Best coaching on this subject EVER. Thank you. One thing I do differently… I drive to the trailhead parking lot with my skins on the skis, binding already in touring mode, and a Voile strap holding my skis and poles tightly for easy carry (dynafit bindings no brake only leash). Usually don’t even have a backpack if I’m making two laps, I’m home by lunch. If it’s going to be a Full day or multi day, yes backpack.

What a wonderful set of videos you've created for a beginner like me! I'm an intermediate downhill skiier, but I was just outside in my flat suburban backyard trying out my first ever pair of backcountry skis. I sure was glad I hadn't gone to a local park/hill/trail because there were a LOT of steps that I couldn't do at first! With determination and practice I accomplished some of them, but I hoped that someone had UA-camd these very beginning skills so I could learn the others without feeling do lost! You did that and more; thank you so very much!
Now I'm looking forward to another practice day in my back yard. Who would have thought backyard skiing could be so exciting. But with the confidence inspired by your demonstrations, I can envision years of pleasure backcountry skiing!

Very good video. Good to know and a good refresh. (There is a lot of good informations). If I may add something. At the beginning of the season, alway scrap or remove the wax to prevent contamination of the glue of the skins. Have a good season.

Basically, when you line up your skins and expose the ski edges, it does not really matter if you have more space on one side than the other. As long as the edge is exposed completely.

Really clear and well-done vid! Have one question: I've heard the glue last lass if you fold the skins on each other (glue to glue) is that true? Isn't it better to roll them (glue on skin) or put them on their plastic foil? Thanks

Never roll your skins, fold them glue-to-glue to keep contaminants out. You should avoid putting anything other than your ski or the skin glue in contact with the skin glue. Just got Pomoca 2.0 mohair and synthetic combo yellow skins. First time ever doing it and on a groomed mild steepness. I don’t see the glide. They don’t glide at all. Sure I can move forward but it’s like gliding on a carpet. Sure they won’t glide like cross country skis. But there is no glide at all. Is that normal? Yeah they stick well but moving forward is difficult.
Yes this is normal. All skins are not gliding that well. So in perspective, some glide better than other. Yellow is Pomoca least gliding skins.
Am I correct in assuming that to convert my downhill parabola's to do this, I need 1. new bindings, 2. new boots (and skins obviously?)? Or are my skis too heavy?
You can use your alpine skis if you like, but having a dedicated ski touring kit is best.
how long do ski skins usually last?
You can easily get 5 years of service from them or about 200 days. We've seen some last over 20 years. And we've seen some last less than a season. It comes down to wear & tear, and care.
Do Skins Stick on Waxed Skis? Or do you have to go wax-less?
Yes they do. The glue is formulated for that. However, if you want to keep your wax pristine, then skins will not help. It is often a compromise of convenience, performance, and durability,

Tip Nr.1 put your skin on your skis at home. It safes time and your ready to go.
We've been caught by this trick. Hot skis, with hot skins make for a softened adhesive stronger bond. When we transition to ski mode after climbing with them, the skins are more difficult to remove. Ideally, put cold skins on a cold ski.
I used to do this too but if it is too warm then the adhesive doesn't come off your ski base as well. It's a good idea in theory but not good for the overall longevity of your ski bases. I had to use chemicals to remove the adhesive and despite skiing countless times since still have a few small sticky spots to my bases from leaving skins on too long/warm
