Victron Cyrix battery combiner 120A | Very Easy DIY Installation
I tow a Jurgens Exporer behind my Toyota Fortuner and needed a way to charge the caravan battery from the vehicle's alternator while I drive. This Victron Cyrix-ct smart battery combiner was super easy to install myself without any special tools.

2007 Toyota Fortuner Towing a Very Heavy 2007 Jurgens Explorer

For some, a 17 year old car is too old to drive. Never mind towing a 17 year old, very heavy offroad caravan over 5 000km. That's exactly what we did and in this short video I chat about how the 2007 Toyota Fortuner D-4D 4x4 manual handled the task of towing our 1 500 kg Jurgen Explorer offroad caravan.

4wd overlanding vehicles are not known for good gas mileage. But buying a second-hand rig can still be more economical than a more frugal new vehicle. Toyota Prado 90/95 - FIVE Things to Consider Before Buying
Переглядів 1,2 тис.3 місяці тому
Don't get me wrong, the Toyota Prado 95-series is an amazing vehicle and I'd buy another without thinking twice. But as with all cars, there are always a few things to know before you buy. Luckily, with the Prado this list is very short and not very serious (except for the one issue!).

A proper car from the golden age. Simple, no bullshit electronics, no touchscreens. Cheers!
I would prefer the bike to have a conventional speedo and rev counter. Many of the features found on the dashboard unit are unnecessary and make it more complicated. It's not always easy to adjust and the owners handbook doesn't explain things adequately. I wish it was as straightforward as my old 2015 reg 1000.
Nice one! You got me thinking if i should get one for my setup.. so as you know my aux battery is connected via a fuse and plugs in to the dc dc charge controller which in turns runs the fridge and is permanently connected to the solar... so my question was how do i keep my starter battery charged if my bakkie is standing for long periods... solution was simple.. connect one port on the aux box with a extention to the plug at the back that runs to the starter batt.. and bobs your uncle... now i just wonder if it will make sense to add a fuse to the extention when running the setup as with "reverse charging" the fuse is at the end of the line... thanks for the inspiration
Thanks tjoppies. You'll have to send me a picture LOL I would make sure there's a fuse on either side of the long cable (i.e. as close to the + of each battery).
I have had motor cycles and scooters all my life I am 73 and never came off at all, still riding. I think it is in your mindset, I wear the same gear all the time for bikes or scooters. I even raced bikes ( never got better than 5th, never mind ) but never came off. Just my opinion
Thanks This is good to hear, I drive a 2007 D4D Hill and am considering buying either a Xplorer or Conqueror.
The Hilux's towing capacity is 2500kg vs the Fortuner's 1500kg :) If you're buying second hand, do some research on the suspension. I wasn't aware of the rubber torsion axle on the Xplorer. I think I would have gone for the Conqueror's coils and shocks because they'll easier to replace in the middle of nowhere. Also, the older ones like mine is wood, not alu. Great caravan though!
We have a 2013 D4D towing a gypsy Rhapsody with average fuel consumption 7.7 l per 100km very easy tow
Wow, that’s economical! I got 7.8km/l which translates to 12.8 l per 100km
Thanks for the video :) We have a 2010 D-4D and it tows like a dream! never have to down shift or struggle to overtake / go uphill.
Yeah, I was surprised that I can stay in fourth up most hills. Thanks for watching :)
Are you selling it?
Nope 😊
The gear change has been tractor tractor like for years its never bothered me
I went with the DR-Z mostly because of the weight difference and slightly better suspension.

Oil return to head cleaner
Hi my bike 2011 is oil liking... May you share what's the origin of that ... Because I added those oil liking liquid stoppers but worked for a while.. but is back what should I check tkns. A million
Very wise decision on the Chinese bikes. Anything else would've been a disaster that you can only fix in Lala land.
Well said!
I owned a 1988 (US). It was a litle slow on the highway but, it was great in 4WD areas. Wishi I still had it. Too bad we don't have the Jimny here in the US
It’s very slow, but it keeps going
I have two duel sport bikes one in the USA and one in Mexico the one in Mexico I have a italika DM 250 you know for the money it runs great the only problem for me is that at a stop I'm on my tip ties the one or I lean in one foot it goes anywhere the one in the USA is a Yamaha XT 250 this one is a little shorter cost more but I like them both the Chinese dose what any other bike take care of it and it will last be safe have fun
Great job my friend.
Is this ZA?
Number 8: the horizontal cylinders are excellent for warming/drying your gloves! I ride a 2000 R850GS (141k km) and in Norways often cold weather that is an excellent feature -- when I stop for a rest I leave the gloves on the cylinder and voila! I have warm gloves to put on when I continue my ride! (Just be careful not to put the tip of the gloves so that they touch the exhaust pipe; that will make extra holes in the gloves... ;-) ) Thank you for the video!
What is the white stuff he put on to keep from flash rusting?
Hello and thank you for this video. My main dislike concerns the twichy throttle response at near idle rpm. I foudn it very difficult on mine to be smooth from idle when opening (as gently as possible) the trhrottle after passing a round about or coming out of a curb. I tried mutliple fixes (the issue is wellknown) like a false temperature sensor which wil give the ECU the ''impression'' taht air emp is lower than it is in order to enrich a little gaz to air ration but it was still an issue for me.
Thank, this was really helpful. I need this to my Alaska trip.
Why you change the currency if you from SA 😂
Because most of my audience is from the USA :)
Great car except RUST!
I got lucky that this one has minimal rust
@GreaseAndGravel we use lot of suzuki cars in my country (Hungary) and almost all has serious problems with corrosion. Mine too. So we making repair and special undercoating which is a must have here.
@ the ones that live at the coast here in ZA have the same problem. Luckily where I live it is dry. Awesome cars though
Honda ..reliability .
I have had the Samurai on my bucket list for awhile. Is it just me or do the interiors always look “dusty”?
You won't regret it! Haha, ALL my cars have dusty interiors here. Nothing stays clean.
I can go for about 1 minute.. after about 20 hours of static balance practice ALONE! Lol.. when you start out also try turning your bars one way “I did to the left” while holding your front brake. That’s a confidence builder. I was better sitting down at first too.. scooting in closer to the tank also helped me. You’re a pretty fast learner. For people struggling try what I said and it can take awhile but you will 100% get it down.
Thanks for the advice! I did the same, turn to one side and front brake applied. I managed to do the same on my R1200GSA: ua-cam.com/video/QtXCei6E4fs/v-deo.html But it is not a linear progression.
@ lol for sure! Definitely not linear. What takes the most time for me was going from decent at it to doing it on flat concrete and no breaking or turning the wheel which I’m still practicing.. just a small gust of wind and plop.
I have a BMW650gs and a Honda XR650l. Between the two, for travelling the bmw is better with the cush drive rear wheel. I prefer the XR due to its ground clearance and lighter weight, maneuverability in tight spots offroad and smiles per mile.
Wow sir how much for the car or what is value/price? Thanks
This one is not for sale.. but I see them advertised for between ZAR150 000 and ZAR200 000 in this condition in ZA.
Broer! Jy is so afrikaans as wat ons kom! Baie dankie vir die video, ek koop moontlik my samurai binne die volgende paar weke!
Uitgevang! 🤣 Dankie vir die boodskap. Jy sal nie spyt wees nie.
Sorry, but can't listen to your horrible voice
Hot tip for all you 08-09 Gen 2 owners trying to sell your bikes, mention oil-consumption in your ad. We all know about the problem. So either say you corrected it or quantify the problem in an honest sounding way. Ignoring it will only encourage potential buyers to think the worst---that the bike has a problem and that you are not honest, with the latter being the bigger problem.
Good advice!
my prado had the same issue with the heater control. if you get some help you can pop the hood and get them to look at the back of the engine in the middle of the car above the fire wall in the engine bay while you twist your heater knob they should see the cable move and see where it gets stuck than its as simple as freeing it up.
Thanks, I will give it a go!
2010 first dohc model, sold a few years ago 178.000km. Friend is riding it now and there are 210.000k on it (stll original clutch) only problem leaking rear ESA shock... no real other issues. Even the fuel gauge is original. Replaced the seat immediatly after buyng
Excellent video. No one should shy away because of the lower ball joints - just need to regularly check. We didn't get the diesel for a few years later here in Australia. Happy travels!
Thanks for the comment! I agree, I check my LBJ's regularly and I will only use OEM parts. These Prado's are awesome value for money. Cheers from ZA
Yep..just need to be checked for play every oil change. I use cheaper sankie non-greasable ones and change every 40k-50k km. Mostly use my vehicle on bad roads. Off course oem would be better but need the same regular check. It doesn't just fail without the tell tale signs/sounds.
Cool...ride
Thanks!
2:28 Grey hornbill ? 🥰
Wow, you're paying attention! It's actually a red-billed hornbill that nests in our Marula each year 😊
My opinion is that you ride a dual sport bike on shorter rides, usually with friends, carrying very little and riding faster, more "sporting" because help is near at hand should you break down or get injured. You ride an ADV bike slower because you are carrying more gear and/or help is not nearby so you don't risk crashing or breakdowns. And any size bike can be used in either way but dual sporting is much more fun on a lighter bike, and traveling is more comfortable on a heavier bike. Generally speaking of course.
I just bought an XR650L! I rented one in Ecuador for my first solo 3 week ride and just loved it. Mods are cheap and easy in the US (front sprocket, bigger gas tank and rear subframe support is all I’m doing.) No it’s not a perfect bike. And not right for everyone. Who knows, I may find out it’s not the bike for me. But it’s my second bike, and I hope to modify it into a RTW machine. I am NOT however looking forward to approaching head on a huge semi truck at 60MPH with a 30 MPH side wind that is the norm in Kansas. That’s what my Gold Wing is for. 😂 It’ll be fun to have a bike I can work on and have fun with. (Oops! Really old post! 😂)
What an amazing adventure! I agree with your choice of bikes for the trip, something new, inexpensive, and very common. It makes it easier to get parts and repairs and if you have to abandon the bike or it gets stolen it is not a big loss. I wouldn't choose to travel as quickly as you needed to but we all have different time schedules and it is much better to go and have to travel faster than to not go at all. Thanks for making this very interesting video.
I'm sitting in one right now runs like a new car we call it the father of the Fortuner, Tell you something interesting we using it at construction site, but when I brought it came with one proper shaft missing, don't understand why but it doesn't affect how it drives
And the ac feels like you're in a modern car the heater feels like you're burning, the engine starts better than most of its peers
That is awesome to hear! I agree, this one from 2005 also still feels brand new. About that missing drive shaft... the Condor is constant four wheel drive, so if a drive shaft is missing in the front and you put the transfer lever in HL (high range, center diff locked), it should drive like normal with the rear wheels only. Did you notice in which position the short lever was? Awesome cars!
Exactly the same with this one. The ac is almost too cold and the engine start if you touch the key... every time!
My 3.4 averages 18L/100km
Thanks for sharing. That is quite thirsty!
Mine averages 18.9 l / 100 km but i drive it on LPG.
You haven't had wheel bearings yet done yet? Wait till you see how much those cost....
I'm too afraid to ask! Can you get aftermarket parts, or are the dealers the only source (like most other parts)?
Diesel with manual is perfect combo
I agree. My brother's manual diesel feels like a totally different vehicle from my automatic petrol. Even though it has less power and torque, it feels faster and more powerful.
No rear diff lock? That’s like driving a first gen Mercedes ML from 90s
The LSD works quite well. I've tested it a few times. You just step on the gas and it stops the wheel in the air from spinning.
@ yeah for real I have 1998 the first ever generation ML body frame. That thing is underrated now when it comes to lifted 4x4 especially the Japanese they’re superior over the ML however I don’t think ML has a competitor out of all SUV suburbans especially in the 90s because not many SUVs were developed then
Gees you guys have a ton of cables all over the place.
I know! The CB's were rented and I don't use the GPS that often. Your comment might just be the reason I finally shorten the cables and tidy up the setup. Thank you ;)
My KDJ95 with 1KD-FTV engine on mixed driving, but mostly long haul driving gets between 0.85 to 1.0 liter pr 10km. That is without roof rack, R151f transmission and about 31" all terrain tires. Thats around 11.76 to 10 km/liter for you ZA folks. Was a couple of weeks in Namibia 2 years back renting a 2KD-FTV hilux with rooftop tent and manual transmission and it really wasn't bad on fuel consumption. Seems that common rail really does wonders.
Thanks for sharing! I wish we got the Prado's with the 1KD-FTV. Here, even the 120's had the old KZ-TE and only the 150 got the D-4D.
I get about the same out of my 1kD too, it’s a good engine for sure 👍
@@GreaseAndGravel The 1KZ and 1Kd share the same engine block, so there are possibilities for an easy upgrade. Same goes for the 2KD, not exact same block, but same engine mounts and transmission/bell-housing bolt holes, so it will bolt right up to your current transmission. Not to hard to convert to mechanical injection either or just buy a Baldur DID1 stand alone ECU. Then you can have plenty of power, reliability and better fuel consumption.
