I’m going to disagree with everything y’all said about Sheridan. First off, you keep saying, “just give them a planet”, like it’s that easy. I see two problems with that, first: most inhabitable planets are probably under the control of the various governments, so Sheridan cannot simply give them one of those, even if they are members of the Alliance. Second, even if there’s a suitable planet in uncontrolled territory, per the agreement Lochley made, they can’t leave. This thing is entirely on Byron. i can’t fault Sheridan’s reaction, because that’s pretty much how I would react if he’d pulled this stunt on me. If he had come to me and said, “Are there any planets that we might be able to colonize?” In Sheridan’s place I would have said, “Maybe, let me talk to the member worlds and see if they have anything.” But Byron didn’t do that, he went straight to coercion, and in that case my reaction would be, “You tried to blackmail me. You’re on your own now.” It also essentially backed Sheridan into a corner concerning the Alliance. At the end he says the member worlds have spoken unanimously, and now as president of the Alliance, he is bound to honor their wishes. I can criticize him for overruling Lochley in allowing them to stay on the station in the first place. I can criticize him for failing to account for how Psi Corps and EarthGov would react, and now taking measures. I cannot criticize him for his reactions to Byron’s ultimatum.

I like this Gaiman episode. Loved the Lochley/Zoe interaction the most, and the password - 3 words telling a story - Gaiman can be extremely economic with his words. At the 20th B5 Anniversary convention at Galveston we had Bridget Flanery (Zoe) as a guest, and she was quite surprised (touched) of the fan reaction and fondness for a character having just a few minuted in a whole series of 5 seasons. Be seeing you.

About Lennier coming back from Ranger training with darker edges... Marcus said Rangers told him he has a lot of repressed anger and he is not repressed anymore. Rangers make you face yourself, likt the trainee that had to face the fact he needs to help others even when he is not involved or the trainee that had to face the fact he was afraid of being beaten again in the terror episode. Lennier refuses to listen to Morden here and he is avoiding the feelings he has for Delenn which is why went to Rangers in the first place. Of course he seems darker now, he is hiding stuff, even from himself.

Ha, Jessie, almost nothing comes out of Teller/Zooty's mouth! 😁 I was delighted to see Penn and Teller guest star in B5. On a serious note: Yeah, this is the other episode that I mentioned previously that helped me appreciate Capt. Lockley more. To know how the death of Zoe affected her (and still does if her password is still "Zoe's Dead") and how much she had to pull her life back together from nearly the same fate as Zoe. That might also explain why a relationship with Sheridan didn't work since she was either wilder then or trying to recover and likely over-correct, and Sheridan was probably a little too "goody-two-shoes" for her at the time. I liked the concept of episode for sure. I can see some of the people that visiting our characters, but a few seemed odd. I agree that a one-night-stand for Dodger and Garibaldi was a little strange. I think Lennier got cheated. Mr. Morden would have made better sense to appear to Vir, Londo, Sheridan, or even G'Kar. Markus would have been better for Lennier. Keffer would have been fun, and I guess if he was still alive, he might have seen the other two GROPOS (that he was forced to room with). Heck, Londo could have head a line of people waiting to see him from Morden, to Lord Reefa, either of the previous two emperors, etc. The Kosh message might have been my favorite part of the entire episode. 🙂 I didn't even think about Anna visiting Sheridan... That could have been good.

    • @simongiles9749

It's always been my take that using "Zoe's dead" as her password is a daily reminder to Lochley not to backslide into addiction because of what the consequences were last time, as much as a memorial to Zoe.

Also, Penn & Teller represent the humor that you don't get but everyone else thinks is hilarious. Lockley is represents the viewer with that point of view as well. Everyone is watching Rebo & Zooty and laughing hysterically, and Lockly (us) just looks on thinking 'this isn't funny'. The swing between serial stories, one-off ones, etc. is also a by-product of the on-again/off-again nature of Season 5. There are storylines that would have been brought forward into Season 4 or maybe developed in other ways. You throw in the whole TNT network wanting to grow viewership or set up spin-offs, and Season 5 ended up being a little disjointed. Good, but uneven.

Exactly. It was about what the visitors wanted / needed to resolve. Lennier clearly hoped to meet Marcus, but Marcus had found his noble reason to die when he sacrificed himself for Susan. For Marcus, nothing was unresolved. As for why Morden came back, I am less certain. Was he continuing to play an agent of chaos, in a way? Or was there some altruistic desire to warn someone off of making a bad decision? Or was there some other motivation?

My word for today is a triple NO. As a gen Z.... what is Oregon trail? Are we responsible for what our ancestors did? No, but we have an increased responsibility to prevent it from happening again. Sometimes we unfortunately completely miss the point and do the wrong thing for the right reason... I love that sci-fi is so political yet allegorical. Having not even been born when B5 aired, I actually learned a lot about the 90s because of this show. Beyond the Rim: Crusade is actually set after the telepath war, with the PsiCorps no longer in existence as before. So I don't know whether they could have gone more into this in later seasons, unless the address the fallout or use flashbacks. Nonetheless, I wish they'd shown the telepath war somewhere. Hope you'll cover Crusade one day!

You know you guys, I have a lot of appreciation and respect for you. All of you. I probably have even more respect and appreciation for you for the things that we might not agree on. It's something that I'm grateful for. But of late, there's something that has begun to make me a bit uncomfortable. And maybe I can count on all of you to be thoughtful enough to actually consider it and run it through your brain. But I have come to feel todd the way, not the fact, but the way in which people try to shine a light on injustices to minorities in the past has become another invocation of white privilege. Privilege. Particularly white male privilege, because in a lot of professions, women have been in minority too. I don't know what the chance is. Are of you guys having any kind of discussion about relating to the show from that lens before it ends. But I would look forward to listening to it.

Spoilers below for stuff discussed "Beyond The Rim." The one thing about this show I have is a question of why many of the main characters never marry and have children. G'Kar (maybe, maybe not,) Ivanova, Franklin, Zack, Lochley just to name a few. More convenient or just JMS' dislike for marriage/mates? This came from the discussion on whether or not Franklin survives the show. Only Sheridan and Garibaldi have kids.

    • @Grey17Podcast

That's a great question. After reading JMS' book, I don't belive he hates marriage/mates. He just isn't good at it. (his opinion)

Sorry, still can't get behind Byron (no pun intended). 😁 Wow, the innuendo among the group for this episode might exceed the combined innuendo for all other episodes of the B5 series. The fifth grader in me could barely keep a straight face for half the podcast this week. BTW: My word of the day is "NO". Without the sex scene and Byron in general, the rest of this episode is pretty good. Byron still isn't wrong in what he feels is the problem, but his solution actually makes him more like Bester than he might like to admit. Bester is actually the more reasonable one now, in terms of he is still trying to work within the system humanity has going. Now, Byron is the more extreme of the two of them in terms of how he wants to solve the problem. Bester never asked for a planet. Ha, to one of Nicole's points: Are clowns Vorlons inside encounter suits? 🤣 That might explain why clowns are scary to so many people. To one of Justin's points: I have always considered Bester to be Magneto, as his stated mission the entire time is to further telepaths, not the rest of humanity. Much like Magneto wants to further mutants. Byron seems to keep to his own little group, and is only stepping out more now that he found out the Vorlon are responsible. To Jessie's comment, I have always thought of Byron as more of a Charles Manson figure... though maybe to a lesser extent. Byron may not be the one getting his hands dirty, but we can see the reaction of Byron's followers are not likely to remain non-violent. As Bester's underling, we don't know the true number of how many he killed before trying to be a pacifist. Lots of interesting questions raised. Humanity has been committing atrocities long before the USA was ever formed. History tends to repeat itself in cycles and the USA historical problems and those of today are just more of the same. Sure, the technology has advanced a lot (as have the weapons), and we should be smarter for it. But people are people, and tend to make the same mistakes even when they KNOW they are wrong... just like Londo did with the Narn. Londo knew it was wrong, but went on with it anyway, and nearly got both the Centauri and the Narn destroyed by it. I'll leave it there on this topic. The real question is can humanity learn form its mistakes and not repeat them (over and over again)? "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars" Season 4 finale would imply that answer could be "No". How do we know that the human species has not nearly destroyed itself many times over, and that something like the Catholic Church has not had to help us rebuild with the help of the Rangers?

So what if humans have been committing atrocities long before the USA was formed. Is that supposed to excuse what happened here 200 years ago, or 20 years ago, or now? What matters is not dismissing current concerns because "humans gonna human"---things that have happened that are CURRENTLY still affecting marginalized people are more relevant and should NOT be met with "well, everyone has always been shitty, what are you gonna do?" People in power are continuing TODAY to oppress based on seeds planted during the inception of the USA.
