  • Are you interested in a racer cruiser sailboat like the Pearson 30? This week we dive into a boat review of the Pearson 30, a sub $10,000 sailboat that's a well made boat, comfortable, and very fast in sailboat racing at a club level. We look at the problems with this Pearson sailboat and what to look for when sailboat shopping and what a survey will look for on a Pearson 30.

The blue hull in thumbnail, offered by Onekama Marine, and many of the interior shots featured, are of my friend’s boat I learned to sail on over 30 years ago on Lake Michigan primary and cruised steadily until my illness a few years ago.
Been in many crazy Great Lake squalls with her, and never lost a soul regardless of how hard we tried in our younger pirate years…😎

I bought one of these in the fall for $20 (plus $300 fee) on auction. Marquesa is her name in Monroe, MI on Lake Erie. She's a lot better than a $20 boat. Boat Angel doesn't give you a chance to find out more information about them before you buy, but I figured out where it was kept and talked to the marina owner, who knew it well. Anyways, she floats, the engine fired up (though the water pump on the A4 is weeping and I still haven't gotten to it). It came with the basic sails and no slop in the tiller. There was a comment about a soft deck in the listing, but the marina owner promised it was non structural. As far I see so far find it's next to the scuppers and I'll figure that out on the hard later. But for the money, it's awesome. Right now it's more of a get away, but I hope to get farther before the season ends. Thanks for bringing the article to life and showing so many other P30's for reference.

I've owned hull #840 for some 25 years and have sailed the wheels off of it. It has always taken care of it's crew in some rough stuff. It does everything I need it to.

Talking about the production numbers made me curious.
How many sailboats are build annually these days? Top 10 builders, sizes from 30-45 feet ? Is it even 10k boats annually?

Interesting You mentioned the 303 that would be the next boat up on The mooring fall from mine. Very pretty boat. I sit out there having my son downer and staring at it many evenings

Looks like a clean boat. The engine access does not excite me. Are there other access points?

Exactly why my water pump is still weeping. That and my size and cheapness is another limiting factor to the repair. The starboard cockpit seat (sail locker) has access to the side with the alternator, distributor and water pump. Mine had battery boxes that are kind of high limiting the access, it's more for a fit 5'5" person. The port side birth has access to that side of the engine. I feel like a lot of sailboats are like this. My dream is to replace the A4 with and electric motor. I have seen one with an outboard on the back that seems to get by well. It really opened up some space for them.

That’s tricky. What about the bigger Beneteaus? Like 42+ feet?

I used to crew on a 30' Pearson on Lake Ontario in the late 1980s. It was fast and fun to sail and we won a lot of races on that boat.

Have you reviewed any Southern Cross boats? The SC35 or 31? Many have circumnavigated.

The Pearson 28 of the same vintage will outsail the 30 on any day.

I have a soft spot for the Pearson 30. It's a very cool little boat that was going to downsize a little bit. That would be the direction I would be heading in has everything you need

I owned the last one built. Hull 1193. She had 303 cream color gel coat with tan decks and diesel motor. My all time favorite boat. Wish I still had it!

Tim, I love your videos both here and on Lady K Sailing. I've raced against P-30s many times and your comments are spot in. The one thing that bugs me a little is that many of the boats you show during the video weren't P-30s. I saw P-34s (I had one for 22 years), a P-36, and a Cal. This is also true on other videos you've created. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine. But, keep up the great work to get more people sailing. Keep the bottom side down, but not too far down!

Seems like a nice one of these boats would be great for both learning race captaining & doing some weekends too. At a good price. Thanks Tim.

I owned a Pearson 30 and agree with this review. It was a great boat for us. One minor issue though. A fair number of the exterior pictures are not Pearson 30s. This includes the boats at 1:01, 1:16, 1:21 and 10:06 in the video. I don't know what they are, but not Pearson 30s. The deck on the boat at 1:50 sure looks like a Pearson 30, but the main cabin windows are wrong. Likely an owner modification.

Update to my previous comment. Most of the "not Pearson 30" boats I called out are Pearson 303s. So still Pearsons, but not related to the model featured here. A very different boat.

What is headroom on the P30?

    • @sendtorandy

I have a 1980 Pearson and the headroom is right around 6 feet. I'm 6'1" and my head just rubs the ceiling.
