a weird setup if i may
Thanks
Outstanding
Sorry, l lost you at 3:28 😻💔 l'm considering getting a pair of climbing skins; they'll hopefully make my life less miserable when going up 😅Thanks for the video! 😊
Basically, when you line up your skins and expose the ski edges, it does not really matter if you have more space on one side than the other. As long as the edge is exposed completely.
Why do you use tele boots?
I am also a Telemark instructor. AbsoluteTelemark.com
AND others say let your skis submarine,,, your not lifting and not working as hard....you tube sux everybody has diff opinion on how to it the EXPERT RIGHT WAY my way is the best....ect. NO go out and try it for the conditions....
The reason submarining is more tiresome, is that your shin is forced to push the snow too as you advance. We've found it easier to glide the ski on top of the snow.
Am I correct in assuming that to convert my downhill parabola's to do this, I need 1. new bindings, 2. new boots (and skins obviously?)? Or are my skis too heavy?
You can use your alpine skis if you like, but having a dedicated ski touring kit is best.
Wow I'm impressed with the level of detail in this video. Nicely done.
I’m so glad I learned all this stuff on my own and didn’t force myself to use a lot of these tips that don’t work for me.
i just glue them together with each other. then none of the glue is exposed. had a old pair that i kept folded for a bit too long, and that one seperated in the fold. so now i hang mine up by the tip hook
I just went skiing and ski touring for the first time last weekend. It was fun but I didn't get very far up the hill. I had to stick to the relatively level road area. This was very clear and informative. Thank you so much! Can you tell me what kind of bindings you have on those skis with both the heel risers and the lock? That looks like a useful option compared to my universal pivot binding if I'm willing to commit to a ski boot.
If you plan your skin track properly, you shouldn't find yourself in positions where you're forced to lose elevation. Also, while breaking skin track, I like to be in the highest lift mode, It allows me to set a steeper track and keep the tip position in a way that I don't have to re-take the same step to break through the snow.
Great video! I was given the same good advice when off track skiing n Finland. You are doing this in lovely powder conditions but on icier surfaces I would add a push down on the sliding ski at the end of the slide, into the snow, to enable more grip from the skins. This can avoid any sliding backwards which I find very awkward and discouraging, as it not only means your climbing the same bit twice but losing height at the same time. As you say, efficiency is the name of the game. cheers ps where are you skiing?
Great tips. I gotta ask, though, what boot/binding setup is that? It looks like you can ski tele or alpine style with those. Id be interested in learning about those
This is my least favorite thing to do lol so sketch
Lots of errors sorry bro ! 😢
Storing skins sealed in a bag in a chest freezer over the summer can reduce glue oxidation significantly.
If my skins doubled over like that, it would take an army to pull it apart...
Great video! Yes! For sure stand up and trust your skins! Putting all your weight the front of the ski is going to pull the rug out from under you. Those folks who insist of putting in a steep skin track with terrible switchbacks have "Steep Disease" Its common here in the Wasatch. I was out today and put in a new corner on the upper part of the track on a well used skin track because they went straight up in a corner right next to a tree. When we are hiking dirt trails, we have a tendency to lean into steep sections of trail. But that is self defeating on skins. I always keep my line of sight forward when going up steeps. Yes put those risers down on the flats! I have found, even on mellow terrain, when the snow is deep, being in your low riser makes the rear of the ski sink and brings the tip to the surface when breaking trail. It's like putting the board into 4 wheel drive. Really enjoyed this! Pray 4 snow!
