Making Peace With Fallout 4
I found Fallout 4 disappointing when I played it on release in 2015. Now, with the passage of time and the benefit of hindsight, can I return to the game and make my peace with what it is instead of what it's not?

Why is the storytelling so bad in Tears of the Kingdom?

Bowser's Fury - a new approach to Mario?

Bowser's Fury is an experiment in applying the Mario formula to an open world concept. It's mostly successful with one big caveat. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and The Mandalorian are backwards

I love voiced protagonist in FO4 and I hate the unvoiced one in Starfield. The protagonist being silent is also one of the few complaints I have with BG3, dialogs just don't have as much impact when your lines are silent.
So many video essays on "making peace" or "learning to love" Fallout 4. It's a lot simpler to just say you enjoy a game that isn't as good as previous entries in the franchise. You don't have to try to justify it. I love it (with loads of mods), and that's okay. Some people hate it, and that's okay too. You don't have to make an entire essay to justify what you like. Edit: That ptobably came off rude, which was the my intent. More so encouraging people to stop feeling like they have to justify something because people won't like it.
This has nothing to do with justifying anything to anybody. I was working through my own complicated and conflicted feelings on a game I don't love from a series that I do which seems to be an experience a lot of people have had. I think that validates the exercise on some level though clearly not for you which is fine. To me a big positive of the video essay format is that there's time and space to explore nuance and contradiction instead of always simplifying everything into easily digestible takes. All the rest of social media does that and the world is worse for it.
My biggest problem with the game is I can’t see shit, there’s always some scrub in the way
Your suggestion does a lot to help connect the game to prior themes of rebuilding, renewal, changing the path humanity is on away from war or heading right towards it, all over again and in turn, would have been a great follow-up to Lonesome Road. Carrying the better part of the old world on and leaving behind what destroyed it in the past where it belongs.
It definitely sounds like FO4 with Sims Settlements 2-all three chapters could make it one of your favorite games, hehe. You should check it out. It adds dozens of hours of new content, quests, new workshop items and abilities, and it makes settlement building an integral part of the game! :)
these are wonderful videos keep it up man, love to see your fallout 4 vid get some love these ones from years ago though are stupendous, very quality shit im a fan
I personally loved fallout 4 but as someone who got introduced to the series through fallout 3 and NV I was so taken aback by the lack of narrative character freedom In the past games I could be anything! Courier and Vault Dweller were just titles, in fallout 4 I was just a parent despite how far I strayed, my whole purpose was to find my son and be a parent, my whole character was just Nora or Nate + so I’m glad you mentioned how predetermined everything felt aside from the ending
You are taking it too seriously, man... it's just a game, not the movie you always want to write and direct... you just interact with the history and it elements... so, choose you own adventure!
Todd saw us playing Skyrim for 10 years and then interpreted that to mean that we WANT to play the same game for that long, rather than it being a simple function of Bethesda's release schedule.
Im enjoying TOTK but its the first time since the original 2 games I didnt care about the story. Gameplay is still solid. Best story is still Ocarina although its just the heros journey.
Honestly the Fallout 4 story and the amount of player choice isn't even that bad compared to New Vegas. The biggest issue is the world building and Bethesda's obsession with having the player rebuild broken factions. None of the Fallout 4 factions have any believable in universe explanation for how, or even why, they exist. The "200 years in the fridge" is a microcosm for their inept world building. How is everything still this fucked up after 200 years?
For the first time in my life i feel so disconnected from the Zelda franchise. Lost. Silly arguments like no music in the over world because it would be annoying. Since the switch came out I thought I’d try xenoblade and it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made I love it. Fantastic storytelling and gorgeous music all the time!
Bruh literally just play on survival with mods to turn on fast travel or with the Boston tunnels mod (all which are available on all platforms, let alone sim settlements which basically answers your critique of the minutemen and mirroring what you think the game should be). This is coming from a new Vegas guy who hates a lot about fo4, but these simple, ubiquitously available changes make the game 1000% better
My goal wasn't to critique the game "fixed" with mods. It was to critique the officially sanctioned base experience that Bethesda put out.
Deserves way more views.
Season one was worth it just for the reveal that the ancient sword was a key to activate a mechanism that would destroy a dam, and that this was employed to detonate Mt. Doom. I was watching with wide eyes, mouth open, edge of my seat, and I belly laughed when it erupted. Absolute camp. It's a fun show, but even without caring that much about fidelity to the lore it can be painful. Season two felt like a big step down in a lot of ways. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on it.
"Next stop, the Railroad. Choo-Choooo..."
I did not like NV at all. And the 'writing' is overrated. I may even make a video about this. 🤔
Stop whining and just play it on survival mode
When I first played Fallout 4, I didn't like it because it felt more like a FPS. I had to replay it consistently to get it over my head that it wasn't exactly an RPG like New Vegas was, but it was trying to be as different as that game, (or at least that's what I was thinking about.) and my enjoyment of the game skyrocketed when I came to that conclusion.
The worst part about Fallout 4 is one I noticed before the game even released when they did a game play reveal. I was beyond disappointed when they revealed the main plot was basically a (poor) rehash of Fallout 3's main quest. Family member gone, Find Family Member, and than you get introduced to the big faction (Fallout 3 being the Brotherhood Fallout 4 being the institute). I still had fun with 4, but if they did a Fallout NV level story with deep, world impacting choices with Fallout 4's game play it would've been my GotY without a doubt.
As usual, it's Emil Pagliarulo's fault.
Loved the Fallout series since the first game in 1997 (I was in high school). Amazing games except for 3, 4 and 76 (notice that they have something in common?). Very underwhelming games.
Fallout 3 and 4 feel more like 50 years after nuclear war and not 200. Therez also an over reliance on The West Coast Game's stories. The East Coast is a copy paste with Deathclaws, Super Mutants, The Enclave. They should have had their own factions. Fallout 3 does use the Enclave well. Fallout 4 should not have had this recent most update with them. F3 and F4 shouldn't have had Super Mutants at all. Ghouls looked their best in F3/NV. Raises in F3 and F4 should have been more like FNV with no basic non-named gang raiders.
Ah yes, the 'modern' video game problem (2015) for a modern video game playing person (2024). Thus the pursue for perfection will never end because in the future where games needs to be as immersive as possible, as closely to real life as much as a single dust gets in player eye makes vision blurry (for immersion) so in firefight you'll likely spend half of it healing and rubbing your eyes with grease and blood now making it worse. Therefore game sucks!
I got a love hate relationship with the encumberance system. It's necessary for a survival/apocalypse type game like fallout. 1. You will ruin the economics of the game if you can carry everything like you said. Because you have unlimited ammo, heals, junk armors and weapons to sell on whim. You Effectively have kinda a demi god mode on. You aren't invincible, but youll never be hurting for supplies. 2. I always felt the 3D fallout games have just too low of a weight limit for how much useful stuff that is around. Even with max strength, you can only carry a couple hundred pounds of equipment. While in real life you probably wouldnt be able to reliably carry that much, in a video game it's just not enough. Especially if bullets and aid items have weight ontop of armor and weapons which are super heavy by themselves. Stack misc resource items ontop of that, and you'll be struggling with carry weight the whole game. Recently with on my chars in fallout 3, NV, and 4, I just give myself alot more carryweight. It's just too tedious to be juggling the weight capacity as you explore and fight. It never really messes you up in combat, just kind of slows you down while you loot after you cleared an area. You gotta stop, fast travel or sprint to a base/house/ place to store your stuff, then travel back to that area to finish looting. It's just time consuming.
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; -Romans 3:23 And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. - Jeremiah 29:13 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life. -John 3:16 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out. - Acts 3:19 If you’re in North America, please go check out any of the churches available to you: PCA, OPC, Rpcna, Urcna, or a Canrc church. I do hope fallout five if it happens draws on the mechanics of all the games
Reasonable criticisms. I have only played FO4 so I dont know what im missing. I simply love the world, the loop, the escapsim.
It's speculated that Billy hid in the fridge recently from nearby explosions. He never actually says he's been in there since the war. The way he and his parents act makes sense if he's only been gone a few days.
Several others have brought this up. The game is pretty clear that he's most likely been there since the Great War. He talks about hearing sirens, he mentions how the highways are destroyed now and everything is wrecked none of which is recent. The parents also have dialog strongly suggesting that it's been 200+ years. The fan theory makes more sense, of course but I think it's just excusing dumb writing. The game is not that subtle.
Fallout 4 is fun but i cant stop thinking of all the things that could be.
Thanks for all the hard work that you clearly put into this! 👍 EDIT: Subbed
Get over yourself and stop whinging like a bitch
They're allowed to have an opinion, nor are they whining. You're the only one who needs to get over yourself, also you clearly need to grow up.
Unpopular opinion: ToTKs story and storytelling were a million times better than BoTWs
I play Fallout 1 & 2 for pure enjoyment. Nev Vegas for the story and interest quests. Fallout 4 with infinite replayability. And Fallout 3 to just goof around.
I think what would have helped this game is a longer pre war section. Make it a week, and have a few things happen. One, vault tech guy, week makes it more believable they can get in the vault. Two, a small section to introduce base building as a core game mechanic, something small but enough to have players know the system is there. Three, enough interactions between Nate, Nora, and Shaun to give players a connection the game says is there. Now, it is a toss up whether this would work well. Idk for sure, but maybe it could have helped. And, for my overall thoughts on F4, I like it, in the same way I like Skyrim. I still play both games because they give me something not many other games do. In Skyrim, it’s the magic and exploring part of a fantasy setting I like. For F4, it’s partly the exploration of a post apocalyptic world, and the chance to roleplay a little with base building as trying to rebuild some part of the world. And it’s that last part I think F4 has as a strong suit, exploring pre war ruins, finding parts and supplies and old tech, so you can rebuild. At least, I feel it’s a strong part of the game. And that’s why I still play F4, at least part of why
My opinion on the games ultimately comes down to this: Is it fun for me, mechanically, as a player? For Fallout 4 the answer is yes. It has a great world space, fun combat system (nothing amazing, but still quite enjoyable), good dungeons, and plenty of all of that. I enjoy the characters, I think the plots are interesting enough, etc. For NV the answer is no. The world space is big and very empty, which negatively affects combat scenarios because they often become firefights in large empty open areas, the dungeons while good are fewer in number (often having multiple quests associated with them, meaning 3 quests have the content of 1). I also find the characters preachy and annoying, so interested in providing their philosophical worldview and "humour" that they almost forget to be characters at times. I often find myself wondering if my interpretation of the characters is coloured by my gameplay experiences, however.
14:51 Also disagree with this. Courtenay Taylor's performance is honestly one of the better parts of FO4. I'd take that over Fallout 3 any day. Won't compare with FONV because that was a different team of writers anyway - hardly a 1:1 comparison.
20:17 Honestly, I kind of liked the brief moments when the player character would mention something about a location pre-war, or how their past life related to it. I guess I don't mind playing an RPG with a character that isn't 100% made up by me. I just wish the writing in FO4 had been a bit better about that.
I’m replaying fallout 4 now actually and I must say I agree with mostly everything you’ve said. It is the best gameplay wise. But it was a struggle for me. The first act of the game is a slog… it’s just so slow… so much walking… then mid game happens and the more linear aspect starts to slightly fade and I can enjoy the fun combat with a leveled character and some of the side quests are genuinely really fun for me. Nicks story and personal quest plus the extra bits with the far harbor dlc make that among one of my favorite parts. The story of curie is really sweet. Paladin dance to me is a really interesting character and his synth identity reveal adds a lot to the brotherhood story for me which says a lot cuz it isn’t really much… I find the brotherhood just super boring in fallout 4 so really anything could add to it lol. Also I can’t lie… soemthing that’s helped me play this again is by kinda just going fast. I wanted to play fallout in reverse. I’ve played all of them except the OG and 2. And fallout 4 is the worst to me not bc it’s actually “the worst” but it’s just kinda boring… playing the very very first time when I was 16 in highschool was amazing. Loved this game. But I’ve been spoiled by game pass which has allowed me to play older games as well as some modern classics in the rpg category. In contrast it just makes it so so so hard to replay. I’m getting into it now. But that’s cuz I’m level 50 with cool weapons now and power armor I never leave behind lol. It’s fun… NOW lol… the first 16 hours I won’t do again tbh :/. This is my last time playing fallout 4 simply cuz the first act is just painfully slow and uneventful. Fallout new vegas even in the opening at good spring ur choices matter. Whereas in fallout 4 ur choices don’t really matter AT ALL till the end lol. Which in of itself like you said isn’t a issue. But when I think of fallout I think meaningful choices. Even if small ones. But there is just none lol… and I’m a dialogue fiend but none is present 😭
fallout 5 will be the best
Not if they don't learn from the many short-comings of Starfield.
Through modding, i've turned Fallout 4 from a RPG/FPS hybrid to a gun porn post apocalypse survival milsim / collectathon, all with every texture retextured into something more high res, with beautiful animations and much more, pretty much all from the ground up. The one good thing that i can REALLY REALLY say about fallout 4 is through modding, it can be pretty much whatever you want it to be. Its just up to you to make your own fun, and its up to you to make your own dream fallout, whatever that is.
🐟👍
In my opinion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas's aesthetic overall far beats Fallout 4's. There's so much grit and edge to both of those games. It almost envelopes you into a different, somewhat alien world. Fallout 4 feels more natural, yet somehow, more bleak and uninteresting. I feel like a big part of that was the art direction for the game overall. It just makes me not want to explore and engage with the world as much as I would with Fallout 3 or New Vegas.
You got a bright future bro
Bro its just a game. Grow up buddy! Go outside
bros never heard of a video essay
It might sound insane to you but ppl can critique media in depth and still have fulfilling lives outside! Crazy I know
Fallout 4 is... okay to me. The main story is pretty weak, but that's true of pretty much every Bethesda open world game. The settlement building is fine. Not fun, but it's fine. The radient settlement quests are okay. Not great, again. But serviceable and can be kind of fun. And yeah, I know a lot of people love to hate on the laser musket you get at the start of the game. But despite how stupid a crank powered laser rifle that still uses ammunition supplies up is... I unironically love the laser musket.
the kid trapped in the fridge it was never said he was in there pre war
Yes he was. It's very obvious from the dialog from him and his parents.
Bethesda has deposited the agreed amount to your account.
The problem with Bethesda is that when they are making a game, they're not trying fulfil a vision, they are trying to make a game that people will like and that will sell well. Individual parts of Bethesda might be working towards their vision of what they want but their isn't a central vision or if their is that vision only involve trying to do what's successful in other games.
After Starfield i really miss the more cinematic approach of the camera Fo 4 had. Sure it wasn't Red dead 2 which most games aren't, but with the new improved models and facial animation Starfield has, could have worked better.
