Estonian Mythological Creatures are... Underwhelming.
Some crowd work from a gig in Talinn, Estonia in 2021. I love hearing about different countries mythology stuff. I just wasn't expecting this one to be a frog.

It's not "lohikäärme" originally. It's "louhikäärme" and "louhikäärme" translates to "rock dragon" in English. In Finnish folklore and mythology, a "louhikäärme" is typically portrayed as a creature that resides in rocky, mountainous regions, possibly guarding treasures or ancient secrets. The term combines "louhi," which can refer to rock or stone, and "käärme," meaning snake or dragon. This gives a sense of a dragon-like creature with affinities to the earth and stone, differentiating it from other types of mythical dragons that might be associated with elements like fire or water. The concept taps into the rich vein of Nordic and Finnish mythology, where creatures and spirits often embody natural elements and landscapes. "Lohikäärme" emerged later as a bit of a mistranslation or misunderstanding.

Ray, you are spot on with your critique there. It is not even funny anymore how much the finnish street language is departed from what schoolbooks teach. Many foreigners coming to finland, have proudly with sweat and tears learned finnish from books perhaps university classrooms before they enter the country. And then already on the (Air-)port they discover they understand shit all what is spoken around them. And as soon they open their mouth, ___everyone___ and their dog know thats either an immigrant, or a tourist 🙂 Not only because of the obvious accent that you will never be able to get rid off your entire life (forget the plan about blending in so well that people take you for a native, its not gonna work) - they will also detect you because you are the only one around speaking "school book finnish" At that point, some turn away from you - some turn towards you (also methaphorically) - but you will not get the native2native treatment. Is that a good thing? i let you decide.

That’s an amazing point! The Finns think someone who wasn’t born here (and isn’t white) doesn’t belong here, but actually immigrants have to take a test which (in any country) the nationalists would fail just like how how the religious know less about their own holy books than the atheists do.

Ärrän kierrän orren ympäri ässän pistän taskuun I tie the letter R around a old pole(?) and place the ace in my poket. Why do Finnish people teach this to you? Because it is the most essential thing to PRONOUNCE correctly to make yourself to sound like Finnish 👍 The second and as important point is to undersatnd that you can learn Literal Finnish which is not spoken Finnish and both can be written unlike in English. Hello, I'm WizardXeze and I live in finalnd Literal Finnish: Hei, minä olen WizardXeze ja asun Suomessa. Spoken Finnish Tere .... mie oo WizardXeze Suomesta. Tough I wrote Suomesta which is From Finland but they practically are the same thing. Perkele, Vittu, Saatana, Helvetti and Jumalauta are all curse words which Finnish people like to teach while they offer Salmiakki 👍 I blame YOU for not asking Finnish people to teach Finnish in wrong way. Do not ask "could you teach me Finnish?" Ask "Hey, how do I say in Finnish ________ ?" it is YOUR fault if you give us the freedom to choose what we teach and if YOU want to learn something that might help ASK THE THING! Need to call help? 112: "Hei! 112! Nyt on hätä! Se makaa maassa tajuttomana! Voisiko saada apua! Ja mielellää vielä englanniksi!" "Hello! 911! Theres been accident! She is lying on the floor unconsious! Could I get some help! And in English if possible pleace!" OH WAIT you call 112 and say "I NEED HELP!" and the Finnish operator flips to English "Don't worry" in the most heavy Rallig English possible 👍 90% of Finnish people understand English and 75% can talk English. It just is we never use it so it takes a moment to REBOOT because Finnish is not similar to English at all unlike Swedish 😂 So give them time. They will probably talk slowly. It is because they have to remake the sentences while translating them in their head. "Toki voin olla avuks" literal Finnish "Tietenkin minä voin auttaa sinua" literal translation: "Of course I can help you" translation: "Yes, how can I help you?" Not only do we have to first brake our sentence but after translating it we have to again alter it to become spoken english 😂 not many think about these things but that is my theory why Finnish people avoid speaking English even if they can. Not only do they like their own personal space but also they don't have opportunities to talk in English. You can try Small Talk with Finnish in Bus but you have to be careful and ask more general questions and carry the whole conversation 😁 I have had few times someone talk English but I'm bad with small talk and don't have the skill to end sentences in to leading questions to keep up the small talk 👍
