Due to this she has regressed in her training. Mostly I notice that she has been more nervous while in public which is very unusual for her. I was lucky to have a friend come and work on training with me, but I made a vlog out of it so I ...

I struggle with POTS and it is a condition that a lot of people do not understand. POTS is a condition that can turn into an invisible disability. So because you cannot see what POTS does to the body I thought I would explain it in a video to give you a basic understanding of what it is and how it affects the body.

Welcome back! I am going to college in January with my service dog in training. He is my 3rd, I've been training dogs since I was 6. I have a standard poodle and he is also doing puppy classes at petsmart. He is absolutely amazing and he is doing great. He has a great temperament. He was born in April 2024 so he will be 9 months old when we go to college. It is early for most dogs but due to his temperament, it will be okay. He isn't distracted by people, food, or other dogs. He has a solid focus in public and he has a perfect recall. If he makes a mistake, I can easily correct him. He is very laid back and he has a solid down stay. For most dogs 9 months would be very early, but he is different. He is only 4 months old and he is absolutely amazing. We have two trainers and they both agree that he should be trained well enough by January. He can already sit, stay, heel on and off leash, recall from a long distance, touch my hand, alert to my PTSD or anxiety, fetch my medicine, make eye contact, and much more. I didn't start his training until he was about 3 months old. I focused on desensitizing and socialization when I first got him. We live in the city so I took him outside to watch fireworks with me and he wasn't scared at all due to his early desensitization. I've played loud noises on my TV daily such as construction, thunder, fireworks, yelling, babies crying, dogs barking, and many other noises dogs would usually be afraid of. My dad and I took him on a walk for the first time last week and he did perfect. We walked through the river canal in downtown Oklahoma city, there were many bars with loud music and people, ducks, turtles, dogs, birds, kids, scooters, loud cars and motorcycles, and the boats that go down the canal. At first he was a bit afraid, every time he was a bit frightened I crouched down next to him and I gave him treats while he watched his surroundings so he knew everything was okay. After about 5 minutes, he wasn't scared at all. We went through the park near the myriad gardens and I noticed a splash pad. We walked over so I could train him in the water. It was very loud so I was expecting him to get scared of the noise or the water jets. He wasn't scared at all! I stood near the splash pad and I allowed him to decide if he wanted to go over or not. He continued to walk towards the water even when I stopped, so we went into the water together. It wasn't deep at all, it's just little sprinkler jets on a stone ground. As soon as he made it to the middle, he flopped down into the water. He loves laying in water. I let him chill out for a few minutes then I trained him a bit and he did great! I got him to put his paws on top of some benches and rocks to help build his confidence and he did great. There were some bike racks that looked like circles so I asked him to walk through, and he did. At first he was confused and he went around so I lured him through the first one, then he went through all of them. There is a part of the riverwalk that connects to a sidewalk in the city, there is a small bridge with a stream of water going under it, I jumped over it (it was about a foot wide and maybe 6 inches deep), I thought Carlito would jump over too but he didn't... He decided to walk in! I was very proud of him because he wasn't scared at all. We practiced how down stay, block, cover, and him laying under my legs while I sit down. He did excellent! We have only been working on his tasks for a week and he is already doing great. I got very lucky with him. My great uncles ex girlfriends daughter is an AKC breeder and she shows her dogs. Carlito was the runt of the litter and the smartest. I wanted a black female but there was only 1 and she had a deposit down already, so I chose him. He looks similar to my first service dog too! I love him dearly and I can't believe how well he is doing. I constantly get compliments on him, he amazes me daily. I just wish he would stop trying to slap me..

Wow, I love that you shined some light on some of the drawbacks or downsides to having a service dog. Service dogs can absolutely help with disabilities but it’s so important to realize that having one comes w obstacles and you have to determine if those drawbacks might cause you more problems than you are already dealing with. Sometimes the issues that come w owning, training and caring for (physically and financially) a service dog can make a persons life harder than it already is…. A great example of that is someone who is dealing with anxiety. The last thing they may want is many people approaching them every single time they go out in public to quickly run an errand or do something.

Is there any time that the service dog is provided for the patient? My Mom was just diagnosed with heart failure and intestine cancer. Its all new I took her into the er on 4th of July when she was having severe pain in lower abdomen. She's still in the hospital and had had surgery to try removing the cancer mass off, but 4 days later we got test results and it's still there. Her and I are both nurodivegent as well. But she lives on ssi and doesn't have a lot of money at all, nor do I. But I know we both would benift greatly from having a dog just in general and a service dog would be beyond helpful. But I know we don't have the money to be able to afford a service dog, we would have the money for vet and basic dog care. And we've always have had a dog up till her last dog got hit by a car about 5yrs ago. He was a labor doodle. And was definitely so amazing for my Moms mental health and physical health. Anyways I'm sure she can get her Dr to prescribe a service dog, that's easy.

7:14 why did you call the fire alarm “ugly” and “not cute”? I love fire alarms and to be super truthful with you, the way a fire alarm looks is what makes it so interesting along with the way they sound. That’s why I love fire alarms because of the way they look and the loud noise that they make. But most importantly they save lives! So instead of looking at it as a nuisance and annoying, look at it as a safety device that can mean the difference between life and death.

Remember that if your dog is distracted you will be in a state of medical danger. So what I now do very nicely, but FIRMLY is tell them that I am working and although my disability may appear invisible if she is distracted it puts me in a situation were my health and safety could be jeopardized. I do not think people realize this. This usually works.

In the USA any dog can take the public access test, however to be able to have public access rights and the right to fly in the cabin of a plane as a service dog the handler must require the dog due to a disability and the dog must be trained to preform tasks to assist the handler with the disability. I think it is strange that they call it the PAT and any dog can take it but it if the dog is not a trained service dog then it does not give them PA rights. Also service dogs are not required to take the PA test in order to have PA rights, however a lot of handlers/ trainers will do it anyway incase there is ever legal issue… showing that the dog has passed the test may help in that case.

To add to the issue of unknown dogs approaching your SD. Dont be afraid to protect your dog. If you are going to be soft and say 'shes working sorry'. The other owner isnt gonna care 9/10. Body block the other dog. Use your leg to create space. Grab their collar. Step in front of your dog to protect them! Kick if necessary. Handlers have to start being able and willing to defend the dog that will protect them.

Even pet owners should consider this when on walks at parks…Stray dogs and off leash pets can be a big problem for anyone

I agree that SD handlers are not required to respond to any question, comment, or accusation from the piblic; however, I would argue that the 2 questions should be responded to truthfully. Do be ready to pull out the "I am not required by law to disclose my personal and private health information. I am uncomfortable answering further questions, and will consider further comments harassment." And "Service dogs aren't to be distracted. You are distracting my Service Dog. That is illegal. This is your one and only warning to not harass or assault either of us. ... I am going to call the police." In your pocket to respond to further unwanted questions.

Yes the 2 questions that the ADA allows employees to ask must be answered but after that we are not required to answer or give any further info if we are not comfortable👍🏼. Also if it is the general public asking the 2 questions then handler does not need to answer to the general public if they are not employed at the facility u are in. Although idk why anyone wouldn’t just answer bc it’s awesome when people know the 2 questions 👏🏻 even if they aren’t a store employee

It is not a bad idea to have one bc it makes life easier. But u just need to speak with your doctor and see if they will give u a note stating that you have a disability and require your service dog

I hope this is an appropriate way to ask. But i usually say "hi im (insert my name) and i am interested in getting my own service dog so i was wondering if i could ask you some questions about your dog?" let me know if i am asking in an appropriate way.

I think that’s definitely a good way to ask. We definitely asked some questions when we saw handlers before getting my own dog. That’s how I found the trainer I used. I often times will give someone my UA-cam channel if I don’t have time to talk. And it’s also good to just look and see if it looks like a good time as well. If u can see the dog actively tasking or that the person doesn’t look well then just know that it’s not a good time to ask

Yeah, I feel like a lot of people who live in big cities who have constant access issues do that just bc they don’t have time to explain the laws every time they enter an establishment. Often times in big cities people won’t listen either when you try to educate them. It sucks but u gotta do what u gotta do.
