Can we trust Dr. Andrew Huberman?
Andrew Huberman has become a leading science communicator. On the one hand, he is an accomplished academic, a Stanford professor, and one of the most popular podcasters. On the other hand, he seems to have financial conflicts of interest. In this video I share my perspective, some tips on how to judge how trustworthy a scientific communicator is. Can we trust him? What do you think? What is your experience?

Oh boy! So now all the unhappy Docs are going to take advantage of Goobie’s plight! “Hey good idea Goob-you showed us all how to make extra bucks on the side in case this doctor thing doesn’t work out-or even if it does-let’s make more money off these boobs who’ll follow me to get UA-cam to make us millionaires billionaires!” Shameful!! How dare you! This guys performance right here whoever you are, is such a joke! He can barely keep from laughing as he thinks about his fakeness! How shameful an opportunist you are!
I have a similar journey. Including a MPH. Sadly providers of direct patient care in US have become replaceable commodities. We haven’t fully realized this yet. I would have NEVER said this before, but I now believe collective bargaining is the only way we can save our profession. It will save our patients too.
Appreciate you sharing some of your personal story here-a surprising amount of ground was covered in just a short 7 minute video. Wishing both you and Dr. Goobie the best on your continued journeys ahead 🙌
Thanks for this review. Good points.
You’re welcome. Thanks for the feedback
Check out Dr Suneel Dhand. He is also desirous of change in the medical community. He agrees completely with the serious issue of compromise due to $$$ from outside interests.
Thank you! I’ve seen a few of his videos. Good stuff, much of it, though some (“doctors are useless”, etc) seems to me to be overly simplistic, sensationalist, and click-baity. What do you think? I’ll records video about it.
Im looking forward to more videos !
You have about 0% chance of changing the healthcare system. It's locked up in a top down, centralized, data driven, algorithmic, cookbook care. The art is gone
Former health care worker. I quit well before retirement because the abuse from management and patients was just too much. I loved helping people but the entitlement and outright bullying and abuse wasn’t worth it. I’m slowing regaining my health and confidence again.
Same, after 26+ years with the same org. I left the cult, if you will. It took a long time to get out. And, like anything cultish, there is a high exit cost.❤
God bless you doctor for this extremely valuable and necessary work!
Thank You for another doctor comitted to the Truth....only the truth can gradually lead to positive change !
Hallo Dr. Swanson! In the beginning of your video i though, that it will be some kind critic to Dr. Gooby... But it is not. Which is good. In your short explanation, i can see, that you are in the stress just now. Your mouth is dry, you talking a bit fast au usual.. In the end of your video you said, that your promise that you will answer the questions daily.. But you know what i am thinking.. Try to find your own balance first. 🙏 I think, your own resource is close to give any kind of information to somebody else. You have to come down. To find your harmony. For me was very helpful meditate with program of Dr. Deepak Chopra. After some days i started to feel very different than ever before.. I understood a lot of question what i was thinking quite a wile.. It start some kind of automatically.. Very special.. I did it just15 min / day.. Anyway.. I wish you could find your middle and your mission. With love ❤ N.
Just because someone’s mouth is dry does not mean they’re unable to help others. I’m glad that you found your peace with Chopra and i hope you can appreciate that “knowing the truth” is much easier than seeking it… this was a very brief video and it’s unlikely that you’d know what this person could or couldn’t offer to others …
@AB... Good grief. Stop projecting and diagnosing.

@@DrProfX anything about truth or not truth. You can be agree or disagree with me. But it is just my opinion. Not more and not less. 🤷🏼♀️
Having worked in healthcare… primarily surgery for 40 years I agree that the healthcare system is ill. It’s bad for the workers and patients. Government should never be involved in the care of patients. They and insurance companies increase costs, they delay care. They deny care. They make slaves of physicians and medical facilities. They make decisions based on money instead of actual care.
Like Dr Goobie said that some of his patients complaints about their pain but then they had to cancel the surgery because the pain had gone away! Why? Bc the pain could be due to stress in their personal life, job, etc. and Doctor should ask patients about that. I used to have a primary physician who would ask me questions about my life, what I eat etc. but then he retired . He practiced solo. Young doctors don’t have such luxury. They got bought out- no choice, and they work like maniacs. I love you doctors!
I had 2 herniated discs in thoracic area. Before surgery the pain disipated. Sometimes this happens. It still aches now and then though.
They’re assistants. People need to stop using them like they’re attendings.
Dr. Goobie’s main dilemma is patients who are noncompliant. Surgery is the final step to be offered. Surgery is not a magic pill that cures all your problems. Your problems before surgery will still be there after surgery. The purpose of surgery is to PREVENT things from getting worse. BUT Americans like magic pills to take away their pains & problems. Look at how many are on mind & mood-altering drugs.
One reason for these issues is doctors allow themselves to be beholden to insurance companies. But hey, $$ talks. And they get you by burdening students with years of house mortgage-sized student loans. And most doctors are afraid to think outside the box because of medicolegal risks. So more of following the herd. Yay🎉
This is wonderful. Thank you so much. I'm a practicing psychologist here in the states and so many elements of Goobie's story have been powerfully resonant. So grateful for the bravery of physicians like you both, and really look forward to hearing more from you. Change is not just coming, it's here. I have hope!
i had to leave my last job, the private equity "partner" agilon would serve you with their data mining forms every morning for the days pts. we were admonished to upcode, upcode, upcode and if we didnt we were called on thr carpet. now no one actually cared if you listened to the actual patient or did thr right thing for them...they only wanted the higher billing codes in the note. shameful
Yes, yes ! I’m an elderly person with no medical training except personal experience, and think these videos will raise our ability to think and act in useful ways. Thank you, Dr. Chad.
I was a nurse for 30 years. If I want to talk to a nurse I will talk to myself. I went 5 YEARS without seeing my cardiologist because it "wasn't necessary." All I saw were pa's and nurses. I finally had enough and asked them if they even had doctors working there. I have an extensive history of heart problems, starting in my late 30's. A PA gave me incorrect meds, and then they realized maybe I should see a doctor. EIGHT WEEKS later I got a cath and had a 95% proximal occlusion of my dominant RCA. I should be dead. I was working when PAs and NPs started and that was the very slippery slope that has landed where we are now. NO health care. Doctors have gotten lazy and don't want to do their jobs any more and so let's let a nurse who's had a couple classes act like a doctor. I have seen patients call them doctor and they never correct them. And so here we are. The crappiest care ever in the US.
@@DeborahHenrie Thanks for sharing your experience. It highlights the need for change, and to get this right.

If the definition of 'patient centered care' means being ignored, then I'm receiving awesome nothing. Its at the university hospital in the state. My butt checks are more patient centered. Im in Social Security Disability, with multiple medical challenges. Included tapering off long term high dose benzos. Thats all they see. Not a human being, just "shes not taking her 'medication'. I've been sedated for long enough - 40 years too much. I'm still breathing. Hello, I'm glad i can put a sentence together. And usually comprehend. Any legal help???
So sorry. I’m not gonna pretend to know what you’re going through. Certainly we as the society and as a medical system can do much better.
i still remember in 2021 when i was already waiting 8-10 hours into the night waiting for them to green light the surgery to cut into my stomach to take something out and all the doctor was concerned about was getting me my covid-19 vaccinations before the surgery, like wtf?
Covid was a tough time, that’s for sure, on lots of levels. We could’ve done much better.

Western Medicine is a joke. @Super.... they can't! (Able but prohibited by the Flexner Report, which ties their hands. Or else.)
One word. CORRUPTION. Even Docs are lied to. The machine only cares about money. They use the ruse of healthcare to get customers. They work to put out junk food and run commercials on how you should be proud to be obese. These are sick people. Greedy people. Many Docs have good intentions. We need some but most are simply pill pushers. I write as well doc. You cannot and should not force the creative process. It must come to you. Japanese doctors make @$100K a year for a specialist. In the USA? Too Much! Why?
@@GlobalDrifter1000 thank you. I’ll think about this and research it more, and create a video. Here are my initial thoughts: first, I wonder how much can be explained by a nationwide difference in incomes from all sources. Two. Financial gain has always been a major driver in American medicine, the profession has been aggressive in organizational and political moves to decrease competition and ensure a high income. Three. Physicians would argue that they sacrifice a tremendous amount of their lives in training to, and that the high income is much deserved. As a practicing emergency physician, I can certainly relate to that. Four. There are no active healthy market forces That would reward organizations that provide better services at lower cost. What are your thoughts? More to come…
@@drchadswansonin regards to point 3 (CRNA here), the majority of the time and money spent in getting to where you want to be is unnecessary. Think of all the unnecessary college classes. I trained with “certificate CRNAs” (nurses trained by hospitals) who are very knowledgeable, and now a PhD is required to do the same job. Think about that.
@@ts3063 thank you. You’re absolutely right, I agree 100%. The educational requirements to be a physician are largely 100 years old, with many requirements that make no sense. And so there’s unnecessary time not earning income that many physicians would argue justifies a higher income.

If I understand right you said there are places today where there has been a transformation to incentivize wellness over volume. If so I’m interested in learning more about these efforts - how they got started, how they’re going.
Thanks. It is getting to the point where many, maybe even most healthcare providers like me are being financially incentivized to provide value at some level. There are also a number of healthcare systems like Kaiser, Intermountain, and Geisinger, that have been implementing some version of value based care to some degree for years, decades. And then there are pockets of really innovative, start up like healthcare providers that are pushing this forward. I’ll record one video on this soon, and many more in the coming months.
I've watched Dr. Goobie's videos and they're very relevant. Integrative medicine considers and applies the importance of looking at the whole patient and not just his/her medical diagnosis with good outcomes. I've had some wonderful experiences working with doctors who use this model. We are more than our bodies!! One technical comment that I thought might be helpful to you. Thanks for sharing your experience with integrative medicine. Also, I really appreciate the feedback on my filming technique. I’m new at this, and learning as I go!
Your sharing is really valuable and adds to this conversation. There are so many variables with the health care system, not the least of which is Big Pharma and insurance companies. We owned three community pharmacies for 50 years and were forced out by both of these greedy behemoths. We just couldn't compete. They're calling the shots and ruining health care in so many ways!!

Hello, thanks for ypur work on this. The $400 B sounds about right for transformational change. I strongly believe that change needs to begin with our educational system starting at the secondary school level. I work in community mental health and see many of the same issues at all the different levels. I will share your site.
@@bethbakker7647 thank you for stopping by, and for your feedback. I agree that changes need to start at the secondary level. This really needs to be a historical societal change. Hello, I had the same feelings watching Sr. Doobies videos and it's nice to have such authenticity from you two on UA-cam. Haven't seen that side from other docs on the platform prior. I am a family medicine resident with UA-cam experience, thinking about starting my own series taking about my experiences, partially as my own therapy. The educational system the last few years has been particularly tough on me, and I've wanted to take a long break since starting. Interested in underserved and travel medicine, but think i will need a break and to pay off my debts prior to going moreso into the things i want to do since they do not pay as well as far as i know
Thanks for stopping by, and great to hear from you. Our educational system that we inherited is out of date. There’s a large number of diverse people that have unique experiences. I wish you well on your journey, and hope that our paths continue to cross.
Question: emergency department thoracotomy? Are you for or against it? Can you go into detail regarding the procedure and your thoughts.
Thanks for stopping by. I’m certainly in favor of an ED thoracotomy in the rare instance that it indicated. My focus here on UA-cam isn’t on detailed clinical issues, but larger systems and societal issues. There are plenty of videos about economies though. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I will definitely be posting about insurance. However, I think it’s important for us all to realize and remember that the clinical medicine services covered by insurance only contribute to about 5 to 20% of health status that we can control.

Dear Chad. More and more doctors comes forward and tells almost the same story. To me as a human being and patient, I have met a system, that was more than loyal to big pharma and their collagues, than to the health of their patients. Most doctors seems to be trapped in the same system as their patients, but obviously havent succeeded changing much. My experience is that Its impressive what a patient with any systemic disorder, can achieve by introducing intermittent fasting, better mouth hygiene, and gradually learn how to avoid industrial foods, and those type of medications, that were only made for profit. Its obvious to me, that smoking, alkohol, overweight and ignorance of own influence, are the main killers of quality of life and life itself. -anyway its just a thought. Per in Denmark. 😎🇩🇰
Thanks, Per. I really appreciate your comments. We are all, in ways, victims of the very system that we support and rely on.
