    A truly inspirational man who had commitment and determination (and money to help). It begs the question whether those now well-known artists would have been so well know today if it were not for John Hammond to recognise and then promote their music. However, it's sad that he despised bebop, probably because it was not considered "commercial" enough to merit attention.

    well, well... i feel the VC in general has pit more competive pressure on ppl to buy more than they need or want or can afford. this being said, me existing at the outer fringes of that has never been affected by that but coming from a dj angle i've put a lot of money into vinyl over the past decades, especially throughout the years i've been playing out a lot. we might be talking high five digits in terms of actual cash. these days, as dj'ing has slowed down significantly, i've set a basic rule of not spending more than 20% of me freelance income on vinyl - even though both my dayjob and freelance work is music related, running several small labels is as well, so vinyl is tax deductable for me as well and can be seen as a business expense and still doing radio shows does require additions to the collection anyway. this being said, oftentimes i only by a handfull of super recent releases, counting both new stuff as well as contemporary re-issues of electronic music from the 80s and 90s, my formative years, to backward complete my collection which seems to be vital to me. apart from this, i'll fill some gaps here and there within the named field and i'm totally fine with this at this point. if i happen to manage to get the dj thing going again at some point spending on vinyl will increase for sure. but for now i'd rather put some money aside to release limited whitelabel vinyl runs by artists and producers i really appreciate and want their music to be heard - and ofc to be sold globally through our distribution partner.

    • @AsTheTableTurns
      @AsTheTableTurns 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, it would be a cool side-gig for me to DJ. Had my first little DJ thing last week. It was fun! I could blame the UA-cam/IG vinyl community, but I’m the adult that needs to regulate his judgement and spending. Nobody else’s fault but my own weakness.

    • @bazedjunkiii_tv
      @bazedjunkiii_tv 2 місяці тому

      @@AsTheTableTurns that's for yourself to judge. there's worse addictions. and it's a long and hard way to go from a side-gig to tax deductability and making 'the music industry' your full time income. which i wouldn't have pursued if i had had children to feed. it's a struggle and - from a label perspective - producing records costs a shitload of cash as well.

      @@AsTheTableTurnsI think about this every now and then and it's sad. If I was to size down my collection to, let's say 500 jazz titles that really do it for me, my collection would give me a lot more joy. Right now there's too much and I kind of have my own museum. Slowly trying to trim but it's not easy.
