"Skylights" for Saxophone Quintet (Score Video)
"Skylights" is a work in three movements inspired by the light emitted from the sky as the day turns into night. The first movement depicts the time of day known as “golden hour,” the period right before sunset during which the light outside becomes warm and yellow-orange. The movement is a mixture of light and nimble phrases and calm serene textures to depict the beautiful way the sun emits its light in the last moments before sunset.
The second movement, “Twilight,” depicts the time after the sun has disappeared below the horizon, and the sky becomes a hazy, dark blue. The movement begins with a lonely melody played by the soprano saxophone soloist, as the waning light from the sky becomes more and more blue. The rest of the ensemble then enters with a cascade of warm chords ebbing and flowing from one to the next. “Twilight” is built around descending melodic and harmonic lines, to convey the sun’s light slowly fading away as the evening becomes night.
The final movement, “Starlight," is inspired by stargazing. The music rapidly shifts between different textures, harmonies, and time signatures, to depict what it’s like to have your eyes darting around the night sky as you discover more and more stars, planets, and satellites coming into view.
"Skylights" was commissioned by saxophonist Anthony Cincotta and premiered alongside the Invicta Saxophone Quartet.

Good stuff Jack. Almost thought Dr. Engebretson played on this.
Lovely colour.
Incredible. So at one with the original piece. Yet so sonically different 🙂
Its incredibly impressive that you manage to switch key signatures to this degree without people hearing it. I love the piece, one of my favorite quartet works. Great job!
So glad you enjoy it, thanks for listening!
This has been playing in my head most of the day-the first time I've ever welcomed an earworm!
So damned good I just have to watch it again, the marimba is so perfect for this piece and it beautifully played-another UA-cam treasure!
It's very nice but I don't think you can play it with 2 people. In the original piece, the crazy thing is these rythm changes, that feel so organic, hence the "Mad Rush" title. It's constantly evolving. Rhythm changes are easy when it's just a guy and his piano, but way too difficult to render in a spontaneous way when it's two players. Which is why this rendition feels too stiff.
An absolute delight to listen to
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man I'm gonna miss these. They had a good service life tho.
I’m gonna miss these too
Why can UA-cam be more like this??? You’re gifts have blessed me, thank you so much :)
I feel pretty sure that you will love this suggestion-it is truly exquisite, in every respect, it is: Glass, Etude no.6 played by the Davin-Levin Duo. I hope you give it a try-it's quite a short piece!
@@Blackbird58 hi and thank you for the lovely suggestion! it truly is beautiful. thank you!!!!!!:)
Rest in peace they are now being retired
The 2000 series will be missed, glad I got to ride one recently
So this was sort of Phillip Glass approaching the Steve Reich? I also, in some of Phillip Glasse's piano etudes, I here Arvo Part. // I enjoyed the way they brought out the dynamics, the "breating" of the volume. There is a wonderful gentleness about it. Guys, if you are out there, please see my work with color-association and musical notes. I believe I have pinpointed certain emotions to distinct keys. With proofs! Great work, none-the-less. Your, _Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Very well done. Loved it.. The Marimba is so beautiful.
So awesome!
Thanks! :D
Thank you, gentlemen.
Just wow 😮

🎉
Awesome job! Keep up the excellent work 🤘🤘
Fanfare at 4:08 still gives me chills every time
nice dude
Mesmerizing
I’m really loving the Reich-ian qualities coming out in this, if only from choice of instrument alone! Bravi!
Thanks! I’ve always wondered why Reich was frequently drawn to the marimba but Philip Glass has rarely written for it
I love the ethereal nature of your music.
Thank you!
This is KILLER
Thanks! :D
wow great job
Thanks!
A beautiful piece. It reminds me (a little bit) of Isao Tomita's version of the Sunken Cathedral.
Thanks!
это безумие.
Also I think you would appreciate Ruth Underwood's work with Frank zappa. Check her out!
Makes me happy to see you young whippersnappers create such a perfect rendition of this piece. I will come back to this over and over. Well done
Thank you!
Such an Underrated video! Congrats on finding out the recurring themes in the elder scrolls games.
Thank you for performing this and sharing it. I didn't know I needed this! Great work. 👍
We’re glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks!
this is so gorgeous. tempted to grab my sax and try it!
Awesome! I’m glad you like it :)
I like that each of the parts have interesting things to do.
It's good to see you back.
My mind instantly go among the clouds...
This make me so happy and restores my faith in humanity, for a while... Mad Skills!
Thanks!
Congratulations Jack and Jake -- awesome.
Thank you!
❤
"Mad Rush" was composed for the mallets and Philip Glass didn't know it. Congrats, guys!
