I used your description in my recent lifepo4 install. The victron DC -DC charger sits there between AGM starter battery and Lithium house bank delivering, when it can, current to House bank. I set protection Voltage of starter battery to DC - DC charger so it cannot drop below a certain voltage to protect starter battery and it happily toggles between delivery and non delivery. The solar panels quickly bring up Lithium charge levels, so up to now the alternator is a top up in cloudy conditions.

Storage looks sparse. It’s an issue on their 30. This appears even worse.

Shore power typically runs a battery charger. On older (read before Li Batteries) boats, the chargers are set up for lead acid. You will need to change these out if you go to Lithium. There is another solution which DOES NOT NEED a DC to DC Converter .... First .... Make sure you have two (2) battery banks by removing the standard Bat 1 -> All -> Bat 2 switch and by either adding two separate switches or replace with a dual circuit switch ... Second .... Remove the old battery charger and replace it with a charge/inverter combo ... Connect the Charge/inverter to shore power and the lithium battery bank .... third - connect the old battery charger to the inverter (and to the lead acid battery) ..... and if you have solar - connect that to the lithium bank ..... You now have the best of all worlds .... Shore power charges lithium bank .... powers inverter which powers lead acid charger - which charges lead acid bank .... Solar recharges lithium bank which as mentioned can also recharge the lead acid bank via the inverter .... and while on shore power -> the charge/inverter can feed the lithium as quickly as possible (mine can go as high as 100 amp charge) I can go into detail (write an article with pictures) as I made these changes to my Catalina 270 just recently ...

Insane to have anything but a tiller on a boat that size. Why would anyone want a wheel and pedestal taking up all that space, and then force the person steering to stand all the way back there, exposed and far from winches and lines. Just crazy!

My first boat was a Catalina 22 which is an perfect first boat. Reasonable investment, trailerable and forgiving.. but teaches you. It was however a bit small for Lake Michigan and I had a Beneteau First 305 for 18 years afterward. Catalina has been consistent in listening to customers and building boats that have traditional lines with good value accessories. Agree with others this boat is a non starter on price....what were they thinking?? Re, the steering...isn't there an Edson nameplate on the pedestal? Maybe a the "Butler" is just an exclusive name for a unit made by Edson for Catalina. Thanks for a great, insightful review.

Constantly fascinated by the crowd not getting what boats cost now adays. If this was a power boat it would run 500,000 though that includes twin 300 HP outboards. Not a Catalina fan but seems like an actual reasonable boat. Looking at prices it still slays me that people think a quality Sabre, Tartan, even Beneteau from the middle 80s 90s is now worthless. It's not a car people it's hopefully a well built house!

If this "baby" 6 series is starting at 1/3 of a million, I shudder to think what the larger models in this new series are going to command 😨

It's an upgraded luxury Catalina 30. It seems very similar.

$300,++++ sounds like a lot for a boat this size. I don't know where the French boats sit in this size range. Catalina sure have stepped up everything. Beautiful Boat. I trust them to make a good boat and stand behind them. Pedestal looks nice. It says Edson on it, below the wheel shaft? If they are going to go with their own system, I'm curious who is going to make it? Hopefully they will sub it out with a big company like Edson.

This is the same boat they have been making for several years, with a few changes like the cheaper rig. An upscale boat over the other base production boats, the price should not be a surprise. And please don't change 300grand into a half million. That would be a base forty footer.

All the features and quality level is relative to the price range. Same as Honda Jazz - many people testing it said it was so nice because it has the space of a Ford Focus inside - but then you realize it also has the price of a Focus and that is all of a sudden less amazing because it is still a small car.

$300K, and that’s just the base price. It’s not hard to imagine upwards of $100K more once you option her out with electronics, etc. OUCH! And, nice as she is, a fully equipped 380 for half the price is a lot more appealing to me.

There is about enough storage area in the galley for a decent lunch and the cockpit table makes the cockpit useless for anything other than eating.

Manufacturers don’t produce things unless they have some idea of the market, so Catalina definitely thinks there will be enough sales to justify this price point. Maybe a combination of individual sales, rentals and shared ownership, wow how many of these things will it take to make it all worth it. Cheers and good luck.

Wow! Nice boat. ... but $330K (base price) is super steep for a 31 footer. I like the look of the new pedestal, BUT looking at the cockpit as a whole and image sailing! That fixed cockpit table trunk is really in the way and I cant imagine actually sailing with 4 people in the cockpit and having to manipulate the lines. I think they should have stuck to the regular Edsel pedestal and fold down table. Another issue are the engine controls. You have to practically reach under the expanded instrument pod. Not sure how that will work well.

It is indeed a really nice vessel but too expensive. Think of the many larger vessels you could buy at that price.

I prefer the 5-Series pedestal with the analog oil pressure, coolant temp, and charging voltage clearly visible at all times right in front of you. It appears the 6-Series only has the "idiot lights" on the Yanmar control panel down by your ankle that alarms only after you have a problem. I wonder if they digitized those parameters and integrated them into the chart plotter via Seanapps. If not, I'd be shopping for a used 5-Series boat. I think I'd prefer the straight spreaders on the older rig. But the new keel should be an improvement. It can be extremely difficult to twist yourself off a sandbar if your wing is aground.

That is one of the dangers of buying a "drop-in" Lion replacement battery. As others have mentioned, it is possible to design a safe system that uses can utilize the full capacity of the alternator. I feel the author should have touched on those points.

Seems like it hits a nice spot. But will be more popular at a used price.
