Lyta is treated like "one of the good ones". And JMS and Tallman get across what its like for those "lucky few".

Regarding the gloves, they also said earlier (Talia) in the show that strong emotions can come through no matter what you try, but touch makes the reading a lot easier.

'Non-shitshow out of 10'? Perfect rating, that still puts it above this year's eurovision (sorry for any confused non-Europeans)
I am listening to this while doing homework and suddenly you start talking about biases while I am reading an article about cognitive bias. Did not expect that.
As for the formation of the alliance: I'm not a politics expert, but it feels a little like the UN: a post-war attempt to get people to work together. How well does it work? ... next question.

I think i may have said this before, but my feelings around the Byron plotline have changed a lot as I've got older and more politically aware (although i still find the character himself a bit annoying, just not half as bad as i used to think he was), and I get the feeling that while Scott remembers the general outline of that plot, i think he's fuzzy on some of the details (which would make sense if he hasn't watched season 5 in a long time). Very interested to see what his thoughts are as this season progresses.

There's an interesting examination of how refugees, asylum seekers, and marginalised groups are treated, and what happens if they get pushes so far that they fight back. But the execution isn't quite right.
To me it's a little like somebody can explain all of the technical reasons why jazz is a great musical genre, but it still fails to grab me at a visceral level.
That is to say, though, that there's more depth to the Byron storyline than I think is often credited.

@@simongiles9749I agree. I don't think the storyline is *great*, just a lot better than I used to. That's a really low bar 😂
I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10 now. When I first watched the show in the 90's (and I was 15-16 during season 5) I'd have given it a 2.

Scott is going to need to apologise to Robin Atkin Downes for calling him a soap opera actor because he has not and is not one! Shockingly he is the actor in this show with the most active and successful career since Babylon 5 and has played some pretty iconic characters.

I can't remember, was it mentioned in the podcasts for either "In The Beginning" or "No Compromises," that Robin Atkin Downes played Morann in ITB along with Byron in Season 5?

@@robertdendooven7258pretty sure it was mentioned Beyond the Rim on one of them at least.

@@lightsonno1home311 I was wondering in the main show with the New Ones if it was brought up. Whether or not they recognize an English accent.

I took it as meaning a “soap opera actor”, aka a over actor

"And so it begins...." And by that, I mean, Byron's BS. 😀
All the other plot points of this episode are fine... and I can agree that the Alliance facing it's first problem is essential. I like G'kar and Londo's back and forth, and certainly see him (G'Kar) as being more of a spiritual leader... even though he doesn't see himself that way. I like Lyta's role in this, and understand her troubles based on all she has seen and been through... but Byron still annoys me.
He makes me feel more likely to agree with Bester, and Bester's agenda. Makes me sympathize with Psi-Corp when Byron is one the screen. Granted, Byron isn't technically wrong, but he certainly goes about it the wrong way. He is the Keffer of Season 5, only Keffer wasn't as annoying as Byron. If Byron were to be strafed by a shadow ship, I don't think I would feel any sorrow for him... unlike Keffer, who I felt sorry for.
On the positive side, Byron always made me like Captain Lockley more. 😁 I'd agree, the actor for Byron is fine, and much like Walter playing Bester, he must be doing a great job if he can make us hate him. Also, Dr. Franklin (Richard Biggs) actually was a soap opera actor, and we have heard similar reactions to the Dr. Franklin's character from many on the podcast. 🙃
SPOILERS (Sort of): Lyta was already super-powerful in Thirdspace. You see aspects of it during the "discussion" 😉 she and Byron have in a few episodes and exactly where and why telepaths are created, and she really can't get much more powerful.

There world is flat! I can buy anything in London and sell it in Rio, while the buyer is in Cairo, and neither of us speak the same language. So, how is the world not flat? Earth maybe an oblate spheroid, but the World is flat! Yay Military Industrial Complex 😏
