There's no such olace as '"Newport point", or there never used to be. Looks like maybe 15th street, or maybe 54th, but it looks more like a west swell, so probably 15t street?

Tear down the Beach Hut at Lunada Bay? Why?!? Because the locals probably don't like the foot traffic? Ridiculous! I grew up right there in that area; California Beaches ARE public beaches; hence, they are usable to all who can get there (as long as you are not trespassing on homeowner property). Listen, EVERYONE that buys property in beach areas should know in advance the rules of beach access for public use. Many people that buy in these areas come with the attitude that they will close-off beach access - their excuse is to protect the peaceful enjoyment of their property & neighborhood. While I understand what they are claiming, they CANNOT revoke public access to public beaches! I used to live out on the cliffs of Malaga Cove overlooking the beaches of Torrance & Manhattan. Directly accross the street from my home was a small green park area, then the edge of the cliff(s). There was a path there to gain access to the beginning (Southern end) of Torrance Beach. This was a very popular public beach access - parking for this access was my street (summertime was nutsers). BUT, I knew this fact when I bought the home - problem solved). I grew up living on CA Beaches at the edge of the surf line. CA Beaches rank right at the top of the list of 'most beautiful beaches worldwide'; people vacation & live in these areas for that reason alone. We CA Beach Natives understand the Spring/Summer/Fall influx of people wanting to enjoy the beaches (we grew up with this sharing attitude). The problem is the migration of new homeowners (from the interior or more eastern parts of the U.S.); they come with nontolerant attitudes; hence, the war on beach access in their communities. Do Real Estate Agents forewarn potential buyers? I would say the majority of them don't. The CA Coastal Commission has laws on beach access (online). Potential buyers/homeowners need to educate themselves on CA Beach Access, period. In the meantime, whenever I do go to SoCal (Southern California), I always plan on a couple of days at the beach. Yes, I will be respectfully be using beach access. As for the land slide areas of SoCal, my sympathies to the homeowners; they have paid massive bucks to live out on the Palos Verdes Peninsula - I moved away years ago. I pray the land (historically) stops moving, but my prayers will most likely go unanswered. It will be a geological battle that the residents/homeowners will NOT win, unfortunately. In the meantime, SURF'S UP! ⛱️ 🌊 😎

I've surfed Newport and Huntington when it was pretty big but not THIS BIG. Major props to the guys handling those bombs.

Surfed Salt Creek in the 70’s. Paddled around the point to surf in the cove a couple of times . Never saw it that big there . Think back then when it was big we went to trestles . Had I known back then it was like that I would have been all over that left. Surfed so many places from IB to SF wish I had on my list .

In the seventies it was my go to spot. Snaked being able to drive in the trailer park down to parking lot. The point back then was really good. Summer swells surfing with friends I went to Dana hills high school. What a life. It’s a shame how they destroyed it with development. 2003 headed for central Oregon coast and have never looked back. SoCal is too expensive and way too crowded.

The cove is only good when the swell is incredibly big. The peak at "Pipes" state park starts to break at 10 feet and breaks perfectly both ways at twenty feet. I like it better than Swamis when it is big..

The ranch is divided into the Hollister and Bixby ranch. The south ranch breaks on all south swells and is not blocked by the Channel Islands. In the winter on a north swell, the north ranch is absolutely huge. Government point can hold any size swell. Little Drakes is a tube ride when it is big. Perko's and Tarantulas get absolutely enormous in the winter. They are in north ranch. The boys used to ride it and tell stories while watching football and guzzling beer. The biggest sharks on the west coast all live at Point Conception.

All the surfers with 18-foot Boston whalers would jet into the ranch and surf razors and rights and left. The biggest and most dangerous spot at the ranch is Perko's. Try to film that break on a big swell?

So much sand!!

I used to surf the ranch back in the late 70's and 80's. Twice we pulled up to Drakes in the morning with a sloppy south wind and 2' garbage. For the next 45 minutes, the wind shifted offshore and the swell picked up to a solid 6' and it was nonstop pumping for the next 6 hours with only 7 guys out. And Percos is a fun wave as well with that outer bowl and inside little zipper.

Oh my, what a back in the day experience this brought to my 74 YO pea brain. I was lucky to have been employed by a com contractor doing com installs for the USAF MOL project on the ranch. All through college and after graduation, I had drive in access to the Ranch for many years. What a special place.

And Blackies is strictly a left . Search for Hurricane Marie circa 2013 . That will show you true Blackies . And btw , Blackies is just just a dive bar next to Pier on north side parking lot

Umm this is not Blackies . It’s Newport Pier north side Blackies is sandbar at south side of pier . Some call it Newport Point . And it’s flat in winter as this video was made .

Strands is now a soft, mushy roller. Perfect for adult-learners. I'll bet Salt Creek point was on fire that day.

I used to hang-out at that beach from around 1985 to 2010. Before those houses were built, there was a quaint little trailer park. And there was tons of sand on the beach. Nothing good ever lasts forever.

California is the surf destination for the world. When it is completely flat in the winter, La Jolla is three feet slop, I sit in a bar in SF and watch 6-10 foot peaks roll in at Ocean Beach. If a surfer has money and likes to travel, move to CA

This is summer surf in point conception. In the winter Tarantula gets full impact from NW swell and is a huge peak with easy paddle-out and twenty- foot great white sharks in the kelp. In the winter when there is no swell, it is 10-15 feet with ice cream cold water and a sickening feeling from all the sharks.

Govi's was my favorite place to surf and fish for halibut and even hunted wild boar there in around 2005. Albert was the guide and i harvested a 120 lb sow ! Delicioso ! Keep it pristine

I remember 50 plus years ago in winter body surfing with my dive buddy Dave these 20 foot faces here! Huge drops! Hard landing in one of them where I received a bloody chin. 😊

Wow! I grew up bodysurfing, boogie boarding, and then surfing there. Such a bummer all the sand is gone. That wave used to be so good and hollow at first peak, pink house, and texas flag. Ah, the good ole days. Weird to see it with no beach.

Epic video! I was born in South Laguna in 1984! And grew up here! My dad even grew up in south laguna! I loved going on the pier. It acted like a jetty and kept so much sand at this beach! Great video! 🤙🏼
