    Do you have an example of a body scan meditation on your channel, or can it only be learned at a retreat? I've done some guided body scan meditations that are available on UA-cam, but I didn't find them all that beneficial. Take care!

    • @Vipassanawithkhalid
      @Vipassanawithkhalid День тому

      I mean the technique itself is a body scan so it won't be much different. Went give to a 10 day is so important is so that you can sharpen your mind so much that you can start to feel very subtle sensations in your body. This is when body scanning becomes a lot more engaging and fun. Being able to feel dozens of sensations on a small area of the body, like a couple of inches, is only possible after intensive training. That's why I don't have any guided body scan meditations on here. Because most people won't find them beneficial and won't even know what I'm talking about. So yeah, you have to go to the retreat to get started on this mediation technique. Otherwise I suggest you just do breath meditation. That's more beneficial for a beginners mind. Here's a link: m.ua-cam.com/video/Oh5ii6R6LTM/v-deo.html&pp=ygUOZ29lbmthIGFuYXBhbmE%3D This is the teacher that teaches the 10 day courses. I would recommend focusing on this breath meditation until you can make it to a 10 day course Best of luck to you!

      I try my best to do my 2 hours a day. And then throughout the day as well. For my 10 minute breaks at work, and half my lunch I'll try to meditate. I also try to prescribe sampajanna throughout the day, no matter what I'm doing. So I try to meditate as much as I can. I am currently working on replacing doom scrolling with meditation. For an hour or two a day I'll be watching shows, or scrolling Instagram, or watching UA-cam videos. I want to replace most of that with more meditation. I find the more I invest, the more I get out of the practice. I don't want to be a monk or anything, but every free moment I want to be meditating. Either sampajanna while doing things, or closed eyes serious meditation when it works.

      @@Vipassanawithkhalid I have some solutions that may be helpful in supporting that intention. If anything doesn’t help or apply to you, then please ignore! 🙏🏼 If you use iPhone & Mac it can help to set a screen time limit on both for a certain number of minutes for these apps, like 15min/day. And then--and this part is crucial-setup a passcode to secure screen time settings and only allow a trusted friend or family member to have that screen time passcode, NOT you. This way you put a strong boundary in that prevents you from indulging in more than 15min/day consuming this addictive content. The inner addict is like Sméagol/golum from Lord of the Rings. It can be trusted to choose the right thing on its own. Needs tough love in supporting it in abstaining from addictions and choosing healthier alternatives. Letting someone else have the passcode is so liberating, if you can have the humility to take this route. However if you don’t have iPhone & Mac, you’ll have to find a different way to do this. I use a slightly different method. My mindset is that I literally NEVER need to access Instagram or Facebook or anything from my phone. If I do I can access on my computer where it is easier to control access to them. So I bought this plastic cube called a Brick lets you block designated apps after scanning the block. And I block social media apps on my iPhone. And put the brick in a hard to get place in my house, like the basement in a box somewhere. And then I agree with myself to use only the computer for these websites. So now the battle is focused in one area and the rest of the time I’m out and about I’m free. Indulging in social media all throughout the day in gaps of time is disastrous in addicting the mind. On my computer I use a free chrome extension called “Stayfocusd” which lets me allot certain amount of times for certain websites, like 15/min a day, and then blocks them. It works really well. To unblock you have to type out a long predetermined message without mistakes. And you can set this message. So you can make your future self type in like “I am committed to being free from addictions. I know that craving can overwhelm the mind and convince me that I want what it wants. But I won’t give in..” etc. so that way you really reinforce a healthier mindset in those moments of craving, and give yourself support to wake up and say no. It works. I also use a chrome extension called “Unhook” which lets me toggle off the addictive features of UA-cam (there’s another one called Clean UA-cam that does the same it looks like). With one click at a time you can choose things to turn off like the comment section, suggested videos, home feed. This has helped a TON. Seriously. Such a relief to be free from those and I can turn them back on whenever needed. I recently found another chrome extension called “News Feed Eradicator” that lets you block the feed portion of which social site you designate, like Reddit, instagram, Facebook etc. it puts an inspiring quote in place of the feed. This removed the most addicting part of the apps while letting you have the other features. I like this idea because you can just write down a handful of pages you like to stay updated on and go straight to those instagram or Facebook pages without getting sucked into the quicksand of the “Infinity Pools” that hooks you and addicts you the most. Having said all this, I think app solutions should still be considered a backup defense and not the main line of defense. I think doing mindfulness the moment you feel a craving to distract, and finding healthier ways to meet that need, is the main way to heal addictions. Also using negative visualizations to show your brain the harm of that choice, right as you get the craving, and then a positive visualization of a healthier choice, to help retrain brain to choose a healthier choice. This is so powerful when done right and helped me recover from really harmful habits. Lastly, it can help to reframe and realize that we probably shouldn’t have ANY time on these apps. They used to have cocaine in coke soda. Would you drink that if they reintroduced it? In the future they will look at these social media apps with algorithmically designed Infinite Feeds as addictive substances/drugs. Because they are. They hijack the reward circuitry and easily keep you hooked, draining your life and time, making everything else less enjoyable, planting & watering seeds of craving & aversion, and making you choose them over and over again even when you want to say no. This technology needs to be regulated and probably banned honestly, just like we banned putting cocaine in soda. We need new non-addictive forms of social media, that have friction in them to slow down consumption and limit overall consumption. And lead towards wholesome experiences and connections, not just addictive consumption. There’s a UA-cam video called “You Will Wish You Watched This Before You Started Using Social Media” by the channel Absolute Motivation that summarizes this incredibly well. 10 minutes. Excellent video and music that really emphasizes the solemnity of this epidemic. I’m sure you know most of this and have probably seen documentaries on it (like “The Social Dilemma”) but this was a great 10 min look at it. Hope this helps 🙏🏼

      I’ve got an Android phone, and it pretty much does everything you mentioned! Plus, I’ve been using this digital detox app that really helps me keep my screen time in check. I haven’t cluttered my web browser with too many distractions because I usually use it for work. I do watch some shows on there, though, so I might need to figure out how to balance that better! I totally agree that while apps can be super helpful, the main focus should really be on tackling the addiction itself. Meditation has been a lifesaver for me! It helps me realize just how draining social media can be, even though I still find myself scrolling mindlessly sometimes. I’ve made some good progress, and I feel like I’m so close to finally giving it up for good. It’s definitely a journey, but I’m all in! Finding that balance with technology and incorporating mindfulness has really been key for me. Here’s to hoping I can keep it up!

As long as you keep working at it paaaaaatiently and persistentlyyyy 😁 I’ve found the social media hard to cut out completely because one slip into the infinity pool and you can fill the mind with a dump truck full of craving & aversion that takes you 10 steps back. Thank you for you insights. I'm also working on responding instead of reacting, but it's so hard. Meditation doesn't seem to have helped much in terms of my patience, but I still practice on a daily basis.

    • @Vipassanawithkhalid
      @Vipassanawithkhalid 5 днів тому

      The benefits of meditation, like a lot of things, depends on how much effort you put in. Like for example, if you worked out for 10 minutes a day everyday, you'll get certain benefits, not a lot maybe not even noticeable but some. If you worked out for 1 to 2 hours a day everyday though, than you can more easily notice your progress across time. It's the same with meditation. If you just do it 10 minutes a day, the progress will be really slow and hard to notice and you might even wonder if there are any benefits. If you did it 1 to 2 hours a day, you'll notice the benefits across time more easily. Meditation does in fact help you be more patient, there is no question about that. If you're not noticing that benefit it's because you are not meditating enough or not meditating properly. I'm not telling you this to discourage you and tell you you're not working hard enough. But the reality is to get the most out of something, you have to invest a lot of time and energy into it. That's just the reality of how things are.

    You and your videos have been a great source of motivation for me to re-energize and deepen my own practice. I came across this video of yours a few weeks ago (some time after I had finished my second 10 day retreat following a gap of 6 long years). You are correct that Goenka mentioned the same thing but during the retreat it did not stick for me at the time because I felt it was superfluous and the meditation I was doing in the hall was more than plenty. It was only on day 10 once we were allowed to talk amongst ourselves that I noticed that my rooted-ness to the here and now, while pretty intense immediately following meditation, would wane pretty fast as time went on. As more weeks went by the feeling of being unprotected and naked in between two meditation sessions only grew for me. Finally yesterday as I left my house I decided I was going to be bodily-aware as I go about my day. The events of the day felt at once both more meaningful and like water off a duck's back. I felt more fearless about the things I needed to do and more fearful (in an alert way) about the things I should stay away from. My focus felt like it was apportioned and attuned more wisely such that all the important information from the day was in my brain with better recall and more insight. And of course through it all, as you demonstrated through your left toe exercise, I had a bedrock of serenity and openness to receive the people I interacted with. Vipassana is powerful and as Goneka said "Every step you take on this path bears fruit". Work-life balance has also been a great struggle for me and not feeling depleted after coming home has also felt like an impossible target for long so thanks a lot for sharing how Sampajana has helped you preserve yourself. Its a great motivation for me to commit to this even more. Focusing on my toe also did make me stay with this video longer than I would have with my restless mind and thanks to that I was able to make it to the invaluable part about improving my energy levels after work.

    • @Vipassanawithkhalid
      @Vipassanawithkhalid 2 місяці тому

      I relate to everything you just said. Sometimes you only notice the benefits when they are not there. You notice how rooted and calm you are when you stop meditating and have so much more anxiety. It's that old thing of taking things for granted. It becomes so normal that you often overlook it. Then when it's gone, you realize how twisted your perception was. Better to realize these things sooner and commit to a daily practice, even day long. I hope your journey these last few weeks with trying to be more aware of sensations in the body has gone well!

      I think noting beats attending a silent 10 day meditation course. You can find the link in any of my videos to attend. To break through, there's nothing more than practicing. The mechanic techniques themselves don't go deeper than what you've probably read about. At the 10 day, 3 and a half days are dedicated to breath meditation by focusing on the breath at the nostril area. Then the remaining days are being aware of bodily sensations. You've probably read about these two things. The real understanding comes from doing it 10-12 hours a day and seeing how to actually work. And getting your mind calmed down enough to actually experience a meditative state. So it's nothing mind boggling. There's no secret meditation techniques. There's no things you're probably not what familiar with. The only question is a matter of depth. The depth can only be achieved through continuity of practice. So if you have the time (the course is free) I would highly recommend you go.

      Everyone in my life knows that I meditate. I don't know about your life and your relations. But when everyone in my life knows that I meditate everyday, it's easy for them to know its time to meditate for me when they are over and spending a few nights. When they are over, I anyways try to give them some time to be by themselves as well. If we have dinner at 6 or 7, then maybe we continue to talk until 9. So then I will meditate from 9 to 10. It is rare, that if I have guests over, that we will be socializing until very late into the night. If it is the weekend, this is more likely. So I will meditate maybe at 4 or 5. Before dinner. This ensure that if we have late conversations after dinner, it is not a problem since i already meditated. It is okay if they are over for the weekend if they have a few hours to themselves here and there. I think they want that! So sometimes, when we are not actively socializing and watching a show or something, I will use this time to meditate as well. So my suggestions is, know that you will not be socializing with them 24/7 (maybe you do :D) so try to meditate during those times.

After a few breaths, go back to tomorrow breaths. Then normal. Alternate like this until you can consistently feel both breaths. You can also just accept your out breath is very subtle. Do any of the techniques I mentioned on just the in breath. It might help. I am glad to hear about your 10 day retreat! It was life changing for me and I hope it's very impactful for you as well.
